MSI 7125 board and Esata drive hot swapping

Hello. New member with a MSI-7125 board. I have the OEM board that Geeks had. Pretty much the same as the regular 7125. I want to use an external eSATA drive and attach it using a simple eSATA bracket that just connects to the board's internal sata ports, or I will use a PCI controller card. I'm told that either will work, and that I can have hot swapping on either too.  I want to be able to turn on and off the drive without turning off windows. I don't want to use the external drive as my main drive. Can anyone confirm that either interface method will work? I'm supposing the simple bracket might be faster since it will have no PCI bus to go through. Thanks

I've listed below a couple of sites that you may be intrested in. They offer the option of using eSATA or SATA on the rear plates. Don't confuse them as they use different plugs on the cables.

Repair of MacBookPro with OSX7 replaced logic board and hard drive.  CS3 notified that licensing has stopped working.  It worked before the repair -- and I believe that I had a similar problem in the past.  The Live Chat said that they were not compatible -- which doesn't make sense since it worked fine before the repair.  How can I get it going again.  Chat room said I had to buy new product which seems crazy.

  • Compatibility between MSI i7 boards and Corsair DDR3 RAM kits?

Similar issues from other posters: Thread 1, Thread 2
Are there any known compatibility issues between MSI's Intel i7 boards and Corsair's 1600 DDR3 triple-channel kits?
My brother's machine (which has been discussed here before last time I tried to fix it) is still having trouble, and also uses the same type of RAM as the two threads above. The symptoms are:
    1) Occasional lockups, followed by a reboot
    2) Inability to POST: the machine will try numerous times, rebooting each time (as in threads 1 and 2), followed (eventually) by the POST saying "the previous overclocking has failed and the BIOS is reset to default settings" - as in thread 1. The machine will then (normally) boot. Reducing the RAM speed increases the chance of a successful boot, but the settings don't stick (presumably they are wiped when the BIOS is reset to the default settings). Cold boots (after the machine has been switched off overnight) tend to be the most likely to fail.
Any ideas what could be causing this, if not an incompatibility with the RAM (in 3-channel mode)? Dropping down to one stick stabilises the system, but at the expense of dropping to a mere 2GB of RAM.

Out of seven MSI X58 boards, none had a problem with Corsair sticks. With the 1600's running at 1066, they should only require default (1.50v) auto voltage. They should also work using settings of 1N 9 9 9 24 without issue. As the CPU IMC only natively supports 800/1066, your particular CPU may have a limitation of working any higher. But, something is not right within the system if it will not run the RAM at 1066. To rule out a bad stick, test with just one in the black A0 slot, & swap it out & test the other two individually. As far as DRAM voltage, if all the sticks check out ok, try raising it to 1.55V. Keep the forum updated on your progress.
Added: Make sure 'Spread Spectrum' is disabled in bios Cell Menu, as well as 'Extreme Memory Profile' if your bios has it listed.
Are they 2GB sticks? (All the threads in question use the 2GB sticks - one 3×, and one 6×)
Back around the time I tried the BIOS flash as the solution, I Memtest86'd each of the sticks individually in the MSI-recommended slot for a single-stick configuration, and each tested perfectly. Part of the advice given at the time was to disable XMP and Spread Spectrum; they already were.
Whilst I can't be certain that the RAM is the problem, at least three threads on this board now are using 2GB Corsair 1600 sticks and having strikingly similar symptoms...
I'll try investigating the voltages later today. Thanks!

