MSI DR16-B DVD-RW Drive, any good?

Is this drive any good? I like MSI technology, i have an MSI motherboard, an MSI graphics card and an MSI CD-RW drive, i want to purchase two of these MSI DR16-B DVD-RW drives for a new system i'm building.

Hi Commander Sinclair
Babylon 5 is the greatest sci-fi show ever! "Sooner or later, everyone comes to Babylon 5."
Have a look to this site for more detailed info and hints about a DVD writer (http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=2260). As they say, "setting a booktype (bitsetting) is just the process of telling your burner to convert a DVD+R disc "virtually" into a DVD-ROM instead. This feature is important for some people who have older set-top DVD players that cannot recognize the "bit" that determines what type of DVD media is sitting in the drive". Many just don't care, but if movies are your first goal, well, maybe you'll find it an interesting option.
And yes, you're right: much better not to mess with firmwares. Anyway, don't worry too much: I can burn and play my favourite movies even with my not-so-up-to-date DRA-8.
Stay tuned.

Ah, a Babylon 5 fan, excellent, thanks for the post, i'm not interested in flashing the firmware and i don't know what this booktype thing is, all i want to do is burn DVD's but i guess with all the advancements in technology, it won't be as simple as that.
Thanks Ambassador G'Kar (i know it's not the name you're using) :D

  • Msi Neo2 Kingston HyperX PC3200 BH5 Any Good ?

    Hi Guys
Anyone using 2x256mb Kingston HyperX Pc3200 Bh5 on the neo2?
curious at what fsb/timings u can run.
and if 3.1-> V would help.
thinking of buying a pair but would be great seeing some results first.
    thx in advance.

    nice thread crap...
i ordered the exact ram you are talking about, and it is a STEAL at its current price at outpost.com.  ill be receiving my sticks tomorrow, so ill have to wait and see what they can do over the weekend.
however, its been shown that BH-5 memory performs at its best at 3V+, and this board can only do 2.85v.  so, it remains to be see what can be achieved.  i hope a BIOS update will bump up the voltage.
go ahead and get it.  its a great deal at that price.

  • PC does not boot from MSI DR4-A DVD drive

    Hi,
I've just bought a NetVista P4 1.6-256MB-40GB PC with an IBM branded LG CDROM. Booted fine from the CDROM drive.
I've replaced it with an MSI DR4-A DVD+/-RW drive, but I am unable to boot from it. It is the only drive on the 2nd IDE flatcable, and set as master. I've tried a new IDE cable as well, to make sure it wasn't a cable problem, no luck.
The DVD drive is recognised in the BIOS, IDE 0 is the 40GB harddisk, and IDE 2 is the CD/DVD-ROM. IDE 1 and 3 are not installed.
However there is no way I can get the system to boot from CD (or actually the DVD drive).
Windows XP is starting up fine as well from harddisk. It recognises the IDE/ATAPI DVD drive, says its enabled and all good. A drive name is assigned to it (E:, the Primary and Secondary IDE devices in the device manager list seem all to be fine).
However when I put a CD (Audio or Data) in it, it just says no volume, enter disc. Basically I can't use it to boot, nor can I use it once the OS is up and running. If I put the MSI DVD writer back in my external firewire case and connect to it, it works fine.
Have deleted and reinstalled the IDE/ATAPI driver without success. I've installed the latest IBM NetVista BIOS version 46AUS (of april 2004), but that had no effect either.
Any ideas? Or is the drive just incompatible with the IBM NetVista PC?
    Regards,
    Niels Roskam

Test the CDROM in another system and see if there's any problem.
Try setting it as Master drive using the jumper even if it's a Single drive on the IDE controller.

I have an external firewire burner; it never shows on the desktop unless I insert a CD or DVD - that icon will then show (if I have my preferences set to show those on the desktop). Hae you checked in Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities) to see if it is listed under drives?

There is no iDVD on my mac.
There is NO alternative.   But iDVD is very easy to get.
iDVD is on the iLife 11 DISK.  Buy here:

  • Any good alternatives to DVD burning? VCD? S-VHS?

I am totally disillusioned with the time it takes to encode and burn a DVD with my PB. AppleCare acknowledges that it takes 8x - 10x source material for successful burning & if you look on these (amazingly honest & helpful)forums you soon learn that DVD burning on any Mac can be very intimidating and problematic.
I am wondering if there is info readily available for alternatives:
    1. VCD burning. I have a ton of small clips and could trim down larger clips to burn onto cds. Are there crazy problems with this as with DVDs?
    2. This PB has an S-VHS output & I got a stereo audio cord for output. Will videos created like this be viewable? I suppose it depends on the quality of original material & how do I find this info?
My PB is loaded with every imaginable video and audio pro & standard app. including ToastTitanium7, FinalCutPro, CinemaTools, DVD-StudioPro, QuickTimePro7 etc.
I was praying that DVD burning was a lot simpler than my experiences with Windows based machines. There one needed to have a stand alone powerhouse & Re-Install Windows every couple dozen burns to get rid of all the corruption but not even doing that with a Mac seems to make the process as easy as Advertised. Live & learn.
    thanks,
    frank

