MSI 875P FISR2 not recognizing cd-rom discs

I'll start off with "everything was working" before I started sleeving my power supply (which I am now regretting). I am at work now, but will provide as much detail as I can. Any suggestions are welcome.
Anyway, after putting everything back together, I have some problems with my Lite-On DVD/CD-ROM and also my CDRW and floppy drives. After booting up and getting into XP Pro (w/service pack 1), the cd drives and floppy don't seem to recognize a disc when it has been put in. When you put something in one of these guys and drill into it via Explorer, I get the message "Please insert disc." BIOS recognized the drives and XP seems to see them (the icons show up in my computer). However I didn't check the device manager in XP. The strangest thing is that if I leave a cd in the drive and boot up, everything works fine. Auto-insert works and fires up the cd, and I can drill down into it's contents, etc. Everything seems normal.
Here is what I have tried so far:
- tried another IDE connection
- made sure all cables and power connection were seated tightly.
- tried just using one device hooked up a time (and set to master)
I am completely baffled by this and would appreciate any thoughts you might have. I ran outa time last night, but what I plan to do tonight  is hook the drives up to my other computer and see if they work correctly there as well as hook another cd player up to the new machine and try it. I guess I can also try another IDE cable, but again, the cable seems to work fine if you boot the pc up with the cd in the player.
I think I have a spare power supply I can even try, but I just can't imagine that this is the problem (although it is the one thing that has been changed). I mean, everything is getting power....
Here is what I can remember about my system:
MSI 875P FISR2
Intel 2.8 P4 800mhz FSB
Kingston DDR400 (1 gig)
PixelView (NVIDIA 5900) grahpics card
Enermax EG365P-VE (350 watts)
Western Digital 120 gig SATA drive
Bios version 1.4
Lite-On DVD/CD-ROM
Dell CD-RW
XP Pro w/service pack 1

Hi strummer2k,
If your using the MSI round cables then they will be Ultra 133 straps but there are two types, the 40 pin ones which will limit it to DMA 33/66 and the 80 pin ones which will enable ULTRA 100/133. I'm surprised how many people arn't aware of that and I recently did a small contract for a Computer Hardware shop in the city and the guys there were suprised when I showed them the differnce, it can boost performance quite a bit. The other important thing is to go into device manager and select your IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and select you Primary & Secondary IDE Channels and right click one of these at a time & select Properties/Advanced settings.
You will need to have the correect straps for the following to work:
You will see a setting which says PIO Only or DMA if available - select DMA if available, do the same with the other channel and reboot and you will be running Ultra DMA for your drives.  If you have an older CD Rom that doesn't support Ultra DMA & is on the same channel as another drive then it will only run at PIO on that channel. Im using W2K and I'm guessing that XP is still using the same functions?
This is going to make your hard drives run a lot faster as well as they will be using one of the channels, most likely Primary.
Some
bios's have settings that can enable/disable this as well

I'm running V10.6.8 and the system is not recognizing the presence of a San Disc (SDHC) adapter that I plug into the left side of the keyboard. This always worked in the past. Whats changed? I can't upload my images to a folder.

Another item I'd found when getting an SD card for an older camera was the lack of backward support from the SD card if it was too new, while a newer camera can sometimes use an older SD card at a slower read-write speed. There are limits and ceilings on what kind of card works with old/new stuff.
So I ended up taking a nice SD card back to one store and had to settle on a 'walmart kinda dubious kingston two pack a cure' for the older Panasonic Lumix. Smaller capacity but seems to work OK for the era. I don't trust kingston with macs, but this 10 y/o Lumix seems to not care about that.
Hopefully you can obtain the correct cards, because some stores only sell parts for their inventory of cameras. And some adapters are limited too.
Depending on what I'm doing with the card and the camera it goes with, I attach the camera to the computer and not just the card in a reader. That way I can file items inside the camera SD card in a way the camera won't overwrite them. Later when I save everything from the card into an external hard disk drive, all my filed folders of images by date (I created in the SD) appear in order, in the later archive. Easier too, when I burn to DVD or CD media, to create yet another archive away from the computer or the camera.
    Good luck & happy computing!

