  • MSI 6385 AGP problems

I have an MS 6385 motherboard running Windows 98 with 256MB RDRAM and a Geforce 4 MX440 Graphics Card. The problem is that the card should run in AGP 4X, but for some reason, in Windows it says it's running in PCI mode. Someone mentioned to get some VIA chipset drivers, but this motherboard doesn't support that chipset. Despite numerous attempts fiddling around in the BIOS, looking on this site for drivers which evidently don't exist, I cannot get the card to run in AGP 4X mode. Please help as this is one hell of annoying problem. Thankyou for your help.

Since the board has an intel chipset the VIA 4in1 is not for you.
You need the intel inf, then reinstall DirectX and the VGA drivers.
You should be running in AGP mode after this.

So, with the 9600XT card installed, when you switch on your PC, you see the BIOS POST screen/logo, then the Windows loading screen, then your screen goes black?
Yes! The first time I installed the 9600XT Windows loaded normally. After I restarted it goes like you said - screen goes black after Windows loading screen, but hard disk keeps working like it continued loading Windows.

Can you boot into Windows Safe Mode? Press F8 (or tap a few times) before the Windows loading screen appears, to show the Windows startup menu.
If you can boot into Safe Mode, uninstall the Via Unichrome display drivers, and then restart. Can Windows start up normally then?
If not, boot again into Safe Mode, and install the ATI display drivers. Then restart. Does it work then?
I tried ALL that three weeks ago. It didn't help. Yea also I reinstalled OS a week ago and when it should have entered Windows for the first time after instalation it did the same - put monitor into hibernation mode. Then I came here. So the next thing I'm gonna do is clearing CMOS like NovJoe suggested me. But somehow I feel it won't help either. It's girlfriend's pc so I need to go to her place again to do this. It started to annoy me. So I'm gonna do this and then maybe if it doesn't work I should flash the BIOS. I've never done that so I'm a bit hesitant and after reading all BIOS topics here... Thanks for your help!

What is the native resolution of that monitor? You say the monitor is 17.1", but according to search results its a 20" widescreen monitor?
Yes it's Samsung T200 20" widescreen monitor. Though report the program generated says it's 17.1" which is strange.
In Device Manager it stands T200 which is correct. T200 max res. is 1680x1050. With onboard VGA i can run only 1280x1024 and it doesn't have DVI output.

  • Msi 6600gt AGP, broken image when starting up!?, driver´s or hard problem...

    hello everybody:
    config: p4 3.0 prescott
              mobo asus p4 800...
              psu topower 400
the thing is that sometimes when starting up windows it givers a broken image, like lot´s of artifacts.
I´m gone try a nv detonator clean up since it´s the second card i´ve tried with this config´s.
    any piece of advice??...

I know your problem. Solution is very easy.
Go to nvidia display options, and under the tab "Digital Flat panel Settings", select Monitor scaling or Aspect Ratio scaling. If you choose "Adapter scaling" then you get that fuzzy screen while bootup.
Also, i think latest bios for NX6600gt agp from msi solved that problem, use Liveupdate utility3 to obtain it.

Yes I managed exactly that. I've been out of the computer building business for a while so I didn't know the graphics ports had changed.

(The manual sais something about the port supporting 8x agp though? )

  • Msi ti 4200 problems

i installed a msi 4200 agp video card today and have had nothing but problems. on the first boot xp did not try to install new hardware. In the display properties it did not recognize the video adapter. i tried to intsall the drivers from the installation cd but it said it was not the right files and did not recognize the path. on the second reboot no picture after windows boots. i have a gigabyte mb ga-7vrxp and am upgrading from a pci video card. any help would be much appreciated.

Thatz Y... I won't switched to XP until it has really settle down...
lambethduke, I know where you've got things wrong and its a common mistake as I have accidentally did it myself before ... You must have direct right click on your Display adapter driver and un-install... This will cause the screen to go blank during startup whenever you wanna install the drivers again, though you may be able to see part of the windows starting up... Next time, juz un-install the driver by double clicking on the driver and inside the profile click on un-install and this problem will never exist to you anymore...
    All the Best... :D!!!

    Hello!
Don't think you have to flash the BIOS. Nor do I think there is a problem with the mobo.
Two main reasons for boot problems are:
PSU with not enough grunt - please say something about it.
Memory timings are too tight - don't have any special or ultra settings.
The power cable has not been attached to the graphics card - don't know really if it is needed but I think so.
Please note that a weak PSU might not reveal itself til the power cable is connected.
About flashing BIOS, if you use the LiveUpdate program that came on the MSI install CD, it is no more trouble than upgrading any driver. But please make sure you get the right BIOS, and that it solves the issue you got.

