MSI 7970 Lightning BE problem

Hello,
yesterday I received my MSI Ligthning, mounted it into my PC, boot and everything was fine...
I did some runs of Unigine Valley Benchmark, 3DMark Fire Strike benchmark, played a little bit to check if everything is fine and yes everything was fine...(by the way no more than 60c heat for the GPU).
But
after 2 hours, I was using Internet Explorer and suddenly my PC crashed with a kind of weird green screen... it was not possible to do anything, I had to reboot.
Unfortunately when I rebooted I saw some weird red dots in the displayed texts during the boot process... so I went into my mobo bios screen and saw here several red dotted lines accross the screen..
Anyway I tried to boot Windows with no success: after the splash screen I was not able to get the login screen... only a black screen...
I tried to dismount and mount again the card with no success.
I have the feeling my card is dead
By the way I tried to boot using the LN2 bios with no success (3 beeps).
My system is:
PSU Seasonic X650 (54amp +12v rail)
Mobo Asus P7P55D-E PRO
CPU i7 860 - 3.6GHz
8GB DDR3 GSkill
Windows 7 - x64
Crucial SSD M4 - 256GB
Raid 0 Seagate HDD 7200.14 - 3TB
Thanks if you have any idea to suggest before I RMA my card
Note: I put back my previous graphic cards and everything is fine... so no problem with the mobo or something else I guess.

test the card in another PC

  • MSI 7970 Lightning GHz Edition, black screen problem

    Hi all,
I am very dissapointed on the MSI product now. I bought MSI 7970 Lightning BE GHz Edition, when I don't overclock the graphics card and play games I will get black screen or sometime I will get message that "AMD graphics card stopped responding". So I bought a 950W PSU but still problem is there. If I underclocked the card at 600MHz both GPU and memory clock I don't get the problem. But what's the point of having this card paid $500 for nothing. I am so fed up with this card. Please someone help....
    My System Spc :
    Asus P8Z77-V LX motherboard
    16GB RAM
    Core i7 3770
PC Power and cooling MKII 950W PSU
    Thanks.

watch the attitude! you have got a faulty card it happens occasionally as all manufacturers have a 1-3% defective rate not just MSI so do not start with your bashing as its against the rules here!
there are hundreds of individual parts on a board and any one can go bad causing a problem so if you are going to bash anyone bash AMD's GPU's as that is the most likely problem here on the card and MSI do not make those so keep your "I learned a lesson about MSI... it's a piece of junk" to yourself  !

Hello guys, my friend has a very strange problem.

on 1 bios, the ln2 it runs on 1150, on the other 1 it runs at 1050 he has the shaders of a 7950, but it is the 7970 lightning.
no he whants to flash it, but what are the exact commands to use when he is in dos.
please do not say return it to the shop, because it takes 8 weeks to get a card back, and the shop says oke flash it, but HOW

    Use the attached
Decompress the provided .rar archive with Winrar: http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
TV278MH.170 is normal vbios and TV278MH.180 is LN2.
Create a bootable usb stick (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165175.0).
Then unpack the previously provided archive (170_180.rar) and put the included file (TV278MH.170 or TV278MH.180) on that stick.
Rename TV278MH.170 / TV278MH.180 to 170.rom / 180.rom. Put the atiflash.exe also included in the archive on the USB stick too. Now boot from the stick.
Type atiflash -p -f -noaper 0 170.rom (or 180.rom) [ENTER] and let it flash the vbios.
If still no help remove current drivers in safemode using >>Driver Fusion<< and install latest AMD drivers after reboot.
oke we tried it, we used the 180, now the core clock says 1050 no succes

