Msi 7246 (Platinum Power up edition) & Core 2 Duo E7400 compatibility

Hi
Does anyone know If the Core 2 duo E7400 is compatible with the msi-7246 board, I have check the processor compatibility tables on the MSI website plus (cpu-upgrade.com/mb-MSI/975X_Platinum_(MS-7246).htm) and this processor is not listed. For some reason every other processor is listed even the ones that are not compatible except this one, the chart goes from the E7300 to the E8190.
Also if the processor is compatible which bios would be required.
Cheers

Which source do you use to check CPU support ?
The official MSI support site only lists Pentium D and 4 processors being supported. http://www.msi.com/product/mb/975X-Platinum.html#/?div=CPUSupport
EDIT: My apologies, here is the Power up edition support page: http://www.msi.com/product/mb/975X-Platinum-PowerUp-Edition.html#/?div=CPUSupport
That CPU is also not on the support list.

  • MSI 975X PLATINUM POWER UP EDITION

    today is january 23rd, 2010
i just bought the msi 975x platinum power up edition in new york, from a store that was going out of business, but i am having problems because this does not power on.
i am using brand new and tested functioning: thermaltake tr2 430w psu, intel core 2 duo 2.66GHz fsb 1066, and also tried a celeron d 2.66GHz fsb 533, 1x corsair 1gb stick 800 mhz, nvidia 7 series pci express vga card, connected to a test ctr monitor AOC 5en.
i connected the 24 pin atx main connector, the 8 pin connector that powers on the cpu and also the peripheral connector that powers the pci express, and all i got was the heatsink fan spinning, but nothing appears on my screen (all is black).
i hope somebody can help me, because now the store where i bought it has closed, and i dont know how to get a warranty from MSI since i dont understand their RMA policy.

if it is not sure that after updating bios the motherboard can use some more new cpu`s, then i think it would be a waste of time trying to do a bios upgrade.
I am not sure that I understood what you mean, but it is nothing unusual that an older board/chipset will not support the latest processor models.  And this has nothing to do with the board manufacturer.
    Quote
I only wanted to do that bios upgrade thinking it would be enough to avoid the karma of searching for those listed cpus
What is so hard about digging up a supported processor?  I mean, all you have to do is to decide which model you want to get (an E6600 would be a great choice for this board) and then buy it. You will probably be able to get a great deal on a used one on E-Bay.
This is not a complicated situation.

this is my first msi mobo!!!
... and it has nothing to do with this being an MSI Mainboard.  The only problem is that it is an old mainboard/Chipset and that the latest 45nm processors are too different regarding their specifications to be properly supported.

where can i get a copy of the driver cd utility of this mobo?
i would like to get a copy from the original cd
There was no driver cd included in the mainboard box which you can make a copy off?
You can find all drivers for download on the product site for this mainboard:

  • 975X Power Up Edition & Core 2 Duo E6600

    Greetings,
I just got a new Intel Core 2 Duo for my MSI 975X Power Up edition =-) The reason I'm posting is i'm trying to Overclock my CPU. When i go into my bios and enter The Cell Menu, I go to the FSB Speed and up it to what I want. When I go to select save and Exit, the computer completely shuts off, like the power is cut from it. Then after about 3 seconds it starts up, and runs fine. The settings are saved and everything appears to runs stable.
My concern is, is it normal behavior for the computer to completely shut off when i save and exit the bios after changing the fsb speed on the CPU? To me it seems odd and I'm concerned if there is something wrong =-/ Any suggestions or experiences would be appreciated.

It all depends on the motherboard.  When a motherboard cold boots it does more self-checks.  How-Stuf-Works  It so happens that the 975x forces a cold-boot when certain settigns are changed.

  • 975X Platinum Power-Up Edition audio woes

    Greetings assorted bipeds.
    I have:
    MSI 975X Platinum Power-Up Edition
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
    2xOCZ 800MHz RAM
    ATI Radeon X1950 Pro
    Etc
My audio however is always spotty. It tends to have pops in it, as if someone were making popcorn right next to me all the time... I've tried plugging into the back audio ports (integrated into the mobo) as well as the front ones. I've also tried using my headset, so it's not the speakers. I've tried downloading the newest drivers for the audio, and tried different audio codecs, to no effect.
So I'm perplexed. Short of replacing the motherboard, I don't know what else I can swap out to see what the problem is... Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm already on the Intel controller.
I flashed my BIOS but afterwards it didn't detect my RAID 0, which isn't good thing, as I like my Windows partition and what's on it... I re-flashed it back to the old one, and now the RAID is detected. Is this common, or did I do something wrong? I'd rather not have to repartition and reinstall XP...

