MSI 790FX-GD70 Random Freezes

Hi I need help. My pc which I bought yesterday randomly freezes from time to time and I don't know why. It started freezing yesterday. I tried changing my memory voltage from auto to 1.5 then to 1.65 still the same. Sometimes when it freezes I hear a nonstop beep sometimes the last sound output just gets repeated nonstop. It doesn't matter what I do, whether the PC is idle or if I'm playing games, it freezes. When I play games I can play for an hour or 2. Here's my specs.
AMD Phenom II X4 955BE 3.2ghz
MSI 790FX-GD70
BIOS ver. 1.1
Kingston 2GB DDR3-1333 Module Name:   Kingston 99U5403-002.A00LF
250GB Sata Seagate
Newly Installed Windows XP Pro
nVidia Geforce 7600GT
500w Trend PSU
Going to sleep now. I will reply when I get up later thanks in advance.

Hi,
please test each memory module individually @1.6V and see if the problem still occurs.

Can you please post the exact model name of that PSU and write down the amperage limits (A) for the +12V voltage rail (or each +12V rail, if it has more than one)?

Does this video card have its own 6-Pin +12V Power connector?

  • SOLVED:MSI 790FX-GD70 Freezing probelms?

I recently bought the msi 790fx-gd70 board, along with a amd athlon 2 x2 240 cpu, and 1 stick of kingston hyper x ddr3 1600 2gb ram, now my problem is that the computer keeps halting/freezing at random. I may get 10 minutes without a freeze or it may freeze on boot. I know that the cpu is supported, the bios is at v1.4 and according to the cpu support list, that is fine. Now on the other hand the memory isnt, the code for my memory is KHX1600C9D3/2G. Now i have seen that other kingston memory is supported, eg. the KHX1600C9D3K3/2G. Has it somthing to do with my mem been single channel as opposed to dual channel. 1 stick vs 2. i cant work it out, so that why i posted here, in hope that someone could shed some light
My full system specs are as follows.
    AMD ATHLON 2 X2 240
    KIGSTON HYPER X 2GB DDR3 1600 CL9 DIMM
    MSI 790FX-GD70 MOTHERBOARD
    RADEON HD3870 512MB GPU
    RAPTOR HDD 150GB
    CORSAIR HX620W PSU

Ok back again..lol. After changing a few bits of hardware that i could (graphics card, hdd) (Just thought i would try everything possible before rma'n the ram) I was still plauged by the rebooting, but... i was faced with a
" hypertransport sync flood error" at boot. Which threw me rite of course, now after doing a bit of google'n i found a few people have had this problem with certain msi and asus boards. But what does this mean is wrong, does it still indicate a ram issue or is it now a bios/mb issue? Im so close to rma'n the whole lot and going back to my old rig (at least it worked) I will only rma the ram if i am 100% sure it will fix my problem, no point in wasting money if it wont solve anything.

  • How to set 1600 timmings on MSI 790FX-GD70

This is how and these are the settings that I use to achieve stable 1600 timings on my OZC Black Edition Ram using the MSI 790FX-GD70 board.
    OCZ AMD Black Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) OCZ3BE1600C8LV4GK timmings CL 8 8-8-8-24 1.65volts
Restart computer, Boot into BIOS by pressing "delete" until you see the screen say it is going into the bios. When changing settings in bios use the plus and minus key to make changes.
Select Cell Menu, this is the memory menu where you will adjust most of the timings for your memory
    Go into Advanced Dram
Set the following timings settings for your RAM When selecting both you have to scroll down the page and set the same timings for the other dimm. So you are setting one set for one RAM and one for the other.
In the picture I have it set for 2T but I use 1T, 1T is faster but I am showing you the default spec settings of the ram, once complete hit esc and back to the cell menu
    continued

I would like to point out that I have my CPU overclocked so that is why I have turned the cool n quiet off. You will also note that some of my numbers are not set at 2400 and that they are a little bit above what I have wrote. This is caused by me trying to get a little more out of my CPU overclock. These settings and multipliers interact with each other so if I set a multiplier at 12 and it shows 2400 but then go and set the FSB frequency a little higher the timing will reflect in the HT link. One note, you can not have your CPU-NB Freq lower then your HT Freq. Just wanted to explain that so you know why my numbers are not exact or a little different from the settings I am showing
Do not replicate my settings for the CPU as they are all different for all systems. I am only showing you the memory settings that you can set from the OCZ 1600 settings that they recommend.
Press escape and hit F10 to save your settings and the computer should post with the timings that we set.
Once you are stable you can then go in and try different settings of your own. Most people will try tighter timings which could relate to 7-8-8-8 or 7-7-8-8 etc. You can experiment once you are stable with the stock 1600 settings.
Your bios should have a User settings section and you can save your settings in their so if you are experimenting and you have to re-boot you can easily load the saved settings that we have done here!
If you mess things us and have to reset the cmos you unplug the maching, wait at least 1 minute and then press the cmos button. Plug machine back in turn power supply back on and the computer will tell you it has an error and to press F1. Press F1 and set the clock, then go into user settings and load the settings that we did here. If at anytime you want the original settings go into bios and select optimised settings and it will load the best settings that it uses to operate. Note that your overclocks and your ram will go back to default settings and any bios settings that you did manually will be gone until you reload them in user settings. If you update your boos, user settings are lost and you would manually have to set the timings again like we did here.
Many ways to go about this and this is the way that I use. I am not saying it is the only way or the best but it does work. I am using stock volts on the CPU and recommended volts for the memory and to raise the NB Freq. Constructive comments are very welcome.

  • How many ATA drives can I install in an MSI 790FX-GD70 AM3 motherboard?

I have a MSI 790FX-GD70 AM3 motherboard ordered with an AMD Phenom II X4 965 processor to upgrade my current machine.
In my current machine I have two ATA drives.  Will I be able to install both of those ATA drives on that MSI 790FX-GD70 AM3 motherboard or will it accept only one?
I plan on replacing one of the ATA drives with a SATA drive later, but I'd like to hold off until after Christmas.  If not, I'll just have to get by with one drive for a while.
    Thanks

You can always add a ATA controller card to extend it.
    How much do you need?
    BTW, ATA = Serial-ATA or Parallel-ATA = ATA
There is no such thing as an ATA but or and (E)IDE bus.
Many use the wrong naming including MSI.
OK.  Now if I understood Hans correctly, the board has one PATA-connector. To that, I can connect 2 PATA-devices.
Now here is a picture of my device manager:
Can I connect those two Western Digital drives to the PATA connector?
Bear with me.  I'm trying to figure this out.

  • Network problems with MSI 790FX-GD70

    Hi All
I have a problem with the onboard network cards.
It only works the first time from cold boot (when the powercable is completly disconnected from the PC, and LAN cable disconnected, turn on PC and then connect LAN cable)
If I shut it it down or restart the computer, then the LAN card disconnects, eg no lights active on either the pc nor the router. But if I do the procedure described above everything works ok again.
Same problem occours with both LAN ports.
    My system:

    2x Samsung t166 320GB HD

If the LAN-card is disconnected I wonder if the LAN-card is "present" at all. Check Deceive Manager. Please give some PSU info. Problematic booting and falling out devices...
Also, please, what is your BIOS Version?  Make sure its 1.4 .
Drivers - have you downloaded the latest ones from MSI's site and installed them for the LAN card?
Man.. is it me, or have there been like 6-7 people coming up with similar LAN issues on this board?  I've never known an onboard NIC to have issues.