  • Msi 7970 lightning BE artifacts & weird stuff

    Hi,
I'm having a lot of trouble with my msi 7970 lightning. Since a few months ago it started showing weird artifacts. I've mede a few video but ''I'm not allowed to post external links'', or at least so say the board.
The card it's stock speed (core and memory), the fans profile it's also at stock. I'm using the last Omega 14.12 driver and I've tried all the amd drivers from the last year. My cpu is an i7 3770 and my pc has 8 gb of ram.
    The card serial number is:
    S/N: 602-V278-040B1306042942
Now cames the pain. I had to stop playing Diablo 3 bacause some weird artifacts, then I quit playing Guild Wars 2 for the same reason (see the first video) and now I had to stop playing Dragon Age Origin because of the artifacts, which comes out at high to ultra setting (manageable by the card), and because the game keep crashing randomly to desktop (directX Error) or even freezing (Application Hang, ID 1001 Error). I have seen also weird artifacts on Watch Dogs and Battlefield 3 but fortunately I didn't like those game so much...
What should I do? I have even tried a clean win 8.1 installation...I'm really discouraged.
This card has still six more month of warranty, should I return to the shop?
    Thanks in advance,
    roz

    UPDATE:
B2 error solved. I tried the second bios on my msi z77 mpower motherboard and it wasn't update to the last release, so it was incompatible with amd 7970 card. Now I've update it the video card regularly boot.
Reading online i found that a possible explanation of the artifacts on 7970 cards is due to Hynix GDDR5 video memory ( H5GQ2H24MFR-R0C) voltages which are pushed too by manufacturers. So some people solved the issue reducing the memory voltages (see youtube) and clock speed.
Msi kept them under hynix scpecification, that's to say 6000 Mhz at 1.6 mV, maybe could be a defective module. I mean this card was build for overcloking so it seems weird to see these artifacts when the card is in full load and reaches 75-80 °C. In fact I've no issue, at least for now, with Crysis 3 at high details because the card never hit 70 °C.

  • 7970 lightning - displayport problem

I am attempting to hook the 7970 Lightning up to three NEC ex231w displays, with two mini DP to DP cables and one DP to DP cable with a mini DP adapter.  When I use just Displayport cables, I get no picture on any of the displays.  I am assuming Windows is booting (though I'm not sure), but I get something like "displayport not detected" on all three displays and then no picture.
However, when I use a DVI cable as one of the connections (along with two DP connections), I am able to get into Windows as usual, including setting up Eyefinity.
Is there something I need to enable in order to be able to use just Displayport connections?
    Other details:
    Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
    AMD 12.3 CCC drivers

  • 7970 Lightning BE Problem

So i may have celebrated a little to early hmm ..
I just received my 7970 Lightning BE .. PC turns on fine, can play video, ran a few bench marks ( sometimes ) .. but with a bench like fur mark, pc just shuts itself off .. I started with one power cable thats splits into two 8pins .. thought maybe there is 2 much for the one port on the psu to handle .. then tried 2 separate cables each coming from their own port .. pc still shuts down with to much stress .. i have also tried both bio's on the gpu .. I am either guessing its a problem with the card, or with the psu, though the psu did work perfectly with a 6870 .. Hoping someone can help ..
https://www.dropbox.com/s/gs291rq9d8ncefx/bios%27s%20BE.rom .. Thats the current bio's if that helps .. maybe it needs an update ?
     I have also uninstalled/reinstalled all software like catalyst/afterburner .
Any insight/thought as to whats causing the PC to shutdown would be delightful .. i checked to see if the motherboard posts an error code unfortunately it doesnt.
This here is the PSU i have http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Huntkey-X7-900-W-Power-Supply-Review/1446
Rest of the specs are in sig ( besides the 6870 havnt changed yet )
    Many thanks

  • MSI 7970 Lightning...display problems

I just got today the Lightning 7970.  I have tried two of the displayports and they work, but when I switch to one of the other two displayports...the computer doesn't even post.  So to recap...of the 4 displayports, 2 do fine and 2 don't even post on reboot.
Is it that you only get two of the 4 displayports for booting...and the other 2 are used when in windows?
    My computer is running
    Windows 8 64bit
    Latest 12.11 drivers
    6gb of ram
    I7 920 intel cpu

not sure, can you check if they will work within windows?

No it will not, it will void warranty only if you broke something during procedure.
And who's to say I wouldn't accidentally break something? What kind of grease would you put on? I have some Arctic Cooling MX-2 available.

