MSI 7950 twin fozr has no voltage control

Is this card supposed to have voltage control for the memory?
I can change the core voltage fine. Gpuz and afterburner graphs shows the correct core voltage. But when I change the memory voltage sliders and hit apply, gpuz and the afterburner graphs don't change from default 1.6
I think this card is supposed to have memory voltage control because the vrm model number allows it and afterburner is showing me the memory voltage sliders.
But I can't get it to work. Any help?

Interesting.
The reference 7950 and 7970 boards using the chl 8228 voltage controller do have memory voltage control.
The 7950 card I bought uses the 7970 ref board design with chl 8228 controller.
So the card does or should have the capability based on the hardware. But if you disabled it on the software side to differentiate your product line, that is fair and I can live with that.
But if you are saying the hardware does not support it, then I think something is not right.

  • MSI 7950 Twin Frozr HDMI output to TV help needed

Hi, i got an MSI 7950 Twin Frozr last week and it works great. However, i'd like to be able to extend my display to my TV with HDMI cable (brand new and works when plugged to monitor).
It seems i get no signal. In ccc (or Device Manager), my TV doesn't appear.
I have got it working a while back with a GT8800.
Could this be due to unsupported res? frequency?
    Any help appreciated!
    Cheers

if it isn't showing up in CCC or windows display manager then either your tv isnt giving a connection signal or the cable your using has a broken cable inside that the monitor doesn't use but the TV doe's
first get a new hi quality HDMI cable from a good maker like JVC to rule out that the Cable isn't defective (it may be new but it could still be broken as it happens)!
also what brand and model is the TV? (if its an LG there prone to having problems sending a signal of what it is to a graphics card)
also try to clean the hdmi port on the TV as it may have something contaminating the connection!

  • MSI 785GTM-E45 BIOS CPU fan voltage control

    Hello MSI gurus,
I've replaced the MB in an older HP media center with the MSI 785GTM-E45 running BIOS V8.8 out of the box.
    CPU = Athlon 64 X2 4200+
My problem is the stock CPU fan has a 3 pin connection (voltage controlled) and is running at 100% speed all the time.  From what I've read on the forums there are a number of people that have this issue (with other MBs with 4 pin cpu fan headers) and don't want to switch to a 4 pin CPU fan (PWM controlled).  I am in the same situation.
I am hoping that there is a BIOS for this board that has an option to switch to or enable voltage control on the CPU fan header.
I have tried enabling the CPU smart fan target but no matter what settings I chose the fan remains at 100%.  The H/W monitor of the MB indicates a CPU temperature (33C) well below the target (tried all options from 40C to 60C in 5C increments).
I have tried MSI's dual core center and it had no effect on the fan speed.
I have tried the 3rd party freeware SpeedFan and if had no effect on the fan speed.
I am not able to check if I have the latest BIOS or even find changelogs for existing BIOS verions because MSI seems to only direct BIOS downloads for this product to the Live update application.  I have installed the live update program and it indicated V8.8 was the most recent veriosn of the BIOS for this board, although I have seen posts indicating the Live Update application is not to be trusted.
Dual core center, SpeedFan, and Live Update have all now been uninstalled.
I know the fan I'm using will change speed because I can connect a 3 pin fan controller and manually dial down the speed.
I know the BIOS can read the fan speed becase it correctly shows the RPM changes when I use the hardware fan controller.
Can anyone direct me to a BIOS version for this board (or some secret keystroke) that enables automated 3 pin voltage control on the CPU fan header?
Thanks in advance for your time.

For those who are interested I received the following answer from MSI technical support.  Personally I find this to be a flaw in this board's design.  I chose this MB to replace a dead MB in a HP media center for a friend.  If I was buying this board for myself I likely would be using it as a HTPC because of the mATX form factor, HDMI on board, and backward compatibility for CPUs.  However, due to the added cost of purchasing a new heat sink and fan I would be RMAing if I had bought it for myself.  Considering many of the top performing after market coolers still come with a 3 pin fan it was a poor decision for MSI to not include support for automatic speed control of a 3 pin voltage controlled fan.

    Dear Sir/Madam,
Thanks for contacting msi technical support team!
We are sorry that because of the circuit designs,we could not add cpu smart function for 3 pin's connector fan in the BIOS. The difference between 3pins and 4pins is that the second has a temperature controller but the first does not.We would suggest you utilize a 4-pin CPU Fan in order to control the CPU Fan speed.
Sorry for any inconvenience caused you!

  • MSI 7950 Twin Frozr 3 3GD non o/c vs boost v2?

I really want to buy a new MSI card but I'm confused because of different SKUs. I can buy the non overclocked card for the same price as the v2 boost from a local computer store. Or online with the chance of getting a different SKU than ordered  . Can someone please tell me if the non o/c card will perform and overclock as good compared to the boost v2.

