MSI 7900 GTO: improve cooling with Arctic Silver 5?

Would it be useful to improve the cooling of my 7900 GTO with Arctic Silver 5?
If yes, do I need to apply this thermal paste on the main chip only or also on the 6 (or 8?) other chips around the main one?
My 7900 GTO is running at 690/810 MHz. (Riva Tuner)
In 2D-mode the card reaches a temperature of about 38 degrees Celsius, in 3D-mode it reaches temperatures between 45 degrees (older game like Counter Strike: Source) and 60 degrees (newer games like Medal of Honor Airborne or Call of Duty 4).

I owe a 7900 GTX (Similar to the GTO) and it's 44C idle and after some long game session about 67C.
If your never even goes above 60C, don't EVER think about replacing the cooler; It'll only void your warranty. The 7900 GTO can easily bare 70-80 degrees. If it ever gets above 80, I would start worrying. Ofcourse 80 isn't damaging anything yet, but it could lower the life of your graphics card!
60°C is actually really low for a high-end graphics card, under full-load You even overclocked it, and still it's only 60°C!

  • MSI 7900 GTO what PSU specs?

I am thinking of buying a MSI 7900 GTO graphics card.
What would be the specs my PSU needs to fulfil?
My PSU does have this extra PCI-e connector but I am afraid it will be to weak for this card.
It is a Coolermaster 430W Extreme Power.
I am an absolute no-know on these matters but as I understood from this great forum the amps on the +12V line are what is important.
The thing is that the specs give 2 values for the +12V line:
    +12V 1 = 14A
    +12V 2 = 15A
    What does this mean?
Oh, btw my system specs are:
    Asrock 4COREDUAL-VSTA mainboard
    Intel Core2 Duo 6400 @ 2x 2.13 Ghz
    Zalman CNPS 8000
    2x 1GB Aeneon @ 667 Mhz (4-4-4-12)
    1x WD 250 GB IDE
    1x NEC 5170A DVD RW
1x LG GDR 8164B DVD ROM
Coolermaster Extreme Power 430W PSU (RS-430-PCAR)

    Thanks for the quick replies!
So I guess that will mean a new PSU after all. I wanted to have a modular PSU anyway, so this is my chance..;-)
Although I still don't know what PSU to pick. I was thinking about an Enermax, a Seasonic or a be-Quiet. The PSU's I am thinking about are about 500W but they don't have at least 20 amps on the splitted +12V rail........Do I really have to purchase a big 600W or more PSU?
    @Vernonion:
Actually I am thinking of overclocking this MSI 7900 GTO @ 7900 GTX instead of downclocking it....
My neighbour did it, he is the one that recommended this card to me, since you can have the performance of a 7900 GTX for about half the price!
So you really like my setup...? Thanks! It is nothing special but for me it is more than enough.
I am happy with this board, especially after I have upgraded the BIOS to the latest version. Before I had problems with the memory, now it is running like a charm
I've bought this mobo because it was perfect for upgrading my system: I could/can still use my old AGP graphics card (Nvidea 6200 256mb) which I want to upgrade now. Since I also have a PCI-e slot, I can upgrade to such a card. I am still using all my 'old' IDE devices, like HDD, DVD RW and DVD ROM. Thanks for not cursing me since I purchased anything other than a MSI mobo
You guys are great and this forum really rules!

  • Broken MSI 7900 GTO

    I have the following problem:
Last week i wanted to see a movie on television, so i switched from normal output to TV-out. After this my computer gets silent. After removing my graphic card from my computer system, my system was bootable. So i assume that i had an electrical breakdown. Even with my graphic card into the pci-e slot and without the pci-e powerconnector the system was bootable (the fan of graphic card was rotating).
I have tried the graphic card in another computer but same problem appears.
    System specs:
    * E4300
    * MSI P6n sli platinum
    * Kingston 2x1gb pc8500
    * Maxtor 160 gb
    * MSI 7900 GTO
    * Enermax EAX495
    * Windows XP prof
Because I could not find my invoice of the card , i turned to my local MSI Office but without succes. They can not do anything without a warranty paper or bill.
    What to do?...