The drive just tryes to run over and over but never mounts the disc.
    Any recomendations?

make sure you install the apple hardware drivers the correct video card driver is required to use external displays
one can make a driver stick in bootcamp on osx or one can download the zip file with drivers from apple

Fuji and Verbatim DVD+R not being recognized in DVD burner in iMac.  Burned audio CD's just fine.

If you want to save yourself a lot of headaches go out and buy a Tray Load external DVD burner that connects to the computer by USB.
The Apple, Not So, Superdrive is very picky about discs you can use. Or simply your new Mac came with a bad Superdrive.

  • IPOD not recognized/copying to disc failed: Toshiba Laptop USB the issue!

Just got my IPOD back from servicing (needed new battery). While syncing, every 20 or 30 songs a message appeared: Attempting to copy to the disk failed...
I kept trying, but eventually Itunes (and Windows) wouldn't even recognize the IPOD (even the IPOD gave up...would flash the "do not disconnect" for a few seconds then immediately default back to default mode (menus, etc.) I could not restore.
My symptoms seemed to be similar to lots of other problems I saw in the discussion boards. THEN...I somehow linked to this file:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300836
I had to use my Toshiba laptop's Device Manager to disable the "enhanced" speed USB port. Presto! Immediately the IPOD was recognized and updated FULLY (albeit at very slow speed). (2 hours for 850 tunes). What I don't understand is why this suddenly started to happen? HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE !

  • Lacie 1Tb USB HDD not recognized, even in Disc Utility

    Hi to all,
I have just bought a Lacie 1Tb external USB disk. It did not work correctly under Mac OS X but it works when I use it under Parallels. It is formatted as NTFS and I manage to use correctly under OS X my old Lacie 250 Gb (also NTFS). When I connect the drive to my MacBook Pro nothing happens or sometimes a folder appears on my desktop (with the content of the HDD, read only) and in Finder the HDD is mounted with an icon with a W on it (not the usual orange icon with usb symbol). I cannot use the HDD. If I open Disc Utility the HDD is not shown at all but it appears correctly under System Profile. If I boot with the installation DVD and the USB attached, Disc Utility (launched from the DVD) sees correctly the drive. My conclusion is that there is some software that conflict with Mac OS X in mounting the device. Someone of you has any clue to provide? Is there a way to "reset" the way MAC OS X handles NTFS partitions (if it is a problem with NTFS)? The USB disk works correctly on another Mac with OS X (I tried it at the shop).
Thank you in advance for your help and I wish you all a Happy New Year.

    Thank you for your reply.
At the moment also the other HDD has the same behaviour. It looks like I screwed up the usual NTFS OS X handling What I did was to uninstall Mac Fuse completely (by disabling it and then by removing the icon from System Preferences, as described in the Mac Fuse help page). I had no need to install drivers to make the "old" HDD to work (when it worked . Also when I tested the 1TB HDD on a Mac at the shop, the Mac came with a clean standard install. The worst thing is that Disc Utility completely ignores the HDD presence so I cannot even initialize it. As I said I could initialize it booting with installation DVD but I would like to fix the issue. I removed Mac Fuse I had installed to try to reset the things... with no success I think that, even without any external software to read/write NTFS partitions, I should be able to mount the drive or at least work with it under Disk Utility, shouldn't I?

  • MSI KT4V Motherboard not recognizing my FX5200

I just started building an old computer for a friend. Im taking parts from two older computers and putting them into one. Im taking my friends processor, hard drive, dvd drive, floppy, and ram. Im putting that into my old PC case with my old geforce fx 5200, my old MSI KT4v Ms-6712 ver:1 AGP 8x motherboard. I used to use that old case with that motherboard and video card and it worked fine. Now all the sudden, possible from moving the motherboard from different PCs and such, when i put everything into the case it all seemed to work fine. Except that I'm not even getting a signal from my video card. I have a 350watt power supply that i know is sufficient enough, but my monitor isn't getting a signal from the video card. I tried using an old geforce 2 from a friends PC to test it and it doesn't work in that PC either, so i've ruled out it being a problem with the video card, because my fx5200 works fine in my other friends PC.  ??? I'm wondering if their is a problem with my motherboards AGP slot not being able to detect my FX 5200. I know that moving a different processor to a new motherboard requires the reinstallation of windows, but i should be getting something on the monitor.  Any suggestions or helpful information would be nice. I've searched the internet and google for quite some time and i havn't found any helpful information about possible broken AGP slots or the motherboard not even getting a signal through the AGP card. Help would be nice-  If i left out any important information please let me know, thanks

