MSI 970A-G46 and SLI Bridge

So I use a Ge-Force 545 1.5GB card on my machine and when I purchased it I got a good deal so I picked up 2.  I had the second on put up until now and when I had to buy a new MB I purchased the MSI 970A-G46.  Now I thought I'd go ahead and use the second 545 card and make it a SLI setup, however the MSI 970A-G46 doesn't appear to have included the SLI Bridge.  Was this an oversite or what because without it it's kinda hard to sell it as a SLI Motherboard.

A SLI Bridge is among the Optional Accessories what means it is not usually included unless it is offered that way or that kind of accessory is usually included in the local market where it is sold. Since boards of that price level usually don't come with a SLI Bridge (or are used for SLI) it was obviously not included with your board. If you need a bridge check ebay where you will easiely find one.

  • MSI 970A-G46 and posting Bios

    Okay a little background,
    i recently built this platform that is in my signature. it would randomly shutdown so i attempted to update the bios and wound up bricking it. after speaking with people at MSI they had me mail it to them than sent me a swapped out one. it worked well for the first couple days than started to randomly shutdown. now it will not post everything turns on but i get no video on my monitor and the usb mouse and keyboard will not light up. i have been doing some swapping around with another computer to test thing and i believe i have 2 possible scenarios of what is wrong. currently i have 4 sticks (4x4) 16 GB of patriot PGV316G1333ELQK sector 5 memory (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220435) i have some (2x4) 8GB of Patriot PSD38G1600KK memory out of my sons computer that i swapped out of it to see if that was my problem and it will post and start up (possibly with only 2 sticks in not drawing as much power). so i am thinking that it is either my PSU bad or that my memory is simply incompatible. one thing i noticed is that i accidently forgot to plug in the 8 pin ATX power connector for the MB from my PSU and it acted the same way and would not post bios or show any video or light up my mouse or keyboard. so i guess my question is whether or not my PSU is bad or if its my memory. evidently the memory is 1.65v and 9-9-9-24 so is my memory drawing to much power from the MB and the PSU cant keep up? or is the memory just unusable. i have tried to understand from some of the posts here about memory and evidently XMP but i guess i am a little old used to be ddr2 etc fit amd or intel but alot has changed. any help on any suggestions on my problem would be appreciated. i cannot use my sons power supply as it only has 4 pin connector for the ATX on the MB

    Look for a single rail psu of around 450W. At 450W it should offer at least 34A on +12v. To be on the safe side go for a quality brand psu like Corsair.

    Using two sticks is ideal and reduces the stress for the mem controller in the cpu. The more sticks you are using the more stress. Because of that e.g. ram can not be run at the speed/timings it would work with in two stick configuration. At least it is a dual channel setup meant for two sticks. Still four sticks can be used but mostly at lower speed. If the four sticks are already at their limit (like ddr3 1333 1.65v sticks) compatibility issues are guaranteed.
    Two sticks of 8 GB would be ideal if that would be a matched dual channel kit and not mixing separatly bought sticks..

    hi I bought today msi 970a-g46 and amd fx 8350
    first 30 min my pc work fine
    after 30 minute Became a black screen
    Then shut down the computer
    and open the case
    and i press power button
    my GPU fan Does not work
    And the screen is still not working just black screen without beep sounds
    on motherboard i see 1 led work
    2led 3led 4led Does not work < that fine or not ???
    my powersaplly is xfx 450 watt
    my GPU card gigabyte amd 6670

  • MSI 970A-G46 SLI BIOS for processor

    Hi!
    I have been considering to buy a MSI 970A-G46 SLI with a AMD FX-6300 6C 3.5Ghz Black Edition processor.
    What i have researched is that some motherboards do not have updated BIOS for AMD FX processors.
    So now im wondering, does  MSI 970A-G46 SLI have this updated BIOS for AMD FX processors? or do i need to update it myself with an older AMD AM3 socket processor?

    I have seen it reported here w/ stock clocks during stress tests. IE: Prime 95 or Intel Burn Test
    It has also been seen when doing rendering, Antec spot cools and vrm coolers have been used in the past to enable better overclocking, but I wouldn't.

    The board will run with 125 watt cpu's and will work fine for many users, there may however be some issues if stress tests are used or airflow is insufficent.
    This is the only downside to AMD using the same socket over and over, some older designs will "work", but weren't designed with the future cpu's in mind.

