MSI 965 Platinum probl.?

Hey all!
I have MSI 965 Platinum
e6600
8800gts 320
4x1gb ram 800mhz
2x maxtor 200gb + 2x seagate 320 gb
600W power supply
I tryed to overclock e6600 and my comp started to beeping @ FSB speed of 300mhz. After that i am unable to overclock anything!
When i try to overclock eather cpu or ram my computer shuts down, or start to rotate coolers, but without signal on monitor. only CMOS reseting helps!
Now i am having slightly problems on my OS! (i returned everything to
When windows starts, i am unable to do anything for a few min (it's like cpu is sleeping or doing something else but silently). Everything seems to be fine only first time after CMOS reset!
I thought that maybe reducing bios from v1.3 to 1.2 might help... (if anyone knows how to reduce it please post me detailed guide.  thanks)
Any advice will be great!!

well...
I have stock fan on cpu, but i have Chieftec medium tower bravo 02 case. it has a lot of little holes on sides! i have additional 12cm fan on back, i also have 4x cooler master cooper heatspreader for memory module, and 4x coolers for hdd's...
here are volts and temps from BIOS
CPU temp - 33-34c
system temp- 31-32
CPU fan speed - 1800 RPM
NB fan speed - 1216 RPM
CPU vcore - 1288-1296v
+5vsb  -  5.129v
+5.0v  -  5.045v
+12.0v  -  11.880v
+3.3v  -  3.344v
Btw my win is now corrupted...
When i try to install any game i get this message :
"An error (-5009 : 0x8002802b) has occurred while running the setup.
Please make sure you have finished any previous setup and closed other applications.
If the error occurs, please contact your vendor:(name of game vendor)."
I will try to set RAM to 2.3v tonight, i didn't have time to reset cmod if win won't start....

Windows Vista 64 Ultimate SP1 & Windows XP SP3 on dual boot.
Ok now thats out the way, basically what I need to know is a walk through for this motherboard to JUST overclock the CPU to about 3GHz per core and was wondering what BIOS settings need to be enabled/disabled to effect this properly...I don't want to overclock ram or voltages though.

Ok I've pretty much sorted what I needed to know....got it stable up to 3.6ghz (400FSB) and the ram at 800mhz, posted fine although bit twitchy without messing with voltages....maybe sort that out another time as this was merely an experment to see how far it could go...overall very impressed at being able to even reach a 50% overclock on air cooling  ...anyway reset everything back to defaults now.

  • MSI 965 Platinum and E6700 Core2. HELP

My problem is this. I just got a MSI 965 platinum and a E6700 CPU.
But when i check the little apps called CPU-Z then i can se my multiplier is only at 6x instead og 10x as default and core speed around 1600Ghz. I think its called (EIST) ?? or something.
I did turn of the 3 thing in BIOS setup. Spread Spectrum, Speedsteep and the vanderpool. I tought that would keep my CPU running at full speed all time. But it dosent. Its still in auto mode (EIST) i can see in CPUZ
I need some help here please. I dont want to use that processor cycling auto mode, i want it at 2.66Ghz all time.
Is that posible with this combination ?  Can anybody help her please.
    thx

Some topics you should read/scroll through first, as they contain useful info on what issues this board has using the current BIOS:

Overclocking on this board right now is just highly irregular, you can't tell what you are going to get. We will have to wait for a new BIOS release...
Like the rest of us, your choice in motherboards has been unlucky. Hopefully a new BIOS release will help overclocking.
What seems to be your maximum FSB right now?

  • Is MSI 965 Platinum compatible with Thermalright SI 120?

I already have the Thermalright SI 120 heatsink and I plan to buy the 965 Platinum. I need to know first that my cpu cooler is compatible with the board.
    Does anyone has those two?

  • MSI 965 Platinum slow dvd drive access - is it a Jmicron issue

I am having a bit  a problem. I just built this system and installed windows xp sp2 without a single hitch. However while I was installing various drivers and such for the components I noticed that the DVD ROM was slow to respond. The hard drive is under SATA #1 and the DVD ROM is in the only ide port on the board. When I installed windows and the subsequent MSI drivers disk I did not tell it to install any jmicron drivers what so ever. I was wondering what is the proper set up for this configuration ie. bios setting and should I install any of the jmicron drivers and which jmicron drivers to install. I do not care about having any RAID functionality.
    Thanks

Let me clarify this situation a little more. Like I said earlier I just build this system and did not have any problems installing windows xp. I do not recall exactly which bios setting I changed so my IDE DVD-RW drive was recognized but the setting had something to do with raid/ide/disable. I think. Anyhow, upon boot up it recognized my IDE DVD-RW drive and correctly booted the windows xp sp2 cd. I went through the setup menu for xp and created one large partition. It recognized my SATA drive as being 230 or 240 GB when in actuality it is a 250. No problem with me. I formated the HD. It took about an hour to format the whole drive. Next, it loaded windows xp which took about 15 minutes or so. When the OS started I used the included MSI disk to load the network, intel and sound drivers. I did not choose to load the jmicron driver because of the horror stories I have read. After I loaded the MSI drivers I installed my video card driver and monitor driver/software. It was when it started to install the video card driver that I noticed the drive acting a little weird. By weird I mean slow access and it was giving me an when it would try to "autoplay" the EVGA driver disk. Anyhow, eventually it started and I was able to install the video card drivers. After everything loaded I decided to load a few CD's. Mostly data and music CDs. On some of the data cd's the access times seemed slow. Like 10 - 15 seconds for xp to negotiate with the DVD drive. So, I thought there must be a connection with not installing the Jmicron drivers. However, my system is incredibly stable. It has not had one hiccup. I even installed NWN2 and played it for several hours without any issues. Since this is my first SATA drive I do not know what the devise manager is supposed to look like. Nor did I really know what to exaclty set the bios at the get the best performance and stability from the system. When I look in the device manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers there are several items listed in this order
    Intel(R) ICH8 2 port Serial ATA Controller - 2825
    Intel(R) ICH8 2 port Serial ATA Controller - 2820
    Primary IDE Channel
    Primary IDE Channel
    Primary IDE Channel
    Secondary IDE Channel
    Secondary IDE Channel
    Secondary IDE Channel
Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller
    My questions/concerns are as follows.
What are the proper settings in the bios for a SATA HD connected to one of the six SATA port (not JMicron) and a IDE DVD-RW connected to the IDE Jmicron port?
Do you have to install the Jmicron drivers for the IDE port and if so will it compromise the stability of the system?
Which Jmicron driver do I install? ( I don't know if there is more than one just asking incase there are different ones)
Is this the way the device manage is supposed to look? (see above)

  • MSI 965 Platinum - System turns off instantly

    Hi!
My problem is, that sometimes the system runs for hours and then turns off. Sometimes I can turn it on after some minutes, sometimes I need to wait some hours. Either it works then for hours again, or it turns off after 1-60 seconds. May it be the same problem?
I rebuild the system 3 times, checked the system temperature in bios (CPU=30°C, System=25°C), connected all 3 Powerconnectors, set up the RAM power to 2.0V@FSB800.. I don't know what I should try next.

    Thank you for your replies!
    @Bas:
    1. Which magazines are able to test PSUs in your opinion and which mistakes are made by the most other magazines?
    2. The link I posted gives more information than the peak values:
    Max.(Amps): +3.3V=25A +5V=25A +12V1=18A +12V2=18A
    combined +12V: 36A/432W (peak 38A)
Maybe you are right and there is a problem with the PSU but the stats seem to be OK in my eyes
    @piyo:
I did all I can imagine to analyze the defect part. Booting the system with CPU installed only (of cause with cooler ) and checked the D-bracket. plugged in the memory, plugged in the Gfx card with D-bracket check and so on. The system runs stable when I turned on the system with half ram, setup a VDIMM of 2.0V. Now I checked the 1024MB memory with memtest86 for 20 minutes, then I ran the system with 2048MB memory and tested 20 minutes with memtest86. After the system passed this 40 minutes test I installed my OC successfull and the system runs fine for 2 days. On last sunday evening it shuts down again and I was unable to start it stable.
I made a bios reset, started with 1024MB memory set up the VDIMM again to 2.0V (tried it with 2.1V too) but when I start memtest86 again the system turns of after max. 5 minutes.
Because I have to wait longer (5 minutes - some hours) until I can start the system again I thought it could be the temperature but I checked the temp. in bios till the system turns off and it never got higher then 30°C! Another strange thing is that I can turn on the system sometimes by pressing the powerbutton for longer time

    Hi everyone,
Can someone tell me if the MSI 965 Platinum board would work with the

I need to know ASAP because I am getting the board and cpu in the next
    4 days.

The E6300 and E6400 have 4 meg L2 but Intel only enables 2 Meg of it if I understand correctly.
Yes, but even so, the E6320 / E6420 will come with a new CPUID wich should be supported by bios to be sure of no problems. Better to wait and make sure its supported when the tests are completed.

  • Fastest Core 2 Duo or Quad for 965 Platinum?

    I've got a 965 Platinum running an e6700 core 2 duo with 4GB of 800 MHz memory....
I'll be going to to Windows 7 64-bit and since I'm using Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom I'd like to put in more horsepower and memory.  I looked at the CPU compatibility chart at MSI and it seems to think the fastest Core 2 Duo is an e8500 and and quad is a q9550.  BUT, I noticed the quad still shows the old C1 stepping (which I thought had
been changed last August) so I'm wondering how out-of-date the chart is?
Can someone tell me what I can upgrade to, what kind of performance improvement I'm likely to see - is the quad significantly better than the duo (if known), and any gotcha's I need to be aware of?
    Also, the specs say
    Main Memory
    • Supports up to 8GB memory size (DDRII 533/667).
    • Supports up to 4GB memory size (DDRII 800).
    • Supports dual channel DDRII memory architecture.
    • Supports DDR2 533/667/800 memory interface.
Does this motherboard actually support memory running at 1066 or not?  I was thinking of putting in 8GB of PC8500, DDR2 memory running at 1066 MHz.....  Will this motherboard support the memory or does it really top out at 4GB at 800 MHz?

Its a bit old, yes, so buying a new Q9550 is a gamble, like you already noticed.
Search this forum, maybe someone got it to work and maybe MSI has a betabios to get it running, but i cant tell you for sure.
However a C2D will do nicely in most situations, I dont know what you are using for programs, but it depends on the software if its multithreaded and thus use all cores.
If most of your software is single threaded, or doesnt benefit from more then 2 cores, a C2D will do just fine.

Nope, like charts says, only 667/800MHz.
And yes it tops out at 4GB @800MHz, remember its an "old" chipset.

  • 965 Platinum - Memory issues

For some strangely odd reason my 965 platinum board does not read memory placed in dimm slots 1 and 2, but only reads memory in slots 3 /4
    Non oc'd
I originally used  G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory  which worked fine since Friday in slots 1 and 3 then out of the blue my computer just decided to not boot anymore.  After trouble shooting every component inside the CPU in another system, It seems that the memory has failed.  So I purchase a cheap 1g kingston ddr2 533 stick to be sure.  I have the same problems trying to boot with the memory in dimm slots 1 and 2 but the kingston stick boots when in slots 3 and 4.
Is it possible that 2 memory slots could be damaged on my motherboard without effecting the others?
Since I Rma'd the g.skill memory when the new sticks come in could they work in slots 3/4?
Why won't the 1g kingston stick work in slots 1/2?
How can I troubleshoot possible dmg dimm slot?
    My system specs are:
    650w Antec trio
    e6600 - stock cooling
    Geforce 7600gt
    thermaltake soprano case
    3x Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320g - Raid 0
    G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
    MSI P965 platinum

Well, the only way to test is to get 2 sets of different RAMs to test out slot 1 and 2. If both RAMs are not detected, then I would recommend to RMA the board.
The damages may be due to shortings within the board. I would suggest that you check the contacts between the board and the chassis, especially the standoffs.

i just installed the p965 platinum today along with 1gb of corsair xms ram and a allendale e6300.

the code it gives for this is shown here
anyone got an idea what it could be, im asuming it means the pci bus is the problem. ive tried taking out my tv card, disabling the network port as thats on the pci-e bus and ive also tried my graphics card in the other pci-e slot. i cant take the card out as i have only one. however this is the only thing i could think of as i cant say wether or not its the problem
anyone else come across this before? im sure its not common as ive not seen it on this forum after searching

    oh and a q-tecpsu 550w
think im gonna send the board back cuz ive tried everything and have read alot of other posts with probslems on the msi platinum 965
This PSU will not get you anywhere. It's one of the worst PSU makers worldwide having only peak wattages which is very wrong.
Try another PSU like Antec, Enermax, Tagan, OCZ etc.

  • Memory problem on Msi x48c platinum

    Hi every body,
    I have a MSI x48c platinum mainboard,
Recently i bought a ddr3 memory module (corsair CMX4GX3M2A1600C9) trying to upgrade my system,
after replacing old memories with new ones, system didn't boot. Even bios setting page did not apear. So i installed old rams and by decreasing Dram frequensy at 1066MHz and then replacing old and new memories i managed to boot the system up and use the new modules.
Now the question is that how i can use the maximum of ram frequency? Which setting do you recomend?
I set everything else on auto at bios settings.
If  you should know, i use an intel q9400 cpu.
Here is an image of my bios setting page where all settings are shown:

highest you will be able to use with your setup on the dimms will be 1333mhz with 2 dimms at timings of 9-9-9-24 command rate 2T at the most even if it boots at that frequency it may not be stable!
With a frequency higher than 1066 MHz system can't boot,
Quote from: xmad on 07-September-12, 22:59:26
Try doing a full cmos clear >>Clear CMOS Guide<< after installing the new memory in the proper channel.
By default that memory will operate at 1333 9-9-9-24 1t, see if it will boot after the cmos clear.
There have also been allot of bios updates that provided for better memory support, i suggest seeing what version you have and flashing to the newest. (with your old ram installed to ensure stability.)
I updated bios to last version (7.4), clearing cmos would default setting on bios thus system can't boot again.

Also try setting memory voltage to 1.65v and see if that works.
Have been trying memory voltage up to 1.83v, but it didn't work with memory frequency higher than 1066...

  • Planning To buy MSI K9N Platinum + AMD X2 3800+

    Hello everyone,
as the title as Iam planning to buy a MSI K9N Platinum board with an AMD X2 3800+ for a new system build. Ive been out of the game for a while, the last time I was really up to date on computer technology is when the AMD XP 2500+ Barton was the hottest thing on the market, some what of a new comer to dual core technology. I have a few questions, mainly about the board it self. I did a little searching and that answered some of my question but I have a few more.
Ive read a lot about the shutdown problems from the board when transferring large files or burning DVDs. I have a few questions about that.
From what I see so far, this is a very informative forum and I appreciate any and all information. So here goes:
    1) It says on the MSI website that the ram slot for this motherboard is at 1.8 volts. The ram Iam planning to get is OCZ Platinum EL XTC PC2-6400 1GB 2X512 DDR2 CL4-5-4-15 240PIN DIMM Dual Channel Memory Kit. On the OCZ website it says that the ram modules run at 2.1 volts. My Question is if I stick this ram in the mother board will it boot long enough for me to go into the bios and change the ram voltage to 2.1 volts?
    2) Now Ive read about the shutdown problems with this board. Ive seen a lot of people up the VCore to 1.35V. If I do this along with a bios flash, will this take care of the problems?
    3) Now the dealer that Iam buying my PC from didn't have this board in stock for the last week. He just got them in 2 days ago this week. Therefore Iam assuming he has the lastest version of these boards. Now are these problems taken care of on the new version of these boards? If not what can I do to get rid of them?
    4) Is there anything else I should know about this motherboard?
    Thanks for the the help.

Yes, you could set up manually the voltage to 2.1v perfectly I've got one k9nsli p, with an amdx2 3800+ whit 2gb ddr2 (512x4 twins pack corsair xms2 ddr2 800) that works at 1,9v

My shutdowns problems was resolved by unnistallin' nvidia IDE controller, nothing about vcore or flashin bios... I keep original bios version 1.0 & Core center shows vcore at 1.33v

  • PC won't boot after memory upgrade (on MSI P45D3 Platinum)

I am having a problem on my MSI P45D3 Platinum motherboard system (Dual OS: Win XP and Win 7)
Until recently I was running it on PATRIOT 2GB (2x1GB) 1600MHz DDR3 PDC32G1600LLK memory (CL7) and all was fine, though running only at 1066MHz, since I couldn't tweak the settings (latencies/voltage) in order for it to run at 1600MHz.
I wanted to add RAM but since I couldn't find the same type anywhere in my town, I decided to go for PATRIOT 4GB (2x2GB) 1600MHz DDR3 PSD34G1600KH Signature Line (CL9). However, the system never booted again (blank screen, no signal sent to monitor) after adding the two new sticks of RAM! The new RAM is working fine when I remove the old and vice versa, so I know it is not a case of defective sticks.
I must mention that I cannot fiddle with the RAM timings because I cannot even reach BIOS!
Any help will be most welcome!

Mixing different memory modules is always a gamble and likely to cause such problems.  Identical modules should be used for best results.
In many cases, you can set what you want regarding memory configuration, getting the RAM mixture to work stable will simply be impossible, even though there is no defect.

  • MSI x48c platinum - does not detect SATA HDDs

I am having some problems with a pc build with motherboard not detecting SATA HDDs (MIS x48c Platinum).
I believe I have exhausted all other avenues, and I would appreciate some help if I have missed something obvious.
(details of other components are listed at end of mail).
When I built pc using these components, and went into BIOS settings, the SATA HDD's were not detected.  I tried changing BIOS settings, but no difference if SATA, AHCI, or IDE settings.
I removed the HDDs and successfully tested them in another machine (also formatted them while had them istalled in other pc).
IDE optial drives are detected.  I have tried to boot with these disconnected to ensure no isues with both IDE and SATA drives connected, but this did not resolve issues.
I have also tried connecting HDD to different onboard SATA ports, and connecting just one drive with no success.
Resetting BIOS defaults, and using clear CMOS reset did not resolve issues either.
Sometimes on boot, it takes a few attempts to boot correctly, and on these occassions I receive an error message "Warning !!! The previous performance of overclocking is failed, and the system is restored to the default settings, Press any key except "DEL" to enter setup ......."  I haven't tried to set any over clocking.
I read about a number of issues on MSI forum related to SATA drives which were resolved by BIOS upgrade (mobo was shipped with v.7.0 released 20 March 08).  I managed to install an old IDE HDD and flash BIOS, but still no resolution of issues detecting SATA drives (BIOS V.7.2 released 29 July 08).
I've tried everything I can think of at this stage.  Is there anything else I should try, or is there something wrong with this motherboard?
    Spec:
    Motherboard:
    343949 MSI X48C Platinum, X48, Socket-775,
    DDR2/DDR3, ATX, GbLAN, 2xPCI-Ex(2.0)x1
    Other components in build:
CPU Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550
Graphics Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 512MB
    HDD 2 x Samsung SpinPoint T166 500GB
    RAM 4GB (2x2GB) GeIL DDR3 1333MHz Value Dual Channel (7-7-7-24) PC3-10660
PSU 700W X-Power ATX SLI PSU
ODD DVD & CDR drives from an old pc - IDE connections.

i just remember     i had once similar problem with a sata driver. the issue is this you can not adjust everything in bios in one go and expect mobo to know about it. what i mean is this for instance you disable the raid then you save it and exit and then when it reboot you go back to bios and reset another another parameter,  you save and exit and on reboot you go back to bios and reset another parameter. i got round the prob that way and it worked and mobo saw the sata HDD. give this a shoot good luck and finally make sure raid is disabled
this is what i would do
1- make sure the jumper setting on your IDE Hdd is correct (Y may have to try this twice as there are two different setting on jumper setting for Master)
    2- connect the sata HDD
    3-click on power
4-go to bios and disable raid save exit
5-on reboot go back to bios
6--on first option click on it then you should see all devices that can be seen by mobo if you do not see sata HDD you have to click on enable for the auto to see the device once it sees the device save and exit. REMEMBER THE JUMPER SETTING  ON IDE HDD CAN CAUSE PROB . SO try the other jumper setting for master, repeat this procedure once more hopefully you get it right