  • 975x Platinum Power Up Edition Help Required

    Good Afternoon,
Have just purchased the following setup
Motherboard: MSI 975x Platinum Power Up Edition
    Processor: Intel E6600
Ram: Cruicial Ballistix 2 x 1GB PC6400 Dual Channel (MSI Say It Is Supported)
    GFX: MSI GeForce 7950GT 512MB PCI E
HDD: 2 x 80gb Seagate (Connected Via Sata)
    CDROM: Sony DVD-RW
PSU: Hiper Modular 530W Black SLI Certified PSU
Think thats all you need, its been built by an experienced pc builder.
It will not start, when we switch it on it boots for about 5 seconds then shuts down and restarts, the error reporting leds are in the following combination:
    Red Green
    Red Red
Originally we were running Geil Ram, but realised MSI didn't support this so got some Crucial however it still doesn't work, I have read a number of threads on this forum and tried resetting the CMOS and playing around with the memory configs, any help and advice on how to get this working would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

    @deastwood:
Can we call you Clint for short?
Sympathies - We have a similar setup.  I returned my first Corsair twins as the board would not boot with them as a twin.  Turns out one was supposedly defective.  BUT - when I recently replaced my Corsair twin 800s that did not work eventually with twin 1Gb CL4 800 Crucial Ballistix stix - I had a severe reboot issue and frequently - the system would not start without hitting the reset or the cold boot start button on the powerup many times.  When it did not start I had the same LED settings you noted.
My colleagues who run a "confuser" shop, took out the Crucial memory, tried it in another 975 board (I think the ASUS 5B delux). and the Asus board booted just fine with the memory.  They left the momory at 1.8VDIMM - stock - even though Crucial recommends 2.2 for these stix.
They removed the 975XPUE battery, reset the CMOS, and plugged the battery back in - VOILA - everything worked and today I am running as below.  We have no idea why it would work after a CMOS reset as I had tried that before (but perhaps I had not left it long enough or did not press the reset button on the CMOS in the right sequence - something real simple like that????? ).
BOTTOM LINE:  since they did that - it has no reboot issue - and all I did with the memory is set it manually to 5-4-4-12.  It is like a ROCK now.
Others are more qualified than I about this board - but suggest you might go back to basics:
    1) check the memory works in another board
    2) remove battery, wait 10 minutes, press CMOS reset button for 10 seconds, replace battery
    3) check yourself all the power/CPU fan connections and that you have the 4-pin molex connected to the GRAKA
(do you have a 20 or 24 pin power bar ?)
    4) reseat the memory (just use one stick in either of the green mem slots)
    5) do not bother connecting the IDE/CDROM until you get to post.
    6) Just use one SATA drive (connected to SATA 1 (top))
    7) Put in a less powerful GRAKA (a radeon 600 or NVIDIA equivalent) and run it with a VGA connector.
    8) Read the MOAN guide just in case you all forgot something real simple.  It does not take that long to ge through it.
It took me quite a few fiddles and frustrations to get my 6600 rig solid - sorry to hear about yours not even kick starting.
But just be a bit patient and take it from the start with as few extra bits of kit til u get past post to the Bios.
Happy rails.. and let us know how trhings are progressing...   keith

Hello guys! I need new memory for my MSI 975x platinum power up edition motherboard, i have 2gb ddrII corsair on 533 from before, but i want to upgrade to faster and now 4gb. Wich can you guys recommend that would be stable and work great on this motherboard?. And also can i put a  INTEL E8400 CORE2D 3.0GHZ 1333/6M S775 processor on my MSI 975x PU platunim edition and it will run good?? Thnx.

4 GB of memory should be no problem.  The best thing would be to go for 2 x 2GB modules.  Do not buy anything faster than DDR2-800 and make sure the memory you buy is able to operate @DDR2-800 @1.8V.  DDR2-800 modules will be recognized as DDR2-667 because of chipset limitations, however, you can manuall increase the frequency to DDR2-800.  Avoid OCZ Modules as there have been numerous compatibility problems.