  • MSI 970A-G46 help.

    I just built my first PC and it won't boot up. The I can hear the PSU running but the a light called LED 1 flashes and then nothing else happens. Ive checked and rechecked the cables and haven't found anything messed up. The RAM and CPU are installed correctly. Could the Hard drive possibly be the problem? Please help i really want my pc to work.
    Specs:
    Mother Board: MSI 970A-G46
    CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2ghx Quad-Core.
    GPU: MSI  HD R5450
    Hard Drive 1tb Sata.
    PSU: 600 watt Thermaltake.
    RAM: 2 sticks of 4gb Corsair.

      I recently got same motherboard. When it is running normal you will have four small blue LED lights that stay lighted. I had issue where over clock would not disengage and or engage. And only one blue LED indicator light was on. And no matter what it would not restart; with reset, hard shutdown.
    SOLUTION by Bumper: Simple CMOS manual reset on motherboard, restart and press F2 [At this point motherboard bios has been reset to default settings.] 
    If it turns out you still have a problem; search Amazon for simple cheap testers to test mainboard, PSU, etc. Chances are if you see lights the PSU is OK.

  • Enabling analog output sound on MSI 970A-G46 motherboard

    Please tell me how to enable analogue output on my MSI 970A-G46 motherboard (via Realtek integrated audio card). I installed the drivers, but I only have Realtek Digital Output and Realtek Digital Output (Optical) available. The analogue output (Realtek High Definition Audio) returns "Not plugged in" error. How can I enable this output ? What exactly shall I plug in ? Everything is plugged in. I think it may have something to do with the JAUD1 connector, but I'm not sure. On old AC'97, it used to be 2 jumpers that needed to short some pins, but I don't know if this is the case with the new Realtek HD anymore (who has a different connector). Thanks.

    I would first uninstall your present Realtek sound drivers, then reinstall the driver from the above page link. You have to check the box that says "I accept to the above" (yes, poor English...), then hit the "Next" button and the driver page loads.
    They work fine.

  • Help: new MSI 970a-g46 not booting.

    hello.
    i searched this forum before posting but couldn't find a solution that worked, so i thought i'd post my issue and see if y'all could help. basically, after installing the mobo and all the parts, powering on the machine does nothing but spin the fans and illuminate phase 1 CPU light for a split second. then nothing. no beeps, no further activity.
    i just purchased brand new:
    MSI 970A-G46
    AMD FX 8-Core
    Ballistix 4GB DDR3 PC3-12800 (1 stick)
    Diablotek EVO ATX midtower.
    and i'm using these my old parts:
    Themaltake Purepower 500 ATX 12V 2.0
    Gigabyte G Force 8 Series (GV-NX86S256H) graphics card
    an IDE PCI card (where my 160gb maxtor with the OS connects)
    two SATA drives seagate 500GB and a WD 2TB
    up untill i shut down my old system to build this one, everything was working fine.
    after reading the forum, i've tried moving my RAM from slot 2 to each other slot. trying to boot each time had same result.
    i tried to reseat the CPU chip, but went no further than taking the fan off and making sure the CPU pins were not visible. then pushed down on the fan with some force while i put it back. trying to boot had the same result.
    i've tried to clear the CMOS, but honestly not sure if i did it right. moved the jumper over, then waited a bit and moved it back. tried booting after that, same result.
    i'm hoping someone has a quick fix that might keep me from pulling the mobo back out and starting again.
    (side question: if i do have to start again, do i need more heatsync themal goo or will the stuff already on the CPU still work since it's never turned on?)
    thanks in advance for any help. if i can provide more info on my setup, please let me know.
    this is my first build all on  my own and it's having predictable results.