I think you have the Noisetaker I version of Enermax, that one has splitrail and you may NOT add them up.
Only the new version Noisetaker II can do 32A on the rails.
As for testing in another computer, I presume you tested the videocard in another system and that other system doesn't start as well?
If the non-starting thing is happening in the other system too, then the card must be broken.

the system works great in desktop but as soon as i go in 3d mode it freezes and show strange pixels after 2-3 min.
The CPU and ram has been tested so it's not there the fault is. It shall be said that this started the same day i got the new rig
that's Thursday, so it hasn't worked  correct.

  • Improving cooling for B&W processor

After determining that my B&W G3's processor was causing frequent freezes due to overheating, I replaced the original thermal pad on the heatsink with thermal compound. Now the freezes seem to be gone--but only if I run with the case open and a small desk fan blowing on the heatsink. When I try running case-closed, it starts freezing up again.
Does anyone have any suggestions for improving the cooling airflow in the B&W case? I am willing to consider sacrificing the internal speaker space, or the drive bay below the CD drive for venting. Might it also be possible to find a direct-mount fan for the heatsink?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Pete

    Jeff,
I generally do not leave it on 24/7; I have a nightly Retrospect backup session scheduled to launch at 2:00 AM, after which the machine automatically shuts down. When freezes were happening frequently, it often would freeze up during (or even before) the backup session; this has not happened at all since I started running case-open with the fan.
I used a thermal compound labeled as "Ceramique by Arctic Silver" that I purchased from RadioShack. I made good & sure that I installed the retainer clip in the correct orientation, with the bend over the processor core.
The fans appear to be operating fine. Is the chassis fan supposed to blow air onto the board or out the back panel? And what is the airflow direction for the PS fan? What is the airflow path (and intake/exhaust points of the case) for the chassis fan?

  • Arctic Silver not working???

So...after I had to rip off AMD's thermal superglue to check what was written on my CPU (this was before I actually got the thing working. Re:here) I removed the AMD stuff and had to put some cheap paste I had lying around on it... got temps of 38*C idle with CnQ on, so CPU was at 1Ghz and full load at 2.4Ghz peaked at 59*C, which was with stock HSF.
Bought myself some arcticlean and arctic silver 5, did everything per their instructions and got 15*C Idle and 34*C under load on the first test (3Dmark, games, CPU Burn etc) then I left computer off all day, just came back now and the temps are nearly back to before - 38*C idle, 56*C load! - ???
Is this supposed to happen or what?

15*C Idle and 34*C under load are likely as not bogus readings unless you left your computer out in the artic chill. Typical temps for the A64 series chips are in the 40c to 60c region. Afterall you do have a lot of heat with 300 million transistors to disapate. LOL
The first set of temps are within reason and are pretty darn normal especially if you have a small cramped case with air cooling. Nothing to worry about there. Artic Silver 5 if applied correctly as per their instructions can lower the temps a couple degrees Celcious. However it is not a huge difference over what AMD uses.
Clawhammers like you have are one of the Hotter A64 chips. The newer Socket 939 based 90NM chips are somewhat cooler by as many as 10 degrees Celcious but can also under extreme load reach close to what a Clawhammer normally sits at.
So yes that 15C and 38C at full load are pretty much bogus unless of course you use alternative cooling and even then darn good cooling at that.

