Msi 875 Neo safe buy?

Hi bas
My two boys want to build a game-machine each, based on the 875 chipset. We 've been reading most of the posts on the 875 Neo (our favorite board so far after reading reviews), but it's not easy to decide, whether the board is a safe buy. Will it run on Kingston HyperX PC3500 with bios 1.0, which it probably is shipped with? If we use Win XP on NTFS, must we use the floppy/ramdisk method to upgrade the bios? Would you recommend a bios-upgrade to  v.1.4 or should we rather wait for the next bios from Msi?
Regards

The board will probably ship with bios version 1.2, if you want to overclock, flash bios 1.3b2 onto it, else bios v1.4.

  • With msi 875 P Colored Edges

After Inserting Msi FX5900XT in a MSI 875P Neo LSR Board
the Fx5900xt works fine as long as the Case is open .
When Closing the Case i get Colored Edges on the Screen
(purple ,Red Green Yellow blue ) more than a inch allaround the Screen . The Card works fine in another Pc and the problem happend imediatly , there is enough Airflow and it does not seem to be a heat related Problem .
Could the Flasing Colored Leds integrated in the  Northbridgecooler be a Problem for the FX5900XT because i do not have a Window in my Case and the Light flashes on the inside .
Another Problem that the Pc hangs when i try to Reboot it shuts down does on Piep and then does not start up untill i press the reset button ? Can this be solved with a Bios Upgrade ?

    thanx for your reply
i dont think it has anything to do with the Case because the Card worked fine in the same Case on MSI 845 Board ( without Flashing Leds )
If there would be interferance of a wireless keyboard or so , then it would also happen with  the Case open, but with the Case open the Card works fine .
However the Case is metall and it Reflects those Leds on the Northbridgefan .
There is no option to disable them .
Anyone know of a way to remove them without losing Warranty .
    Or to Shield them .

  • 875 neo - 8x agp ti4200 incompatible

Having problems with a ti4200 8x agp and a new msi 875 neo
When running in 8x agp mode, i am getting problems with the display when using 3d games, ie white flashes and eventual freezing up.
Running in an msi 845 chipset, the card runs fine at 8x agp mode
After been unsuccessful in trying to find a way to set the agp speed setting with the 875 neo under bios, i have resorted to using rivatuner to set the agp to 4x via software, and now the card works fine.
Is there any issues regarding the running of 8x agp video cards and the 875 chipset
    Running P4 2.4c and corsair 512meg twinx pc3200
    Gainward TI4200 128 meg 8x agp

I had issues with PNY Cards Ti4200 8x and also Pny Ti4400 both worked fine on other boards but not this one. Upgraded to ATI 9800 PRO and glad I did.]

  • 875 Neo 2

I wonder can anyone help me out and tell me were i have gone wrong.
    i have just bought the MSI 875 Neo 2 mainboard , 3.0ghz FSB800,1 gb ddr400 mem , SB Audio 2 Plat EX , Radeon 9800pro 128,SCSI Card(Booting From)running XP.Bois 1.7
    Disabled On Board Sound.
I have a few problems. (Have Downloaded new Updates)
    1) Live monitor Crashes with error on Start up. Service is not Loaded ( Sometimes ).
    2) Corecenter crashes my board and resets when i click on Auto. What do i need to setup for this to work or what is the best way to overclock this.??
    3) when i go into the BIOS and try to switch from Slow Mode to Turbo my borad Hung on OS load and when i powered off and on the error from the bios was Timings to tight. The bios reset to defaults and i had to setup boot order and other things again.
I am new to all the overclocking stuff can anyone suggest anything, i have uninstalled CoreCenter as i did not want to crash my PC is there a Version i should use.
    Thanks.

