Msi 7900gt problems

Hey folks!
Just got a new system:
MSI P965 Neo-f motherboard
E6400 Core 2 Duo
320G Seagate HD
Lite On 18X dvd burner
1G ddr2 667 kingston ram
MSI 7900GT
500 Watt P.S.
Running Win XP home.
This system was put together locally.
The MSI 7900gt seems to be experiencing symptoms of the RAM problems others have mentioned here and in fact can be found easily with a google search on "7900 rma".
I first noticed this when running 3dmark06.....after the first several tests it locks up for several minutes and then the PC reboots. I believe it is during the deep freeze section of 3dmark06 where it freezes(appropriate).
My 7900gt is   "NX7900GT-VT2D156E-HD"  s/n 602-V066-05SB0605127869
It came with Serious Sam. Another thread here mentions this number as having been the fixed 7900gt's......but that same thread had a user with a s/n real close to mine having the same problem.....  the "0605" is a date meaning May 2006. Apparently these boards were still using bad memory as of that date. Over on eVGA site it seems they had to stop using Samsung memory and go to Inferion( these details are from memory ) before their problems with the 7900 GT were solved.
My quandary at this point ......I will be taking the PC back to the local shop(I've only had it 1 week) and asking him to replace the card...of course. Is it worth it to update drivers first and check? I was planning on it ...... but it's probably a waste of time..Right now it is running 84.19.I downloaded the 94.17( I think..the one from the MSI d/l page), but I haven't installed it yet. Do I really need to use drivercleaner after removing the old driver and before installing new? Is this a painless process? I do not have a floppy ...do I need?
I know some of you will tell me to check the Power Supply specs.....I don't even want to open the case till the shop has directed me.....
Since his supplier will probably ship another one of these from the same LOT, should I try and get him to swap it for an entirely different card? I do not wish to go thru 5 of these to find a good one! He charged approx $280 for this card.....and he seems to really like MSI stuff. Should I go for an ATI based card? What ATI based card would be comparable performance wise to the 7900gt? The 1900? 1950? Same cost all things considered?
This is a general purpose machine with an emphasis on gaming ...I want to run Oblivion at reasonable levels...OBLIVION is the reason I selected this card, but I have heard that Oblivion gets along better with ATI stuff( as far as AA and HDR being enabled at the same time).
OK....I've spouted enough here....am I jumping the gun?  Anyone have ANY suggestions?
I am open to any comments or help you guys can provide!
Thanks in advance for your replies!

