MSI 770 Lightning LE temps

Hi,
I own MSI 770 Lightning LE version and I'm not sure if the temps i get with it are OK. In many reviews of the normal 770 lightning they mention that the card is very cool and they usually reach something between 60-70 C on full load.
However my card can easily get to 80 C in benchmarks like Valley or when playing games like Far Cry 3 even if it's not OCed and I'm switched to default fan speed. With that temps the fan is hitting about 70% which makes it very loud + the GPU is ofc downclocking. So I increased the temp limit and lowered the fan speeds a bit since the noise was annoying, but it's not ideal solution.
My case is Fractal Define Mini with 2x in and out fans @ 850 RPM, so airflow should be OK.
Can somebody tell me if it's OK or not? I'm wondering if I should RMA it (unfortunately the shop where I purchased it is not selling it anymore else I'd already try to do that).
Thanks

You can't compare review systems and your own 1:1. With a mini case like yours and low speed fans nothing else is to be expected especially with extreme load like valley.

  • MSI 680 Lightning high temps

Just got the card and it idles at 60-65 and the sec I run anything intensive temps rise until it shuts down.
The sec i run a game temps will spike and shutdown. Before I request a RMA, would it void the warranty if i reapply TIM to the card to see if that helps?

Yes, you can try this. If you don't broke anything during procedure the warranty will be fine.
But you also can contact reseller 1st and notice him, and to ask for such permission.
Else if theire no improvment he may said that this is hapends because you messed with it

  • MSI GTX 770 LIGHTNING - Unexpectedly Powers Off During 3DMark Demo (Ice Storm)

I run the 3DMark demo (I believe Ice Storm is the benchmark) on my PC containing this MSI GTX 770 LIGHTNING and at about 15 seconds or so, my PC suddenly powers off. I know that at least somebody else has experienced this issue before, but is this a common/semi-common problem? Is it something to be worried about? If I were to run other things (games, benchmarks, etc.) fine but still have problems with this demo, would that be indicative of an issue with the demo, or an issue with over-stressed hardware that still needs to be RMAed?
All other benchmarks runs fine, like even UNIGINE HEAVEN or games are now stable.   PSU IS:

  • MSI R5870 Lightning temp

Anyone using this GPU? and what's the highest temp your card reach?
I was playing Crysis Warhead with max setting, my GPU temp reach 90, so the game will crash.
    Anyone having such problem?

If you follow this link to a review of the card you can see they measured a load temp of 78C: http://www.guru3d.com/article/msi-r5870-lightning-review/7
90C is a little hotter than it should get but I'm a little surprised it crashes. Does it crash in other games too or just Crysis?
In MSI Afterburner, force the fan speed to 100% and run Crysis again. Does it still crash?

  • MSI GTX 770 Lightning 4GB

    Hi,
I was wondering if MSI is currently making a 4GB version of the 770 Lightning. I realize that there is a 4GB "Gaming" model out right now but I was really interested in some of the features that are exclusive to the Lightning. I assume there will not be because we probably would have heard about it by now. I've been looking around on other sites and searching for insight but have been unsuccessful, any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

There will very most likely be no 4GB Lightning. The lineup will be almost identical to the GTX680 series. Only the Twin Frozr model ("GAMING" in 770 series) will be available with added memory. The Lightning just features special overclocking abilities and no added video memory as it is already quite expensive without. With double video ram the price would be too close to the anyway better GTX780. There is also not much demand for 4GB versions of the GTX770.

  • MSI GTX 770 Lightning LE Edition --- Original/LN2 strange overclock results

Ok guys this is very strange OVERCLOCK results!! On my gtx 770 Lightning LE card i have 2 bios which need to be physically move(switch) by my hand on Graphis Card!
In ORGINAL Bios my OC results is higher and better then on LN2 Bios
    MSI Settings on ORGINAL bios:
Name: GeForce GTX 770 Lightning LE
    Driver Version: 334.89
    Core Voltage: +100
    Power Limired +109%
    Core Clock: +150 Mhz  GPU-Z-> GPU CLOCK: 1222; Boost: 1274 ; GPU 2.0 Boost: 1306 Mhz
    Mmemory Clock: +500
    Picture of ORIGINAL BIOS: http://www.mediafire.com/view/myfiles/#j6zvj9n0u6dhla2
    LN2 BIOS:
    Name: GeForce gtx 770
    Driver Version: 334.89
    Core Voltage: +12
    Power Limited: +109%
    Core Clock : +110Mhz ;  GPU-Z-> GPU CLOCK: 1182; Boost: 1234 ; GPU 2.0 Boost: 1267 Mhz
    Memory Clock: + 500Mhz
    Picture of LN2  BIOS: http://www.mediafire.com/view/myfiles/#oq818435y296uj3
With LN2 BIOS we need to have more OVERCLOCK potential or not? For me ORGINAL bios give me more OVERCLOCK potential than LN2 BIOS. Why is it so?