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum cooler

is this cpu cooler zalman CNPS7000B-Cu  compatible with the k8n neo2 platinum nf3 motherboard? i cant find it anywhere in zalmans compatability list, if it does fit the board, what does fitting it entail? can i install it like a normal hs/f or are there special fitting instructions, if so where can i find these instructions? already tried google

The Zalman cooler is heavy, but its fine as long as the nipples are tightly fastened and the screws that going into the nipples, that hold the cooler in place are tightly fastened..
Also use some artic silver 5 thermal compound and ensure you read the
    http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm
for instructions on fitting a AMD64 processor, arctic silver recommend a different technique for these types of processor , Im sure theres not much different in the end result, but I like to do things by the manufacturers book as they generall know best.
    Good luck

all my system fully updated ( MB bios , drivers ...security updates ...etc
    my story :
being a big fan of the game world of the warcraft made me always thinking of getting the best VGA cards , this lead me to the idea of upgrading my VGA from ATI x850xt to get a new MSI 7900GTX 512 PCI-E
things were great for the first 4 months , nothing was there , best ever VGA i may get and use , almost one months ago i had to install the game again due to many suddens errors ( mainly corrupted files in theg ame folder )
since then i started to have things i would never had before , what im having now is
1-  game screen start to have long lines , screen freez then system crash with BOSD saying i have  nvidia error dll file ,
2- my game kept always having corrupted files and i always had to reinstall ,
    what i have tried are
updating , rolling back the VGA driver ( from MSI site and the NVIDIA site) , updating the BIOS of MB form gigabyte site
formatting and getting a fresh copy of winXP
reducing the clock speed to min (eventhough my card temp never passed 60 degree)
i did also a mem test on my rams , i found that my corrupted files was cuased by one of them , so when it was removed corrupted files problem was fixed , however my card still crash and nothing changed
i tired useing opengl , nosound , and reduced all VGA options to be off at the game setting , but still crash
i already contacted tech supp at MSI and used the driver they advised me to use , but nothing change ,
the VGA crash happen in a wiered way , sometimes it can stay for 6 hrs without a crash and sometimes every 3 mins
and somtimes it crash at the login screen even before i start the game
i just dont know why it was working for 4 months and crashed now
now my question , is my VGA became a dead card like my ram and i should buy a new one , was that caused by the PSU , should i get a new VGA and keep the PSU or should i get the two of them new , and is there any way to fix my VGA to make it working as before ,
btw , i have tried many 3D games and all give the same crash
    ur help will realy appreciated

  • For those who have switched to arctic silver w/o changing heatsinks. How much did your temps change?

i just went from stock -> zalman + zalman goop (got 10c drops on load) --> zalman + arctic silver 5 (got 5c less than stock, or 5c more than zalman goop) in an attempt to cure my temp problems. ill see how it is tomorrow :D goodnight, i may go back to zalmy goop ~  im currently at 65 under load. slowly going up to 67 where zalmy went from 60-slowly to 63.
edit, these are mbm5 readings by the way.
And yes, i have read the thread about thermal paste. Yes, i know what a bb is.

  • Stolen MSI 7900 GS card?

    Hi,
In some posts BOSSKILLER warned us from stolen 7900 GS cards: http://www.msicomputer.com/msiforms2/stolen.asp
Well, I live in Israel and two weeks ago I bought a computer from one of the biggest computer companies in Israel - Ivory computers. This company is the Israeli importer of MSI's products. My computer includes the MSI 7900 GS VGA card. The computer is very noisy so I opened it to see what is the reason for the noise. There are two reasons: one is the Intel's stock CPU fan (C2D - E6300) and the other is the Green fan on the Green 7900 GS card.
So, BOSSKILLER, what should I do? Is it a legitimate card? Is the Red card better?
If I want to replace the card's fan, what fan you recommend?

    Finally I got an answer:
At first MSI support ignored the warrenty issue and answered on the fan noise issue. I eneterd a new request on the warrenty (stolen card) issue. Here are their answers:
On the noise issue the answer is:
    "Dear customer,
Thank you for contacting the MSI technical support.
If the VGA card's fan is too noise, please reinstall the VGA card and the driver to try. Also, you can install the VGA card on other computer to check. If the problem still exists, please contact your reseller to ask for the help.
    Best wishes,
    MSI technical support team"
and on the warrenty (stolen card) issue the answer is:
    "Dear Sir,
Thank you for using MSI product. If you bought MSI product from MSI's authorized distributor, IVORY, it won't be stolen goods. If you have any question, please contact with IVORY for detail. Thank you.
    Best Regards,
    MSI "
Well, it looks like MSI and Ivory are selling us, the Israelies, the lesser products. They belive we do not deserve to get the same respect as the rest of the world do.
In the past I bought some computers with motherboards and vga cards made by MSI. NO MORE! I will not buy any MSI product again!

