MSI 990FXA-GD65 and Sapphire 7870 XT Tahiti - only 4 cards working

Hi
I am trying to use more than 4 GPU of 7870XT Tahiti working on MSI 990FXA-GD65, but only 4 GPUs are visible. In control panel (device lists) there is 5th when I use all x16 slots, but it looks as below:
I use PCI-E 1x-16x and 16x-16x risers, also tried to short pins responbile for graphic card detection.
Win 7 64-bit , tried Catalyst 13.1, 13.4 , power supply Lepa 1600W, CPU Sempron x2 190, 2GB RAM
Please help with this issue.

You have already been advised using more graphics cards than what is supported is not going to work. That is a user to user support answer that was provided. This is not MSI but a user to user forum of MSI products. MSI is not involved here, and the opinions & statements here are not connected to them in any official manner. Your question has been answered. This thread should now probably be locked.

It is sad MSI cannot support their customers in professional way no matter what they are using their equipment for. It is my private matter and counted on support. Thanks anyway
Sorry, that is not going to fly! Would Ford Motor Company or Smith & Wesson willingly offer support to a bank robber knowing the intended purpose of their product?

Hello firstly a happy x-mas to everyone
Let me state my story i bought msi 990fxa-gd65 and amd fx-8120 bulldozer cpu a few weeks back.
i installed it and it ran was very happy for 2 days , then it happened... , seems the vrm's burned !
let me explain you why i think was a faulty board.
when it did ran it gave 1.37volts to cpu at idle , stock 3.1ghz turbo disabled, was all ready high for me , but i thought i will try newer bios later , as wanted to play some bf3.
then i just ran 5min to see if all my memory is working , with blend test, and msi board gave 1.48 volts to cpu all stock settings nothing changed in bios except memory settings o.0
1.48 was why to high looking at other reports etc.
so when in bios to change last setting on my memory , and boom did not boot, try booting it few times, and boom there was smoke , vrms blown , without the pc even booting .
so it seems board and cpu died, they rma the cpu but the board they refused to.
the retail store told me they tried there best and only way i can get rma is with rma number from msi, i logged ticket on msi website no reply yet, hoping this post will get me a reply.

ive seen allot of people online getting a rma for vrm's burned , just hope i can get one also :(

  • MSI 990FXA-GD65 revision

I think it only depends on the BIOS version with which was the motherboard released.

  • MSI 990FXA-GD65 + AMD FX-6300 + 16GB 1866MHz RAM Won't Boot

    Hello,
Today I received parts for my new gaming system (sans water cooler, using the stock heatsink+fan until then), however I'm experiencing problems with the setup.  The specs are as follows:
    - MSI 990FXA-GD65
    - AMD FX-6300 CPU
    - GSKILL 16GB (2x8GB) 1866MHz DDR3 RAM
    - Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB SSD
    - 2x MSI GeForce GTX 660 Ti
    - EVGA NEX750B1 PSU
    - BitFenix Comrade case
Upon powering on (after assembly), the Phase Indicator only has the first two LEDs lit up (Phase 2 Power Mode, according to the manual).  No output is displayed on screen.  I've tried removing and re-inserting the CPU and removing one of the graphics cards, to no avail.
I would appreciate any help/advise that could be offered, that I might get this system up and running!
    Kind Regards

Try to run this system out of the case on non conductive area (e.g. plain cardboard) with 1 stick of RAM only, 1 GPU (try without any graphics cards too), single HDD/SSD, PSU of course, CPU+cooler and monitor+keyboard and mouse. When booting spam Delete and it should take you to the BIOS where you have to change timings of RAM suggested in the post about GSkill memory.
If possible, borrow different brand of RAM to test your PC with.
Make sure that if you're running single GPU, that video cable is connected to the card. If no GPU, then to the motherboard.

  • MSI 990fxa-gd65 new build won't boot or post

Hi, any help with this issue would be most appreciated
I have just built a new system spec below:
    MSI 990fxa-gd65
    AMD FX8350
    2 x 4GB Hyper X fury DDR3 1866Mhz RAM
    MSI GTX960 Graphics card
    1TB WD HDD
Corsair HX1000w (recovered from an older machine and in full working order)
Unit powers ok, all fans are running, HD, Graphics card fans run and lights up DVD drive spins up OK too.
Motherboard has two cpu phase lights lit. There is no post beeps or video out.
I've tried it with a single stick of memory and a different lower spec video card but nothing seems to work. Some posts are suggesting the CPU may not be supported with the MoBo's current version of bios so questions are:
How can I find out the bios version and if it is compatible as it doesn't reach the bios screen?
If it needs updating how do you update it?