45n processors and FSB-1333-CPUs are not supported on this mainboard.  Check the CPU Support list here for upgrade options:

  • 975X Platinum Power Up Edition v 2.1 - Will not Boot!

    Hi All,
I have what seems to me to be a major issue. I've just built a new machine with the following specs :
    PSU : Coolermaster eXtreme Power 650W PSU - ATX 12V V2.01 120mm Fan 20+4pin
    MBO : 975X Platinum Power Up Edition v 2.1
    CPU : Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2.4GHz 1066MHz) Socket 775 L2 8MB Cache
MEM: OCZ 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 CL 5-5-5-12 GOLD XTC *SPECIAL OPS* ED
    GFX : Sapphire X1950GT 256MB
DVD: Samsung SH-S203B 20X DVD±RW/RAM / DL Serial ATA Black Bare Drive
    HDD: Hitachi Deskstar T7k500 HDT725032VLA360 320GB SATAII (2)
When I boot, the D-Bracket briefly shows green lights at position 1 and 4 and then just hangs on one green light in position 4. I see no display on the monitor. All the fans are spinning but nothing else happens!
I got the following response from MSI :
    Dear Sir,
Thank you for your concern. Please follow the below steps to have a try.
1.unplug the battery and clear cmos.
2.clean up all the components and plug them again.
    3.change another memory.
    4.change another power supply.
5.make sure whether the cpu fan is fixed properly and tightened.
If still can't help, please mail us again.
    Regards
    MSI Technical Support Team
I have tried everything they said, but it has made no difference. The strange thing is that no red leds come on. I thought that the first in the display sequence of the d-bracket was four red leds.
Any ideas? I really need your help!
    Many Thanks,
    Matt

Did you connect the 8-pin +12V-CPU-connector to your power supply?
    Quote
    GFX : Sapphire X1950GT 256MB
Make sure the 6-pin PCIe connector on your graphics card is hooked up to your PSU. Also use the 4-pin (4x1) PCIe connector on your mainboard to re-assure stable power supply.
Take the board out of your case and put it on a non-conducting surface for testing.  Use barebone configuration only:
    - CPU
    - one RAM module in Slot 1
    - graphics card
    - D-Bracket
    - disconnect hard drives, optical drives, USB devices, add-on cards and USB front panel connectors.
    - Clear CMOS (remove main power plug removed from PSU first)
Then try to boot your system again and see if there are any changes. If not, use the other RAM module and try again.
    One more thing:
Make sure that you are really using the Power-Up Edition of the 975X Platinum mainboard.  The regular edition (MS-7246 v1.x) does not support your CPU.  There was a case not too long ago in which a user bought a 975X Plat. PUE mainboard (MS-7246 v2.x) that did not want to work as expected.  It turned out that he actually got the older edition of the board.

  • 975X Platinum Power Up Edition to buy or not.

HI everyone,I have been looking at the 975X Platinum Power Up Edition but i see a lot of bios problems posted here.so i guess i will go with another board .i don't want to go with another board with bios problems unless they can be fixed in due time.so is it a good board or not?

    UAW,
I agree with your observation that these Forums provide a level of support for the purchase of MSI products, especially motherboards.  I've clung to MSI motherboards through seven PC builds . . . all seven have been with MSI motherboards.  Number eight is underway with the third of three 975X PUEs bought at the same time.  Without these Forums I might never have solved some of my PC build problems.
In a nutshell, and in my experience, the 975X has issues.  Worse, neither it nor the supporting MSI Utilities are up to even the previous MSI standards, not that they were all that great to begin with.  Worse still, I see little evidence that MSI is actively addressing many of these issues . . . while MSI Sales sits around and slaps each other on the back for the favorable Tom's Hardware review that the 975X received.
If these Forums don't give you enough of a "flavor" for the 975X, go to NewEgg and read some of the reviews there.  Admittedly, these MSI Forums are FOR people experiencing problems, but not NewEgg.  Those reviewers, for the most part, want to think the BEST of their purchase . . . they WANT to be pleased.  By a wide magrin they have not been pleased.
Me?  "Disgusted" pretty well sums up my feelings.  My next motherboard purchase will definitely NOT be MSI.  Sorry, I'm a candid poster, 62 years of age, and ready to admit that I don't always make the right decisions or purchase the best products.  Two come instantly to mind:  SyQuest "zip" drives & MSI motherboards.