  • Arctic Silver Placement

The areas circles in red have this soft sponge like heat sink material which I was just going to leave alone. Should I be replacing this with new material ?  The "dv8 t 1000 cto" is only 8 months old and the spongy material is still soft and sticky.
I don't think it would be necessary to apply the Arctic Silver directly on this spongy material as I think it would impede the heat transfer in these areas.
I am glad I did go ahead with this procedure as the original compound over the CPU and GPU was applied too heavily and I don't think it was doing the greatest job.
Any advice here would be much appreciated.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

No need to replace the thermal pad, still in good condition. However, the best procedure is to replace it.
Spread the thermal compound evenly on the CPU, GPU and to its heat sink assembly.
Please take extra caution to install it back, make sure it is even.

  • MSI P965 - what they do with my friend?

I am soory but I am MSI user many years and now I am wery disapointed with tis mobo, it is realy sux, nothing works like it must, network problems, dual core status in device manager problem, boot problem, I don't know what in the future, three of us bought this mobo and just one works so so, two friends bought Gigabyt, they have no problem at all 6300 2,13 works on 3,4 without any special cooling, mybe new bios help us to be happy with MSI mobo like in the past.
With my mobo I have problem with network sometimes I can go to surf sometimes I can't I must refresh network driver, restart and work, many times also don't work, and I must tell you that I have pretty much expireances with all operating sistems, just with english I have problems.
    Have nice time!
    Scenic ???

Ok, I work in a store which sell MSI product and I am also MSI fun until I bought this mobo P965. I have MSI NX7600GT VGA card and Core2 6400 cpu, Vhen I instal OS Win XP Pro the system works terible slow, I can work just with one aplication otherwise system hangs. I solved this problem after a few days working, also with this forum helps, and solved problem with CPU, the system works good now, but I have all the time problem with ethernet, if I turn comp on and try to go to internet I can't until I restart ethernet driver, but not one or two times, many times, 4 or 5 times turn of, restart etc... When I get conection works good! My son also has the same problem with cpu at the begining, but his mobo works with ethernet normal, who knovs where the problem is...
Today my coworker bought tis mobo and he has much more problems, he can't get two core in system manager, even that he flash bios from 1,3 (original) to 1,4 and finaly 1,5 the problem is stil here, he instal also hotfix for dual cor cpu and nothing chaneced, I must also tell you that he instal OS after first bios flash and also after 1,5 version bios flash and in system manager is one cpu or core.
I am Intel cpu and chipset fun until 1995 last year I have P4 Diamond mobo with Nvidia chipset, a few days ago I change MSI 945 Platinium and  P4 940 for P965 and E6400 and I have a lot of problem, never before with Intel's chipset, I think that MSI make a big mistake with this mobo at all.
When other coworkers, two of them, saw our problems they went to other store and takes Gigabyte mobo, and they dont't have any problems at all.
I must also tell you that I am not owerlockers, I am also good in OS and drivers instalation, so I'like that my system works good, without that kind of I say, basic problems....
Tomorrow I will take other mobo and I will see what will happend with cpu and ethernet.
    Best regards,
    Scenic
    sorry about my english

  • MSI 651 Combo / MS6769 Problem with Temperature

Hi. I´m having some troubles with my mb, since 2 weeks ago. Suddenly, it starts to appear that cpu temperature go 70 º C (158 º F), and i hadn´t do anything. I changed the cooler, and put some new grease, and nothing happen. Then i searched in this forum, and i found a message simmilar, that said something about upgrade bios, and thas what i recently do (WS6769 v1.0 originally, then V1.3, then V1.2). But nothing...
What should i do? buy another mb? I don´t want to.
    Thanks.
    Claudio