  • MSI 970A-G46 Woes

    Hi Folks
    Well to say I am disappointed with MSI is an understatement. A few months ago I bought an MSI 970A-G46 (MS-7693). It lasted for a month or so before the onboard NIC decided to vanish from my system. I got in touch with the reseller and arranged an RMA, after a 2-3 weeks away it was returned and I proceeded to refit it, as I was fitting the graphics card the PCI-E retainer thingy snapped off (and I'm always extremely careful doing builds, I've been doing them since the mid 90's). Okay I thought, it will work well without the springy thingy, so all was well (but I wan't too pleased about it, the "Military class" part(s) doesn't seem to extend to the plastic fixtures and fittings).
    After having it back in my machine I get notice of a new BIOS (v2.5) which I'm advised to install (Windows 8), I've always been a nervous "flasher" but things have come a long way since the early dangers of installing a new BIOS and I've not had a failure yet. I read the instructions with all due diligence and set about flashing.... I would usually do it from within the UEFI BIOS itself, but I thought "What the hell? I'll do it via windows" All went well and the machine rebooted as it said it would, it then preceded to "flash" just exactly as it shows in the guide.  After a few minutes I got a message along the lines of "BIOS Updated successfully" it then rebooted and guess what? Oh yeah! You're way ahead of me... it died completely and nothing I can do will bring it back. I've tried everything from replacing the CPU to removing the battery and moving the JBAT jumper numerous times, this is one dead board.
    Now, are there any tips or tricks I can use with this board to bring it back to life short of ANOTHER RMA? I sincerely doubt it but I'm hoping that there's something I'm missing with the new generation of boards...? Any ideas?
    If there is no advice worth giving me, I'm not bothering to RMA it again, it's been more trouble than it's worth (and all the expensive postage I keep having to spend to return it). I used to be a big fan of MSI since the early days but I doubt I shall buy another motherboard from them, this board has been nothing short of disastrous.

    Yeah CW I get your point.
    The fact is however, I got my replacement board (after the first RMA) directly from MSI, so any relevant information should have been included with the new board.
    I shouldn't have to do "research", especially when the MSI software indicates it can update the BIOS for you. I wrongly assumed that if I followed MSI's instructions to the letter that I'd have no problems. More fool me!
    This's the only flash that's ever failed and I've been flashing since the early days when it was done from floppy, hazardous times indeed!
    Incidentally, the Gigabyte board I bought to replace the MSI had all the relevant information included in the box with regard to the flashing of the BIOS and I've done so without issue. I flashed my ASUS Sabertooth board too, also without issue.
    My assumption now, is that the replacement board was a "lemon" and it has been consigned to history via the trash (recycling of course)
    No more MSI for me I'm afraid (at least not motherboards, I have more faith in their graphics cards, oddly)

  • MSI 970A-G46 Northbridge Overheats

    Hello
    My first MSI 970A-G46 stopped working perfectly one moment, and the next it was dead. Nothing responded, everything was doublechecked, PSU, CPU, RAM and I ended up returning the motherboard, recieving a new one just like it.
    The new board has now been installed, and everything works as it should. After about 30 minutes of gameplay, the computer just went black. I thought "Thermal shutdown" as soon as it happened.
    I booted again and checked all temps, everything seemed fine, CPU and Sys Temps were in the 40's Celcius.
    I then felt the Northbridge with my fingers, and it is BURNING hot.
    MSI 970A-G46
    AMD Phenom II X4 Black Edition 3.2Ghz @ Stock speed
    8GB Kingston HyperX @ Stock speed
    GTS 450 @ Stock speed
    1TB Samsung SATA
    Why is the Northbridge burning hot? My old Mobo, same model, never did this. I never found out what killed it though.
    Ive done my share of research before asking questions here, and I do find other people talking about burning hot Northbridges on this specific MOBO.

    It's a liquid-cooling cooler.
    What's your NB voltage? Has that been adjusted?
    And, when you say "idle," are you talking about "idle" after you have fully booted, or "idle" when you're looking at the UEFI screen before you boot?  I ask the question because a lot of people think that when they are in the bios/UEFI,  pre-boot, that they are "idling" when actually the cpu is usually running flat out...  Doesn't actually "idle" until after you've booted to your desktop for several reasons.

    My PC has this strange problem. On turning it on, the lights come on, the fans start whirring, but there is no video signal...
    There are no beeps or anything..
    Since this happened right after I installed a new HDD, I took it out..
    But even then it did not work!
    I tried clearing the CMOS by moving the jumper and it booted up...
    But when I again tried with the jumper in the default position it stopped working!
    Can any one tell me what's going on here??