  • 975X Platinum Power-Up Edition v2.1 boot sequence not detecting keyboard

I don't know if anyone else has experienced this problem before.  I've owned the 975X Platinum Power-up edition motherboard version 2.1 for just a little over three years.  I have installed Windows 7 on the system in December 2009.  On resuming from sleep mode tonight it locked up necessitating a reboot - on reboot the it detects the processor, memory and hard drives and then displays "keyboard error or not found" and stops waiting for a F1 or Delete key press.
I've tried the Logitech USB keyboard on another system, so it's not the keyboard.  The diagnostic bracket displays red on LED 1, green on 2/3, and 4 is not lit.  What does this mean?  Does anyone have any ideas on what to try?  The USB ports have power as I have other USB peripherals that have power, could it be that the keyboard controller has blown?
The motherboard has worked well for three years until tonight and I would rather not spend a lot of money repairing the board or buying new components for a new system.

do >>Clear CMOS Guide<< with power removed,
also disconnect and re-connect the keyboard

  • VTx on MSI P43-Neo3 FR (1.0) and Intel Core 2 Duo E7400

    Good day guys...
I was trying to develop (beginner) on Android and I was using this machine for it. Well, the Android SDK has the Intel HAXM bundled with it, it's for VTx-feature of Intel.
Now, I know Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 is on the list that has VTx, but when I run the Intel HAXM installer, it detects that it was not supported. After a few clicks on google, there is somewhat a setting on the BIOS that would enable the use of VTx...
And that's why I asked here, is there something in P43-Neo3 that makes VTx disable or was it not supported?
*BTW, using XP Pro SP3 on this machine...

I know Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 is on the list that has VTx
It kind of depends on the exact version:

Intel says: "See SPEC Details" which forces is to look here:
    http://ark.intel.com/products/36500/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-E7400-(3M-Cache-2_80-GHz-1066-MHz-FSB)#orderingretired
Three versions of the E7400 are mentioned:
    LGA775      65 W   BX80571E7400   SLB9Y   VTx: No
    LGA775      65 W   BX80571E7400   SLGQ8   VTx: No
    LGA775      65 W   BX80571E7400   SLGW3   VTx: Yes
We need to make sure, that you have the third version first.
What is your current BIOS Version, by the way?

  • MS 7246 - 975X Power Up Edition (Problems)

Hi! I am from Argentina and 7 months ago I been purchase a MS 7246 board. Since that time, I never could run my memories a 800MHZ and I never could make that my motherboard detect correctly my memories speed. I been really disappointed with msi and this motherboard, and sincerely I lost confidence in the support and manufacturing process; nevertheless, I will try posting my problem in this thread hoping that somebody could help me.
    Details about my hardware
    -   MSI 975x power up edition (BIOS 7.6)
    -   Intel core 2 6300
    -   2GB RAM DDR2 800MHZ Dual channel (OCZ2P8001G) 4-5-4-15
    -   Sapphire x850XT PCI-E
My mother detects my memories as 667Mhz. System do not boot If I set manually my memories at 800Mhz using this configurations:
    -   CPU Clock X7
    -   FSB/Speed (266*7 = 1862Mhz @ Default speed)
    -   FSB & Memory ratio = 1.5 (Using “auto” here system detect memories speed @ 667Mhz)
    -   Memories speed (266*1.5*2=798 Mhz)
    -   Memories voltage 2.1v/2.2v
    -   CPU Voltage 1.25v/1.3v
    -   Other parameters are as default.
    Things that I been tried
    -   I been tried setting by SPD or manually memories latencies at 4-5-4-15 but mother does not boot or simply hang.
    -   I been tried unsuccessfully increasing voltage to CPU or memories.
    -   I been tried unsuccessfully updating my bios but again nothing.
I been read in internet that a loot! of people have similar problems. Some people fix those problems updating bios, but other people could not found a solution. Somebody could help me?
    Thank you very much!
    Eduardo