  • HT5219 thunderbolt, matrox, and esata drive conflicts

Hi I have a new 2012 imac 27" with two thunderbolt ports, I am using this for video editing, I also purchased the following devices:
    1. matrox mini max .h264 I/O accelerator
    2. laCie dual raid enclosure
    3. sonnet echo pro to esata converter using the sonnet 6gb/s tempo express 34 card
all items are thunderbolt, I am on the latest 1.21 thunderbolt firmware, the latest matrox 3.11 firmware, the sonnet and lacie do not use any firmware.
Yesterday, I spent all day doing a complete wipe and reinstall of 10.7.4, I only installed Adobe Premiere Pro 6.01, with the associated apps. - encoder, bridge,
and prelude. I checked every library, system folder, extension, and preference and made sure nothing was in the system. System is 3.4ghz i7 imac 32gb of ram 1tb internal, 6790 graphics card with 2gb of vram.
I then loaded the latest matrox driver and restarted..
The issue at hand; I have recently in the last 7 days purchased all the items listed above to replace on of my two 2012 macbook pro 17" 2.4ghz laptops.
Using the matrox with one firewire drive was no problem, adding the echo pro with esata caused the matrox to crash, upon a restart of the computer with the two items installed via thunderbolt, premiere pro would crash on start up I could not start premiere pro without disconnecting the thunderbolt.
I also tested the same matrox with the lacie and tried using the dual port of the lacie thunderbolt to run the matrox, all tests resulted in either premiere pro crashing or the matrox not working. I even encountered an odd situation where the matrox would not power up. (I bought two matrox units) I was able to replicated the non powering up on both and thought both were damaged.
I did various tests over a two day period, using matrox and sonnet tech support, the only possible issue could have been my adobe creative suite version 5 and 6 being installed which is why I did the complete clean install.
I am 99% certain the issue is either the imac only has one bridge board and is split for looks, or the thunderbolt software has a major conflict with matrox's firmware. I was able to locate a certain bug with their software and the facetime camera which is now posted on their website..
I need an apple tech to tell me with certainty.
1 does the imac has two separate thunderbolt ports.
2 if each port allows 2 devices would that include items like the lacie having it's own 2 port setup.
3 would there be any chance the thunderbolt cables themselves need any kind of software updates
    4. is there anything I can do to resolve this
    Thanks David

I don't have a Thunderbolt machine but according to this article, Windows doesn't support Thunderbolt at all. That means Apple had to add Thunderbolt support in order for it to work even as it does. How would a Dell have solved your problem?

  • Internal drives hot swap-able??

I have 4 drives in my G4 MDD and I only need 2 on all the time and the other are back ups that I usually only use once a week.
I usually leave them unplugged until I need them, then with the G4 off plug them in and start up
My Question is: can I plug them in while the computer is running? are they hot swap-able like a firewire drive or is it safer to shut down plug them in and restart
    Thanks

Hello! No you should not try re-connecting them while powered up. You're really asking for trouble by leaving them off and you're not saving any electricity to amount to anything. The strat/stop cycle of a hard drive is the hardest thing on a drive and takes many times the electricity than running them for many hours. Leaving them on all the time also keeps them at more of a constant temperature. I've seen drives that were working find day in and day out and when stored for a few weeks sometimes won't boot at all. I run everything 24/7/365 and have for over 10 years with no significant problems. Sure a hard drive will fail from time to time but I'm running some many yeras old. Hope this answers your question. Tom

  • Question about MSI Z87 boards and NVMe PCI-E SSDs

With the release of the Intel SSD 750 PCI-E SSD and more NVMe SSDs no doubt to follow, will the older motherboards like the Z87 series get updates so that they can boot with NVMe SSDs?
All of the Z97 and X99 boards already have compatibility:
    http://www.msi.com/news/1949.html
What about older chipsets like Z87, Z77? Z87 in particular is very similar to Z97, so I'd imagine it'd be the most likely candidate.

    Yeah I did.

Did anyone get an answer from MSI.
MSI is there going to be a BIOS release to support the ability to boot off of nvme PCIe cards for the M87 boards?
MSI Tech.   05/14/2015   We unfortunately do not have any information regarding any future support for these series boards and supporting NVMe, you , you may continue to visit our news section for updates as they become available. http://us.msi.com/news/
I think is possible though - that and it's likely these boards may support Broadwell as well.

  • Logic Board and Hard drive

I have a 20" 1.25GHZ G4 iMac that had a hard drive failure. It could be seen by Disk Warrior, Drive Genius but wouldn't respond to repairs. After taking it out I was able to confirm that it's bad.
I installed a new drive but that can't be seen by install discs(original and 10.5) or DW and DG. I replaced the cable to the logic board and confirmed continuity on the power wire to the drive. (And the DVD drive runs so it has power). I tried jumper settings of "cable Select" and "master". I confirmed off line that the new drive is good. New board battery. Reset PMU.
Does it make any sense that the problem is the logic board? Everything else seems okay - display, DVD drive, etc. What confuses me about the logic board is that it worked enough to see the bad drive. Anything else to check/change?