First off i would like to thank you all for you help.
I have solved my problem with the MB being unstable with Corecenter and LiveMonitor throwing up errors at login.
I stopped both apps loading at start up as they must hook into services. Xp is different from NT and 2000 in the way it loads Services, Microsoft thought they would make there OS seem like it boots faster by giving you a Logon screen in XP before all the services are loaded and running. This gives you the image that XP is super fast at loading.
So the problem has been solved, by not having the Apps load automatically while the services are not quite ready. Starting them a short period after login or waiting a while after the login screen comes up works everytime and i have managed to OC using the bios Fast option.
Thanks again , also i must say my PC is now like OH MY GOD HOW FAST !!!!.

  • MSI 875 Pro Neo FIS2R - HDD-LED doesn`t work

    Hello,
yesterday I got my new MSI 875 Pro Neo FIS2R.
Installation of motherboard and Windows XP went without any problem. So I`m very satisfied with this Board.
But now I noticed, that the HDD-LED doesn`t show any activity.
Then I turned around the HDD-LED plug of the Case with again no success: The HDD-LED doesn`t shine...
    My (IDE-)storage-components are:
    Primary Master: NEC DVD-ROM
    Primary Slave: NEC DVD-RW
    2 x WD Raptor (SATA) as RAID0 (ICH5R)
Is there anything wrong ? What can I do ??

    Hello Maesus,
yes, I read your reply. But it didn`t answer my question, why HDD-LED don`t show any DVD-ROM activities (remember, DVD-ROM is IDE-primary master and DVD-RW is primary slave)...

  • Should i buy this MSI K8N NEO board or shouldi skipp it ?

Im reading so many problems that you guys are having with this board that it makes those reviews i read seem fake.   For one i was gana buy a Dangerden RBX waterblock to continue the watercooling on my pc which iv done for 2 years now, with a 3000+ clawhammer Mobile and this MSI K8N NEO platinum board.
Now im reading on here in the faq and from otherp eople that the board supportsm obiles but has tons of Quirks in it, people o nthe overclockers.com forums with mobiles and this board have to run @ 1.7 to get the cpu to run @ stock thats pathetic.  Also i keep seeing people o nthese forums that are only getting 166fsb/250HTT ratios, or lower.
I thought this board can do 300HTT or maybe close to it.  Yet tons of people are getting only 210-240HTT max on thier board's. because they cant seem to lower the multi's.
Now that i read all this stuff im thinking of buying the new Epox board with a desktop 3200 clawhammer, unless thier are some people out thier who havent had any probs with mobiles and overclocking.

It isnt just the Graphic issue with the 9600's im talking abut, its the whole bunch of otherp roblems, where people cant install windows xp or 2000, or are having overclocking issues, or having issues with 2 or more sticks of ram, where some boards support mobiles and some dont and the ones that do like the K8N NEO have major problems like Multiplyer and voltage issues.
Its really very sad.  Im pissed off right now iwanna upgrade my pc but it seems any mobo i wanna go to has major problems.