Nobody can tell you. Oc depends on the individual sample. Could be some non oc model reaches better oc results than an oc model or vice versa. Only thing you can be sure of are the factory clocks. Of course a card with boost (= auto oc) will be faster than a card without and same base clockrate.
Also I can't find a non oc boost card. V2 doesn't feature boost. The only 7950 with boost seems to be R7950 TF 3GD5/OC BE.

  • How to determine different versions 7950 Twin Frozr?

    Hi all,
I have got myself an MSI 7950 Twin Frozr and I am really happy with it thus far. I had a question though, in time I want to get a second one for crossfire and I read that there are different versions. A OC version, a BE version, a V2, with a 7950 board, a 7970 board etc. How can I determine which one I got so my second card will be the same?
    Many thanks in advance!

I have got the 7950 OC Boost edition, apparently on a 7970 board (it has a 6 pin and 8 pin connector). Do all the OC BE editions have a 7970 board, and if not, would it be a problem if I pare the 7970 one with one with a 7950 board?

  • MSI Afterburner - MSI 7850 Voltage Control

When will afterburner support voltage control for this card? We're able to unlock voltage control in options but still not able to change the voltage control in afterburner. Other mis 7970 cards can use it fine, not this msi 7850 though.

    Hi again
I have been doing some further testing today, using the AMD Catalyst drivers v12.8 and MSI Afterburner v2.2.3.
THE MSI R7850 Power Edition 2GD5 card appears to have two GPU core VDDC voltage states as standard, 0.82v for 2D clocks and 1.21v for 3D clocks.
I have confirmed this using GPU-Z v0.6.4 (managed to get it to display current VDDC correctly at last) and AIDA64. For some reason , Afterburner lets it appear that you are changing the VDDC voltage (once the unlock voltage options are ticked in settings).  Afterburner shows a core default VDDC of 1075mv when first installed which doesn't tally with what is actually the current 3D clock VDDC voltage of 1.21v. Even sliding this to 1.1v or 1.3v (the maximum) has no effect on the VDDC or 1.21v. The Afterburner OSD will always display what the voltage is set to on its own slider,  even if sensor output still shows the actual 1.21v.
Now, this is where it gets interesting. I installed the Sapphire Trixx application which as you probably know, is similar to Afterburner. Right at the start, it was displaying the adjustable core VDDC voltage as 1.21v although the slider would only let me decrease the voltage. I believe that this is due to Trixx having  a VDDC limit of 1.18v.  To test Trixx, I reduced the core VDDC to 1.1v. This core voltage adjustment was successfully reflected in MSI Kombustor, AIDA 64, GPU-Z when running 3D..
Strangely, this means that the Trixx application will let me adjust the volatge on MSI Power Edition  GPU core, albeit only to down volt from 1.21v where as the MSI Afterburner app does not adjust  the core voltage at all, despite the fact  that on the surface, it appears to work, letting you select core voltage 0.82v all the way to 1.3v. The 7850 states that it is triple overvoltage enchanced but Afterburner will not bypass the hard coded MSI BIOS voltages.

  • What is voltage control mode in MSI Afterburner?

Hi, I have a reference GTX 970 and am wondering what the difference voltage control modes are in my afterburner settings.I have the option between reference design, standard msi. and extended msi.
Which should I use, and what's the difference between them?
    Cheers,
    Ben

Standard msi is for normal msi graphic card and Extended msi is for like msi Lightning kind of cards. Extended mode sometimes opens up some settings just for those cards. But basically they are the same.

  • MSI Radeon HD 7950 Twin Frozr V2/OC BIOS update

Have there been any BIOS updates compatible with my card? Perhaps adding Boost or (more importantly) Windows 8 UEFI features, or bug fixes? My BIOS is dated 2012-05-24, and I very much suspect there have been updates with Win8 features since that date. My card is the MSI Radeon HD 7950 Twin Frozr V2/OC, which I believe is the second revision of the MSI Twin Frozr HD 7950 line, before the Boost editions. It is, I believe, the only model in the line which used an HD 7970 pcb instead of an HD 7950 pcb. I would appreciate the latest BIOS, and if it wouldn't be too much trouble, a changelog?
My BIOS, which I have captured using GPU-Z, can be found here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/jeq0pt
    S/N: 602-V277-05SB1205142483
Also, if I do choose to flash, which position should my dual BIOS switch be set to?
    Thanks very much.
Edit: Wow, got my serial number completely wrong the first time.

I have a UEFI GOP (Windows 8 Feature) vbios for you (attached):
Decompress the attached .rar archive with Winrar: http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
Create a bootable usb stick (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165175.0).
Then unpack the previously provided archive (200.rar) and put the included file (TV277MH.200) on that stick.
Rename TV277MH.200 to 200.rom. Put the atiflash.exe also included in the archive provided on the USB stick too. Now boot from the stick.
Type atiflash -p -f -noaper 0 200.rom [ENTER] and let it flash the vbios.