    Hi,
Post S/N of the motherboard and we are able to tell you (roughly) which BIOS version it has.
What if you try without graphics card?
Did you try to clear CMOS? --> >>Clear CMOS Guide<<
If it needs updating, you will either need:
    -Supported CPU by current BIOS
-SPI programmer (some IT services has one)

  • MSI P67A-GD65 and other 1155's whine

    Hello MSI and community.
Recently I decided to build a PC especally for minimun noise.
I waited a long time for the B3 boards so I wouldn't have to go through the trouble of returns. Sadly this didn't work out.
First of all I ordered the cheapest and first mobo(gigabyte ph67-ud-b3) that was relesed. Soon as I plugged it in and Windows 7 got to boot screen (from the DVD) it started giving off a high pitched whine.
After alot of research I RMA it and ordered a Asus P8H67-M LX. Loaded it up and thought woohoo no whine, then as soon as windows finishes installing the drivers (first time on windows) of goes the whine again.
I RMA that 1 too and bought the MSI P67A-GD65 advertized as "whistle free" as well as people on another forum saying they didn't hear anything from theirs. This one does the same but I can't keep sending back boards for RMA and want to keep this one so I'm here hoping to try and resolve the issue with MSI.
I have tested these boards with Casecom 500w, ozc gamextream 700w, antec true power 650w and coolermaster pro m 600w with them behind a door to eliminate any fan noise.
MSI GPUS: 8800GS, 8800GTX and 560TI as well as onboard from the h67 board.
I've tried many differant BIOS settings, nothing but disabling C-STATE (fully disabled) effected it. (I havn't manually played with volts)
On the other 2 boards I noticed it seemed to dim when I unplugged all USB devices and in their BIOS it was c3/c6 I had to disable, MSI board doesn't whine as loud as the other 2 but it's more constant but with a morse code type theme to it which seems to be coming from CPU socket whenever the PC is idle, it's equally noisy from either side of the board. It's very annoying and accually gives me a headache as maxium distance.
Alot of people have said their 1155 board don't make a sound but 3/3 for me have so I'm not sure what to think.
I'm currently running with c-state disabled but Turbobooster only seems to go to 25% and slower clock speed on my i5-2500k and I assume for power usage, all things I don't want.
Can you give any information at all? Might it be possible to correct with a BIOS update? I'm open to any suggestions and will keep checking back here.
Hope you will be able to work with me on this issue.
Thank you in advance, I've prefered to go with MSI all my computering life.

Used the same CPU cooler on all three? That would be my wild guess.
I test it fanless of course  but no I have used mutiple heat sinks aswell.

What's wrong with throttling down at idle or low usage? Who sits at a stop light with the engine at full throttle?
I'm not too sure what disabling C-state accually does but when running Orthos I saw speed was at 3.6ghz instead of the 3.3 while disabled.

  • MSI P67 GD65 and 1600mhz RAM

Picked up a MSI P67a-GD65 to replace my faulty (and by faulty, not SATA port faulty)Gigabyte UD3P.  Anyways.  I had a stable overclock of 4.7ghz on that board so I assumed w/ close voltages Id hit that on this board.  Ive spent the last 2 days trying to get it stable to no avail.  Dropped the speed to 4.5ghz even w/ same voltages and nothing.
Finally I dropped my RAM speed from 1600mhz c8 to 1333 c9.  System is stable at 4.7 no problem now.  The ram has been used for awhile without any issues on 2 other boards (P55a-UD3 and P67a-UD3P) and memtest checks out.  Is there a problem w/ the 1600mhz strap on this board?  Ive read other people have issues with certain RAM speeds as well (although it varys).  Specs below!
    MSI P67a-GD65
    Intel 2600k cooled by H50 w/ push/pull 38mm deltas
    Corsair DDR3 1600mhz C8 (2x2gb)

Screw you ELvis  This is doz from OCF, was hoping to find someone from MSI chime in on the problem!  Getting frustrated.  I have some new GSkill 1600mhz c8 2x4gb on the way as my wife eats up the RAM editing pictures in photoshop and bridge at the same time.  Maybe its the RAM, but it hasnt given me an ounce of problems yet!  Maybe Ill try some 2000mhz C9 that I have laying around at 1866mhz and see if it likes that.
Any more of that and you will have problems you didn't expect.