I can only speak from my experience, but I've not found creating and burning DVDs to be at all intimidating and certainly not problematic. Every video DVD I've created has gone smoothly; your mileage may vary, of course. Please note that these forums are for people who are having problems; the many, many people who use their systems with no trouble at all have little incentive to post in a troubleshooting forum.
I notice that you list a number of pro apps including DVD Studio Pro; DVDSP is not intended for consumer use and has a very steep learning curve (although DVDSP 4 has a mode with a simplified interface that's easier, but it still takes some learning). If you want simple, you should be using iDVD; that's Apple's consumer application for creating video DVDs, and the latest versions of iDVD and iMovie (part of iLife '06) make it, in my experience, about as easy as it can get. You can get results with DVD Studio Pro that you cannot with iDVD, but it's going to take work, just as working with FInal Cut Pro will involve more learning time than working with iMovie.
As to creation time for the disk, that's strictly a function of how fast your system can process. Compressing to MPEG-2 (which is the format video DVDs use and which is what takes the majority of the time involved in burning the DVD) takes a lot of processor horsepower, and a single-processor PowerBook isn't going to be as fast as a dual-processor G4 and much less so than a G5. If you're encoding and burning DVDs regularly, you might want to consider moving to a system with higher processing power. To optimize compression time on your PB in the meanwhile, make sure that no other application is running when you're processing the DVD and that your system has plenty of available hard drive space (for the temporary files that will be created).
As to alternatives, that depends on your needs. If you need playback in a DVD player, then burning a DVD will be your best route. Very few players can play a VCD, and as MacNoel said, quality isn't stellar. Whether or not VHS would be an acceptable alternative only you can say.
    Regards.

  • Is there any way to get firmware update for my DVD-RW Drive from Ultra 40?

Hi, I have Sun Ultra 40 Workstation which comes with Matshita DVD-RAM drive.
While I do enjoy working on my U40 workstation, its DVD-RAM drive is wll pretty bad.
It just fails to burn DVD/CD-R/RW media too often.
Yes, I got it serviced, but it's just the same.
So my final hope is to get the latest firmware, becuase latest firmware often solves such media compatability issues.
Mine has D100 firmware and I find other people who has the same drive on different system have D101, D200, D201 firmware.
So does anyone know how to contact Sun to get the latest firmware for my DVD-RAM drive?
I did contacted Matshita for this matter and they tell me to contact Sun. But I cannot even find email address for Sun Support or any. sigh...
    Thanks.

    Hello Sang,
I have Sun Ultra 40 Workstation which comes with Matshita DVD-RAM drive.
Mine has D100 firmware and I find other people who has the same drive on different system have D101, D200, D201 firmware.
So does anyone know how to contact Sun to get the latest firmware for my DVD-RAM drive?
I did contacted Matshita for this matter and they tell me to contact Sun.
I did review the Full Components List for the Ultra 40. The only DVD drives listed (Part No. 370-7970) are Panasonic UJ-485 and Teac DV-W28SLA-093. Both aren't capable of reading or writing DVD-RAM.
In some countries Panasonic uses Matshita as brand name.
I did a search on SunSolve with the keywords DVD firmware.
Sun supplies only firmware updates for two DVD readers: Toshiba DVD 1401 (fixes: unable to boot from Solaris 8 DVD) and Toshiba SD-C2732 (fixes: returns incorrect data).
I was unable to update the firmware of the SD-C2732 (Sun part) with the Sun patch. The drive was attached to an Ultra 10 (with an adapter). I ended attaching the drive to a PC and using a DOS boot floppy with the Toshiba flash program and the Sun firmware.
Regarding you problems with the drive: Have you tried another brand of media. The Ultra 40 is under warranty (GA date was February 14, 2006).
Use the contact information from your other thread.
If you search the net for firmware you can locate sites that offers region-code-free firmware for several drives. Usually they provide a flash program (requires creation of a DOS boot floppy). Using these programs/firmware voids your warranty. Maybe you can not revert the firmware upgrade.
These slimline drives have no jumpers, the installed firmware (of the drive) determines if the drive is master, slave, uses cable-select (CS) or reversed CS.

  • Are there any good DVD authoring programs for Mac now that Apple has discontinued DVD Studio and iDVD? I need to make DVDs that have interactive menus and such (Final Cut X and Compressor 4's DVD option is a little cheap). Any ideas?

Are there any good DVD authoring programs for Mac now that Apple has discontinued DVD Studio and iDVD? I need to make DVDs that have interactive menus and such (Final Cut X and Compressor 4's DVD option is a little cheap and doesn't provide any kind of professional DVD authoring). Any ideas?

This comes up a lot these days.
Practically speaking, there are really four options for the Mac platform: Toast (<$100),  Adobe Premier Productiom ($1,600 to buy or $50/month to rent),  find a copy of Final Cut Studio from 3rd  party (+/- $1,000 new) or a boxed edition of iLife to get iDVD ($50 - $90 on Amazon new).
The other question everyone has is how many OS versions before iDVD or FCS breaks? No one knows, but Apple has said they're no longer supporting these legacy apps. Of course, no one is mandated to upgrade to a new OS unless they buy a new computer. So if it works on a system, stay with it as long as it makes sense.
    Good luck.

  • Can anyone suggest a good external DVD-ROM drive?

My DVD/CD drive in my Mac Mini has given out, and i'd rather just get a good external drive than pay to have mine replaced. Can anyone suggest a good one that they know is compatible with Apple products?
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Amazon has the following Memorex external burner with usb2 and firewire for a bit under $100:
Memorex 32023288 DVD Double-Layer Recorder 16x16 Dual Format External Drive
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007OWASE/
Reviewer: "yankee_doctor" on Amazon says --
I am very pleased with the performance of this machine. I bought it to add dual layer dvd's and 16x burning to my aging Powermac G5 from Apple. It has worked perfectly for me and makes DVD's in about 3 minutes. A very nice touch. As a side note, I am a world traveler and I am planning on moving to London at the start of next year. I was afraid that it would not be able to go with me. But I contacted Memorex and it already is wired to work in the U.S. and Europe. That was a nice surprise. Buy this product, you will not be disappointed.
I can't vouch for it myself, but it might be worth googling for reviews of it.
