Msi fx 5700 ultra 5900xt compatibility

Hi
I recently bought a MSI fx5700 ultra to replace my ge force 4200 ti, However when I installed it is was a no go ran for about 10 seconds then the power switched of and the would not re start.  returned it to the shop who confirmed it was a dud then because no replacements are available loaned me a 5700 standard till they could get a new 5700 ultra.  ( the 5700 ran fine in my machine)  A few weeks went by then the shop contacted me informing me that could not get a 5700 ultra but would I be happy with a MSI 5900 xt which was satisfactory to me.  I installed the MSI 5900xt the machine started and windows xp loaded and detected the new hardware and all seamed fine until I went into a 3D game then strange things started to appear on the screen.  I re started the computer but even at the POST screen the screen was full of small vertical lines all over the screen and I could not get xp to load.  Back to the shop who again loaned me the 5700 standard which again worked fine.  and they confirmed the 5900xt was a faulty card.
My system is:
P4 2.53 gig 533 front system bus
ASUS p4pe motherboard AGP 4 only 1.5 volt
1 gig ram
Sound blaster live
a good quality power supply (thermo ??? 480 watt)
2x120 gig hard drives
cd writer.
My question are
1/ As I understand it both cards are backward compatible with agp 4 / 1.5 volt. is this true or an I damaging the cards by installing them into my asus p4pe motherboard?
2/ Is it common to fine a faulty batch of cards? I have been building my own computers for about 6 years with no hardware problems until the 5700 ultra drama.
3/ Can any one suggest any thing else I may be doing wrong?
PS all my system is standard eg not over clocked etc.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone may be able to give
Bob

  • MSI FX 5700 Ultra problem with linux

    Hi,
I know that linux are not officially suported by MSI VGA cards, but NVIDIA based VGA cards use to work under linux. I've got a problem with a recent purchase and until now I didn't found any answer.
Here is my problem, if anyone here have an idea :
I recently upgraded my video card Geforce 2 MX to a Geforce FX 5700 Ultra from MSI (FX 5700 Ultra TD128).
    I've an Athlon XP 2000,
    motherboard Gigabyte GA-7VAXP, 512 Mb,
    distrib Mandrake 9.2
    latest nvidia driver 5328
At startup after installation, Mandrake detected a new hardware, but it was not the right card name. The video test failed and X (graphic mode) didn't start.
Back to console mode, I discovered that even the console mode doesn't work properly : I have no cursor and the screen lines don't scroll up when the screen gets full (very hard to type commands or edit files).
I checked the XF86Config-4 : for me it seems ok. Actually, it didn't change from the previous card.
I've no errors in the XFree log (no lines with (EE)).
I went to the MSI site to look for a newer bios version, but there is'nt.
I tried both DVI and VGA connection with my LCD monitor, same thing.
I also tried running Knoppix (liveCD distrib), same prob.
I pasted below the message i've got on screen when I try to start X manually (this doesn't help much either) :
XIO:  fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
It seems to me that this graphic card simply doesn't work under linux.
Thanks a lot for any help.

To get  X to work with your LCD during the installation process append nofb as one of the installation options.
I have a 17" LCD so you might like to compare the relevant sections in your XF86Config with these:
    Section "Module"
       Load  "dbe"
       Load  "extmod"
       Load  "fbdevhw"
       Load  "glx"
            Load  "dri"
       Load  "record"
       Load  "freetype"
       Load  "type1"
    EndSection
(The Load "dri" gets removed prior to installing nvidia's Forceware drivers.)
    Section "Monitor"
       Identifier   "Monitor0"
       VendorName   "Monitor Vendor"
       ModelName    "CML174SX"
       DisplaySize  340   270
       HorizSync    24.0 - 80.0
       VertRefresh  56.0 - 75.0
       Option       "dpms"
    EndSection