Well, i´m pretty sure that it is the mother board, because, i already changed all what´s possible to change: processor, RAM, hd, power supply, processor.
Din: I don´t know what´s "corecenter". I already upgraded BIOS (to v1.2 that supuestly fix my problem), and put thermal paste (grease? in spanish "pasta disipadora") between CPU cooler and CPU. And i do change the processor (i put a p4 1,8GHz), with other FAN processor (CPU cooler), and the same temperature.
    Danny:Those details you ask me:
    In a label on the power supply (lVoltage MAXAmpere): +5V 30A, +3.3V 20A, +12V 15A, -12V 0.8A, -5V 0.5A, +5Vsb 2.5A.
It is a Maxpower 300 Watts ATX, model PX300.
    On BIOS PC Health: Sys Temp: 18ºC/66ºF, CPU Temp 66ºC/150ºF (up to 70ºC), CPU Fan speed 2909 RPM, Vcore 1.68V, 3.3V 3.26V, +5V 5.10V, +12V 12.03V, -12V -12.19V, VBAT(V) 3.26V, 5Vsb(V) 5.14V.
I have a Celeron 1,8 GHz, socket 478, a MSI 651 Combo MS6769 Motheboard, with nothing else. Hd Maxtor 30Gb, Rewriter MSI 52x24x52.
The problem: From one day to another, it wasn´t load XP. It resets itself after a few seconds (about 5 secs). On the BIOS PC Health section, i actived the CPU Temperature beep on "too much degrees" (i don´t remember the exact name, but that´s the idea). And that´s how i realize that the temperature is the problem. I think it is how the motherboard inform the temperature, and it is a nominal temperature, not real. If it´s real, i already had a burnt processor.
Anything else that can help to find a solution for me?
    Very thanks.
    Claudio

  • Arctic Silver Ceramique and Volcano 11 + Xaser Edition heatsink questions

Hi - I appreciate your help on my other threads concerning my motherboard K7N2 Delta 2 - LSR and my PS/2 keyboard problems.
Arctic Silver Ceramique and the Arctic Silver cleaning solutions should be arriving in a couple of days.  I got the replacement K7N2 Delta 2 - LSR motherboard a few days ago.  It looks great, but looks are not everything.
The seller also included a Thermaltake VOLCANO 11 + Xaser Edition heatsink.  It's massive.
    Here's some info:
    http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/coolers/volcano/rs/a1607.htm
Question 1 - Should I bother to install the sensor under the CPU (AMD Athlon XP 3200+ (Barton Core)?  It seems like it could cause trouble.
The heatsink also has a dial to control the fan speed.  It is mounted on the back of the case.  That's easy to install.
Now to the Arctic Silver Ceramique:
    http://www.arcticsilver.com/ceramique.htm
Previously, I've used the thermal pads or Arctic Silver 5.  When using Arctic Silver 5, I've always spread it over the full surface of the CPU.
The Ceramique instructions say it should be applied like this:
This gives me the jitters.   (I have the 32 bit Athlon on the left.)
Question 2:  Is this how you personally apply Ceramique?
Question 3: Will it be OK to spread it like Arctic Silver 5?
    Thanks
    Joe

    I go with Wonkanoby.
If you don't put on too much you can use a single drop, and then have the pressure of the seating spreading the paste. Your "old" method is usually better.
The fan may be temp. controlled. If BIOS doesn't pick up the temp. and fan speed and can control it you should add the sensor. I don't know if BIOS will, so if you are worried about noise and such you better check the Internet for someone with personal experience of Volcano.
A bit off: Thermaltake has never ever made good heatsinks, so your dealer must be very relieved now.  Spire makes the best for motherboards that don't have the holes around the processor socket.
