MSI 865 PE NEO 2 (MS-6728 v.1) raid problems

Hello guys, hope somebody can help before i throw everything out of the window.
Hi had this mobo since 2003.
p4 2.66  800 fsb
memory pc 2700  333mhz
Ati radeon 256 mb
2 ide hds 120gb each on onboard promise as raid optimized for performance (raid0)
Everything start about a month ago.
suddenly Pc dont boot from array.( i think was a power cut)
after playing a bit around I went to fast build (ctrl -f ) delete the array and with option 1 auto detect the array again.
Pc booted and everything was fine, then messages like " windows no disk error" start to pop up everytime i boot up again.
I taught about malaware of some kind and even try to reassign a letter for hds that always appeared as "C".
then very frustrated I had the "brilliant" idea of using window restore point to restore windows some time before  I had this problem.
Then no more boot guys the man lost control of the machine.
i tried to use recovery consolle, when i go "chkdsk" says: disk appear to have 1 or more unrecoverable errrors.
MAP do  not shows the disks (maybe `cause raid?).
the funny thing is that on fastbuild (ctrl-f) a bootable array is present and "Functional",but when i do option 1 (array autoset up) says "no available disks".
I have tried to reinstall Promise pdc20378 driver(cannot find original floppy anymore so i have download driver) to reinstall windows XP(SP2),pressed F6 and then s messages says unexpected error on line bla bla bla.
It does not allow me to install a fresh copy of xp.
Do you think is the promise raid controller fault?
do I need to change/reinstall the driver(maybe i have downloaded the wrong 1).
There is not very important stuff on hds, just years of downloaded movies and songs, which i would like to keep if poss.
Any suggestions before I throw this superb mobo of the 2003 and get the new p35 chipset?
Is the machine finally beat the man?
I thank you all in advance
A sleepless man

Thanks HenryW,
I have create the dikette and done the test.
It did not recognize the disks on the onboard promise ata raid.....so i plug them on the normal ide
I ve done quick scan first and 1 of the disk came up with error 0x73 (defective device ..excessive shock),
then i ve performed advanced scan on the same disk and gave me a different error code 0x72 defective device ..S.M.A.R.T failure.
I guess 1 of the disk has gone, unless i can repair it somehow with this utilities,or disks have to be read 2gether on the raid controller..
Well i ll try to see on hitachi website, any more suggestions please let me know.
I thank you for the great help you are giving

  • MSI 865 PE neo 2 S compatibilty

    Dear Guys,
Please kindly help me to solve my problem with my old system.
I have an old system that I want to use as HTPC. The specs are:
     -MSI 865 PE NEO 2 S
     -1 Gb of RAM
-P4 2,66 Ghz Northwood with Hyper threading function enable.
     -320 GB of HDD.
     -HD 3650 AGP
     -FSP Bluestorm II 500 watt
     -Main board Bios v 2.5
The problem is, when I want to change the processor with P4 3,2 Ghz SL6WG (Northwood) 512kb /  FSB 800. My system wont boot at all.
    Based from:
    http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=543
The P4 3,2 Ghz Northwood CPU listed as a compatible CPU for my mainboard.
I have tried clear the CMOS by shorting the 2 pins, remove the CMOS battery in the mainboard and still no results so far.
When I see the LED bracket it show 4 red light.
I have tested my system with P4 3.0 E Ghz (Prescott) SL7E4 and show no problems. My system run fine.
Am I got a bad CPU (bad P4 3,2 Ghz Northwood) or maybe this CPU not compatible with my mainboard?
Thanks a lot for the response.

You mean when you press the power button, lights come on and fans start spinning, but there are no beeps and there is no display?
The CPU is compatible with that board, so if your system doesn't start with it in, then it must be a bad CPU.
Its definitely a SL6WG? (as shown on the CPU surface)
Yes the processor definitely SL6WG, I saw the code myself in the surface of the processor.
When I start my system with SL6WG installed, there are no beeps sound at all. However all the fan and my pc peripherals starting. My monitor only show the blank screen. with the led bracket in the back show 4 red light.
When I change back my processor to 2,66 Ghz Northwood or 3.0 E prescott my systems runs fine.
    thx

  • Neo Platinum XP install on RAID problems

Hi, this is my first post on these boards so I'm hoping someone will be able to help.
I'm building a new system using:
    Neo Platinum Mobo
    Twin WD Raptor SATA drives
    This is the problem:
I have installed the two Raptors on SATA ports 3 & 4 and enabled these in BIOS. I have also enabled 3 & 4 as RAID and set up a striped array. I have then proceeded to install Windows XP (standard, no service pack). Past the F6 driver setups without problem but then after a short while a blue screen appears saying that windows has encountered problems and is shutting down to avoid damaging the system. This message also mentions viruses or badly terminated drives.
I have tried several times but this window always appears.
I was able to install xp without problems on one of the SATA drives once I had disabled the RAID array but obviously I want to be able to make use of RAID.
I have checked and double checked all connections etc and all seems fine. getting desperate here and would really appreciate some guidence.