I had a look at your screenshots.  The first thing I noticed is that you RAM modules have really strange SPD values:
Your stick's SPD values do not seem to comply with the JEDEC standard. Maybe this is an additional explanation to your problems causing BIOS and/or memory controller to be a little confused.
The second thing I noticed is the fact that the automatic frequency/multiplier and Core voltage adjustions done by the C1E feature is now working properly:
As you can see on the pictures I took from your screenshots, VCore and multiplier are now changing.  That means, that the feature is working properly.  If you close all background applications and running programs and leave only CPU-Z running, Core Voltage should drop to a certain minimum level and stay there with the multiplier set to x6.
The fact that C1E is working now, could explain the small drop in temperatures to about 48°-50°C @CPU cores.
    Quote
    Comments:
    - Maybe cpu sensor is broken or bad? (I touch cpu cooler and is not so hot)
    I really doubt that.
    Quote
    - The northbridge 975x definitely is hot. (But i suppose that your should have same situation here)
Yes, it has a tendency to get rather hot, especially if the system is overclocked.
    Quote
    - If I do not use my computer from 5 or 10 minutes temperatures decrease at 50ºc (core 0) and 48ºc (core 1), but not much more.
This is the kind of drop I expected with C1E working properly again.
    Quote
¿Do you see something strange in my temperatures
Your temperaturer are elevated and a little higher than average, but not really dangerous after all.  You should not worry yourself too much.  The shutdown temperature of your CPU is around 85°C.  So you still have some headroom.
However, if you find the time (and the money  ) you should at least consider optimizing your cooling solution, either by re-installing the heatsink and applying new and better thermal paste and by tweaking the airflow that goes through your case, or even better by installing a more efficient heatsink to your CPU.
    Quote
¿Do you see something strange in my temperatures and memories?
The issues you are experiencing with your memory are definately strange.  As I said before, I believe the reason is a rather simple incompatibility issue.  If this is caused by non-JEDEC SPD values or because your modules are of an older revision that use Elpida or Powerchip chips I don't know, but I am glad you were able to find a workaround.
    /UPDATE
I googled around a little bit to find more information on general issures with the particular kind of OCZ modules you are using (OCZ2P8001G).  What I found was the following thread in the OCZ forum:
    http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=112411
If you find the time read a little bit around in it.  The fact that this thread exists asking for user reports on success/problem stories with this memory, if a clear indication that it is not an issue that has to do with your particular mainboard alone. In case you find 10 spare minutes to read around in it, pay attention to what is said about the revision and the chips used on the sticks.  Here are a few quotes from the thread. There are of course other voices as well, pointing to the chipset or the board in use.  But there seem to be quite a few different boards by all brands involved.  However, I dare to say that overall picture doesn't look to well for the modules:
    Quote
Yea but if you RMA them you just get the same model back. I don't think it would solve anything  (Unless they are giving out Rev2s?)
    Quote
Well i've had nothing but problems with the 2 sets i've had. No one at OCZ informed me that i needed the rev2's to work how i want.
    Quote
I'm pretty sure that OCZ gets the same Elpida chips from Samsung that other DIMM makers get. The only things specific to OCZ would be the PCB, SPD programming and speed binning.
    Quote
That is what prompted Tony to suggest an RMA. That is how I know it is the ram having problems not the board.
    Quote
If the ram won't do specified speeds, no matter what divider used, then off course something is wrong, but getting 4 sticks that stops at the exact same speeds is close to impossible. Send either myself or Ryder an email and we will sort you out. I will make sure you get an advanced shipment sent out today if you want.
    Quote
All I really know about Rev. 1 ELP is that an OCZ rep told me it used the same Elpida chips as Gold but was higher binned. Rev. 2 uses different chips.
    Quote
I don't know but IIRC, I read someone here post that they are using Micron D9xxx. Given the higher cost of rev. 2, that seems plausible enough.
    Quote
If you are using Rev1, you are the first I've heard without problems.
    Quote
I think the problem is rather isolated to only a group of people with bad sticks.