  • GF 5700 Ultra, problems with KG7 Motherboard

    Hi,
    My system specs are:
    Athlon 1400 (t-bird, 133 bus)
    KG7-lite motherboard
    512Mb corsair memory (333, running at 266)
    MSI geforce 5700 ultra
    sound blaster live value
120 gig west dig, 80 gig western dig
I have had a fair few problems with this card, firstly it took me several hours to get it working.  When i first put it in the screen was pretty distorted.  I tried to install the latest nvidia drivers but they caused the screen to turn blank (signal but black screen) when windows came to the log on screen.
I reset my bios settings for my motherboard and got windows to boot although it was ni 4-bit colour mode. Eventually I was able to get the correct drivers installed and the card seems to be working OK.
When i turn certian settings on like "fast write" it causes the screen to blank out like previously mentioned.
Now its installed im not really satisfied with the quality but im putting this down to my fairly low spec CPU and motherboard which i hope to upgrade in the new year.
[edit] Morrowind, which is the only game i have tried, is now unplayable and i am unsure why.  The graphics right from the first screen are distorted. [/edit]
anyone else had any of these problems and know if there will be any fixes for this?
    cheers,
    Seb

    Seb,
The picture was exactly what I was looking for. You have everything bunched up on IRQ5. Your system does not have a chance of running correctly in that configuration.
your motherboard is too old to support APIC so you only get IRQs 0-15. To free up some IRQs, disable COM1, Com2, and Parallel Port if you are not using them.
You should not use PCI Slot 1 because it shares the IRQ with AGP Slot. You should not use PCI Slot 4 because it shares with the USB Controller. You should not use PCI Slot 5 because it shares with the Highpoint IDE Controller. The rest of the PCI Slots should be fine.
Make sure you load the latest Motherboard Drivers too.
    Take Care,
    Richard

  • Where to buy MSI 5700 Ultra???

    Hey everyone,
I've decided to uprgrade my ATI Radeon 8500 LE card to the MSI 5700 Ultra.  I'm fairly certain this is a considerable upgrade for the money... If I could find a retailer that sells it! Most places I've found are selling the 5700 and not the Ultra. If any of you know where I can find the best prices (if they can be found on pricewatch or pricegrabber, I have overlooked) and online retailers, I would appreciate it!

Have you tried [http://www.newegg.com] I know they sell MSI FX cards!

  • 5700 ultra BSOD and nv4_disp.dll

Just got a MSI 5700 Ultra yesterday and am now suffering random BSOD's (they all seem to mention NV4_disp.dll). I've reformatted the drive and done a clean install of XP Pro (with all the latest service pack stuff) and installed 53.04 detonators, to no avail.
    I'm running:
    2800XP Barton
    ASUS A7N8X Delux Mobo
    1GB 3200 Ram (TWINMOS)
I've changed most of the stuff recently(but it seemed fairly stable until I installed the 5700),
    Does anyone have ideas?
Oh, I've also got a 500W PSU, so I don't think it could be a power problem.
Hope someone can help before I kick it down the stairs!!!!!

  • Grafikerrors with the FX 5700 Ultra!

    Hi!
I have some serious problems with the Geforce FX 5700 Ultra from MSI!
Whenever I run a 3d application my card isn't able to show the right colors ...!Furthermore, there are a lot of clipping errors ...
I tried for the Grafikcard the ForceWare 52.16 (the latest) and the Detonator 41.09!
I also flashed my bios (Board:A7V-133) and I have the latest via drivers for the mainboard!
As Direct X driver I use the 9.0b, the test of drirect Draw and direct3d are successful!
Is it possible that my board is too old for the videocard?!
    Thanks for your help!
    Greetings,h3r0

Well, after looking through the user manual (.pdf) I find it doesn't have one. booo hiss.  But I found the following at amdmb.com which may give you something to try.
    Quote
    AGP 4X Drive Strength
Default is Auto. Leave it on auto unless you need to change the AGP Drive Strength(see below), then set it to manual.
AGP Drive Strength P Ctrl "C" and AGP Drive Strength N Ctrl "E"
When AGP 4X Drive strength is set to manual you can choose settings of "0" "1" "2" ..."F". If you have an Nvidia based Geforce Video card, you can try changing this value to DA or EA to increase stability in games. These values are obtained by combining the individual values for the AGP Drive Strength P Ctrl "C" and AGP Drive Strength N Ctrl "E" settings. Once you get into the BIOS and see how this setting works it will become clearer.
    AGP Fast Write
Default value is Disabled. This feature enables the Fast Writes feature on the latest video cards for improved graphics performance.... many people find this feature to make the system unstable.
(Editors' note: I enable this option on my GeForce2 GTS 32DDR

  • Msi fx 5600 ultra not on msi website

I just ordered a msi fx 5600 ultra, and I kinda worried now because there is no mention of the fx 5600 ultra on offical MSI Site. I see the regular fx 5600, but the the ultra.  anyone know what the deal is here?  Also after reading some reviews on the ultra vs ati 9500 pro, i might just get an ati card since the ultra falls way short of ati.  whats your opinion?

    kal,
I think you should wait till the card arrives and you test it and see what you think. I am sure the card will give you more than enough eye candy.

  • Problems MSI GeForceFX 5950 Ultra

    PC specifications:
Satellite PSU 500W (422)   this one is really cheap...
PC ATX CASE with 3 exaust fans (1 pci / 1 lateral / 1 back)
    MOBO ABIT NF7-S
Atlhon XP Barton 2.5 ghz (thermaltake vulano 9)
2x 512mb ram (1024) samsung PC3200 in dual channel mode.
    HD Maxtor ATA133 80GB 7200rpm
    LG CDRW
    Mouse MS blue optical USB
    PS2 PC clone gamepad
    Keyboard and flopydisk
Problem - Some freaking FPS slowdown on any game with any video quality settings (battlefield, farcry, doom3, Wining Eleven 7, Need for Speed Underground, Unreal 2004, Jedi Academy and others).
What I already have checked - I just got my new video card, msi geforcefx 5950 ultra, and i got some minor stability problems. First of all I would like to say that I'm no newbie and I already checked:
    1. I got all lastest bios and drivers: from my MOBO chipset (nforce2) and video card (from the MSI site, not from the nvidia site).
    2. I think it couldn't be any compability problems with my MOBO chipset (it is nvidia too) and video card.
    3. Any thermal problems (I'm very paranoic about that), got 3 fan\exaust on the pc case, and i only use thermaltake coolers/exaust.
    4. My ram memory clock it is set to 333mhz just like my fsb for more stability.
    5. The video card IRQ it is fine.
    6. Bios configuration. I've test my AGP settings with and without AGP Fastwrites and PCI enchant (other bios options u guys have told me to leave as default like agp voltage and clock settings).
    7. My PSU is 500w (422) and the I didn't connect anything on the power line that goes to the card.
    8. I used driver cleaner 3.2 to clean my last msi fx 5200 drivers.
    so here we go...
Question one - I've read all the posts just like mine, and seems that my problem it is with the PC PSU, but my PSU it is 500W, it was pretty cheap   but it is 500W and u guys and the video card manual have told me that the minimum required it is 350w, well the specs of the PSU it is +3.3v 28A, +5V 50A (230W), +12V 18A (216W). I saw in some post that my card would need a 24A on the 12V line, and a 32A would be the real deal for overclocking, is that true? Will I have to buy another one???
Question two - By the way I used to have a msi geforcefx 5200 tdr-128, and when I changed the Video cards I just unistaled the video card drivers, is it enought? Or there is some freaking windows registration of my 5200 driver corrupting my 5950 performance. Will I have to Format my PC???
Question tree - Why when I try to an output video resolution below 640x480 to ANY TV (already tested on 5 TV) with S-video or RCA cables, the video files (divx/xvid...) get all overlapped???
Question fuor - If I change my drivers from de MSI nVidia to the original nvidia, will I get more stability???
So can u guys help me... thanks

1.) You should be ok with 18 amps on the 12v rail, but that is bare minimum!
If you have poor airflow in your case, the power supply's efficiency will drop considerably due to excess heat. The voltages/amps can drop below acceptable levels and cause instability.
2.) It is possible that leftover registry entries and bad keys are crapping up your registry. If it's been a while since you've reformatted and you've installed/uninstalled lots of software since then, it might be something to consider.
However, I reccomend that you dump MSI drivers for the time being, and try the latest Forceware, go here for the latest  nVidia Drivers you can also visit the archive if you'd like an earlier version here http://ftp://download1.nvidia.com/Windows/
Consider this procedure and use at your own risk.
Make sure to have the latest drivers downloaded.
I.) Disable System Restore and then procede to Control Panel and remove the VGA drivers. DO NOT REBOOT
II.)Run driver cleaner (I click the clean button at least twice) NOW REBOOT
III.) Ignore the hardware wizard and go directly to where you have the latest drivers and run the setup.
You may want to consider fresh chipset drivers.
    3.) Not a clue
4.) Possible, but the overall condition of your OS, the process in wich you install drivers, and proper cooling, can have either an isolated or accumulative effect on overall stability of your system.
And Just to let you know, MSI employees don't visit this sight, a simple bump would eventually get someones attention (that's willing and able to answer your questions)

  • Anyones knows MSI FX 5700 memory type & speed?

Anyway my memory speed is at 550 mhz. Is this correct? Scored 12435 on 3dmark01SE & 3428 on 3dmark03. Quite ok isit?

    the bench mark is good
there is not any reference to the core or mem clock of vga card and with thease bench marks your graphic card is work very well.
the geforce fx 5700 ultra bechmark is 14000 on 3d mark 2001 se and 4000 on 3d mark 2003

  • Msi 6570 delta ilsr/msi 6590 kt4 ultra

Hi could anyone here tell me if it is worth upgrading from a MSI 6590 KT4 ULTRA to a MSI 6570 Delta Ilsr Mainboard . Thanks in advance.

the good thing with nforce is the locked agp and pci
so as that cpu uses 13 as a multiplier you might be able to o/c it ok but not much more that the 180 or so you should get now on the old board
the main benefit with the board is with pc 3200 and an xp 2500 now as new cpu are locked
as most of them will get up around 200 fsb x11
best of all you would get soundstorm
but read as boards fussy on ram and you did not post details as asked

  • 5700 ultra full screen overlay on s-video out

    Hi everybody,
I have a Feforce FX 5700 ultra with vga out and s-video out.
I have it set up so that my vga out controls my monitor as its primary display, and the s-video is connected to my tv.
screen is set to clone and full screen video set to secondat display (tv)
this all works fine and the full screen overlay transfers the picture of movies and some games to my tv.
However I can't figure out how to set it up so the video overlays on the tv, while the game I want to be playing on the primary monitor doesn't.
What I mean is that when i start the video it overlays on the tv, but as soon as I start a game, that full screen overlay takes over.
I know there's a way to edit program-specific settings , but does anyone know what exactly to edit, and how to make it work so i can watch full screen video on my tv while playing a full screen game on my monitor?

You cant watch full screen video on the tv while playing  full screen games on the monitor...
This is a limitation of the video card and not a problem with the drivers or something else.

  • FX 5700 Ultra - Final Fantasy XI

Just to get opinion, my video card, the nVidia 5700 Ultra should have NO trouble running Final Fantasy XI right?  I'm running it at high resolution, but I don't think it should have ANY trouble handling that.
I've had a number of posts on here trying to troubleshoot why my frames get a little jerky here and there, just trying to make sure that there's no "your card isn't powerful enough" kinda thing.  I would assume with the 5700 Ultra the frames would be pretty smooth all the time.

What he means is, if your monitor came with it's own software - install it. Some monitors need a little tweaking to perform to the higher standards of the latest video cards. If not, go to the advanced tab in display and you should be able to make finer adjustments there!

  • MSI KT4V-L Ultra Power Problems

    Hi,
Sorry if this is a dumb question but I need an answer quickly and this seemed the best place to ask...
I have just built a system with the following specs:
    MSI KT4V-L Ultra
    Athlon XP 2100
    256 DDR 2700
350 W PS (came with a fairly exspensive case)
    32MB TNT 2
Built it - fired up no problem with case open. Installed Windows 98 no problem. Installed a few more items of software - no problem. Everything running - no crashes/stability issues.
I then re-attatched the sides and front of the case, and turn the PC on. Nothing happens. I turn off the switch at the back of the power supply and then turn it on again. Upon pressing the power button on the case the Diagnostic LEDs + case power LED flash very briefly and then nothing. The Power supply fan does not turn.
Does this problem sound like the mobo or the PSU?  I know the next stage is to test the PSU on its own but unfortunatley I can't do that from work!
Has anyone come across a problem like this before? My instinct tells me it is the PSU as I have changed nothing on the mobo - Any help/advice really appreciated!

Thanks - I'm really hoping it's not the mobo.
Would that explain why there is power for a fleeting moment before it dies?
If I try the power switch at the front again after one failure nothing at all happens - until I turn the Power supply switch off and then on again...
What is the easiest way to test the switch - would shorting the two Power Switch pins on the motherboard do it?
    (Is this a common problem?!?)