Wader had a different PSU at the beginning and switched to the OCZ which did correct some issues as he stated. I also don't recommend gear I have no experience with so I simply do not recommend Antec. I have used them back in the day but I have no experience with the newer one's and do with the OCZ I use now. Nor am I saying the Antec is bad either. I simply don't know one way or the other about them. Some Antecs I have seen folks use at a couple stages along the way did have issues and Antec did work with folks to get those issues sorted. So just saying it is an Antec and they are good is not something I do either. I preffer to give folks some ideas based on my experience rather than be a fanboy of a given product.
As you may have guessed I have been a tech for some time and yes I have seen drivers cause issues with Vid Cards and other devices. I also commonly test quite a few drivers with my own vid cards as well. And yes I have seen artifacting due to drivers. It does happen all the time.
However most cards that artifact are not driver issues. Many were overclocked or run hot. That does not mean that someone should assume just because a card is showing artifacts that the card is bad. It can be a driver issue or other things causing such to happen. I recommend trying to look at some of them first like having enough power or trying a few drivers. PSU issues can usually be spotted when folks have substandard 12v amps now days. Trying drivers is free and simply takes a bit of time.
If everything else is OK then RMA the card. Anyone can get a bad card. If there is a bad series or even a bad batch of cards that is upto the maker and the retailers to sort out which usually happens quite quickly. Granted you had experience with a bad batch or series card. However that issue should be behind everyone at this stage as I can't imagine retailers keeping them around since you had your issues. What MSI did to make the card better is beyond me. However I seriously have doubts that any of those cards are still anywhere to be found. If perhaps someone has one an RMA will handle that. Any maker can have those isssues as well. Just because MSI does not come to the forum to tell all does not mean they do not respond to these and work with there distribution and retail channels to solve them as quickly as they can. So what I would say to you is that while you had an issue and maybe it was not handled well through the retailer does not make MSI a bad maker.
Everything is a process. Even troubleshooting here. The folks that help out here could likely solve the problems in minutes if they were in front of the computer. However we have to work with info we are given and can ask for. This does make the process slower. However we can start to track issues as well. One thing we did see early on with these cards was the fact that quite a few early cards did have issues and that info was gathered. However before any conclussions or details could be sorted MSI was already working with their channels to get updated cards out there. You happened to get caught in this process for which we all felt bad for what happened to you. Newegg is usually reliable for taking these issues into account and getting them sorted quickly. Why this happened with yours we have no clue here other than to know it was not normally what happens. I understand your reluctance to buy MSI vid cards now. I have had much the same happen to me with ATi cards and thus my reluctance to ever own an ATi card again for any reason. However it happened to me with a 100 lot of cards and not just a few. As it was never sorted and my company was stuck with them I think I may have a better reason to dislike a given company. So yes I do feel your pain. However that said I think that MSI is great with their support of their gear and while sometimes things happen what you experienced has little to do with what started this topic. Wader may just have a bad card. Let him try the driver and let's see what he finds out and go from there. If the card is bad then he can simply RMA it and all is good. If it is a driver then he won't have to do more.
Wader I only have what is said to go on. I believe you when you say your not into some conspecary mode. It was what it was starting to sound like and yes we do get nutjobs here all the time that try to make a consperacy out of any little thing so you can understand my position I hope. It could be heat if you have low case cooling or a snakes nest of wires blocking airflow. All these new cards run very warm and can heat up easy. However if your getting good airflow then this should not happen. Overheating can also be caused from badly applied TIM between the componants and the Heatsync. However as checking that can also void the warrenty I would preffer to tell you to RMA the card rather than redo the TIM material even though I redo all my own as I get them. I sismply do not trust machine applied TIM. LOL OK TIM is Thermal Interface Material or the goop betweeen the componants and the HeatSync. And we don't need to physically shake hands either. I think we just did lad.

if you do have a PSU in your PC, have a look on the label on its side and post its specs

tried out an other psu , 500W , but still the same probs, and it worked perfect before with the same exact psu ... so don't really think it's the psu that causes the prob...
7900GT needs a lot of power, so you need a good quality stable PSU. without knowing more about your PSU, it is difficult to say if your problem is power related or not
the other thing you need to try is to test this VGA card in another known working computer, then you can see if the problem follows the card, or stays with your computer

  • Msi 7900gt nwn 2

Some of you might remember me from 10 months ago........
I had some problems with artifacting and lockup in 3dmark07 which seemed to be cured with a better power supply.
Everything has been great until now. I completed playing Oblivion with no problems. A few weeks back I fired up Never Winter Nights 2 and although it runs....I get some crazy artifacting after playing for 10-15 minutes.
Now I'm starting to notice a few white pixels on my desktop that don't seem to go away.
The card is a MSI 7900GT ....I have NOT overclocked in any way....simply ruunning stock. I opened up the case and everything looks clean.....blew out any dust.....still noticing the above problems.
I've had this board for just a little less than 1 year...possibly 11 months.
    Any ideas?

    Ok....
Ran ATI Tool and scanned for artifacts several times.
Temps started out at 62 degrees and climbed to                                           87 degrees consistantly.
Test would run approx 7.5 minutes and then it would start beeping. The display window would go yellow at this point. Below object in display window it would say ....
Delta of 15,973,477 in 134635 pixels (117.16 AVG)  No errors for 07:33
Then I would get a dialog box that would say ...Could not compare images,if running debug version of direct x switch to retail version.
After I clicked OK on dialog box, the yellow display would change back to the object which would start rotating at this point and the bottom would say
    556 FPS, 516 AVG..
    So, what next.
Oh....I didn't remove the side panel.....I'll try that.......