Well, heres what i tried to do. I tried clearing the cmos. Going by these instructions
    1-touch PSU to clear static
    2-remove the motherboard battery
    3-switch Jbat1 jumper from 1-2 to 2-3
    4- wait atleast 10 minutes
    5-switch jumper back
    6-reinsert the battery
    7-boot up etc.
I did all that but still no luck. The screen was still blank when i booted it up. I didn't unplug everything before resetting CMOS(by that i mean the harddrive, floppy, and DVD, but i did unplug it from wall and everything), because it didn't say to in a MSI support page. I did try to boot up with the barebones setup though after resetting cmos but still no luck. Just the CPU/heatsink, motherboard, one stick of ram, and video card. Still nothing happening on the screen. I do have an extra power supply and im going to try putting that in next. The one that is currently in there was used in my friends PC and was working fine. Ill give my larger power supply a try though. Ill post back later about if the power supply did anythiing or not. Thanks
p.s.-Before you mentioned the standoffs and im going to look under the motherboard as well to see if their are too many or too little. The testing continues....

  • Frozen iMac not recognized as startup disc after reformat

So our iMac (Mountain Lion OS) was running slow, to a crawl, and after a restart would hang on the gray screen/ spinner. Several attempts to reboot were fruitless. The fan was blaring on reboot attempts. Tried then to boot in Safe Mode - which would also hang on the gray screen. Tried zapping PRAM (which resolved the fan issue), booting as Single or Verbose, etc.- none of this stuff seemed to work.
Eventually we were able to boot off a USB drive. Awesome. Went to Disc Utility. The Macintosh HD was "dimmed out" in the device list, however it was still selectable so we ran Verify... which it could not complete. It prompted us to Repair Disc. After hitting repair, it tells us the disc is not repairable and we need to reformat. Awesome.
Ran the reformat. No problems. Reinstalled system. No problems. Rebooted computer- hangs on gray screen AGAIN. Same deal running through the usual reboot scenarios. No dice. So we booted off the USB again. Ran the Verify/ Repair and all seems to check out fine. Go to startup disc to restart system- our harddrive does not even show up as a startup disc option!
I've been using Macs forever and never seen this one. Totally stumped. Any offers of help or ideas would be hugely appreciated. This iMac is only about 2.5 years old. Mostly used as a gaming system for the kids.
    Thanks
    a

Run Apple Hardware test in extended mode  a minimum of 3x back to back. If you receive hardware errors (as I anticipate) then you know you have a hardware issue. I suspect the HD is dying.  Because we don't know which iMac you own it's difficult to say if the HD is easy to replace or not. What I mean is if you own a 2009 or later iMac Apple began installing HD's that had fan sensors integrated into the HD, most off the shelf HD's don't have that feature. If you have 2009 or later machine then I'd recommend contacting OWC (www.macsales.com) to look for options. Your other option of course is to take the machine into your local Apple Store or AASP for a HD replacement.

  • My G5 is not recognizing/mounting any discs-CD,DVD,OSX Software, etc.

When I put any type of disc in nothing happens. I had just used Toast to burn a CD which I never do ( I burn my CD's w/ Itunes) and then this started. I repaired permissions and nothing happened. Ig anyone knows waht my problem might be please advise.

I have been having a similar problem since I updated to 10.4.7. I can read factory-made CDs and DVDs, as well as CDRs. However, I am unable to read ANY burned DVD, regardless of whether I burned it or if somebody else did. I put the disc it, the machine ponders it for a moment, then it ejects it. I can still burn DVDs, though. Very odd.

    Welcome to the Apple boards:
The drive may need a firmware update.
It's also possible that the drive is no longer working properly.
Does the drive eject only the Leopard DVD or any other movie DVD for example?
    What about CDs?
You might also clean the lens on the optical drive. RadioShack sells several CD/DVD lens cleaners.
Also, check in the system profiler under disk burning for any possible information about reading DVDs.
Remember that the Leopard DVD is a dual-layer DVD. Your drive should be able to read it, but the DL reading part is not the same as the normal reading part. I think it uses a different laser at the minimum.

  • MSI K8N Neo4 not recognizing USB 2.0

All my USB ports are recognized as being USB 1.1.  Here's the kicker, in Device Manager, there are two USB Controller nodes.  One has a Standard OpenHCD USB Host controller (USB 1.1) and the other node has a PCI Class USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller.  However, all my devices are being run off the USB 1.1 controller.  If I disable or uninstall the OHCD controller, none of my devices work even with the Enhanced controller still available.  I'm at my wits end on how to get this taken care of.  Any advice would be appreciated it.

    Bataar,
You don't say which neo4 you have as there are 7 models this can be abit confusing. Which NF4 Motherboard Do I Have.
on the 7100 SLI versions the bios option is as described in my 1st post the onboard devices section.
on the 7125 Ultra versions Bios the USB Controller is in Integrated peripherals.
options are the same in both.
I do have the 7125 board and under Integrated Peripherals, the only option as far as the USB Controller is enable or disable.  That's it.

  • MSI P55 GD65 - Not recognizing half my RAM.

I have seen many topics regarding issues such as this.  This case, however, is a little different.  Yes, my Windows OS sees 4GB installed, and says only 1.99GB usable.  However, my Ubuntu partition only sees 2GB, and in my BIOS settings it recognizes that there are two memory slots in use, DIMM1 and DIMM3, but still only says that there is 2GB of physical memory.  I am using G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7D-4GBRM memory.  Now, I can somewhat see a case where the BIOS reports all 4GB and the OS only uses some, but in this case, Windows DOES recognize there is 4GB of memory in the machine (though it lists 2GB as hardware reserved).  I am very wary of trying to take out the proc and check for bent pins, as there is an annoying heatsink on it, and I do not have too much experience with hardware (this is the first machine I built).
Thanks in advance for the help!

Did you put standoffs on the case before you mounted the motherboard?  If you didnt, you probably shorted your motherboard out.  At least thats what happened to me on my first computer built from scratch.  G.Skill also recommends putting 1 stick in, then running it, then installing the second stick after it recognizes the first.

  • Crashing With CD-RW's and/or Not Recognizing Media

I would say about 85% of the time when dealing with a CD in my system, Logic Pro X crashes on me.  For example, when I insert a blank CD-RW (I test my songs by burning a CD and then listening in my car), Logic will often crash.  After burning a CD-RW, Logic often crashes...most of the time after I eject the CD.  I've been submitting the report to Apple every time Logic crashes.
Also, since I'm constantly burning CD's to test my songs, I initially went into my system preferences and selected the default action of "ignore" for when I insert a blank CD-RW.  When inserting a CD-RW that has tracks on it, I set the default action to be to start the Disc Utility (so I can erase the CD-RW in order to re-bounce a song I'm working on).  When I did this, Logic wouldn't recognize the blank CD's anymore.  So, I changed the default action for inserting blank CD-RW's to be "ask me."  While this seems to have resolved the issue of Logic not recognizing the blank disc, now I get a pop up every time I insert a blank CD asking me what I want to do, and then I need to click "ignore."
Is anyone else experiencing these issues?  I'm fairly new to these discussion boards, so I'm also curious...does Apple read these to help?

I'm using Nero Burning ROM 6; writing a data DVD to Memorex 4x DVD+R Media.
I receive the following errors at the end of the burn process:
    Invalid Field in Command
Could not perform end of Disc-at-Once
Nero doesn't seem to allow me to change the write method to something other than Disc-at-Once.
Device Manager shows: "ATAPI DVD RW 8XMax"

    Any suggestions?

the link you provided lists the DR8-A as a "supported" drive... it's the 4th one from the top... DVD+/-R/RW8XMAX
and i've had no problem burning CD-R's with my MSI drive... i've come to the theory that i'm having issues burning to DVD+Rs because I'm using Memorex DVD+Rs... which are not on MSI's list of supported media for the DR8-A... I've got some Ritek discs on order, and will report back my findings when they arrive.
I'm also going to download the most recent updates for Nero 6 for shits and giggles.
My current version of Nero is 6.0.0.0, and the most recent update is version 6.3.1.6
also, in my first post, i said that i had no problems burning to Memorex CD-Rs... but they are actually Maxell CD-Rs...
