MSI 890FXA-GD70 w/ 2xIntel 510 120GB in RAID 0 on Locks up and BSOD

I am getting hard lockups and BSOD from the following
OS: Win7x64
MB: MSI 890FXA-GD70 w/ latest BIOS
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1100T
HD: 2xIntel SSD 520 120GB SSD RAID 0
VID: ATI FirePro V4800
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1600 F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL
I have swapped power supplies. I have swapped identical RAM. I have swapped video cards. I have used Ultimate Boot CD to run Memtest and other stress tests and everything passes with flying colors. BIOS is loaded with defaults fail safe. RAID array is created using all defaults for a RAID 0. Everything points to SSD firmware or other issues. Maybe RAID 0 with 2 Intel 510's using a AMD SB850 is not supported? Firmware versions on the 510's are both PPG4 which is the latest. Am I doing something wrong? Anyone have any ideas? I am very disappointed that that I can not get my RAID 0 stable. BTW I am doing no overclocking etc. Hardware and errors follow. Thanks!

Thanks for the help! It is appreciated. Power supply is Antec 380W. I have tried swapping out with identical one - both were brand new and I have had pretty good luck with Antec in the past so I kind of doubt that's it. Wish it was so easy! The machine is on a good line interactive UPS as well so power fluctuations are not causing this.
I am using the hardware RAID on the SB850 - it requires loading the latest driver from USB during installation. But prior to that it requires a Ctrl-F and into the RAID setup. I choose RAID 0 and then select both Intel 510 120GB SATA III. The two SSD have the exact same firmware which is the latest per Intel Website.
Drivers are the latest for Win7x64 from here:

No one has been able to solve it yet. Seems like MSI and Intel are both good companies but these products are not compatible in the configuration I am attempting.

I have a few questions to which someone would probably know off-hand the answers to, so here goes:
1. I purchased the MSI 890FXA-GD70 along with an AMD Phenom X6 1090T BE CPU and need some recommendations on which 8GB (2 x 4) memory kit to purchase. This will be used with a 64 bit OS (Win 7/Linux) and would like to slightly overclock the memory (IF NEEDED) to reach a CPU speed of 4.5GHz. I would prefer Patriot, Corsair or Gskill DDR3 10666 or higher...whatever would do the job.
2. This question involves downloading and installing the Catylist drivers for the motherboard. I DO NOT use an ATI/AMD GPU, but rather a nVidia 580 Reference board, so I am under the assumption that I DO NOT need to download any of the catalyst drivers EXCEPT the following:
AHCI
SB Driver
RAID
Those are directly related to everything BUT the GPU...if I am wrong, please correct me. For the following components, I usually go to the individual manufactures web-site to download drivers:
RealTek LAN: RTL-8111DL PCI-E LAN Driver - v7.034 - 2010-DEC-22
IEEE 1394: From VIA - VT6315N
Realtek Audio: From Realtek ALC889/ALC892
USB 3.0: From NEC
I have not yet installed the mobo yet as I am awaiting for memory suggestions, thus I am grabbing all the absolute latest drivers for my system beforehand.
I just downloaded the RTM SP1 for Win 7 64 file and addition to that, wish to merge (slipstream) the above drivers into the Win 7 OEM DVD so I have everything ready to go.
3. In regards to AHCI, do I or can I use that with a fresh install of Win 7 or is AHCI reserved for those with SSD's ? I know I can use AHCI via Linux which I do on several other boxes, however, I am not sure about Windows 7 64.
I suppose that wraps it up. All this is replacing my DFI LanParty 790FXB-M2RSH board in which I fell in love with, however, DFI is not supporting/making that line of boards again, so my choice was between MSI and Gigabyte. Obviously, you can tell who won.
If there is anything I should be 'prepaired' for (e.g. bugs, troubles, etc.) feel free to post the information.

The following kit is in use by some of the forum members and it performs exemplary in all instances. Although being a 1333 it will OC to 1600 at 1,5V. Your analysis is quite correct. Insert your GPU card before your windows installation. Once the installation is complete you can then install the latest NVidia drivers, or start with the ones that shipped with your GPU.

Initially start with only one mem module, single optical drive, single HDD and GPU card. Ideally do ar barebones build outside the case on a non-conducting surface. Get everything up and running, and then transfer everything to the case. Test if all is still normal, and then start to add the other copmponents, ie. 2nd mem module, HDDs, etc.

I had everything working for 8 months or so then everything suddenly went bonkers....my cpu wouldn't start up. I replaced my PSU and took everything apart and I had it working outside of my case for 2 weeks and then it decided not to start up again.....I resat all components with no luck.
I RMA'd my motherboard to MSI and had it swapped out. Now....I went to reseat everything and like an idiot; I had spilled excess arctic silver 5 onto the mainboard socket and the PCU. I cleaned everything best I could without any solution and tried to start it up; CODE FF (only using 1 stick of ram and video card).
I did some reading and picked up some loctite electrical cleaner http://www.rshughes.com/products/079340_1174633.html
and cleaned everything out. I used a fine brush to clean out the socket.
Now; I installed pcu; heat sink; 1 stick ram (tried all slots) video card. I also made sure my power connections were hooked up---pcu and mainboard---I still get a code FF immediately..no post; nothing. Every time it goes to code FF and nothing else. Fans run and the all lights on the motherboard light up...the PCU lights are on as well. (all 4)
I've tried every solution I've read on this board and whatever google could find for me....my questions is (sorry for long story); should I just replace my PCU and motherboard as I messed it up with the arctic 5?

MSI 890FXA-GD70 AM3 - Hard Drive in Sata Port 6 Not recognized in WIN7-[SOLVED]

I just bought this motherboard (MSI 890FXA-GD70 AM3), new memory, case and processor. I love it. But while I can put something together, I do not consider myself much more then an experienced novice.
Anyway, I bought a 5th hard drive and plugged it into SATA connector 6. Connector 5 remains unused. The new hard drive is recognized when the BIOS boots, but in Windows 7, I only show the first 4 drives like always. I just want to use this drive as a 5th hard drive for normal use and storage.
I went into the BIOS to see if there was a setting I was missing; read through the posts to see if I could find the answer; and prayed to GOD, but nothing has worked! I have found nothing on this topic, but then the FORUM is hard to navigate after a while with people not carefully choosing their topic subject name. (Why do people sometimes post - I HAVE A PROBLEM - without anything in the SUBJECT line to help the casual reader know what they are asking about?) My searches were fruitless, but then I know the key to a good search is using the right keywords.
I know this is going to turn out to be a simple setting, but can you help? Thanks in advance! And when the solution is presented, I will post back that ALL IS WELL!

PROBLEM SOLVED! Found it myself through careful research.

Apparently, because I had IDE and not AHCI enabled in the BIOS, only the first 4 ports were being identified. AND because I had not not changed the BIOS to AHCI before the installation of Windows 7, NO obvious way to change the setting AFTERWARDS!
In part what the post link above states:
AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) enables native command queuing and hot-plugging through SATA host controllers (Serial-ATA) for your hard drives. In many scenarios it enables more efficient multi-tasking. Vista was the first Windows OS to support AHCI out of the box, where as Windows 7 does the same. But an issue with AHCI is that if you install the OS without enabling AHCI in the BIOS, enabling it after installation will render your OS unusable. This is because Windows disable the AHCI driver since it is not needed during the installation.
There is one way to fix this, although you need to have knowledge of registry editing. The detailed steps from Microsoft are as follows:
To resolve this issue, enable the AHCI driver in the registry before you change the SATA mode of the boot drive. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Exit all Windows-based programs.
2. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
3. If you receive the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
4. Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlS etServicesMsahci
5. In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.
6. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
7. On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.
After this you’ll have to restart your computer, go to BIOS and enable AHCI. When you log in to Windows again, you’ll notice the installation of drivers for AHCI. Another restart will be required to finish the driver installation.
I had been trying to select something in the BIOS other then IDE (choices are IDE, AHCI and RAID) to see if that would result in my 5th drive being recognized, but when I selected AHCI or RAID, the OS would flash the EVIL blue screen before it completed booting into Window 7.
I copied the instructions here in case the link gets disabled in the future. This link explained why I was having the problem I was having and how to solve it.

Oh Gosh,,,, MSI 890FXA-GD70 4 x 5830,, Was working fine,,, out of nowhere KABOOM

No it didn't blow up but now I can only get two cards working on this board. I have tested it on another power supply.
Am I missing something that isn't allowing me to use all the lanes? It was working fine under windows 7 x64 for a while until it crashed and wouldn't show all cards after boot up...
Has anyone had a similar problem?
I am still under warranty and have initiated an RMA but really don't want to go without the board for 2+ weeks.

I have numerous 890FXA-GD70 boards and they can run 4 or 5 cards without issue.... 5 cards when using the 1x slot with a PCIE 1x to 16x Riser cable.
The rig in question has Identical Sapphire Xtreme 5830's.... After a BSOD (unknown) when windows rebooted the cards were missing from device manager.. Tried changing the order or even running 3 cards instead of 4... All these GPU's have been tested in a different machine... They all work fine.
All extras in the bios have been turned off, eg. Sound, Lan controllers and so on...
Bios updated default settings set.... I even tried seating the cards differently in to the board....

I've been reading other forums.. i tried many steps clear bios, remove battery, change the shunt (I also disconnected the PSU cable before these steps)\\\\\\ re-lap CPU 2 times, boot on 1 stick DIMM1 slot to fix my problem.. everything started today in the morning.. i can say my pc is new..i build it about 2 days ago everything was working fine this morning i tried turning it on and i kept on getting the "ff" code.. i dont want to return this motherboard i barely have 5 days

That mat may have killed it when you tried to power it.
I would RMA the board in this case and never ever power it again on such a mat.

MSI 890FXA-GD70 and 3Ware 9750-4i BIOS issues

This is my second build with this motherboard. This post is just to help anyone who might be trying to get similar hardware combinations to work.
The BIOS revision is 1.7, which was the revision the board came with.
When running with a 3Ware 9750-4i board you will find that the 3Ware BIOS will complain about not being able to install. At first it was complaining about the motherboard BIS not providing enough RAM to live in, but after I set the on-board SATA controller to AHCI is stopped complaining and just didn't show up at all.
Now, don't be discouraged if you aren't booting from the 3Ware controller, because this won't stop it from working. When the OS loads the driver, everything is fine.
I suspect it would also work if you completely disabled the on-board controller, but that wasn't an option for me. I wanted to run three additional HDs and two optical drives on that controller, as well as the four drives on the 3Ware.
I kept experimenting with slot positions for the cards, but nothing produced a change at all.
Finally I spent time in the OS trying to make the AHCI drivers for the on-board controller work with connect/disconnect. There appeared no way in Win7 x64 to get any AHCI drivers to load but the default Microsoft ones, which don't support hot-swap or even connect/disconnect.
It appeared to me that the only AHCI drivers supplied by AMD or MSI specifically work only when the controller is in RAID mode. So I tried setting the controller to RAID mode in the BIOS, and discovered that it now played nice with the 3Ware BIOS. Now I am going to reinstall Windows 7 with the 3Ware drivers and select a 3Ware drive to boot from, to see if I can get the AMD or MSI-supplied drivers to work with the on-board controller. I suspect I will get all the features promised then. If I don't, I will return here and report the results.

I completed the new install of Win7 - this time with the 3ware controller as the primary, and the on-board SATA set to RAID.
First, I had to load drivers for the on-board RAID during the install, just to let the install continue. Then I had to load drivers to tell Win7 about the drive where I wanted to install. I thought it would ask for both up front, but it wouldn't take both - it only wanted the drivers for the controller to which the DVD was connected. THEN, after it was ready to ask for a location for the install, it let me put the 3ware drivers up.
Once the system was loaded, I was disappointed to find that none of the on-board RAID drives showed up in the add/remove dialog, but I was able to use a utility to make them work with hot-swapping. It is called Hotswap!

and it allowed me to connect/disconnect drives plugged into the on-board controller housed in the Thermaltake MAX-2533.
With the settings like that, the BIOS issues disappear, with both the on-board RAID and the 3ware co-existing nicely. This indicates to me that there is likely something wrong with the standard AHCI BIOS-related screen that makes the 3ware controller unhappy. I doubt the 3ware is the only BIOS-installing card to feel that way, so if you have your drives set to AHCI, but have issues with any other cards, you might look into setting the drives to RAID or to IDE (though you lose some features like NCQ)
I also forgot to mention that I also have a four-port PCI-Express NIC from Intel in the system, so I have updated the system summary below:

Msi 890fxa-gd70 posting problems

the problem started after i installed a new thermaltake frio cpu cooler, i installed it outside of the case on the box the motherboard came in. I get the splash screen but the keyboard wont respond and hangs at code 38 with a usb mouse and keyboard and one sata Hdd & dvd drive plugged in. if i remove the mouse and keyboard it goes to code 78 and hangs. if i remove the hdd & dvd drive it cycles through and tells me i have no boot device. i have tried different combinations and tryed moving the ram around, just 1 stick!. i have tried clearing the cmos throughout doing the different combinations. I have tried all the different sata ports for just the hdd, and i have tried all the different usb ports to try to get the keyboard to register, i did also try another known working usb keyboard. this motherboard has never been OC'ed this is a custom build computer for a friend so i only have limited time to keep messing around with combinations of hardware. the ram is tested and i also tried using one of my sticks from my rig with no luck. so here is the specs

this rig was working perfect for 2 weeks before i tried to install the new HS, i already checked the pins on the cpu to make sure that i didnt damaged it. i always practice safe ESD rules and was wearing my bracelet. i was very careful when installing the new cooler and made sure it wasn't too tight of a fit, i have already done this before on my rig same mobo, cpu and cooler and had no problems with it. I am stuck in a corner and I am hoping to find some help out... Any suggestions? Please and Thank You in advance

i have tried that also, the main problem is that i cant get it past code 38 with an usb keyboard in it so that i can enter the bios. i can get it to cycle through and not hang, but that is without any keyboard or Hdd so im back at square one. i still need to try an PS/2 keyboard but finding one is actually harder than i thought it would be. this board hasn't have a bios update, it came with 1.6 already on it. its not even an month old yet. but thank you for an possible answer to this dilemma.

MSI 890FXA-GD70 temperatures issue

I carefully read those topics where there are problems with the motherboard specified, to find an answer to my problems but were not advertised until now.
These are:
A. JMicron controller temperature is very high, very hot to the touch (I use an ATA100 HDD WDC);
Two. any USB storage temperature is very high since its introduction in USB ports.
I mention that I had these problems right from the start.
However, I managed some good results enough Ock (CPUz @ 3900 MHz FSB @ 296MHz) to realize that my motherboard properly respond to tasks.
If the first problem concerns me in terms of overclocking that I am going to apply it (although tensions on the controller are not affected directly), the second issue is worrying because I have never met before on other boards.
My configuration is on MSI benchtable :
CPU: AMD Sempron 140 (or Athlon X2 4400 after ock) with Thermaltake Frio
MB: MSI 890FXA-GD70, latest BIOS (v1.13)
RAM: ADATA 1600G 4GB @ 1333MHz, CL 9-9-9-24
HDD: WDC 80GB ATA 100
GPU: Asus 2400 Pro
PSU: Codegen 400W.

he is right! without exact heat levels its not possible from just saying something is getting hot to determin if something is wrong without actual data of any kind (heat or there power draw).
it might be that the other system you tested the devices on couldnt supply enougth ampage to the devices so the usb devices in question would just bottleneck there speed staying very cool as its running slower! usb 3.0 devices tend to pull more then an old style usb2.0 device but pull a lower ampage by restricting there speed to funcion without erroring data in a lower ampage port!
the heat may just be a byproduct of running at there native speed with no ristrictions placed on them! without a comparable system capable of loading the device at its maximum load it can draw its hard to say for sure if anything is wrong at all (just doesnt sound normal if your other system is capable of pushing maximum load into them)!

MSI 890FXA-GD70 sleep mode

Hello All
My new setup has been running fine for 2 weeks now, there is just one thing that annoys me:
Whenever i put the system into sleep mode, the coolingfan of the GFX card will start spinning at max rpm (and won't stop!)
Besides this the sleepmode seems to be working fine, also waking the machine up again goes ok.
Have tried to change some settings in the bios but until now with no luck.
OS: Windows 7 64 Premium (NL)
using latest bios (1.6) for the MSI 890FXA-GD70
videocard MSI N250GTS-2D1G with bios 62.92.7D.00.11
Have selected following Energy items in the bios:
ACPI: enabled
ACPI state: S1
Eup2013: disabled
For the rest of my specs see signature...
Anyone some ideas how to solve this ?

Similar symptom, different components, but similar solution. I jumped the gun and reinstalled the OS, and video drivers, etc... I suspected it was a driver issue, but only after I formated and started over. With only one BFG GTX 275oc in, it never happened, but with the 2nd one in, and SLI enabled, the monitor would go black at random times, though the computer was still running, and I could tell it to shut down without having to pull the plug.

Hey Everyone -
I picked up the following to make a 2nd gaming rig:
AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4GHz
MSI 890FXA-GD70
DDR3 Corsair 1333MHz 4GB
DDR3 Kingston 1333MHz 2x4GB (Bought this thinking the Corsair was bad - using them separately - not together..)
I already have video cards/Harddrive/psu (1000w) that I know work.
I have 2 issues with the new motherboard (MSI 890FXA-GD70).
1) I can only power up the motherboard if I unplug the ATX 8-pin while the ATX-24 pin is plugged in.
a) while running like this I get the famous flashing "FF" code.
2) If I have the ATX 24/8 Pin plugged in - it seems to have a slight hiccup of power and then nothing happens (except 2 blue phase lights for the RAM stay lit)
a) I've tried switching RAM around with multiple combination (single/duel etc) in all DIMM slots (1-4)
a noobie question:
Am I getting the FF code - because that 8 pin is not functioning properly?
Just to note - ive also triple checked the CPU to make sure pins were not bent/placed wrong etc...

You tried everything you could in my book, yes I agree RMA the board.
8 pin must be connected else the CPU doesn't get power.
However, it could also be the CPU that's broken, best to RMA both, board and CPU.

( MSI 890FXA-GD70 Mainboard), (Win7 64Bit ) CPU (AMD Phenom(TM) II X6 1090T Processor (6C, 3.62GHz, 2GHz IMC, 6x 512kB L2, 6MB L3) to allows 3 or 4 DVI monitors to be used in Eyefinity without needing a DisplayPort monitor or active adapter ???? to play microsoft flight simulator X for example on 3 LCD ???

Also Eyefinity is AMD feature, Nvidia cards doesn't have such.

MSI 890FXA-GD70 - MB not booting with 8 pin power connected

current setup is:
MSI 890FXA-GD70
CORSAIR Professional Series AX1200 1200W ATX12V v2.31
AMD Phenom II X4 975 Black Edition Deneb 3.6GHz 4 x 512KB
CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) (Currently 1 stick only in DIMM 1)
When i try booting the MB with both the 24 pin and 8 pin connectors in place, the power led flashes once and i get a click out of my power supply.
When i remove the 8 pin, the MB boots as normal. I've verified there are no extra spacers behind the board, and I have tried 2 different 8 pin cords, both were seated properly in the PSU and the MB.
I'm continuing to look back in the forums, just not seeing a solution. any ideas?

Oh, now I see the light! Only use the 4-pins - of the 8 - towards the top. The other 4 are covered normally.

MSI 890FXA-GD70 issues

I recently received my MSI 890FXA-GD70 and am having a few problems.
Firstly if I enable C1E in the bios the computer reboots as soon as it enters windows(short glimpse of desktop). This occurs in safemode aswell.
I have tried many different combinations of disabling turbo core and cool&quiet etc but it made no difference.
This occurs on stock settings even when loading defaults in bios.
Secondly I have Apacer Giant II 2x 2GB DDR3 240-Pin DIMM, 1.65V [PC17600].
This ram can apparently run 2200MHz with 10-10-10-30 2T timings.
If I overclock slightly and set the RAM ratio to highest ratio then the system will not post and normally requires me using the cmos reset jumper. The ram speed is normally around 1900MHz at the overclock I desire. I have the above timings in place and have set the DRAM voltage to 1.65V
From what I can tell the motherboard is supposed to be able to run 2133MHz.
If I simply lower the multiplier so that the ram is running close to 1333MHz no issues.
Am I doing something wrong when it comes to running the ram at higher clock speeds?
I read somewhere that I should increase the CPU-NB voltage. I set this to one below red and I currently have the ram running at 1712MHz with 10-10-10-29 1T.
I am not sure what is safe here, but I do have pretty good flow in my case.
It seems that increasing this voltage must be necessary, but I would like someone elses opinion if possible.

For all the other timings I was just pressing enter and changing it like that.
As for the C1E thing, even when its stock standard doesn't seem to work. It doesn't really bother me though.
Seems like the cool and quiet is clocking down the cpu anyway.
Is there anyway to test the turbo core easily, seems sort of random when it decides it will activate it.
I tried running prime on only 2 cores but it splits the load over all 6.
Any ideas of the ram speed. It should be able to run at least 1800+.
Any specific voltages I should increase?
Also when overclocking I have disabled the cpu phase control and left the ddr phase on, as I am not adding any extra voltage to the ram.
Not sure if this is correct, but if I clock to 4GHz with 1.377V then ControlCenter reports about 240W when under full load with Prime.

MSI 890FXA-GD70 starting problem

I just got a new MSI 890FXA-GD70 and after all is plugged in and when i start the computer all the fans start but the bios doest show up. The strange thing is that most of the leds turn on (CPU Phase leds all light up and stay on, the DDR phase lights up and stay on) BUT, and this is the strangest part, the diagnostics display on the board doest even turn on. There is also no sound noises of any kind and I'm 99% sure i plug the speaker right.
I even started the board having no RAM and no HD to see if "anything" happened but always the same. Leds light up and stay on but nothing else. I'm using a CORSAIR AX1200 1200W for power. The CPU is an AMD Sempron 140.
This is also a good time to tell this is the first time i try to build a computer so any rookie mistakes i could have made, like something i forgot to plug, or any jumpers you can point and laugh
Any ideas??

I have not! But it's going to be the first thing i will do as soon i get home. Like i said on top, i just find it odd the fact the leds light up and the diagnostics display doest turn on. If it's a shorting issue any chance i could have fried the board? Or that's is just some safety "thing"?