  • Opinion of buying MSI 7900GT

As mentioned above, i'm planning to buy a new graphic card and MSI 7900GT is my ideal choice. Did my mobo fully support this card and should I upgrade my mobo bios to the latest version 3.A.
    Motherboard: MSI K8N SLI Platinum
    Current BIOS ver.: 3.1

    Yap Kusanagi,
All 8X AGP Vid Cards work with all 4X and 8X AGP Mobos, all 8X AGP Mobos work with all 8X and 4X Vid Cards, all PCI-E Vid Cards work with all PCI-E Mobos, all PCI-E Mobos work with all PCI-E Vid Cards.

  • MSI 7900GT memory speed?

Is the MSI 7900GT using the nVidia reference spec's. I'd like to confirm the memory speed because when I check the memory speeds on MSI's website, it says
    • 450MHz core clock speed
    • 660MHz 256MB GDDR3 memory
    See this link. http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=NX7900GT-T2D256E&class=vga
However, the nVidia 7900GT reference board is suppose to be 1.32GHZ memory speed. Why is the MSI version of the 7900GT slower memory speed? Or am I reading this wrong. Or does the MSI website have a typo mistake on their website. Please reply to this because if this video card has slower memory than the reference design, then I should purchase a different brand name.
The MSI card I am referring to is MSI 7900GT, P/N:MS-V801-045, also known as NX7900GT-T2D256E
    Thanks

Now overclock that bastard! 750 (1500)MHz should be kitten play for the memory.
I have had my MSI NX7900GT clocked at 570/1600 for over a week now and it has ran smooth at those settings.. Now i did replace the stock cooling with ARCTIC COOLING AVC-NV5R3 NV Silencer Rev.3 and Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound ..
It idles at 37-38F at those setting and scored a 8920 on 3Dmark05 with an AMD 64 3200+ running at 2009mhz stock..
    I love this Card

I just recently built a computer.
When I turn the computer on it stops at the MSI Platinum screen.
When I hit the reset button the computer reboots into windows. (Most of the times)
    I am not over clocking.
I have loaded the defaults in the BIOS.
I have flashed the BIOS, updated all motherboard drivers, and video drivers.
I have run memtest 23 passes and no errors.
I have a thermaltake power supply 400 watts.
There are no beeps codes at post. The case didn't come with a speaker.
I have installed windows xp media center twice.
Could this just be an unresolved Bios issue or a bad board?
The computer runs great except for the startup problem.
    Any suggestion would be helpful.

Try stripping down your system to bare minimum. Disconnect all CD drives, Floppy and HDD from your mainboard. Remove all un-needed cards. So you should have only the mainboard, CPU and RAM and a graphics card. Connect PSU to mainboard and power up. Now your PSU should be more than enough to power just that. Does it still lock???
If it does'nt then it something to do with one of the drives or optional cards you are fitting.
If it  does still lock then it something to do with the main components.
I once saw a similar issue to this which maybe unrelated but thats why i asked you to disconnect drives. The issue i saw was down to the HDD not being detected on cold boot. Thus hanging the system, if you left it long enough it carried on and then failed to boot. But press the reset button and it would detect the HDD and load windows, until you switched the PC off again and the cycle would repeat. Now that was fixed by getting a BIOS update. This may not having anything to do with your issue but might be worth a look trying what i said above.

  • 7900gt problems

My first card died after playing fear for 2 weeks.  It was at the msi factory overclocked settings teh whole time.  Then I had the flashing screen of death and the only fix was to restart the computer.  Also games would artifact like crazy.  Then I RMAed the card back to newegg and underclocked the card to nvidia reference specs and it seemed to be fine.  After 2 days I brought the card back up to the msi factory overclock specs and it artifacted but no flashing screen which was nice but I RMAed because the performance wasnt what I paid for .  Has msi fixed the 7900gt probs like evga did supposedly or no?  When I get my 3rd card should I just stick with nvidia reference specs?   I would like to hear some opinions.
    Thanks