It's not bios problem, i've able to test the same card with the same VBIOS , and there was no any problems.

  • Bios msi 7970 lightning BE

Hi, I've some problem with the new videogame Titanfall and the developer's forum the mods said it could be a bios issue.  I dont believe it but I'm going to try.
The serial numeber of my card is:
    S/N: 602 - v278 - 040B1306042942
The current BIOS is this (from GPU-Z):
    015.030.000.002.000000 (133-xxx-xxx)
Is this the last version for my model? Thanks!

you need to upload the vbios itself, save it with gpu-z,
then upload it somewhere and give a link to it to be checked

  • Problems with second 7970 Lightning Card?

    Hello
I purchased the MSI 7970 Lightning in May of last year as part of a new build.  The other components of the build that affect the running of the machine are:
    Asus P8Z77 WS Motherboard
    Intel i7 3770K CPU
    16GB Mushkin Ram (991991)
    Noctua NH-U12P SE2 Cooler
    Samsung 830 SSD x2
    Samsung Spinpoint F2 1TB HD
    Corsair AX850 PSU
    Windows 7 Home Premium
USB 3.0 PCIe card with 2 internal and 2 external sockets
    Sony CD Drive
With buying such high end products I thought I would have an easy hassle free build as I have built computers before with only one problem build that resulted from a faulty stick of memory.  I didn't intend to overclock at all initially and intended but wanted the option to if I needed to in the future.
How wrong was I?  The first Lightning card was faulty and would crash before it finished the Kombuster benchmark.  The system also suffered from continual 'AMD Driver has stopped responding and has recovered' stutters and occasional crashes even on the desktop.  I contacted the merchant I purchased it from and arranged a return.  It took a few weeks but I did eventually receive a replacement card through MSI.
Excuse the pun, but Lightning couldn't strike twice I thought, and the next card would work.  However, I still got the 'AMD Driver has stopped responding and has recovered' reports and the occasional crashes.  This card did at least complete the benchmark so I kept it and put it down to driver issues.
In my quest to resolve the issue I have tried the following:
I trawled the internet looking for probable causes and have tweaked the motherboard bios according to what was recommended on Asus forums to no avail.
I have downloaded the latest bios for the motherboard
I have used the most stable settings recommended in bios so as to cause least stress on a non-overclocked CPU
I have set up my SSD's in non-raid as I read Lucid Virtu MVP doesn't like that
I have done a fresh install of Windows 7 each time I downloaded new drivers for the graphics card so that there could be no old files affecting the driver's operation
I have used graphics drivers from the MSI site for the 7970 and also from AMD without success
I have run Memtest which came up with no errors.
I have also tried using just 8GB of the RAM in various configurations on the off-chance it was a faulty stick despite the Memtest result.
I don't have limitless hours to spend trying to rectify problems with my computer.  I tend to work on it when I take a holiday but, again, I can't continually take up all of my holiday time trying to sort this out.  Unfortunately many moons later I have still not got a stable computer that is usable (it is intended for my work primarily so i do need it to be stable.  I can't afford a crash in the middle of doing my work).
I'd like to get this rig working before the build becomes obsolete.  I have built several computers before but would not consider myself an expert so please don't get too technical with the jargon.
I would welcome any suggestions even if it is to arrange another RMA for the 7970.
    Thanks in advance
    Trevellion.

Ok, I did a fresh install.  At first I thought it had been the Lucid MVP software which was causing conflicts because the system appeared stable.  The computer would even recover from sleep mode (the stage where the fans stop) without mishap which had never been able to before.  Unfortunately, shortly afterwards I got the dreaded hang and the message 'AMD driver stopped responding and has recovered'.  It now seems to do this every time I switch the computer on now.  I just don't feel I can use this computer in it's current state for work as it's too unreliable.  Once the problems start they become much more frequent.
When I enter the Action Center, click 'Maintenance' and check under 'Review your computer's reliability and problem history', I can see multiple reports of 'Video Hardware Error'
Clicking on the report gives this message:
