  • MSI CX70 freezes (?)

    Good afternoon everybody,
Since 2 days I'm facing quite a big problem with my ( not even 1y old ) MSI CX70 laptop.
Whenever I run windows I'm able to use my laptop for a random amount of time before Windows simply freezes.
The taskbar freezes, I can't start anything and at this very moment, HD tune gets stuck aswell making my laptop pretty useless.
    Things I already tried:
    -  Windows reinstallation ( tried Windows 8.1, 8 and 7 ( x64 legit MSDN ) )
    -  Removed my SSD and tested it in another computer ( is working fine )
    -  Removed my HDD and tested it in another computer ( is working fine )
    -  Executed chkdsk multiple times
    -  Executed sfc /scannow multiple times.
    -  Resetted BIOS to "optimized defaults"
    -  Unplugged the battery for 5 minutes
    -  Memtestx86 ( RAM seems fine )
    -  Disabled dynamic tick ( was listed as a solution by microsoft )
    -  Tried clean booting ( no effect )
    -  Tried installed as much as Windows updates as possible ( no effect )
    -  Tried installing ALL drivers for the installed Windows version ( no effect )
My MSI CX70 laptop has the following hardware:
    -  Intel Core i5-3210M
    -  Nvidia Geforce 640M ( and Intel interegrated GFX 4000 )
    -  8GB ram
    -  1TB HDD and 1 SSD ( replaced DVD drive with SSD )
And a custom BIOS I "bought" from here is flashed at this very moment.
    Problem description:
After 2 days now Windows gets stuck after a random amount of use-time.
The taskbar simply doesn't respond anymore, and all opened programs get stuck.
That being said, when I plugin my USB3.0 flashdrive in my USB3.0 port, the drive does NOT get recognized by Windows ( but connecting a mouse is working just fine..  And connecting the flashdrive in any other 2.0 port is working just fine aswell )
I listed the things I could think of above, but nothing I did fixed my problem.
Did anybody else have such a problem?
Is anybody able to help me out with my problem?
    Thank you kindly.

  • MSI GE60 freezes after RMA.

I have a MSI GE60 with i5-3210M and Geforce GT 650M, born with Windows 7, and I have had problems with it freezing, and requiring a manual restart, alomst since day 1.
The problem can occur almost anytime while using the Nvidia card both in games and while using 3D modelling software etc. I mainly encounter it in games though, and it seems to most often occur during cutscenes, loading screens and especially if I tab out of the game while playing. The screen image will simply freeze and the audio disappears. Most often the hard drive LED turns completely off, and the only way forward is to turn it off with the power button and reboot.
I figured it would be the GPU and applied for an RMA, which went through. The hard drive had also become quite slow, and the fan was noisier, which might be due to the countless hard resets. I just got it back today, and I was informed that they had replaced the hard drive, the fan, and the motherboard(which I  strongly assume includes CPU/GPU as well). It is much quieter and the hard drive gets better benchmarks too. However after having the laptop back for only a few hours i tested it with playing ArmA. I flew around in a chopper in the map editor for 3 minutes, and then i tabbed out of the game and back again, which led to the laptop freezing the same way as before the RMA.
I then figured that it could be a software problem, even though I have formatted quite a few times with the recovery partition. So I did a clean install and upgraded to Windows 8 in the progress, and lo and behold.. I started up ArmA again with the same outcome as last time.
So now I am left with 2 possible scenarios for what the error might be. It could either be the RAM, which is the only vital component that was not changed during the repair, although I have run 2 cycles of Memtest without any errors. Or it might simply be the type of motherboard in this laptop that is not up to the task of running computer games.
I would like to hear from other people who owns a GE60 with the same configuration, and whether they have had similar problems, or if I am just very unlucky. Because right now I am clueless as to what the problem is.