I have sent out the card.  Out of curiousity i just want to show this.
    http://msicomputer.com/support/sup_genwar.asp
    From the Date of Manufacture
The warranty period starts from the manufacture date.  To determine the warranty entitlement for the product, the Customer must carefully verify the first four digits of the Products serial number.  The first two-digit number represents the manufacture year and the subsequent two-digit number represents for the manufacture month.
    For example:
    “ 0312 234562 ”       means its manufacture date is December, 2003
    “ 0402 234562 ”       means its manufacture date is February, 2004
my serial number is  0605 127722 so it was manufactured in May, 2006  The cards started coming out in march or around that time.  Fenix said that the cards were fixed at some point at the beginning of my topic and slicksickwilly talked about the new revisions too.  It would seem that my card hasnt been manufactured recently and im guessing that is what newegg.com had in stock.  I think that this maybe the reason for my problems.  Eitherway Im crossing my fingers for MSI to come through with a fresh card.
    Found this on wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_7_Series#GeForce_7900_GT
I think its an interesting read.
    GeForce 7900 GT
This video card was released on 9 March 2006. Like the 7900 GTX, it is a revised version of the G70 GPU(G71) that is produced at 90 nm. It too offers all the features of the 7800 series as well as an attractive performance-to-price ratio.
Featuring 24 pixel pipelines, it is actually faster than the 256 MB version of the GeForce 7800 GTX, yet has an MSRP of $299 USD (for the base clockrate). The overclocked versions are priced up to $349 USD.
Shortly after the initial launch of the 7900GT CO/KO/Superclock series, a trend of hardware instability became more and more prevalent. Some symptoms of the unusually large number of defective cards include: artifacting while rendering graphics in graphics benchmarks such as 3DMark03, 3DMark05, 3DMark06 and Aquamark3, artifacting while playing games, BSODs (Blue Screen of Death), total system restarts, and blinking screen.
A large batch of the 7900 GT XX (note: XX may signify CO/KO/SC variants of the 7900 GT) are believed to have defective and/or malfunctioning memory modules, thus causing instability and ultimately, total card failure. Another proposed cause of large-scale instability among the 7900 GT XX include undervolting from the factory. That is, the 7900 GT XX run at a 1.2 volt GPU core voltage, while their higher end relatives, the 7900 GTX, have 1.4 volt GPU voltages, thus permitting higher clock frequencies (GPU/RAM). The 1.2 core volt coupled with factory clocks of up to 520/770 (1540 effective) may suggest that the core voltage is simply too low to allow for higher clock speeds. Another point to note is that the 7900 GT XX and the 7900 GTX are both based around the exact same core, featuring a 90nm process, allowing for a smaller die size and fewer total transistors within the core itself; it now becomes apparent that the 7900 GT XX are actually meant to run at 1.4 volts, much like the 7900 GTX, but are factory undervolted to 1.2 volts.

Beta 2 or RC1 candidate???? RC1 should support..........
Beta 2 is real, slow and you have alot of updates to DL, but both are pre-release products and will not work 100%.
Even when Vista is released, they will still be alot of hardware that will not work 100% and this is purely because software is always playing catch up to hardware.
It was only September, when Nvidia released some Beta2/RC1 drivers that worked properly........

I am affraid, that the firmware is some special kind of firmware. Because in one of .rar files, which are including of the firmware web (h t t p://faenl.msi.com/index.php?dir=Networking/RG60SE/firmware/), contain picture. On the picture is depicted print screen from admin mode of the router RG60SE and there is available option ENABLE BRIDGES. In old firmware this option I never seen. Basically, cutting out Windows Update as a possible source for a new driver forced it to use the local MSI install files.
Anyone else care to give this a try?
Now I just need to sort out the new hardware serial number nonsense key thing!
    Cheers,
    Matt

  • TS3212 bonjour64.msi - Big problems - Can anyone help?

    Hi everyone!
I have a huge problem with upgrading my iTunes to the new one.  Have been struggling with this for months with still no joy have tried everything suggested , the latest being to install a trial of the WinRAR archiver which seemed sucessful until just near the end - the upgrade could take place as it could not delete the old version of Bonjour64.msi. From my searches I cannot find it exists so I cannot delete it!
PLease can someone out there advise me cos I'm getting close to throwing out my computer!!!
    Thank you Judes x

the upgrade could take place as it could not delete the old version of Bonjour64.msi.
Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another install. Does it go through this time?