  • MSI Z97 XPower AC - 4 pin fan headers - PWM or voltage control?

The instruction manual states that the 2 CPU 4-pin fan headers are PWM control rather then voltage control.  The rest of the 4-pin fan headers say "NC" on the fourth pin.  Does this mean that the fourth pin has "No connection" and that they use voltage control of the fan's RPM? If so, this seems like a big oversight not to have PWM control on all the fans like another well known motherboard manufacturer.
My second question is...  does this motherboard control the fan speed by using variable resistance to the fan headers or produce variable voltage?  The following FAQ copied from Noctua's website states that there is a difference and the fans may not operate properly if used with resistance based fan control rather then the MB actually producing variable voltage.
Can Noctua industrialPPC fans be used with fan controllers and resistor cables (Low-Noise Adaptors)?
Noctua recommends not to use industrialPPC fans with common PC fan controllers, resistor cables (Low-Noise Adaptors) or other devices such as potentiometers that work by applying (variable) resistance rather than actually generating different voltages such as a laboratory power supply does. Due to the higher internal resistance of the industrialPPC fans’ three phase motor, applying additional resistance will cause the fans not to start (e.g. with Low-Noise Adaptors) or to have high starting speeds (e.g. with most common PC fan controllers). Please note that the industrialPPC fans feature starting voltages between 5.5V and 6V and can be run at these voltages on devices such as laboratory power supplies or mainboard fan controllers which actually generate lower voltages rather than applying resistance. Noctua thus recommends to use either PWM or voltage based mainboard fan control or laboratory/industrial power supplies for controlling the speed of industrialPPC fans.

Indeed only CPUfan 1 + 2 are PWM controlled according to the manual. Also yes, NC means not connected on the other headers what is why speed control is shown among the three pins left. That of course means that voltage control is used for these headers.
Controlling speed with resistor between power (12v) and fan is an aftermarket solution while on mainboards the voltage applied to the header is already of the voltage needed for control (generating lower voltages than 12v). So also in case of your board the lower voltage is generated and not lowered later on.

  • MSI G31TM-P35 voltage control?

Hi, I'm wondering how do you up the voltage of anything on this motherboard? I thought this motherboard came with voltage control built in but I guess I was wrong. I'm trying to achieve a stable overclock with this board.

So is there a way I can shoestring voltage control from another BIOS for another motherboard with a similar chipset into a BIOS for this motherboard?
Unless you are an experienced BIOS modder with expert skills in handling assembler code the answer is likely to be "no".

  • MSI GTX 770 OC Gaming - Voltage control???

I have just bought the video card and I have overclocked it as far as it will go STABLE. Though if I go 1MHz core clock above stable it crashes. Fair enough. Using MSI Afterburner, I set the 12+mV and increased it by the 1MHz, and it still crashes. Furthermore, none of the software I have detects the supposed 1.212V anyway, and I have proved that it doesn't even take effect at all.
I have seen other MSI cards that read the extra voltage, yet mine does not. What is happening?

1.212v is the maximum voltage of the gpu. It requires load and ramping the voltage slider to maximum to see that voltage. For monitoring use MSI Afterburner's OSD. >>How to use MSI Afterburner<<

  • 270X voltage control, AB 3.0.0 b18

    Hello,
I have a brand new R9 270x Hawk running catalyst 13.12 and the newest Afterburner 3.0.0 Beta18. The Hawk claims to have triple voltage control, but I cannot seem to get Afterburner to give me the option to adjust the voltages even with voltage controls set to unlock.
Does the card need a bios update, or is there some other way to unlock the voltage controls on the 270x?

I guess no one has any insight into this topic.
In the mean time, is it possible that there is a new UEFI/GOP bios for this card?
    It is R9 270X Hawk (912-V303-004)
Display device       : MSI R270X HAWK on Curacao GPU
    Display driver       : 9.14.10.01001, Catalyst 13.12
    On-board memory      : 3840MB
    BIOS                 : 015.041.000.000 (.002887)
    GUID                 : VEN_1002&DEV_6810&SUBSYS_30331462&REV_00&BUS_1&DEV_0&FN_0
the bios rom is "150118.rom" dated 10/07/2013.
I have full access to the voltage control for the MSI R7870 TF/OC that is in crossfire with the Hawk. *The Hawk is the master card.
I'm also confused as to why the 270X is reaching 80C+ under gaming load at stock voltage/frequencies, while the 7870 with voltage cranked up to 1.256 and frequencies at 1220/1400 only reaches 56C under the same load. I thought the two cards were based on the same design, and if anything, the 270X would run cooler with the Twin Frozr IV cooler and added heat plate???
^ The reason I ask about the heat level is that the many reviews of the card I read before I purchased it had it maxing out at 60-65C under gaming load, similar to the 7870 TFIII/OC. I wonder if the fan controller on the card is not working properly.