A couple of points to add to all that:
    1. How about the rest of the specs of your system, especially the PSU specs (max amps on each rail).
    2. Are they 74GBRaptors or 36GB? If 74GB you should slipstream SP1a or SP2 into your Win XP first because the combined capacity will be greater than the OS can recognise. There are lots of sites with instructions for this. My favourite is here (Nero 6 version).  You can also look at XPCREATE.
    3. The original XP did not support UDMA6 and I wonder if that may be another reason for your problems.  It shouldn't make any difference but then problems are often caused by things that shouldn't really matter.
I would certainly suggest you install from a CD with SP1 or SP2 slipstreamed.

  • 865 P neo 800 FSB issues?

I'm working on a system with an 865 P neo mobo, 2.4 P4 with 800 FSB.  The default is 166 on the FSB in the bios, and the chip only shows up as 1.99 ghz.  When I change the fsb to 200, it posts, and starts to load the win xp splash screen, then reboots.  Anyone else having similar issues? I've already tried different boards and cpus, so it's not a hardware issue.  Bios version is 1.1 042503.
Any thoughts ir similar problems, please post.

My guess is that MSI printed '800 series' on the box to show it's compatible with 800 FSB CPU's (which seem to work, only slower as intended).

  • MSI 865 Neo2 taken back? True or False?

Well frds, I've just got a news that MSI has stop their distributors to sell any MSI 865 Neo 2 mobos for a period due to some problems that cause conflicts for the mobo... May I know if this is true as I will be getting one soon... The features is so cool and advanced!
Please let me know of any outcome... Thanx   !!!
    All the Best... :D!!!

Sorry for that... I didn't see FIS2R... as I'm reading too briskly... My mistake, sorry again...
By the way, I would like to buy I865 FIS2R, but I think that this board will not be out in Singapore yet as they are pushing the I875 FIS2R currently, and these board are not cheap here... around $450 Singapore dollars or more... whereas I've got me NEO2 I865PE non-FIS2R for only $260 Sin dollars... Big difference...
Thanks to all again for a million times for your helping hands...

  • MSI-7043 (PT880 NEO-FSR) Boot Problem

I just installed this motherboard which I purchased on eBay from someone who swears it was working fine before.
I installed it in the following configuration:
    MSI-7043 PT880 NEO-FSR Motherboard (Rev. 2.0) with BIOS version 2.0
RaidMax Scorpio case with a 520-Watt RaidMax Power Supply (its older, but digital P/S tester says everything is OK)
2x1Gig SuperTalent DDR400 RAM <- Was working fine in Compaq PC
Intel P4 2.4Ghz Prescott CPU (FSB533) <- Was working fine in Compaq PC
ThermalTake TR2-M12 CPU cooler <- New
LG DVD-RW Lightscribe 22x IDE Drive <- New 2 weeks ago, was working fine in Compaq PC
Seagate 320 Gig IDE Drive <- 2 Monthes old, was working fine in Compaq PC
    (Drive is partitioned 1-250Gig Bootable & 1-70Gig)
Chaintech Nvidia FX5200 AGP Video Card <- Worked fine in Compaq PC
High quality round 80-pin IDE cables
No SATA drives installed at all
The system POST's fine and recognizes all installed drives, but only occasionally will boot to CD-ROM, and will never boot to hard disk, just sits there with a flashing cursor. When it did boot into CD-ROM, I was able to boot Linux and browse hard drive fine. Booted once into MEMTEST and it ran for hours fine with no errors.
I have tried defaulting BIOS several times, tried several configurations for boot sequence and using F11 Boot Menu. No matter what I do, booting from CD is hit and miss (1 out of 4 times will boot) and it will NEVER boot from the hard drive.
Interesting thing is if I disconnect the hard disk, it will boot to the CD-ROM EVERY time (sort of), but I do have to wait until it says no boot record found on CD or floppy, then press ENTER to try again it boots
After searching for through other posts, I have tried increasing the DDR RAM voltage to 2.6v with no change.
Any ideas??? is there a BIOS limitation to the boot partition size of the hard drive, if so why would this affect booting to the CD?

Ummm... never had that trouble before... It should at least start booting, or at least recognize the boot sector has a valid boot record.
Those are all valid ideas, and I appreciate the input.
BTW, I am not a newbie. I am a telecom, network, and computer technician with almost 20 years of experience. This is just the first time I have had a problem with MSI boards, I use them all the time and they generally work flawlessly. I understand operating system licensing, OEM versions, 32 vs 64 bit, and how to copy files from one drive to another using multiple different ways. I was just hoping that there was something simple going on that I was missing that someone would just say "Yeah, turn XXXXX feature off in the BIOS".
I put an older 48x CD-ROM drive and a Western Digital 40 Gig in it and it worked beautifully, in the middle of installing Kubuntu Linux right now.
I actually resized the boot partition down to 130 Gig with Linux Parted Magic and it booted OK.
I think I actually had two problems with the previous setup:
    1) Boot partition was too large for the BIOS, the entire partition should not exceed the 134 Gig boundry (different sites say anything from 130-138 Gig) for the BIOS on the motherboard according to some articles I googled.
    2) The LG DVD-RAM drive was just too slow spinning up for the bios to recognize the boot partition on the CD or DVD.
I resized the partition back up to 250 Gig and put the DVD-RAM, Hard Disk, Processor, RAM, and video card back into the Compaq, it is a fast (by standards of the day) and stable machine, I was just looking for a way to add some expansion capabilities for more PCI cards and possibly a SATA drive. Anyway put a 2.0 Ghz Celeron, 768 Meg of DDR266 RAM, a CD-RW drive, and a Matrox G450 Dual-Head 32 Meg AGP card I had laying around in place of of the old and will just delegate this to a Linux box.
So far all seems fine, think I will just hold off putting too much into this machine since I was planning on building a new one this summer after USB 3.0 came out.
    Thanks.