My main problem is permanent losing of power from mainboard when I shutdown my PC.
I noticed that devices such as Scanner and CardReader turn off, everytime when I shutdown PC, instead of staying in Stand By.
I think that it is not OK and that MSI P965 Platinum mainboard doesn’t work properly?! Also, I can't power on the system with keyboard or mouse,
    even these options exist.
Thank you in advance for your consideration!

    elgasoni,
please allow me to tell you what I know about PC and this power management thingy
    1. no WOL (wake on LAN), no Wake on USB, no Wake on PS2
--> there should be no LED blink on your system while it is OFF, but your power supply still supplying 5V_stby to your board.
    2. with WOL, no Wake on USB/PS2
--> no LED blink on your keyboard/mouse too, but your LAN port may still blink if you hooked your LAN cable up to a powered router. Again, your PSU is only supplying 5V_stby to your board and the LAN is consuming it.
    3. with WOL, with Wake on USB/PS2
--> there may be LED on your keyboard/mouse, depending on your keyboard/mouse design. Your LAN port surely blink as condition stated in (2). Same thing, PSU only supplying 5V_stby.
    4. The "S3" suspend mode.
--> This mode has to be exit from Windows by selecting "standby" and your BIOS must enable it to suspend to S3. The LED will behave the same as in (3), in addition that your RAM is still powered, refreshed to keep its content. If you remove your RAM stick, your system will not be wake up anymore.
--> If you wake up the system, your system will take you directly less than a second to the Windows to the logon screen with your previous sessionis still active in the background.
    5. "S4" hibernate mode.
---> the LED behavior will be like (1), (2) or (3), depending on where you set your system to be.
---> When you wake up the system, it takes a few seconds (could be 10 seconds or more, depending on your RAM size) for your HDD to fetch in the previous RAM image back to your RAM.
So, which behavior you are having right now?
And now, the potential problem --. LED blink, but no wake up event support, LAN, mouse, keyboard all can't wake up the system, but they are still consuming power. Yup, this could be a HARDWARE problem, or could be solved by BIOS.
    Are you having this problem?

  • P975x Platinum Power Up edition and OCZ DDRII 800 problem

i recently upgraded my mobo from a P965Neo to a p975pue but it seems that this configuration wont work. According to D-Bracket it hangs at "Memory Detection Test" - (second LED green ). Ive tried with another set of DDRII-533 and everything works fine. Any clues ?
Id like to mention that memory was tested on other system too and its ok.
    Config:
    - Mobo: P975 Platinum Powerup Edititon
    - Proc: Core Duo E6600
    - Memory:DDRII  OCZ PC2  6400 Platinum Edition 2x512 ( 4-5-4-15)

    Hi Remark,
There seems to be others having trouble with your mem and this board. You may need to set bios settings with the 533mhz mem in, then shut down install the OCZ and boot then. Have a read of this post may point you in the right direction

  • Msi p45 platinum power up problems

Hey guys, i have got a fairly new system i think its about 2 months old
    e8400 e0
    msi p45 platinum bios 1.71beta
    4g kit 1066 kingston hyperx
    palit 1g 4870
    huntkey 650w psu
Okay so heres the deal, the computer was running at 3.6ghz, stable for the past 2 months.
I have tried 4ghz with almost every possible combination of volts, but it passed prime 95 for about 36 hours 1 day, and the next have a random reboot
I also noticed that my psu was making this weird whining noise so i just ordered and installed a pc power and cooling 750w.
To my happyness comp booted up at 4ghz and seemd stable enough for 2 hours. (just searching net and stuff) then boom, comp turns off.
okay so i thought maybe it wasnt stable. tried to reboot but to no avail. all i get is about half a second when my fans try to spin up but then it just cuts off again.
i have tested the usual out of box, 1 stick of mem, clear cmos with power cord removed, removed battery for 10 minutes but nothing. Also did the same with the old psu which was working.
All that happends is it trys to start, eg leds everywhere flicker and i mean flicker there is no way i can see what order. Im refering to the 8 leds down the bottom. the flick on then off.
After trying to start it up once, i wont get another chance to start it. eg i have to remove the power and wait till the power is completly gone from the system b4 i can try again and only have the same thing happen.
    Thanks for your help guys

Something may have been damaged during overclocking.  What voltages did you work on when you overclocked the system to ~4GHZ?  What where your temperatures?

Next, I see that you are using a Beta BIOS, what's the reason behind it?
I suppose the reason is this:
