Msi 8800 ultra OC.....unstable ? when ?

hi all
heres a question : got a new rig in town the other day, fast as hell...but like any overclocker, one cannot leave his previous ways die hard, so I tried to find boundaries of an already insane setup. The 8800 ultra stock core is suppoosed to be 660 and memory 1150.Anyways, I downloaded ntune, and tried to work some stuff...But for some reason whenever I tried to oc up to around 680/1190 I got a black screen for a second, and then a vista message that the graphics device driver has crashed but recovered. After that I need to reboot the system if I want to run anything else....Now ocing such a beast would definitly allow for some higher, alot higher in fact, frequencies due to the used architecture in said cards...Im using 3 fans + the stock one, when at full performance, temps rarely surpas 70 degrees.Im using vista 32 bit, and nvidia forceware 163.75 drivers
how come I read of some people winding their gtx' to 700+mhz core and memory up to 1250... ? or supposedly their Ultras

Volt mod. I wouldn't go there.
8800Ultra is already overkill. Don't overoverkill - it's pointless.

  • MSI 8800 Ultra fan issue

    Hello!
I have a weird issue with my 8800 ultra graphics card. When the GPU is running on idle the temps are around 48C-50C.I tried to play battlefield 3 and the temps are going up to 73C and my pc is crashing. The problem is that the graphics card fan is not running on 100% and when the rpm drops down it lets the temp go above 70C.When the fan goes on 100% the temerature immediately drops down under 60C.I have tried to download MSI Afterburner,Riva tuner,Nvidia ntune but all is the same.If I munually alter the fan speed on 100% is still not running on 100% druing Battlefield 3.I can hear when the fan slows down and when speeds up the system is crashed...nothing helps just the restart..

Well I cant tell you that because I have got only that game installed on my pc. But that before I have played COD Modern Warefare 3 without any problems.Even this as well the game is running smoothly than the fan rpm drops down and a minute later the whole system is crashed....
Is there any other way the keep the fan speed on max?Because with the softwares what I have used they keep the fan running on 100% but when I start the BF3 it seems like the card is completly ignoring my settings...

  • MSI 8800 Ultra stops working

On the 9th of Feb, during a day of average PC usage, everything locked up and stopped working. After a fruitless evening, I discovered it was my 8800 that was playing up. When I start something graphics intensive my PC locks up, forcing a manual restart. Tried multiple different things, all ending up the same.
Also, sometimes when something loads, there are red dots that appear all ver the screen, which either disappear or make me have to restart.

Is this an OC edition or are you overclocking the card.  Do as Bosskiller suggests.  Also, check to see that the fan isn't clogged with dust--check your case for the need for cleaning.

  • MSI GeForce 8800 Ultra OC Lock / Freeze ups

Hi, this seems to be a general problem not just with MSI, I'm reading exactly the same problems being experienced by other 'Ultra' users.
After 20 or so mins of play (mainly bf2 / COH / Far Cry for me) the card/display driver crashes, the screen flickers and sound pulses then ultimately Windows (XP) locks-up/BSOD's.
If I ctrl-tab quick enough I can go back into Windows and 2d is fine. If I then try and reload a game or any 3d app, it will immediately hang again, ie the only way to recover is to reboot.
The GPU temperature reported is fine around 80 degrees at time of crash.
However, I can run 3dmark2006 to my hearts content with no issue and the same with FSX.
I tried lots of different things, endless driver revisions (yes use Driver Cleaner 1st), re-installing games etc to no avail.
Increasing the GPU fan to 100% with Riva-Tuner has no effect but removing the side panel of my computer does result in no problem (strange eh).
Now from what I have read, it is a problem with the memory being overclocked too much at factory.
So as recommended by a poster to another thread, I reduced the factory 2300mhz memory speed down to 2200mhz and now I am running fine.
I have a large Thermaltake case with 4 system fans so cooling is not an issue. Having said that, even if I had no fans the card should still not crash as the product does not specify any special cooling requirements.
Has anyone else with this card experienced the same problem? Is it a driver issue, or a problem with this card that is known about by MSI? Or is the card faulty, should I send it back?
I reported the problem to my reseller after 1 day and they told me they would need the card for 7 days and send it back to MSI if they couldn't find a fault. I am not prepared to do that and if it is not fit for my purposes, shouldn't they offer me an instant refund even if they test it and it works for them. I know for a fact they won't pay someone to sit there playing bf2 for half and hour lol, they will more likely run 3dmark and then tell me card is fine, when it isn't (for me)!

OMG THIS IS EXACTLY THE PROBLEM I HAVE!!
Ok sorry for caps. I have the exact same specs as elmes. I even had the exact same card as him previously x1900xtx from powercolor and it was rock solid for 1.5 years. I got the first MSI 8800 Ultra a couple of weeks ago and I launched EQ2 and lo and behold everything's great until I start seeing a weird black line flash in the middle of the screen every 20-30 seconds. Having had experience with problems like these I knew it was overheating or bad memory on the GPU or so I thought at the time. I have a ThermalTake Armor case with an 80mm fan custom mounted on the side blowing directly at the mobo and CPU, a Zalman 9500 on the CPU blasting the hot air across the case into the back exhaust 80mm, i've got a 40mm at the top of the case blowing the air out, 2 80mm front mounted blowing in and an extra exhaust 40mm in the back and the 80mm fan that comes side mounted on my OCZ GameXStream 700W PSU. So as you can tell the power and cooling is not a problem. Card runs 60c idle and max of 85c during ati tool artifact scan for 5 hours. (bosskiller could you please explain what combined PSU mode is exactly? i've never heard of that either, i have 2 PCI-E cables securely connected to the GPU).
So I launched CoH and same black lines, only worse.  I then went on and downclocked the card to 635/2200 and surely enough all problems went away as far as the black line was concerned. So after poking around the net and ripping out a few hairs on my head for paying so much money for a buggy GPU, i decided to RMA it through Newegg. At the time I thought that maybe the box got damaged being shipped from CA to MA or I just got a bad card...
So I got a brand new 8800 last night, overnighted from NJ in fact. Box in perfect condition and everything inside....
    I launch EQ2.....play for 30 minutes....no black lines...........WOW......n4_disp crash to desktop 5 min later..............
So sure enough I thought ok, don't panic....bad drivers.....uninstalled all of my nvidia drivers (I have an MSI P6N Diamond mobo too btw, had severe problems with software raid, SiL's running well now) and 162.18 release drivers....installed 158.22....same problem.
In an hour, the card started crashing in EQ2 every 5-10 minutes (and this was also at a particularly bad time as I was getting mauled by a lvl 57 epic djinn Al'zheri)....no black lines this time. So off I went and clocked it down to 635/2200 as I had the previous card, all problems vanished. Ran ATI tool artifact scan for overnight....all stable. Played EQ2 for an hour and a half this morning....all stable....
So now I'm certain that MSI 8800 Ultra is clocked too high. In fact go and take a look at the OC settings of other VGA manufacturers, MSI is the highest with the exception of XFX.
So either the QA team at MSI didn't do a proper job or 2 cards shipped from different locations with a 2 week delay in between happened to magically be bad. I'm gonna call Newegg today and see if I can exchange it for another brand.....

  • 8800 Ultra Resolution Problem with Acer AL2616W

    Hey guys,
I'm not entirely sure if this is an nvidia or MSI issue but I wanted to post to see if anybody had any info on it. I have a nice new 8800 Ultra that kicks butt, and I've been using an Acer AL2416W(24in.) on it without any problems. But just today my new Acer AL2616W(26in) arrived and when I hooked it up I noticed the rez will only get as high as 1440x900. The native rez is 1920x1200 but I can't get anywhere near that without the monitor freaking out. I'm trying to set them up as dual monitor but that 26 in will not get any higher than 1440x900. I installed the latest Acer driver for it as well as tried using the driver for the 24in model. but i didn't fair any better.

Make sure your refresh rate stays at 60Hz on the 26incher.
what else could he have done...
Try to swap out the ports between the one that occupies the DVI connector for the AL2416W and the one for AL2616W.
See if that makes any difference at all.
Swap the cables between the monitors too to see if your 24incher freaks out like its bigger brother.
    I hope that helps...

  • Bottom line, does 8800 ultra sli setup ensure better performance ?

greetings all, first time poster here !
anyways, just got my new rig in town the other day, quad core q6600, 4 mg ram, msi 8800 ultra OC, vista 32bit..thing is mad.Have a question tho, putting the already insane performance bar aside, if money isnt an object, would another ultra result in an obvious performance boost, or are we speaking only marginal advantages here, like early slis 6600gt for example, sli setup was only 25/30 percent faster than one card performance.
thanks for every answer in advance
    cheers

so you say, the bigger the resolution the better performance with ultra ?
Well the performance is not better the higher the resolution. The ADVANTAGE compared to a slower card or single card to SLi is higher.

How far can you reckon can this be pushed
Very doubtful it will do 700mhz gpu. At least nobody can tell you what one of those vgas does. It's a matter of the individual sample. You will only find out by testing. But the possibility you kill it that way is very little. If you keep an eye out for the temps and those don't get past 100°C you're fine.
If you set gpu clock too high it will show with artifacts or bluescreens in 3d. So if you lower the clock when experiencing such behavior you won't damage your card. Of course you shouldn't set way too high clocks. I'd recommend not to set any higher than 700mhz unless this proves to be rockstable. Mem clock shouldn't set higher than 2300 but doubtful it will make it.
DON'T TRUST MSI UTILITY! Set clocks manually and check after any step. Many of those GeForce 8 especially oc versions or high end models don't even do stock settings. So best would be checking the card first at stock settings and then starting to oc.

  • 8800 Ultra OC - Symptoms of an unpowered power supply?

I have an 8800 ultra OC and am experiencing some issues.  I am attempting to determine the cause and one of the stick posts says to not under estimate the importance of the power supply.
I upgraded to an Antec trupower trio 650 W thinking that should be sufficient.  However, looking at the specs, it looks like the Amps might not be enough (+3.3@24A,+5V@24A,+12V1@19A,+12V2@19A,+12V3@19A,- [email protected],[email protected] ).
The probelms I am seeing is some textures drop on occasion, leaving big blocks of black.  Other times it is less severe with checkerboarding on certain textures.  It also got to the point where my machine would lock up all together.
I know it is not heat as I have the side of the case removed and a fan blowng directly on the card.  Using Riva Tuner, I never see temps over 75C.
So, could it be the PS not quite putting out enough juice?  The card?  Driver?  Something else?
    Thanks!

Sorry, was in a hurry to post and jumped the gun.
Here are the specs on my system:
    # CPU brand, model and speed: Intel Core 2 Quad @2.4 GHz (Q6600)
    # Motherboard model: Asus Basswood 3G

Do you use latest VGA drivers from Nvidia?  Yes, I am running the 163.75 drivers posted on November 6th (nvidia.com)
Where the issue comes?  It is particularly bad in Gears of War.  Halo 2 also expereinces issues.  There is no particular pattern I can see for when it happens.
Have you connected both power cables to the VGA?  Yes
Yes can be PSU problem, what is max combined amperes @ +12V?  I am not sure where to find this information.  Here are the specs:

I have both the MSI 650i MOBO and the MSI 8800 GTS vidcard. When using an Asus P5B Dlx MOBO and this vidcard, Dual Core Center was installed and displayed the information for the videocard and allowed a mild OC. Now with both MSI products in the case, Dual Core Center only displays the information on the MOBO-- no 8800 GTS information. The tab at the top for the VGA does not bring up anything.  ??? I have tried installing the version on each one of the disks that came with each piece of equipment again and it doesn't seem to make a difference, it doesn't work. I downloaded the most recent version of the utility from the MSI site and still get only the MOBO information. How do I get the display for the video card?
Or since the MSI utilities typically are listed on the forums as not being the greatest, what else can I/should I be using instead?
    {I put this in the MOBO forum too as it hits both areas...}

Found that AtiTool (latest beta) works on the 8800's. The "find max core" and "find max memory" don't work perfectly though, as they start the overclock and then are supposed to check for errors; they are supposed to stop the adjustment upward when they encounter erros and come back down......    AtiTool just kept cranking it up, although you could visibly see the little 3D screen artifact all over the place. But It gave a good starting place to do the OC manually and then go run the scan for artifacts and errors manually.  AtiTool listed the stock core at 513 and stock memory at 792. I was able to take the core up to ~644 and the memory up to ~877. I backed these off some (as you can't run both at max!) and it looked stable at 630 core, 860 memory.  Ran through both 3DMark 05 and 3DMark06 without a hitch. Need to check it out with some extended gameplay now.

    And the Software:
I've updated all the software drivers so I've got the newest and I'm currently runnign Win2k SP3 with almost every patch installed on it.
    And finally the problem:
When I've hook my WD2000JB to the on-board raid everything seems to be working normaly. The bios finds the drive and makes a new array. Win2k boots up and finds the drive and I can create an partition. But when I've try to format it it the computer starts to freeze for a while and then acts like normal again. The HDD-led blinks as it should during the "normal" time, but when the comp. freezes it stops blinking. The formatation stops at 7% and the HDD-led stops lighting. I don't get an error eventhough it was several hours since it stoped. And the formatation takes like 30min for 1%.
When I connect the WD2000JB to the IDE3 I can format it and it acts just like normal. I even did a full system test with the System tool found on Western Digitals support site and it didn't find any errors. But when move it to the raid-IDE the errors return. I've get Error reading / writing to disk and when I've did a chkdsk I've got the "Coudn't use Device) so I did a scandisk and it found very very many errors so it completly ereased everything that was on it.
And when I've run Western Digitals program again i've get an error (Disk error read/writing) error code: 0113.
Can it be that the Western Disk doesn't work well with Raid? I've haven't heard anything about that, so...

I've had similar problems where my system becomes very unstable at higher bus speeds. Installing Windows XP simply didn't work very good. However, I have ordered a new PSU today as a solution to this problem. Basically, CPUs and video cards are much more demanding and the more devices you have in your computer the more power you're going to need. I recommend purchasing the Enermax EG465P-VE (FCA) 450W ATX PS. It has a higher amperage rating and will most likely solve your problem.
Check your PSU and your bus speed settings...

bas is correct.  an ARU and non ARu are going to function the same and perfrom pretty much the same
Im just posting in addition to what Bas said since I have both the KT3 Ultra and KT3 Ultra ARU and I can tell you from personal experience they perform identically
    =======================================
The only rant I have about the ARU is the ARU has that ugly uneeded and crappy fan on the northbrdige....LOL I really like the non ARU without the fan better.  The orange heatsink on the nonARU is more than enough to cool the NB even when overclocking.  The KT333CE chip is well designed and doesnt get that hot by its very nature.  So that darn cheapy fan is just for looks and serves no functional purpose on this chipset.
And best of all with the non ARU - the orange heatsink makes no noise and has no moving parts to break down
( :D ok done with my rant.  Seems everyday I have to tell how I hate that silly silver fan  lol :D )

    Hi,
I have a KT3 Ultra ARU too, and I understand that if you use the onboard Bluetooth connection you must not use the USB connection under the blue sticker at the same time.
I think it's because the onboard Bluetooth connection and the USB connection under the sticker use the same adress (IRQ). So as long as you have no Bluetooth, like me, you can use the 4 USB connections. If you use Bluetooth connection on board, do not use the USB connection under the sticker (the left one seen from backside of your PC).
If you use an external Bluetooth it's not a problem with your 4 USB connections.

  • PSU Query for MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU running 3000xp

    Hi There,
Before buying a new Motherboard I was just wondering if the problems I'm getting are related to the PSU which is about 5 years old. I've just upgraded my processor to a Athlon 3000 XP 333 FSB which goes into the MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU (MS-6380E v1.X) motherbaord, which I've upgraded the Bios to version 5.7, I've also  upgraded my graphics card to the Leadtek Geforce FX5900XT which also plugs into the PSU. When setting my fsb to 166 my PC either won't boot or when I try to run say 3DMark it just freezes, but when I set my FSB to 133 it works fine. I was wondering if it is trying to draw too much power from the CPU.
I don't really know how to write the PSU details down correctly so I've just copied everything from the unit.