  • Kingmax Hardcore DDR500 with MSI MS K8N Neo Platinum (Bios Version 1.40)

    I am interested in Kingmax Hardcore DDR500 (PC4000) 512MB DDR-SDRAM. Currently, I’m using MSI MS K8N Neo Platinum (Bios Version 1.40) with AMD 64bit 2800+ & MSI MS 8907 FX5200-TD128 AGP Card.
Please advice whether the Kingmax Hardcore DDR500 (PC4000) 512MB DDR-SDRAM compatible with my systems.

The "safe mode" that the BIOS message refers to is not related to Windows' Safe Mode. The BIOS safe mode lets you un-do any overclocking or memory settings that might make your computer so unstable that you can't even get into the BIOS settings to change them. In that case, you hold insert while powering on to reset the BIOS to default safe values.
As for your problem getting into Windows' Safe Mode. If you upgraded from another motherboard that uses a different chipset, or if you somehow got the wrong chipset drivers installed, then the old AGP GART or chipset drivers will cause the system to halt/reboot very early in the Windows boot process even in safe mode. I've run into this problem before and its tricky. Best thing to do is switch back to the old motherboard, then go into safe mode and remove all chipset-related drivers, and then switch back to the new motherboard. If you can't do that, try running system repair from the windows setup CD. And failing that, you'd probably have to fully re-install the OS.

  • MSI 875 Pro Neo FIS2R - HDD-LED doesn`t work

    Hello,
yesterday I got my new MSI 875 Pro Neo FIS2R.
Installation of motherboard and Windows XP went without any problem. So I`m very satisfied with this Board.
But now I noticed, that the HDD-LED doesn`t show any activity.
Then I turned around the HDD-LED plug of the Case with again no success: The HDD-LED doesn`t shine...
    My (IDE-)storage-components are:
    Primary Master: NEC DVD-ROM
    Primary Slave: NEC DVD-RW
    2 x WD Raptor (SATA) as RAID0 (ICH5R)
Is there anything wrong ? What can I do ??

    Hello Maesus,
yes, I read your reply. But it didn`t answer my question, why HDD-LED don`t show any DVD-ROM activities (remember, DVD-ROM is IDE-primary master and DVD-RW is primary slave)...

I have had 1x Crucial Ballistix 512MB RAM for 2.5 months, for a total of two.
    I have had MSI GeForce 6600GT (NX6600GT-VTD) 128MB AGP for 1 month.
For about 1.5 to 2 weeks, I have been seeing random crashes while playing PC games.
I started a thread on the Hard OCP forums a few days ago.  I did not know MSI had forums =)
Rather than re-typing, I may as well just post the link:
    http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=934956
My issue is also similar to this one:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=83799.0
    Thanks for the help.

ALL RIGHT, after almost    FOUR    months my issue is FINALLY    resolved.
It is amazing how much time passes when you are hesitant to buy parts unless you are 95% sure it will fix the problem.
OK, here is an update as to what I remember.
I went to BIOS 1.4 and tried many different physical and BIOS RAM configurations (Different seating, different number of DIMMs, different RAM timings, voltages, etc).
I concluded that I could not make my PC 100% stable, but I could get it darn close.  With certain settings, such as DDR400, 2-2-2-6, 1T, 2.80V, Aggressive Timing enabled, Memtest failed test #5 every time (this is spec for my RAM).  With other settings, such as DDR333, 2.5-3-3-7, 2T, Auto V, Aggressive Timing enabled, Memtest failed test #5 maybe once out of 5000.
I also concluded that the RAM voltage and Aggressive Timing setting was having a big impact.  Some settings would not work (failed Memtest) with RAM at 2.80V but would work with RAM at Auto V.  Some settings would not work (failed Memtest) with Aggressive Timing enabled but would work with it disabled.
Finally, I started to occasionally get R,G,R,G (Processor Initialization) on the D-Bracket upon cold-start & warm-start, which suggests a PSU issue:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=76972.msg542545#msg542545
That pushed me over the top, and I decided to buy a new PSU (TG-480-U22) and a new SATA HDD (WD2500KS) just because.
Problem solved.  Thanks for all the help.
I will continue to buy MSI in the future just because of these forums…and a good product of course!