Maybe it might be the RAM anyways. I did a GPU stress test with with Furmark, where the temperature of the GPU seemed to be stable around 65-70 degrees. After ending the test though, the laptop froze almost immediately. An hour later i did a benchmark test in Hitman: Absolution and yet again the laptop froze right after ending the test.
After googling it, I stumbled across a few posts with the same issue being presented:
    http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/267239-29-strange-computer-problem
    http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-1796554/computer-crashes-close-game.html
One specifically mentions a RAM issue: "Sounds like RAM issue (after a game is closed the ram needs to be cleaned up, and if there is a problem there it might crash)."
I tried running memtest86 4.3.7 for 4 cycles without getting any errors, but I do suspect the RAM tbh. It seems too freaky that a new motherboard/GPU would generate the exact same problem as the one it replaced imo.

  • MSI GT780 freezing

i have a msi GT780 DXR it was working fine before but then i decided to upgrade to a cruiser ssd so took one hdd out. i made a complete backup of the operating system using acronis and restored it onto my ssd. my laptop has gone faster but at times the laptop freezes for a minute and sometimes freezes altogether then i have to reboot laptop. im wondering whether the problem is in the ssd or that i restored the operating system onto it. thanks

First thing I'd do is make sure that the firmware on the SSD is up to date.....
Actually, it could very well be the restore causing the problem....
I hate saying this, but I'd do a complete reinstall, just for sanity's sake. You went from a mechanical HDD to a SSD and there are quite a few things different in how they work and are laid out, and I wouldn't doubt that by doing the restore, it probably wouldn't work well.

  • MSI GT70 freezes

    Hi.
Got a brand new MSI GT70, witch really pisses me off for the time being, almost every time I exit a game, it goes a min. and then it freezes... Now and then it freezes randomly in win or in game as well... I'm considering to install Win 7 really, hopeing that that solve the problem, but then again, if it dosen't, I don't have win 8 install disk, since that didn't follow the laptop... Any recommandations what to do about the freezing? Have used RegCure Pro to fix registry fails+++, but it still freezes:-(

    Bios did not fix it....

    Any suggestion on that?

  • MSI GE60 freezes after closing games.

I have had my GE60 laptop for roughly ½ a year now.
Since day one I encountered some problems with it freezing while gaming but lately it has just spun out of control. Whenever I shut down a game there is roughly a 80% risc that the laptop will just freeze up within the next 5-20 seconds. The fan is not very loud but I can still hear it turning down a little around the time it freezes. It does not seem to matter which game I am playing, I have even encountered the problem after playing Minecraft. Often the  only way to avoid it is closing windows immediately after closing the game.
When it freezes the screen stays turned on, but the mouse, clock etc. freezes and the only way out is a hard reset. About 90% of the time the hard drive indicator LED also stops flashing, and if i press Caps Lock there is no indicator for it either. Most of the physical buttons for WiFi, fan acceleration etc. works though.
I suspected video drivers to be the problem but updating them has been to no avail, so any other suggestion would be much appreciated.

    It is Windows 7
no recovery cd? btw you can contact msi for recovery cd. otherwise if you have the windows serial key under your nb then you can just download windows 7 installation image from microsoft website and burn a cd with it to reformat your nb. if you do not have windows serial key under you nb then the serial key must be put into the bios and in this case proceed as same as the previous sentence. download and burn cd , reformat.

  • MSI GT60 - 2OD - Audio problems, Laptop not recognizing audio jacks and speakers

I tried to redirect the sound from my TV to the laptop in order to use my bluetooth headset.
It worked, but after turning my tv off, I continued using the headset normally.
But when I turned off my headset, the speakers stopped working and the laptop doesnt recognize any áudio inputs.
I already unninstalled the drivers, even installed my Win 8 from scratch, but nothing seems to work.
Does anybody have an idea of what is going on, or how i can fix it?

Latest driver version, I downloaded through the MSI website.
This is the first time that something like this has happened, the line is isn't set as default.
And also, when I open the Realtek HD Audio Manager, all the jacks are grayed,
At least my bluetooh headset still works.