  • I modded my MSI 6600GT AGP

I took my MSI 6600GT AGP all apart to mod it. I thought I would share what I found out in case anything wants to mod theirs also.
I didn't want to flash the bios for the temperature, so I attached this probe to the GPU.
    http://www.bestbyteinc.com/prodinfo.asp?number=SEN-CNU-001
The bridge chip uses a thin foil thermal pad, which I replaced with Artic Silver Ceramique. The GPU heatsink uses what I think is a thick thermal compound, it didin't come off like a pad. It might also have some silver content because of it's grayish color. There are four approx. 1/16" white thermal pads for the memory.
I don't think both of the heatsinks are copper. Because when I removed the heatsink I could see in the threads of where the support arms get screwed into and it wasn't the same color as copper. I think they are copper colored anodized aluminum or maybe even copper covered aluminum if that is even possible. My best guess is they are not copper. The color is slightly wrong to be true copper.
To take the main heatsink off.
You need to press down slightly on one side of the back support bar and swing if off of the post. If you look at the support bar both ends are different. One side has little metal nubs that need to clear the post to swing it off. The other end is shaped like a C and just rides on the groove in the other post.
After you take off that bar, there is another flat bar that has a pad in the middle to protect the components. That bar just lifts straight up and off the posts. Remember which way you took it off, it is very important. The components make litte dents in the pad. So putting it back on the exact same way fits the components in the same dents they made when the bar was first installed.
Once you have both support bars removed, you need a flat screwdriver to unscrew both posts from the heatsink. At this point I don't believe the heatink is attached anymore to the board even with the posts still attached. Once you take off the posts flip the card over holding the heatsink as you do so. I gently twisted the heatsink and it came right off. You need to unplug the fan at this point.
I took four copper slugs around the size of a penny, and thinned them down to get the right height of the pads. The pads were removed to be replaced by the copper slugs. It took a very long time to do this. I would take one and rest it on the memory. Then I would use a small straight edge ruler to test the height with the GPU. The copper slugs have to be at the same exact height or slightly lower then the GPU or the heatsink will not make proper contact with the GPU.
What I found by doing this is, without having the support bar on the video card the GPU is not on a flat plane to the memory chips. So thinning the slugs down the right height was hard to do because of this.
Once I got the slugs down to the right height I used Arctic Silver thermal epoxy to glue each one to the memory. After that I used the Artic Silver Ceramique on the GPU and on the copper slugs. Then I attached the thermal probe with a little dab of Artic Silver Ceramique on the tip to contact the side of the GPU. I used double sided thermal tape to stick the probe to the board and to the area on the side of the GPU.
I then re-attached the heatsink in the reverse order I removed it. I checked under the heatsink with a light and everything looked like it was making good contact.
My idle temp with the probe is around 34C, stressing the card with benchmarks the highest I have seen it is around 55C.
The copper slugs didn't really gain me all that much overclocking the memory, but that could just be the memory has reached its limits. The copper slugs will probably help the memory last a little longer then the pads. I wouldn't suggest using the slugs to anyone. It is just too much work, a lot of risk and doesn't really gain you anything.

fw off, agp set to 4x.... many times tried this with various drivers (also setting the 2d and 3d speed to the same and many other trix...)
also tried to unplug devices... no help.... as I said if I help the cooling with really biiiiiiig fan underneath the card, it will not freeze... but 12cm fan at full speed generates looooooots of noise ))
it seems that aftermarket cooling (e.g. Zalman vf700cu) is the only solution
thanx and have a nice day
Here is something I just thought of. There are a lot of components on the board. There might a possibility one of them is not working very well when it heats up.
The GPU could also be overheating, but you have to understand something here.
The 6600GT has automatic core slowdown if it gets too hot so how could you have damaaged it? If you didn't put on enough thermal compound or the heatsink wasn't tight enough the core would slowdown to protect itself from heat damage.
If it was damaged by heat going by everything I know so far, it would probably only be damaged in the first few seconds right after you turn the computer on, but even then that would probably only happen if there was no heatsink attached at all.
Another thing to consider. I have an idle temperature of around 34C using the probe, the internal temperature would be slightly higher so lets say it's around 40C. The highest load temperature I have seen has been around 55C with the probe, so lets say inside its around 60C inside.
Those temperatures using the stock heatsink are very good.  So what I am saying is even if you get a new heatsink, it might lower the temperature a bit on the card...but I doubt it will help with any heat related problems your describing.
If that stock "heatsink is on correctly" it should be more then enough to keep the card cool.
Maybe you should take the chance and flash the bios so you can see the actual internal temperature of the card. At this point it really doesn't matter because you can't return it anyway, but there is always a slight risk flashing a bios.
There is a forum here that will explain flashing the bios if you decide to do it.