  • MSI P35 Neo-F (MS-7360): Computer randomly freezes while playing games

    Hi there,
I have reached the end of my technical knowledge right now and I'm not even sure if this area of the forum is appropriate. The problem:
While playing higher-end games like Crysis 2, Anno 1404, Mass Effect 2 etc. my computer randomly freezes and the last few milliseconds of sound are being looped on my speakers (kind of like a buzzing sound).
By "freezing" I mean that my computer becomes unresponsive to any action other than pressing the Reset-Button or holding down the Power-Up-Button (no reaction to Ctrl+Alt+Del, Alt+F4, Alt+Tab, no mouse movement... you get it).
There's no exact timing as to when these freezes occur. The fastest freeze happened after less than a minute of playing a game, slowes one (just today after switching to my newer case with better cooling) took about 2 hours.
This freeze only occurs while my System is under load. No freezes while browsing the web, using office programs, listening to music or watching videos.
    System Specs:
        Mainboard: MSI P35 Neo-F (MSI-7360)
        CPU: Intel Core2Quad Q6600 @2.4GHz
        RAM: 4x 1GB DDR2-800 Corsair XMS2
Graphics: Gainward GeForce GTX 560 Ti, 1GB GDDR5 VRAM
PSU: Antec High Current Gamer 620W (upgraded from Xilence XP600, 600W)
New CPU Cooler: Arctic Freezer 13 Pro (upgraded from OEM Intel Boxed Cooler)
New Case: Zalman Z9 Plus w/ 4x 120 mm Fans (Upgraded from a Case with only 1x 250mm side Fan)
        2 Western Digital HDD (1x 2TB, 1x320 GB)
1 DVD Reader/Burner (unimportant for that error I guess)
        OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit
        2 Screens: 1x 24" Asus VS248H and 1x 21" LG Flatron Wide W2240T
Since this error is bugging me for quite a while now and since this is not the first forum I'm trying to get help from, here's a list of steps i already took to get rid of it, obviously to no good use:
reinstalled games where the freeze occurred
updated all Drivers (including cleaning old versions in safe mode; also tried older drivers)
        updated BIOS to v1.A0
        Reinstalled Windows
bought new Case and CPU Cooler to improve Air Flow/Cooling
checked Seating of all components (took out, cleaned, reapplied thermal grease where neccessary, re-inserted)
cleaned old case of dust (obviously no problem in the new case, which is 2 days "old")
ran 7 sequences of Memtes86+ without any errors
ran Prime95 without any errors for about 45 Minutes
ran Furmark for 15 Minutes under full load (burn-in test) without any problems, even though my graphics card hit the 100°C frequency-cut level
ran Furmark and Prime95 simultaneously without any problems
took records of component temperatures and system voltages without noticing anything unusual (at least not after i switched to the newer PSU, which is about 1 Month old - yet didn't resolve the problem)
tested with cyclic removal of 1 RAM device to further rule out RAM malfunction
tested with only 2 RAM devices in dual channel mode (Slots 1 and 3)
tried to reduce RAM clock (800 MHz --> 667 MHz) to no avail
checked S.M.A.R.T. values of HDDs, no issues reported
        tested without any background programs
raised/lowered voltages to RAM, CPU and Chipset in BIOS to increase logic circuit stability/decrease heat production
I need to mention: After I transferred my system to the new case, i was able to play longer than average compared to my old case. So I am guessing that improper cooling was part of the problem, yet improving cooling obviously didn't resolve it.
Since these freezes are really annoying and nobody could help me resolve this so far, I'm hoping to find some new ways of narrowing down the problem or even getting rid of it here.
    Regards
    Sebb

Lets be realistic. A system with a 560TI is recommended to have a around 31Amps under full load, a CX500 would be sufficient.
Have you monitored your CPU and memory utilisation ?
As suggested before, test the GPU in another computer to see if the behaviour is the same.
Whew, I thought for a second there that my common sense had left me when I saw that 60-Amp-Post ^^
Yes, I monitored CPU and RAM usage, there is no recognizeable pattern to be seen and it almost never happens under full load.
I will see if a friend of mine can test my GPU on his computer, and I will test it underclocked right away.
Though one more question regarding that: Should I only underclock GPU Core Clock or both Core and RAM clock?

  • Problem with S-ATA optical drive(MSI 875P Neo)