Depending on the brand of replacement hard disk drive,
and the requirements with whichever one you have to
work in the iMac G4 configuration, the jumper pin setting
may be the issue. There could also be an issue with an
ATA controller on the logicboard; or other hardware...
Given the possibility of issues in this, some users have
opted to stay away from some brands of drives which
had presented a problem if used as replacement drives
in these computers. Some leave a lasting impression.
{One example, is WD drives. They may be fine, but I
    don't prefer to use them in Macs ... from SCSI days!}
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • MSI z68 board and Intel Smart Response

Hi, I look at the MSI board on NewEgg, and I don't see any specification as they work with  ISR. I'm planing to get a GD-65 or 80 and I want to use a 64 gb SSD with a mecanical drive with this new ISR.

It appears Z68 boards are capable of this technology. The big introduction & push by Intel is supposed to be in conjunction with the budget Larsen Creek SSD's release. The websites like techpowerup & others are loaded with information about ISR. All indications show ISR will definately be provided with Z68 & Panther Point. Would imagine the Intel website has some details since it is their brainchild.

  • MSI GT780 Fn and left Ctrl are swapped.

My Fn key and my left Ctrl key, swapped for no apparent reason. I would like to know if there is a way to fix this. I've tried multiple things, involving programs which let the user remap his keyboard. I am thinking this is a bios related problem. Have you got any clue on how I can fix this?

  • MSI Z77A-G43 and mixed drive types

    Hi,
I have an own-built desktop using a MSI Z77A-G43 motherboard. The OS boots from an SSD but all documents, media, etc, are stored on 2x1TB HDDs, configured as RAID.
However, having performed a benchmark on my SSD I'm finding that it's speed is half what it should be. It's connected to the SATA 3 connector on the MB.
I'm wondering if the issue is that, because of the RAID drives, I have the SATA mode as RAID in the BIOS. Is it falling back to IDE for non-RAID drives? Is there a way to force it to use AHCI?
Any thoughts/help on this would be greatly appreciated.
    David.

Well, checking you manual will clear up your confusion. SATA 3 is the connector number while SATA III is a terminology for SATA 6GB/s. Some say just SATA 3 meaning SATA III but that's just wrong terminology. The SATA 3 connector and all others but SATA 1 & 2 are 3GB/s (1-22 of the manual by the way)

  • MSI P965 board and 4 gig memory....

Does the hardware on the P965 Platinum board support 4 gig memory? MSI says "up to 8GB memory size (with DDR2 800, memory only up to 4GB)" and it sounds good, but did anyone actually tried four gig or more with this board?
It's not related, but my T60p laptop shows only three gig when four gig is installed; I just don't want to buy memory for nothing twice in one month...

I am not saying that I fully understand the whole adress space thing.  I just tried to share what I have understood from reading about the whole 4gb matter so far.
Here is another example of what I tried to point to in trying to offer an explanation on the basis of the assumption that this is not really some sort of bug:
    http://members.cox.net/slatteryt/RAM.html
Thanks for the link and most certainly I don't fully understand the "whole address space thing" either. I still say that my tech (I need to ask him tomorrow) did call Lenovo and they did say that the current hardware does not support more than 3.2 GBs of memory. Here's another link from UK that discusses this issue. Quote from the link:
"So if you chose your motherboard wisely/flukily, all 4GB will be available to you. However, if you're unlucky you'll find your memory map looks like this:
    Address         Contents
    0x00000000 - 0x3fffffff   Memory
    0x40000000 - 0x7fffffff   More memory
    0x80000000 - 0xbfffffff   Even more memory
    0xc0000000 - 0xffffffff    Memory-mapped devices
0x100000000-0x3ffffffff   Where the *?#! did my last GB go?
Notice that only 3GB of the 4GB that you purchased made it into the memory map. So that last 1GB is unavailable to you. And don't think you can dust off that old copy of QEMM - this isn't memory which is hiding somewhere, and which you can coerce the OS into using, like in the good old days. Well...the old days. No, this memory is quite simply invisible to the CPU. If your motherboard is in this category, there is no physical way the CPU can get access to that memory. (In fact you'd probably find that the top 4 address bits of the processor aren't actually connected up to anything!)
What's particularly galling is that certain motherboards are advertised as accepting up to 4GB of memory, and yet won't let you use the last 1GB! ("Oh, you were expecting to use all 4GB. Sorry, we only guarantee that the motherboard will work when you put 4GB in.")"
I still blame the OEMs for this and not the software....