Quote from: flobelix on 26-March-14, 04:10:14
Obviously you don't understand. LN2 allows to set higher voltages not increase oc potential with the same settings. When setting less extra voltage in LN2 than in normal vbios results can't be better.
Then why is voltage on "LN2 BIOS" only +12 and on ORIGINAL BIOS much better  +100?
    Look this: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2013/09/22/msi_geforce_gtx_780_lightning_video_card_review/3#.UzHuZPldWio
He have more OC potencial with LN2 BIOS! I really don't understand! And in Afterburner writes: MSI gtx 780 Lightning (LN2)
And when is my card on ORIGINAL bios in Afterburner writes " Graphics Card: MSI GTX 770 Lightning LE"
When is card on LN2 bios in Afterburner writes "Graphics Card: GeForce gtx 770"

  • MSI N770 Lightning.. The Lightning Continues...

From MSI N680GTX Lightning to the R7970 Lightning, now comes the new N770 Lightning.
First of all let’s talk about the GTX 770 GPU Chip. It has the same GK104 graphics processor as the GTX 680 have but cranked up. Reference core and boost clocks have been raised to 1046MHz/1085Mhz and the memory speed to 7GT/s.  Aside from this, the GTX 770 GPU Boost has been upgraded to version 2.0, allowing Higher Clocks to punch in more often.
Comparing: GTX 770 vs GTX 680
    Stream Processor:1536 - 1536
    Texture Units:128 - 128
    ROPs   :32 - 32
    Core Clock:1046Mhz - 1006MHz
    Boost Clock:1085Mhz - 1058MHz
    Memory Clock: 7Ghz GDDR5 - 6Ghz GDDR5
Memory Bus Width: 256 Bit - 256 Bit
    TDP:230W - 195W
    Transistor Count: 3.5B - 3.5B
    Mftg. Process: 28nm - 28nm
Now with the N770 Lightning, the video card has been factory overclocked to a core speed of 1150 Mhz (ref. 1046) and a boost clock of 1202 Mhz (ref. 1085) while the memory clock has been kept on a standard speed of 7010 Mhz. The GTX 770 Lightning will also use MSI’s GPU Reactor providing higher power levels and cleaner signals for the GPU. Other components that MSI have integrated into the card are the Military Class IV, voltage check points and 8+8pin PCIE Power connector thus making the video card break limits in the world of overclocking.
Here are the things you will find upon flipping the front cover of the box…
    For the accessories…
    •Certificate of Quality & Stability
    •Quick User’s Guide
    •Driver Utility Disc
    •SLI Bridge Connector
•V-Check Point Connectors  (connecting this with your digital multi-meter will show the actual voltages of certain components of the video card like the GPU)
•2x 6 Pin to 8 Pin Power Connectors
    •DVI to VGA Adapter
With the Lightning’s TwinFrozr 4 cooler, it promises to bring the video card temps below 60c and at the same time being quiet. It also boast the 2x 10cm Propeller Blade Fan technology which provides higher air volume to the card for faster heat dissipation. Dust Removal technology is also been implemented now in the Lightning series of video cards as it automatically cleans your video card.
Two SLI bridges on top of the N770 Lightning and to clarify things up, it is only intended for a Tri-SLI configuration.
Below are three SuperPipes with one being on top which also helps cooling the GPU chip. You can also see at the bottom part of the video card the Golden SSC Military Class IV Components.. These components are no ordinary; they can withstand extreme conditions, run with stability and power efficiency and provides longer lifespan to the video card.
Checking the back side of the card, back-plate is installed thus making it cooler and to avoid bending the video card. The blue circle thing you see there is the GPU-Reactor – an additional PCB connected at the back of the video card which also lights up when powered up.
    Video Outputs:
    •Dual-link DVI-I x 1
    •Dual-link DVI-D x 1
    •DisplayPort x 1 (version 1.2)
    •HDMI x 1 (version 1.4a)

    Hello,
About PSU: 450W is not enough for either of them. For 760 or above it is recommended to have 600W (as the minimum) power supply.
Both cards has similar cooling, but I would prefer lightning edition (hey, it's 770 not 760 which is little bit lower in performance). However if you also look for the design to fit your case, then that's up to you. Obviously if the card will run hot, most likely you will have to reapply thermal paste (very common in case of GPUs).

