MSI 870-G45 - something odd is going on with MSI

Ok, this is convoluted but bear with me.
I bought the MSI 870-G45 (MS-7599 v2.x) motherboard from Newegg. Newegg listed the chipset as the AMD 870. However, when I received the motherboard, the manual states that the chipset is actually the RX 780 (a.k.a. AMD 770 a chip from 2007/08!), I checked in CPU-Z and confirmed this. I built a rig with this motherboard on 8/15/2010.
I have been having all sorts of issues. These include memory errors when running memtest86+ or HCI memtest.
Today I come on to the MSI website to do some research on the motherboard and I see that the MSI 870-G45 is now listed as a "NEW" product and the chipset is now the AMD 870, as I originally thought. In fact, MSI has two versions of the 870-G45, depending on what link you visit. See the two links below:
http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=prodmbspec&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=&cat3_no=&prod_no=2070
http://us.msi.com/index.php?func=prodmbspec&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=171&cat3_no=&prod_no=2019#menu
The version I ended up with is the one in the first link.
Now, I have the AMD Athlon II X4 635. The product info page at AMD states that the voltages should be between .85v and 1.25v. ( http://products.amd.com/en-gb/DesktopCPUDetail.aspx?id=625 ) However, even though the BIOS of this motherboard (the version with the 770 chipset, which is the one I got) supports this CPU, the "Auto" CPU voltage setting sets the voltage at ~1.35v - above the specs specified by AMD! Wondering if this might also be a cause of the difficulties I am having, I lowered it to 1.12. Running some more tests to see if this has improved stability.
So, two versions of one motherboard, with confusing numbering and Auto voltage that exceeds the specs from the CPU manufacturer. What the heck is going on?
Another issue is that the manual states on page 2-6 (21 on the PDF) states that to be in dual channel mode, I need to put my two DIMM cards in the slots DIMM1 and DIMM2. However, further down the page under the heading "Important", it states:
In Dual-Channel mode, make sure that you install memory modules of the same type
and density in different channel DIMM slots.
This seems to be contradictory, but it is probably just me. Does it mean I install the two DIMMs in DIMM1 and DIMM2 or DIMM1 and DIMM3?

Thank you both for your input. I mistakenly thought this was run by MSI. Feel stupid. But since you were so kind to respond, I'll post my full system specs as you suggested:
AMD Athlon II X4 635 CPU
MSI 870-G45 AM3 Motherboard
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (F3-12800CL9D-4GBNQ)
GIGABYTE 1GB GeForce GTX 460
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM
ASUS DRW-24B1ST SATA 24X DVD Burner
OCZ ModXStream Pro OCZ600MXSP 600W ( +3.3V@25A, +5V@25A, +12V1@25A, +12V2@25A, [email protected], [email protected] )
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.
Also just discovered that there are two versions of my CPU (C2 and C3 revisions). Perhaps that is where some of the confusion regarding voltages lie. Again, feel stupid.
Issues in a nutshell:
Computer ran fine for about 10 days. Then booted up a game and got crazy artifacts everywhere. Windows 7 also showed some artifacts when I went back to desktop. OS never crashed though. Windows has never crashed. Because of this, I suspected that my GPU went bad. Ran OCCT GPU test, Furmark and ATI tool and have artifacts on all three. Artifacts appear immediately upon starting test, so I don't think it is temperature related. Temp of GPU is under 40 C idle and highest under load is 77 C, which falls in line with what I read in reviews for card.
Now, before RMAing by video card with Newegg, I decided to download memtest86+ and run it. Just a hunch. I got an error on the first pass in test 2. However, I continued to run the test and saw no more errors. Ran the test again overnight for hours and could not recreate error. Thinking I may have gotten a false positive, I ran HCI Memtest (this one runs in Windows) and ran it for a few hours. That reported multiple errors as well. Now I am trying to run the test with one DIMM at a time to see if I can isolate which stick it is.
So I guess my questions are:
* What are the chances that I got a bad GPU and bad RAM from Newegg? Anything is possible but I thought that getting two lemons was unlikely, and when I then saw the discrepancies in the motherboard info on MSIs website I started to wonder.
* Could bad DRAM have any effect on GPU - as in displaying artifacts. Or would this strictly be a GPU issue?
* A member at another forum warned against leaving voltage settings in BIOS at Auto. This is what led me to look up the specs at AMDs website. What do you think about this recommendation.
Sorry if I came off a little harsh, I thought I was addressing MSI the company and was a bit miffed by two different versions of a board and with the fact that newegg was improperly stating the specs.
I appreciate any help you can give.