  • I  put back the logic board and optical drive and it wont start up i have a metal  piece left over smaller tha an inch

no power up could this metal band be for the power button or does it assumes the screeen is closed

Your question is like me saying, I put my car engine together and I have a part left over. Now the car won't start. Do you think the left over part has something to do with it not starting?
Of course it does and as well you may also have assembled the parts incorrectly, or maybe you broke something when putting it together, maybe static electricity zapped a component. Just as you don't know why my car won't start after I put it together, we don't know why your computer won't start.

  • Problem using eSATA drive with my G5

I recently bought an eSATA card for my G5, hoping that it would speed up my backups and other transfers of large quantities of data. The card is a FirmTek SeriTek/1VE4 PCI-X. The drive I am using is a Seagate Freeagent Pro 750gb.
The drive works perfectly when used with either the USB or Firewire connections. But when I tried to hook up via the eSATA cable I got this message - "SeriTek/1VE4 in slot 2: configuration changed. Finalize all changes (connecting/removing devices) before closing this window". I then have the option of clicking on "Done - Show More Details" or "Done". Clicking on either simply causes the message to reappear.
Unfortunately I have no idea what this means, and what I need to do. The drive is not showing on my screen when hooked up via eSATA; all that happens is the message above appearing on the screen. I have to disconnect the drive to get the message to go away.
While I suspect (and hope!) this problem has an easy resolution I have no clue what to do at this point. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

You checked first that the card is okay with those consumer style dual/quad interface cases?
    Sonnet cards specifically warn against.
Your best bet is always to avoid vendor name brand drive cases for external drives.
Go get yourself a plain simple dual SATA only case that doesn't have USB/eSATA (or USB/FW/eSATA).

  • How To add a second eSata drive once first drive capacity is reached

What upgrade options are available once an eSata drive recording capacity is reached?
Once an eSata drive connected to CHS 435HDC DVR reaches recording capacity, is there a way for a second external eSata drives to be connected and used as external storage devices without loss of all data on the first eSata drive?
Currently once a second drive is connected and activated on the DVR, all playback access to ALL the data stored on the first eSata drive is lost and cannot be played back once the second drive is ejected from the DVR and the first reinstalled..
Once the first drive is reinstalled the Check Capacity option for the first drive which once showed the drive as full and at maximum capacity before it was ejected and uninstalled, now shows 0% full, and 0 hours usage hours and the drive space 100% available.
These reading are without having reformatted the drive and only selecting the "accept" option once the DVR detected the drive being reinstalled.
The Recording option still will show recorded program listing, but once a recording is selected for playback, no recorded program data appears on the screen nor none of the normal indicators displayed on screen during normal playback does not appear.
This means there is no upgrade path or option available once recording capacity is reached for an eSata extended storage drive, other than losing all 350 hours of recorded program data or deletion of files to free up capacity.
Also there is no warning that once a drive is disconnected from the DVD and another drive is activated all data recorded on the first drive is lost and cannot be played back! The data must be there nut not recognizable by the DVD program even though the data was created on the same DVR and eSata drive.
How can I safely connect a second eSata drive to the DVD and not lose all the recorded data on the first eSata drive?
Thanking you in advance for your help.

  • Need help! White screen and hard drive

I have a MacBook Pro A1211 I got off Craigslist. It needed a new logic board and hard drive so I got both. My problem is I just found out the hard drive has windows on it and when I power on the MBP all I get is a white screen.  My question is is there a way to get windows off that hard drive while its installed in the MBP? I've tried every command I could find online to push when I power on the MacBook but it does nothing. I bought a copy of snow leopard 10.6 factory sealed and put it in the super drive but it just spins for a while and then stops. The fans constantly run also but I'm new to MacBook so I don't know if that's suppose to happen. I got the disk management to come up one by holding down option and power on but it didn't give me the option of choosing the SuperDrive and I can't get it back up. It's almost like the keyboard isn't working. If there's any suggestions y'all can give me I'd appreciate it.