  • MSI N770 Lightning vs MSI N760 Hawk

    Hi guys.
I don't know which graphic card should I get. Originally I wanted to get XFX or Asus R9 280,but they both s**k. So I decided to think about opposite "camp" and go with NVidia based cards.
Now,I heard a lot of good things about N760 Hawk,a lot of people say that it's best 760 card which I could find. I also heard a lot of great things about N780 Lightning, but price is crazy,so I thought I could get N770 Lightning.
My shop is very limited with brands, and at the moment they don't have N770 Lightning, and they have N760 Hawk.
I've heard N760 Hawk has 5 heat pipes (compared to Gaming which has 4). So I was wondering if N770 Lightning or the Lightning series have also 5 heat pipes? How are the temperatures compared on this 2 cards?
If 770 Lightning has 5 heat pipes and it's colder.
Question is: I have XFX 450W Core Edition PSU (Best 450W PSU which exists),and I was wondering: will my PSU be enough for N770 Lightning if I'm not planing to OC graphic card?
    Tnx for your answers.

  • Problems with msi r6970 lightning

Hey guys I am having big issues with my 6970 lightning. Ok first I got this card to replace a second sapphire 6970 that I was running in xfire with another sapphire 6970. I since gave one of the sapphires to a relative. When I first got the lightning all went smooth benched it in a single card config then added my other sapphire 6970. No issues. Out of nowhere things rapidly went downhill. I first received a crash in grfs as I loaded shattered mountain. Froze with a sound loop then the screen turned black with a continued sound loop that eventually stopped. Reset the machine figuring it was the OC. On the lighting I had it set as 985/1400 fan 80% voltage @ 1.300 vlts. Prior to the crash I used a combo of heaven 3.0, kombustor and 3dmark 11 all passed numerous loops without issues. Again thinking it was the oc I down clocked to stock then fired up grfs multiplayer which crashed n froze on the main menu. I then  ran heaven and after 10 min a solid black screen that eventually recovered throwing a display driver has stopped responding but has recovered. Now I knew something was up.
I then ran kombustor same issues black screens sometimes a 8bit Nintendo looking screen when u need to blow in the cartridge. After countless hours of stress testing my CPU with prime, memtest, and Intel burn, I ruled out my other hardware as being the cause. I ran 2 hours of prime, Intel burn passed the maximum stress test, memtest passed until about 500% on each iteration (7 to be exact) windows version. This both with my OC and at stock. Here's for the finale I have a second machine (ill include both machines at the bottom of this post) I installed the lightening in the second rig not one single issue no black screen, no 8bit Nintendo crashes nada. Again I've tried every fix known to no prevail. Reinstalled drivers 12.10 rolled back to 12.8 used driver fusion to clear out the old remnants, swapping cards and systems. The lightning ran flawless in the old rig for hours. Now the sapphire card runs all the gpu stress tests I've tried flawlessly in the main rig at stock and OC. so I assumed the lightning was dying. But I tried the lightning in my second AMD pc (with a MSI mobo coincidentally) and it ran heaven,  kombuster, and games without a single crash.
The only option I didn't try was taking the PSU out of the main pc and using it in the older pc to rule out the psu. But that still don't explain why the sapphire card works perfectly in the main rig and not the lightning. The second fix I didn't try was updating the mobo bios I'm using the f3 gigabyte has up to the f6 but I never had issues b4 and my sapphire 6970 and when I had two in xfire, ran perfect in the main pc with stock and oc settings, with the current PSU and bios. Food for though, gpu temps  sapphire 45c to 50c idle 75c to 80c load. Lightning 41c idle 70c to 74c load. Right where they need to be. Another thing to add I originally had a gigabyte Odin 1200 PSU that got ... Well let's say replaced (garbage of a PSU) the HX750 meets AMD requirements for xfire 6970s this almost rules out everything except BIOS or worst case the lightning just ain't compatible with the gigabyte mobo. Any ideas how to get this card to work after all the testing I know its not defective. Sry for the long post.

I also use cpuid hwmonitor to check temps n volts 12 vlt rail is at 12.05 during load. The gpu load temps on the lightning nvr exceed 72c at stock and 76c with the oc. Should I get a new mobo? Compatibility issue? I was looking at a asrock 990fx extreme 3 as this would allow me to upgrade my CPU later if I choose. I am on my current main pc bc bulldozer didn't grab me. Some benches r less than the x6s, my two 6970s perform btr than a single 7970 for my needs and the only increase I would see is if I got two 7970s that's way to much coin n would be bottlenecked by my current CPU I'm sure. Any ideas? I'm at a loss

  • Artifacts on screen. GOP/ UEFI VBIOS request GTX 770 Lightning.