Oh, dont you just love this error?
    Long story short;
New computer, Alls well, start gaming, crashes, "HTSF error".
System Idles and can take less graphically advance games just fine, but lasts 3 seconds in more graphically demanding games. Not the video card. I've Tested it in multiple computers already.
    Things I've tried;
    lowering the HT-Link frequency to 1800 (x8) and keeping NB-CPU at 2000
Disabled C'n'Q and other power saving utilities
    Increased memory voltage
A few people mentioned to disable HPET under power management, but i cant seem to find it =\
Tried updating the BIOS but SureHands Live Update didn't find anything, and I dont know where to DL the archive directly.
I was also told to increase CPU voltage as well, but thought I'd check here first and see what people in the know, know.
    Heres the numbers:
    CPU-Voltage -- 1.390
    CPU_NB-Voltage -- 1.265
    DRAM-voltage -- 1.750 (Up from 1.50)
    NB-Voltage -- 1.103
    SB-Voltage -- 1.196
    HT_Link-Voltage -- 1.240
    HT-Link frequency -- 1800
    NB-CPU frequency -- 2000
    Memory Timing 9-9-9-24
And last but not least, My system:
    System:
    MSI 870-G45 MoBo
    AMD Phenom x4 840 3.2Ghz
    G.Skill memory DDR3 SDRAM 1333 4Gb x2
500Watt corsair PSU (Was using a 400 watt case PSU before just fine)
    Nvidia 9500 GT 1Gb
    EDIT:
Could it be the memory? Just noticed that the sticks only supports AMD 790 Chipset while the Mobo is AMD 770 Chipset.

Try different brand memory and you know soon enough.
HT errors are hard to find and can be anything from: Memory, CPU, motherboard, videocard to bad powersupply.
Typical they are cause by Memory, videocard or powersupply.
As you are using Gskill, that would be my first to replace with El-Cheapo stick and see what happens.
    Even when memtest doesn't error.
I have no spare DDR3 sticks onhand and the stores around here carry the expensive kind only =\
note on the video card though, Noticed mine was missing 2 brass connector pins on the card itself. Looks like they broke off in the old mainboard i had. Pulled my brothers video card and im going to test that in a second.
Also, when I ended the stress test, boy was my system toasty.

MSI 870-G45 Motherboard - Can it fit two MSI GeForce GTX 550 Ti Cyclone II 1GB Cards?
I'm planning to buy a MSI 870-G45 ATX AM3 Motherboard and two MSI GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB Cards, in order to run multiple monitors.
However my concern is that the cards might not fit into the motherboard.
So could someone please tell me if those two cards will fit into the motherboard?

It means that an x16 PCI-E video card will only get x4 lanes instead of x16 when used in that slot.

  • MSI 870-G45 Checking NVRAM Hang

I just built a new computer, and it often hangs when restarting by doing one of two things.
    1. It hangs at "Checking NVRAM" right after the HDD's are detected.
    2. The motherboard beeps 4 times, and then says a BIOS update has been requested via USB. It does a little routine checking for a USB and then telling me I haven't inserted a USB 3 times before it automatically restarts the computer. Sometimes it'll beep 4 times again and do the same thing, sometimes it'll go into the "Checking NVRAM" error, and sometimes it'll boot fine.
Essentially, it's hit-or-miss if it'll hang or not on either of those. I'd say about 80% of the time it does.