  • MSI FX5900XT freeze up

I just built a computer that has a Soyo Dragon Plus v1.0 motherboard, 512mb ddr ram, a Athlon XP 2800+, and a MSI GeForce FX 5900XT video card running windows xp home edition. The problem is when i try and run games such as ghost recon or unreal tournament the computer will freeze. I think the problem is the video card becuase when I used the DirectX Diagnostic Tool ("dxdiag" from the run command) and did the test DirectDraw and test Direct3d it froze when I did the test direct3d, but was fine with the DirectDraw Test. I looked over the drivers and looked at the notes and it said some of the drivers were not WHQL certified so I went to nvidias website and got a newer driver and the message disapperared and said there were no driver problems. I ran the Direct3d test again and it still froze as did the games. Ive tried  changing the refresh rate and that does not work either, can someone please help me with this?

To get it all in one place . . .

FSB and the resulting memory frequency in BIOS must be the same value.
Athlon 2800+ Front Side Bus runs at 166Mhz (333 effective)
and your PC2700 mem runs at 166Mhz as well (supposing you're not overclocking) It didn't on my system and was cousing problems.
Set you memory speed to AUTO to ensure that you have it on par with the CPU.

. . . got a new power supply: Enermax 460w +3.3v/35A, +5v/35A, +12v/ 33A) but im still freezing up on 3D games. When i do the direct3d test it spins the box longer then it has in the past and ive gotten farther through games then i have but i still freeze up. Even when i try to switch screensavers to a 3d one . . .
. . . used driver cleaner, installed new drivers, installed the hyperion drivers for via and got the same result.....format my harddrive and reinstall everything or you guys have other ideas? thanks, jetboy
Before reformat I'd like to confirm & suggest a coupla' things:
-If you haven't already, clean RAM and VidCard contacts with Isopropyl Alcohol.
-Important to be sure it's in AUTO to sync RAM with CPU FSB.
-Run vid/monitor at Default resolution/refresh rate till this is solved.
You're taking all the right steps and narrowing down the probabilities here, it's a pain but everything has to be done. Some improvement is showing, let's get a full-working rig again
BTW, did this build ever work 100% or has had video probs from beginning? I'm on a build and this helps to remind me to be methodical & painstaking with it.
Folkz, any other suggestions y'all think of?

  • MSI 6167 freezing

I have a MSI 6167 Athlon motherboard with a 750MHZ processor and 256Mb of SD RAM and GeForce 2 graphics card.
Recently it has been freezing every 30 minute or so - the screen just freezes.
Now it won't turn on, the keyboard and drive lights come on, but there is no signal to the monitor and it doesnt progress through the startup stages.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance
    Ben

It seems to be fixed now..
I took everything out, tested the RAM - all OK, blew a load of dust out, took all the cards out and reseated them all, reseated the memory...
And it works! - been going for 4 hours now without a freeze - so I dunno what fixed it, but thanks anyway guys

  • [SOLVED] Constant freezes on new laptop

I have a new Packard Bell EasyNote TM laptop which is having issues after a fresh install, the system is freezing and becoming unresponsive after a very short, but randon, period of time, leaving the only option to hard poweroff, and I am stumped as to what is causing it.
The laptop has an ATI Radeon HD 4250 graphics card, at first I thought this may be a driver issue, and the X server was locking up, so I followed the solutions on the Arch wiki on ATI regarding crashes all of which do not work for me.
I have also tried removing the xf86-video-ati package completley and used soley the VESA driver, but still the system froze.
I have checked dmesg and all the log files for any indication of something going wrong, but nothing appears.
Any one have any indications as to what the cause could be?
I am running the 64bit version of Arch (which I am completley new to); I've also tried removing flash as I've heard this could be a problem with 64bit, checked for heat issues which there is none, and also not booting into X at all and staying at the tty, but still nothing.
    Thanks.

So it still hangs when you boot straight into a TTY and just let it idle for 15 minutes?
If yes, you can try booting with acpi=off appended to the grub kernel line, to see if that helps.
The above solution still results in freezes.
I booted up the laptop after leaving it off for a few hours, and left it at a TTY for 30 minutes, no crash - not what I wanted suprisingly. This was without using the acpi=off solution (I wanted it to crash to determine a baseline).
So I re-installed the xf86-video-ati drivers, booted into X, and two hours later I still hadn't encountered any issues; at this point I ran glxgears and five minutes later it did the usual freeze (X dies and booted back into an unresponsive TTY where I had launched X.
I can not determine whether this is a video issue, over-heating (though lm-sensors shows what I believe to be my CPU at a decent ~50-60 degrees), hardware problem, or due to me running 64bit.

  • MSI N580GTX - freezing games

Got a new MSI 580GTX Twin Frozr II/OC. After using it for a month or so it started acting up. When playing a more demanding game (Call of Duty: Black Ops, BulletStorm, Homefront, etc) it runs well for a few minutes, and when GPU temperature reaches about 60 or 65C (which is not that much) game freezes. When I press Ctrl-Alt-Del and I start Task Manager (or simply cancel and go back to game) most of the times it continues to run for some time (from a few seconds up to a minute or two) probably until temp reaches critical again. If I play something less demanding, such as CSS, if I'm lucky I might not get a freeze, but occasionally I do, but after a longer period, something like 15-20 mins or more. This didn't happen when it was brand new, a couple of months ago, but it started at some point while playing Bulletstorm and then somewhat got worse. First I thought it was a hitch with the new NVidia drivers 275.33 (which is not unheard of:) so I tried reverting to some older versions. Went through 270.61 and a couple more, now I'm on 267.24 and it makes no difference. Tried upgrading (and then downgrading to be sure) to latest BIOS version on the video card (1.04) and that didn't help either. Motherboard BIOS has been upgraded more than a year ago, with no issues, and it has worked that way so I'm pretty sure that's not it. Being all out of options I pulled it out to clean it (there was no dust on it by the way) and re-seated it nicely on the slot, just to be sure. Nope, that didn't fix anything. By the way, when I get the freezes, GPU usage is not even that high, it runs at about 50-60% capacity. CPU is also about 50% but never goes above 55 or 60C on core #4 (always the hottest), but I never had any problems with the CPU overheating before anyway.
So I'm getting tired of this, I think the card is defective and I would like to return it, but I live in Belgium and I couldn't find any service center or similar in Belgium. I'm starting to think it was a mistake to buy MSI stuff.
Oh, and just anticipating your PSU question, I don't think that's the case. I have a Thermaltake ToughPower 700W PSU that has been running for something like two years with no issue, and my previous video card was sucking about as much current out if it as this one (it was a 9800GX2, may it rest in peace). So as I said, I sincerely doubt it's the PSU.
    System configuration is:
    Mobo: Asus Striker II NSE
    CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad 9450 @ 2.66GHz
    2x500Gb WD HDDs
    PSU: Thermaltake ToughPower 700W
    Memory: Corsair XMS3 DHX CM3X2G1333C9DHX
    OS: Win7 Ultimate x64
That enough about sys config or do you want to know more?
    Thanks, any help appreciated.

what is the speed of the GPU fan with those temps ? and second question;  do you clean the old drivers before install this new card ?

  • Msi ti4600 freezing?

Hi, I'm running into problems frequently on my recently purchased msi ti4600-vtd card (MS-8872).  Everytime I try to play any game, it freezes up after a few minutes or seconds.  For example, When I play No one lives forever, it freezes up after 5-10 minutes into the game.
I have tried downloading the latest Nvidia drivers (41.09) from there site but was still getting the same problem. Currently, I have 31.00 drivers from MSI and bios version; 4.25.00.27.33.
Also, once in a while, I get an error screen and it lists the file(s) that could possibly be causing the problem (nv.....) which I'm guessing are all video card base drivers.  The only way is to reboot my pc which I am starting to get annoyed of.

  • MSI GX70 freezes when switching GPU

    Hi,
I'm getting more and more freezes on my MSI GX70 lately.
The freezes happen when I switch (alt+tab or Windows button) between Windows and the game World of Warcraft.
The pc is not completely stuck, Skype continues in the background but it doesn't respond to any input on the keyboard or mice. The screen remains black. I think this is related to switching gpu's (small one for Windows and big one for the game)
Is there anyone else with the same problem or feedback on where to start looking?
I'm running Windows 8.1 with all drivers from the MSI website. Bios and firmwares are up-to-date too.
    Thank you.
    Britt

This has always been an issue with World of Warcraft, even more so with ATI/AMD video cards.