  • 990fxa GD65 and Sound Blaster Problems

    Hi Everyone,
Upgraded my motherboard to a 990fxa GD65 with 2 XFX hd7970 in Xfire.  Only 1 slot can be used to set up the sound card, which is a SB Titainium Fatality Professional PCIe sound card into PCIe2 slot.  The motherboard see's it, and the device manager see's it.  Even put test sound through the "primary sound device" manager and see the green sound bars move when I select a test sound.  PCIe2 slot should be fine for this card I would assume.  ..........and yes, the boards sound card is disabled in bios.  No conflicts with any other sound drivers or hardware that I can detect.  Any thoughts???????????????????

Quote from: exileLyk on 29-December-13, 18:28:15
This card needs one PCI-E x 1, right?
By that "Only 1 slot can be used to set up the sound card, which is a SB Titainium Fatality Professional PCIe sound card into PCIe2 slot" you mean that you installed your sound card into the second PCI-E x 1 (above the first PCI-E x 16 slot)?
I'm using the same PCI-E x 1 slot for my Sound Blaster Z sound card without a problem, didn't try other slots though.
Correct.  Sound Blaster card in slot #2 which is a PCIe x 1 slot.  Can't put this in any other slot because of the Xfire set up.  PCIe #1 slot can not be used because of the 990 chip set that is right in the way.  It is PCIe slot #2 or nothing.  But, slot PCIe #2 should work without a hitch.  Once again, card works fine.  FUBAR with the motherboard or drivers.  I am putting my chips on drivers.  Or, something is not good with the mobo.

  • VRM temperature on an MSI 990fxa-gd65

    Hi.
I have recently replaced my stock AMD cooler with a TX3, after that I have noticed that a sensor reading was getting too high, usually +12* c above CPU temps at stock and as far as 27* C above CPU temps when the I overclocked the processor to 3.9 and stress tested it with Prime95, I found out that this is probably the VRM temp; since I touched its heatsink and it was quite hot to the touch. My question is: Does anyone know what are the maximum safe temperatures for the VRM on this board?

I have two cases, an older one with the PSU at the top which may help remove some of the hot air from the VRM area but unfortunately it can only accommodates a 92 mm exhaust fan, while my newer CM Elite 311 has bad airflow all over and I usually leave the side panel open, moreover it only has 1 120 mm fan, beside the intake and exhaust fans, positioned at the graphics card level. I was thinking about attaching a few small fans (40 mm or something if I can find any) to the heat sink not sure if that will be possible though. I guess I'll just have to push my CPU a little more and see if the VRM temperatures remain within acceptable limit. Thank you for your help.

  • 990FXA-GD65 AMD 970 BE CPU Ratio Only working on one core

Pretty much cut & paste of the "990FXA-GD80 AMD 955 BE CPU Ratio Only working on one core" thread.
I have overclocked this AMD 970 BE previously on a asus m3n72-d without issue. Always changing the multiplier to achieve the desired frequency while leaving the FSB at 200. But, after setting up everything on my new 900fxa-gd65 the CPU ratio change to 19x with a fsb of 200 only changes one core to 3.8 ghz and leaves the others at 3.5 ghz (17.5x 200).

Just thought I'd make a new thread to seperate the issue between the two MSI boards.

For what its worth, the problem should be fixed in the latest BETA UEFI/BIOS Release:

  • MSI 990FXA-GD65 [MS-7640 PCB 3.0] throttling issue

Hi, i'm on the last official BIOS (J.90) and my CPU throttle to 4x multiplier on my Phenom II X6 1090T.
I got this problem on every cold start. And i need to reboot in order to temporary fix it...until the next cold start.
I noticed that when i got the problem, the temperature readings are out of range: right now i'm stuck on X4 and AMD overdrive shows a constant 197°C on all cores and OCCT reports constant 255°C. So i figure it's related to throttling protection based on false/wrong temp values from the temp sensor.
My CPU voltage is low, the big Noctua is properly installed and very cool (i can feel the heatpipes very cold!)
I tried differents settings on the bios (disabling cool n quiet for example) but nothing helps. I made a clear CMOS with the hidden button on the connectors panel, problem still there, even with stock bios parameters.
Is it a bios version issue ? do i need to rollback to another version ?
I made a ticket to MSI support but response for now.
Sorry for my bad english, i'm french
EDIT: my PCB is a 3.0 one and maybe this is my cure ?

I am little confused about UEFI versions names
On this thread https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=151619.msg1197501#msg1197501 the latest UEFI is called E7640AMS.JA1 , but you recommend me to flash "BIOS 19.10B1"
    Is it the same ?
    Thanks !
Yeah it's the same. The file is named .JA1 and it's shown at BIOS as "19.10B1". The latest official BIOS is 19.9!
Your problem seems similar to mine (Core temp : 255°C at cold starts) so I think it's hardware failure (mainboard's sensor maybe)!