ASUS Radeon HD 5450 Silent 1GB PCI-E Video Card
    2 x DVD drives

Here's what I've tried so far:
    1. Disconnect everything except memory & video card
    2. Boot motherboard out of the case
    3. Reset CMOS via the jumper and by removing the battery
    4. Flash BIOS with the newest version

  • Something weird is going on with Compressor 4 Version 185673

Something weird is going on with Compressor 4 (v185673).
I've just completed a 1.5hr edit in FCP X (v10.0.1) and chose to send it to compressor so I can encode my MPEG-2 files.
It takes approximately 5min for compressor to open and show the job to start with!
I then drag the MPEG-2 preset and click on it, the spinning ball comes up and takes approximately 10min before compressor reacts...!
Wondering if anyone else is having the same experiencing?

  • MSI Z87-G45 Updated bios to 1.3 with M-Flash without ME

So is this a problem ? should ME be updated as well ?
I went from the first bios to this one but only saw later on that is was suppose to be flashed with ME.
So should i re flash the bios ? if anyone can tell me that would be much appreciated.

Thanks. Nevertheless,  yesterday I was upgrading the bios to version 1.4 and bricked the board. BSOD during erasing flash and that's it. PC never boot again. Now sending to RMA. So be careful with flashing! This board does not have dual bios unfortunately :(
I had to RMA a brand new board the first month I had it because out of the box I could not update the board. When I called MSI support they a) had zero RMA stock available and b) were going to try to give me refurb until I threw a fit. I had purchased some upgrades and it was about two weeks before the build so I was unable to return to the seller for an exchange and directed to MSI.
After a couple weeks MSI ended up sending me a new retail board that had been "personally QC'd" by the tech I had dealt with on the phone. I was assured the board could now by flashed and sure enough this was the case. The upper heatsinks were physically "damaged" however, not functionally but aesthetically. They must have touched plastic to them while they were nice and warm because there's a gob of fused plastic/disfigured heatsink now.
I also now hang trying to update. So, I'm pretty much done with board, done with MSI.

  • MSI 870 g45 no post no display

Just got everything in from newegg. Everything is hooked up and connected properly. When I turn it on the lights come on and the fans spin. But I get no post and no display. I have narrowed it down to the powersupply. It has the 20+4 connector, the main rail for the mobo supports all 24 and it does what's stated above. But I noticed the 4 pin for the CPU power has no plug. So I plugged the 4 pin into the CPU power but I just get a flash when the power button is pushed.
    Any advice?

That 4 pin from the 20+4 does not go to CPU power. Your PSU has either a single 4 pin, 4+4 or 8 pin that can be separated into 4+4. They will have black and yellow wires only, no other color of wires on CPU power will be on them.
If you still have a prom after properly connecting all of the power cables then remove everything from the case and place on a non-conducting brown cardboard surface, connect everything up again and re-test. Motherboard, 1 memory module in DIMM 1, VGA with 6 pin power 1 or 2 or whatever your VGA has, HDD, ODD.

I'm using brass standoffs, I think one near each corner screwed in and one post-type near the center.
    Never think! Be 100% sure!
That your standoffs match the board holes, no more no less (those holes with tin circle around them).
Timings should be set on auto-settings. And certainly those aren't good as they are meant for Intel not AMD.

  • MSI 870-G45 - Can't get into BIOS

So, just built myself a new pc.
It posts, and I have some output on the screen upon boot up, like I see that its detecting my sata hd/dvd drive and everything. Like the topic name says, I can't get into the BIOS.  When it posts, its detecting my keyboard and everything, but it simply hangs at the post screen and I cannot get into the BIOS at all for whatever reason that is beyond me.  I've tried 2 keyboards, one ps/2 and a usb keyboard, nothing on either (the usb is one I went to wal-mart and got today as I guessed the ps/2 wasn't working correctly or whatever).
Tried clearing CMOS (taking out the battery, resetting the jumper and everything).  Still got nothing.
Heres a link to a pic of what output I do have. http://img858.imageshack.us/i/img20110313152042.jpg/ (sorry, don't know how to embed pics into a forum board, not that familiar)

I mean, I'm using a usb keyboard.  Should I try a PS/2?  I mean I've tried clearing the CMOS a handful of times to no avail, nothing.  It just simply hangs at that screen and says CMOS settings are wrong.
I thought you said you'd already tried a PS/2 keyboard and it still hangs?

  • Something wear is going on with my iPod

    Hello!
I didn't know where else to post, so I'm going to post it here.
Basicly problem is that I can't get my iPod running at all. The weard thing is that it's working now and than. Here is how things developed:
I was using it like regulary, until one day, all my music was gone. iPod wasn't responding at all, so I just kept it in a drawer. Couple of days ago I've tried to reconnect it to iTunes. Didn't work, not only iTunes, half of my computer frozen. When I disconnected it from USB cable, everything was working fine. I can't remember how, but somehow I formated it. Installed new iTunes and after 1 hour, it showed iPod connected. With formating, there wasn't anything on iPod, so I chose to update the system, setting things right on this thingie. After update, I had to plug it on adapter due to low battery.
Next day I connected it to comp and again needed app. 1 hour for iTunes to recognise it. I synced it and than tried to add some music to it. Added songs to library and started syncing. Somewhere at the middle it showed an error about song being read-only and than iTunes froze. Since than, my computer doesn't even recognise this iPod anymore.
Any suggestion what to do since I've tried everything and it seems to be futile. I doubt disc went to ****, otherwise it wouldn't be formating and updating.
    Thanks in advance.
    Flesh

Ok tried it again today: iTunes asked me to restore iPod. Tried it once, but it didn't work. So I formated it and than restored it with iTunes. After almost fully restoring it, iTunes asked me to connect it to other power source to finish the restoring process. When I do, folder icon with an exclamation point shows and doesn't do anything.

  • Something weird is going on with my iPhoto library!

Help! I tried to import a photo from my scanner and it didn't work. The only problem now is that each time I start up iPhoto I get a message...
"A photo has been found in the iPhoto Library that was not imported. Would you like to import it?"
Whether I choose Yes or No I get the following message...
"Unreadable files: 1. The following file could not be imported." It then puts the file in a iPhoto recovered photos folder in my shared area.
This on its own wouldn't be a problem (just a nuisance) but since then I have been unable to import photos from anywhere else into iPhoto. When I try I get a different message that says...
"Unreadable files: 6. The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data).
I'm pretty sure the files are fine I can copy them to the computer and view them as jpegs but I can't get them into iPhoto.
    Any ideas?

Yes that worked. I also realised that I'd tried to scan as another user on the Mac, so I logged in as that user and got rid of the offending photo.
So now I'm back in the original user and my Import folder is at the desktop and I can import new photos from my SD card...hooray! However when I try to move the import folder back to the iPhoto library I get the original error when trying to import new stuff. Am I stuck with my Import folder on the desktop? (Not a big deal if I am, just wondering)
    Thank you!

ok guys i have no clue but my mac was working perfectly but now this is the 3rd time that out of nowhere, my mac simply restarts, i dont get the kernel panic screen or anything , my mac just simply restarts, what is wrong with it? the only new thing i installed is that i updated itunes to itunes 7.5 and i belive thats when the problem started, just 2 minutes ago i pluged my iphone to the dock to charge it, itunes loaded up because it automaticlly does that when i plug in my iphone and ban my imac restarted, so i do belive its itunes, how can i uninstall itunes so that i can reinstall an older version of itunes which i had before ? i know where to get the old itunes version can u just tell me how to uninstall itunes please? i checked with disk utility, the disk returned no errors aswell as the permission check.

Software conflicts should not cause a forced restart. Have you checked your power cord make sure it's plugged in securely both on the back of the iMac and at the wall socket? Shut down your computer before you check the power cord. If it passed the Disk Verification then that's not the problem and Disk Warrior will not fix it. Have you installed any third party RAM recently? You could try running Apple Hardware Test. Run the extended test.