    Check your leads from your PSU to your GPU (if it requires same--I'm not conversant with nVidia gpus)--and just for fun, switch it out with its twin.  Reseat the gpu, carefully, etc.  To that end, it looks like your PSU is possibly just barely adequate for your setup.  What's your max amperage on the 12v rail? 
    But...sounds like a wiring short, somewhere--check all of your connections carefully, make sure there are no screws or washers, etc., loose that are underneath the motherboard and creating a short between mboard and the metal case cover (like accidentally dropping a screw when attaching the hard drive, etc.)
    As well--check your jumpers on the HD and make sure those are OK (although I doubt that's the problem--years ago an improperly jumpered hard drive could keep the entre system from booting.  These days that is rarely a problem, though, if ever.)
    The fact that your system boots when your CMOS pins are jumpered a certain way--but not in the default position--indicates a short of some kind.  If you find it and correct, you should have no permanent damage, imo.  Good luck!

    MSI Radeon HD7750 OC
    Corsair PC12800
    WD 1TB
    PSU 600W
    All stock
    Bios update: done
    Driver update: done
    Temperature is bios about 55 Celcius
    Now when gaming or doing a speed index of windows 7 the pc shuts of and when it shuts of the front case led is blinking.
    The CPU and MOBO gets verry hot.
    I have read that MSI claims that the 970A-G46 is not suited for the FX8350 becouse it has 4. +1 phases. 
    Please help me with this headache

To say that it really "supports" the FX-8350 is being generous; I'm using this CPU/motherboard combo right now, and I can see for myself that the 970A-G46 quickly falls to it's knees when the CPU reaches full load. No other properly-designed motherboard does this. Real-world tasks such as video encoding will use 100% of my processor, thus causing it to throttle. Adobe Media Encoder is not a "heavy burn-in tool"; it is, in fact, a "standard usage scenario" as you put it.
    It's the equivalent of selling a car that boasts an 8-cylinder engine, but can only use 2 cylinders driving down the freeway because it wasn't actually designed for that much power. Very dishonest.
    At this point you have openly admitted that the motherboard is flawed. I will hold you to that. Your engineers have tested it for themselves, and have observed the CPU's power going over spec, thus not working properly with this motherboard. You can blame the problem on AMD, but it doesn't change the fact that you're selling this motherboard to unknowing consumers, neglecting to warn them about the board's limitations.
    Your courtesy upgrade option is a step in the right direction. But unless you can provide me with a more agreeable form of compensation that doesn't make me pay for shipping and leave me without a PC, I plan on escalating this issue.

  • MSI 970A-G46 Video problem

    Well hello there!
    So I have this MSI 970A-G46 motherboard, with a HIS ATI Radeon HD 5450 Graphics card and a AMD FX4100 processor with 4GB of RAM (self-built PC).
    I have been running this computer for about a year now without any problem.
    About 2 days ago, the problem started. It wouldn't boot, it won't show anything. Just make a Beep noise. It makes a 1 long beep and 2 short beeps. So I went to many forums and found out that this message means there is a video error and it is not able to connect to the monitor to show any other information.
    So I opened my system, just made sure everything is fixed tightly and nothing is loose (nothing was loose. I even maybe cleaned it up a bit), and then closed it. It booted up! Weird right? So I went along using it until today, my (Linux) OS just hung up. I had no clue what to do. So I powered it off, and restarted it. The same issue happened again! It would just give me those beeps and won't start up. This time, I took out my graphics card, cleaned it with a brush, and placed it back. Again it booted properly! Now again my PC is fine (in fact, I'm typing this from the very same PC itself).
    I am sure this is going to happen again. I have no clue why is happening. So I thought you people might have a better idea.
    So why exactly is this happening and how do I avoid it?
    P.S. I'm sorry if I haven't provided enough information. Please let me know if you need to know anything else.

    I think the video card is somehow broken, try other PCIE slot. If possible, test the card on other PC to narrow down the issue range.

    RAM: 16 GB G.Skill RipJawsZ 4*4GB (2133MHz, CL9, 4x 4GB) DDR3-RAM Kit
    Power Supply: Enermax EPM 750AWT Platimax 80Plus Platinum 750 Watt
    Graphics Card : Asus Radeon HD 7870
    Error Description: After I did the Bios version 2.2 update, the PC speaker no longer works.
    How can I enable this again.
    In the BIOS settings I could not find a matching entry.
    Please help me ..

    You are correct AFAIK.  It seems to me that the board still beeps during boot (running the 2.6 UEFI), but it's faint--so faint that if you aren't listening closely you won't hear it.  If something's wrong, however, the beeps are nice and loud, IIRC.  Like Nichrome says, though--if the system boots then there's no point in worrying over the beeps...