    Ahoy MSIers,
I am in a most dire situation, and before I go to spend money on some computer-tech guy to solve my problem, I thought maybe you could help me.
    *My PC specs:
    Intel Pentium 4 Northwood C 2800Mhz
    MSI 875P Neo
    A-DATA 512Mb RAM DDR 400 * 2(1024)
    PowerColor Radeon 9800Pro
Western Digital Hard Drive 80Gb 8Mb buffer P-ATA
Pioneer DVR-212D S-ATA (The main issue here)
    Bios - AMIBIOS - VERSION 3.31a
    Windows XP Pro - SP2
Until 2 days ago I owned an MSI CD(P-ATA) burner which was virtually dead.
2 days ago, It died completely, So I decided that I will not just replace a CD burner for a CD burner... no! I will buy myself a new shiny DVD burner!
So I bought myself a Pioneer DVR-212D(S-ATA) and I went on with installing it.
I plugged the Serial Power Cable from the PSU to the drive, and connected the drive and the S-ATA port on my M-Board with a serial-ata cable.
I booted up, and found that the device was nowhere to be found although power is being transferred to it(the drive opens and closes when pressing it's eject button).
I searched the net and found that I was supposed to "enable" S-ATA in my BIOS.
Tried that, yet every setting I tried besides the default setting gives makes the computer freeze for a few minutes at the MSI logo and then a "friendly" error massage appears, usually it's something like
"4th master drive ATAPI incompatible" ( the number changes, I haven't got a clue why).
Searched the net a bit more and found almost nothing... most s-ata "problems" were about booting from a s-ata hard drive....
I am getting desperate, So in order to maximize the chances of me getting help solving this issue, I took a few pictures of the BIOS and the inside of my case... maybe it will help, I dunno.
    Here are some pics:
The S-ATA cable connected to the Mother-Board
Back of the DVD burner with the S-ATA cable attached
    BIOS - standard CMOS features
    BIOS - Integrated Peripherals
    On-Chip IDE configuration
    P.S
I have a DVD ROM(Toshiba, nothing special) and I would of course occasionally like to burn Dvds/Cd's from my DVD ROM to my DVD burner. However, seeing as the DVD burner is S-ATA, there is no physical connection what so ever between the two drives(unlike in P-ATA connection where each cable has 3 "connections", 2 for drives(hard or optical) and one for the Motherboard) I really don't know how I can "achieve" this.

A friend of my father's, whose occupation is a computer technician toke a look at the PC and bios settings today.
WE tried EVERYTHING and It still wouldn't work so we concluded that the problem is probably in the hardware.
There were two possible "suspects" here - The Mother Board(specificially the S-ATA controller/ports on it) or the drive itself.
We connected the drive to my sister's computer and it worked like a charm.
So the answer was clear - something was wrong with the board.
I replaced my S-ATA drive for an IDE drive, and all is well.
    Well
that's the end of that story

  • VCORE PROBLEMS WITH MSI P35 NEO F

To see if I can help or at least explain what's happening, buy a MSI P35 NEO F for using a quad, the topic is as follows handling vcore is rare
First thing I can not put less voltage that the cpu brings default, second what happens next if bios setting 1.3250 vcore for Quad, once in both windows everest, cpuz, like others programs tell me that this placed on 1.40 vcore which is excessive for the speed at which the quad, this is so in this mobo? Their story that was installed version 1.20 bios which handled vcore%, the upgrade to version 1.40 and is now handled in decimals (numbers) vcore, but still the problem
You pull more vcore which setting in bios and if you want to download the vcore eg put 1.26 vcore not let you because it takes the vcore default of cpu minimum.
i'm  not crashing or problems with the temperatures, but nobody likes to have more vcore's necessary.
Wonder because being rookie of this mobo, maybe there's some bios version that fixes this bug or someone knows something else, thank you guys

    2 X 1GB G.SKILL 6400
    PSU 550 MODULAR TOPOWER
-- SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH --

You can slap 1.6v in that CPU and temps won't rise that much.
Core 2 Duo/Quad operates @ 1.250-1.425, anywhere in between those values is perfectly stable for Intel stock cooler and frequency.
Absolutely nothing to worry about. But if you want to complain about >1c I really can't see the sense in that.

  • [Athlon64] MSI K8T NEO-V : incompatibility with ATI RADEON 9800 PRO

    Hi,
I read all the subjets on this forum about Radeon problems with MSI K8T NEO motherboard.  Most of the peple can't use their graphic card in all situations.
    My PC is :
    -MSI K8T NEO-V
    -AMD-64 3200
    -Power : 400W
    -ATI RADEON 9800 PRO
-1 Go DDRAM (2x512 in single channel)
    -Hercules Digifires 7.1
    I bought a new MSI K8T NEO-V with AMD 64.
The problem is that I can't use the computer in the games with AGP 8X even if I try to enable-disable all the options possibles in BIOS and Windows (fast write ...) : The computer freeze (screen disapear as if there was no video signal), reboot or return to Windows disabling the accelerated mode.
But in AGP 4X, all the game run without problem with all setups of BIOS !!!
I tried all the drivers (the new and the old drivers).  Even if all are updated, it freeze.
There are no BIOS update for my motherboard. I saw that some people had BIOS update for compatibility with some Radeon cards ...
So, I don't know how to repair the problem because AGP 8X is AGP 8X and not 4X, and my Radeon run fine on other computer, and nothing say that Radeon 9800 pro don't run on this motherboard.
Does someone have the solution to make it work ? Does a new BIOS or driver update exist somewhere for Radeon cards ?

What Bas said about 30+ amps on the 12v rail does have merit. Even if you don't use it now there may come a time when you want to upgrade the system and certainly you won't want to buy yet another PSU then. A High end vid card now takes almost as much as the CPU to operate. Now days the 12v rail is the most important. Past systems regulated everything off the 5v railk and 12v was used mostly for powering drive motors. Now though the MB's use the 12v line to regulate all the voltages for the CPU, Chipset and other features as does the Vid cards. 3.3 volt lines are used for memory so we hardly use any 5v nowdays.
You have an older viod card and that does not eat much 12v but if you upgrade the most likely peice will be the vid card. You could go through this whole thing all over again if you are not careful to plan for that now with a new PSU purchase.
If the computer shop gives you a bunch of bull about power needs havbe them stop by the forum and we can help set them straight on this. There is more than enough data from MSI and historical data here that suggests that 16a on the 12v rail is certainly not enough. Hey I am not trying to sell you anything. I am just trying to help you get it right. The computer shop is the one trying to sell you something we just feel they are selling the wrong junk.

  • MSI K8N NEO Platinum Edition memory question

    Hi there,
I've currently got a MSI K8N NEO Platinum Edition (Nforce 3) motherboard and 2X 512 MB Corsair Value Select memory modules (both double sided) running at DDR 400 - this runs completely stable and has done for a number of months. I would like to increase my memory to 1.5 Gig but there seems to be a lot of issues?
I originally planned to buy an additional 512 Meg Corsair value select chip and place it in Bank 3 - is this acceptable?
I assue that i would have to drop the speed down to DDR 333 from 400, could anyone tell me how much of a difference this actually makes (when playing FPS games Doom3 etc..) ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as i've been looking through both this forum and the Corsair one and i cant seem to find the answer.
    thanks in advance !

Just note that there are combinations of two sticks that will also make the board run in DDR333 mode (see page 2-8 of the manual). For example, using two double-sided sticks in DIMM2 and DIMM3. I've actually managed to get it to work at DDR400 in those two slots, but it's not perfectly stable and overclocking diminishes drastically. Bottom line is the system will work fine when forced to DDR333...as long as you don't expect to overclock the RAM to any significant degree.

"I've noticed that two of the memory sticks are single sided and the other two are dual sided! Could this be the origin for the problem?"
It seems you are using 2 high density sticks and 2 low density sticks. tRFC would certainly be different between the 2. Don't mix memory like that as you will have problems. To avoid memory problems like that ensure that all 4 are the same. Best would be 2x4 GB kit. At the very least get another kit the same as the 2 new ones and don't use the old ones.
Well... i thought memory sticks would have to be same capacity (this case, 1Gb) and same velocity, 667MHZ.
Never thought about SS or DS.
In this case... the older ones, OEM, are DS... the new ones, Kingstone, are SS... witch are better to keep and to buy new ones?