    Hi
So some background first. I bought a refurb certified MSI lightning 770. But had troubles with it right off the bat. Artifacts would pop up on screen even while PC was booting. And then while on desktop, the display driver would suddenly crash. Really didn't know what to do. So I went to tech-power up to see if Flashing a bios would help
It sorta did. But now like whenever there's a sudden vibration on my desk the driver crashes again (happened just now too while i was typing. Seems like it doesn't even need vibrations :|) Not sure what the problem is. But to pinpoint that I want to have the absolute correct BIOS (Both original and LN2).
    Here's my serial number: 602-V283-11SB131011531
Here's the vBIOS the card shipped with (had to change extension to attach)

    Hi
That's what I assumed too. However the first system I tried was on a friend's. It had the exact same issues as mine. his system is and MSI z97 gaming 3 with core i5 4590 and corsair 600W bronze PSU.
I then tried it on mine, and I'm facing the same issues.
From what I've seen so far, when my casing is lying flat on the ground, the card seems to work. But whenever the casing is upright, I face issues (windows boots in 8 color mode even).
Is there something wrong with the card's pci connector then? I have other cards as well (another MSI 770 OC and gigabyte 280x) and they don't have any such issues.

Playing aan entire level of Crysis or Crysis2 with extreme settings is a very sure way to test. A multiplayer round of BF3 at max settings is also a good test.
If you got the max stable clockrates without overvolting and temps are fine. Go on adding voltage in small steps and agin try the highest max clockrate of any voltage step. That way you'll find the total max clockrate. At some point adding voltage will have no effect anymore and that is the highest clockrate. Remember that voltage unlike just higher clockrates will increase the temps massively.
    Agreed with flobelix
Crysis 2 with ultra setting and set Vsync to Disabled is a very hard test in real life application, I don't use furmark or kombustor. To test stability first I run Vantage and 3DMark2011 then playing Crysis 2 about 2 - 3 hours every day for aweek or 2 weeks and if pass then I call it stable
I use GTX580 Lightning and at stock volt I can do 920/2200 with all little DIP switches turned ON/Enabled/Unlocked excluding Xtreme cooling LN2 DIP switch since I use normal air cooling and not LN2. If I let all DIP switches to their stock/OFF even at 900MHz I can't pass Vantage.
For safe daily OC better stay under 80c for your core temp and under 70c for your VRM & Memory temp  also do not use beyond +200mv for your core voltage (+200mv is the max value)
Note : For 24/7 I use 980/2300 with +112mv/+40mv. VRM and memory temp are under 60c and Core temp is under 80c.

  • MSI 680 Lightning Downclocking

Hey guys - I am hoping someone can help me out with a problem I am having with my 680 lightnings in SLI..
Basically, when playing just about any game, (BF3, FC3, even WoW) the core clock on both cards fluctuates like crazy - along with temps.
I have MSI afterburner going with a simple +100 on the cores (no over voltage) both under water - don't exceed 45C.
I have the on screen display and the core mhz on the cards keeps going from 1293 to under 900, back up to 1200 and down - and keeps doing this whether I am in graphics intensive scenes or not. The temps are also CONSTANTLY fluctuating around 39-45C... constantly moving up and down its really weird. Looking at the actual graphs, it looks like a heartbeat monitor - just without the consistency of one.
I currently have MSI 2.2.3, but the same thing happens with 2.3.0 as well. I have cleaned and reinstalled drivers (multiple ones from beta to current to past ones). Only thing I haven't done is reinstalled W7, though I don't know that going that route is going to change anything. I have tested both cards by themselves and they work great without any problems - I can actually OC them to around 1390 individually with some voltage added full stable, but when in SLI, nothing I have done seems to stop this constant fluctuation and no matter how much voltage I give them, I cannot get past a simple +100 on the core (to like 1293). This fluctuation is what I think is causing alot of the recent crashes I have experienced in game - where as I had none before.
The only thing I have done differently is that I recently switched to a Silverstone Raven 02 case. Any ideas? I have bios 80.04.09.00.F8 on both cards.
    Below are my specs:
    2500k @ 4.5
    Maximus V Formula
    8gb Corsair @ 1866mhz
    SeaSonic X 850w psu
--originally posted on Overclock.net official msi gtx680 lightning owners club post #4545-- It looks like others are having these issues.

Thanks for the reply on this!
Yes, my power limit is set to max and I am under Maximum Performance in power management along with single monitor performance (no multi for me just yet).
I really don't know what it is that is causing this. If I go down to simply +100 oc, with no over voltage, I play everything pretty smoothly without much trouble, except for the CONSTANT downclocking and temp changes. Everything stays relatively smooth. I don't know why they only OC to this when in SLI, but get much much more individually - drives me nuts.