  • MSI 790FX-GD70 Overclocking Major Issue

Hi guys, I recently purchased the AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition and the MSI 790FX-GD70 motherboard. My current bios version is the v1.1, and it came together with the motherboard.
In Windows, I am easily able to go to from 3.2Ghz to 3.8Ghz by increasing the stock voltage to 1.43V and the multiplier to 18 - 18.5. This is using AMD Overdrive. Stablity tests show everything is good.
After starting windows and implementing these settings into the bios, I realised that whenever I changed the multiplier in the BIOS, (CPU Ratio), the bios ceases to load after restarting, and my monitor shows a 'No Signal' message, which I am guessing that the bios does not even load. I have no problems changing the CPU Voltage or the BUS Speed, but whenever I touch the CPU Ratio, this problem persists.
I believe the default multiplier is 16x. Even when I keep it at 16x, it still gives me this problem.
What is the issue here? Do I require a bios update?

Fish it out, do not use Live Update

  • Are the versions of BIOS from MSI 790FX-GD70 compatible with GD70 Winki Edition?

I want to update BIOS because a problem with freezing up of the system remains the same. But for Winki Edition updates kept indoors April 2009, while for original GD70 there were already 5 (!) new versions of updates. Is BIOS compatible from original GD70 with my Winki Edition? Thanks for answers.

As you look at the Bios versoins remember that because there have been addl versions it doesn't mean you need it. Newer Bios's will only make a difference in the areas that adjustments were made. ie: an upgrade for CPU compatability for example. If everything is fine and running don't upgrade your Bios because you noticed a new one unless you need it. On the other hand upgrading to a 'Released' newer version might not hurt either, but when it comes to 'Beta" versions you enter the 'Beta' world of unsanctioned (MSI Released) versions that are for test/adjust purposes before release.
I don't have the 'Winki' edition and spoke to MSI Tech Support about adding Winki. (not going to do it after all) but for me it requires adding the Winki through USB board connection to add, you need to remove the Winki attachment to use the nonWinki Bios editions. If you think the other board version Bios's will enhanch you top OC capability I do not know if an advantage exists? OC is a single capability on all equally built PC's that get different results. You might want to do the reverse of what I asked MSI Tech and learn if it is worth it. Do you like the Winki part? If yes, changing will loose it. The gain can't be huge, enjoy your board with Winki, you'll probialy be happier in the long run.

  • MSI 790FX GD-70 freeze, FF

    Hello
I have recently bought a new system including a 790fx gd-70, which is crashing on me during gaming.
It constantly froze every time I started a game engine. Then I reinstalled drivers and updated some which apparently helped I thought.
After a couple of days now without the crash and games running nice and smooth, I am having them again.
    Here is what happens:
In games sometimes the screen freezes, resulting in rebooting as my only option. After then it wont
really boot, and the LED on the mobo reads FF, which apparently indicates some cpu/ram error. Also 3 red leds on the
    graphic card lights up.
Then I will have to close down, click off power – then after boot with no problems.
Im a beginner when it comes to hardware and such, but downloaded CPU-Z, amd overdrive and furmark etc.
to test the system but cant find the problem. Perhaps cause I dont really know what to look for:(
So, I was hoping that I could get some assistance in pinpointing my problem
    A few screenshots:

    http://i430.photobucket.com/albums/qq27/photoelwe/cpumemory.gif
    Does this look ok?

Sorry, but I have to ask you to be more specific here, cause Im pretty nervous about this clocking in Bios.
    Few questions:
First i need to go to advance DRAM configuration - then DRAM timing mode right? - Now, theres 4 options before i can go and set timings manually.
    - i can chose between (auto), "dct0", "dct1", "both". What should i chose here? Also there is a long list of setting i can change when i chose one of these options.
But, you only want me to change CL(cas latency) to 8, the two settings under to 8 aswell, and the fourth as 24? (8 - 8 - 8 - 24) ?
And dont change anything else in the long list below? (except voltage and 2t ofcourse)

Simple question, why don't you install Windows raid instead of AMD raid?
The result will be the same but you will be controller independent.
As you are doing mirror, software (Windows) raid can actually be faster.
Also, why aren't you doing RAID5 with all those disks?
It's faster and on top more secure.
    Thanks
I thought it is supported on HW so I can implement that. I will try to that in Windows.