  • Getting a replacement fan & heatsink module for my MSI NX6800GT (agp)

    Hi all,
I got a bit of a problem, the fan on my MSI NX6800GT (agp) sounds like a dog, after removing the card and having a look, it appears that the spindle that holds the fan in place has worn out (the fan seems to drop down onto the plastic and thats what is making the noise) . Its buggered basically. Do any of you fine people know of where I can get a decent replacement fan and heatsink?
    All help appreciated
    John

OK, I ordered one of those  nv silencers, I thought about contacting MSI like you guys said but after reading about this product I thought what the hell . . . £20 but worth it.
    http://www.gladiatorcomputers.com/ProductDetail.aspx?StockCode=ACCARTREV4NVS53&Link=SearchResults
It came yesterday, so last night I installed it, fitted well, one small thing on the instructions, there is an "L" shaped metal bracket called a passive heatsink plate, now I know my **** from my elbow but could I work out where this was supposed to go? . . . NO.
Anyway it appears that I dont need this bit, why cant they just say "this bit is optional". Kinda scary fitting stuff like this when youre as green as me.
Anyway, all went well. Thank you all.
    Regards
    John

How to set AGP so my MSI 6600GT (AGP) is stable?

    Quote from: jlpicard1412 on 27-February-05, 07:08:30
OK, that's the question .... how do I make my system stable if I overclock the CPU and want the graphics card stable too ... boils down to the AGP clock ... what do I need to do ... motherboard is K8T800 Neo 2 .... what about Cell Menu settings?
Tried using 3dmark2001 and 03 ... neither worked.
    I thought standard AGP was 66MHz .....
    JLP
    Yes standard is 66MHz.
I did a little bit of research on your motherboard as far as I know it has AGP spped lock. Which means no matter how you set the speed of your CPU, the AGP should always stay at 66Mhz. There might be a manual override in the bios to raise it higher then 66, but you don't really gain anything raising it higher then 66Mhz.
I also read your motherboard might have problems keeping it locked at 66Mhz. So you might want to check to see if they have released any bios updates.
Most nVidia cards will work fine with higher then 66 so your problems might be something else. I'm not saying to set it higher I'm just saying they usually don't have problems running on a faster AGP bus.

  • MSI NX6600 AGP Card & MSI 7008, VIA PT880 Motherboard Compatible?

    Hello all!
    Need a little help today.
I have a MSI NX6600 AGP Card & MSI 7008, VIA PT880 Motherboard that are giving me some headaches. If I try any NVIDIA driver above version 71.25 the graphics (2d and 3d) are very badly distorted. The desktop screen is unreadable and any software I try to run looks warped and garbled. I am using an Antec case with a 350w Antec PSU. Both the motherboard and video card are from MSI. This is the second video card I try, I RMA'd the first one. If I use an older AGP card (Ti4200) all graphics display perfectly. Is there something I can do to fix the problem? Is there a compatibility problem between the VIA chip and the NVIDIA 6600 chip?
I'd appreciate a push in the right direction!
    Thanks!

    Hi!
There seems to be some problems with certain setups, see: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=3612
I had these 2d-issues with 6600GT and RMA'd the card, hope I'll get newer revision... none of the fixes helped.

  • NX6600GT AGP problem

Hi guys and thank u for all the help u are giving.
I just baught an MSI NX6600GT AGP card and I have the same problems as everyone here. I just need to get some things clear before i return it. I have a 400W psu (so it sais) but my +12V amps is 12A (i'm not very sure). More specificaly my psu has these values written on it.
    +5V 30A +3.3V 14A
    +12V 12A -12V 1.0A
    SVSB 3.0A -5V 0.5V
I don't know it's brand since it's not written on it.
When i put the card in and yes i pluged the extra power cord the first think i saw was the boot screen corrypted with artifacts. After i turned it off and on for a few times it booted up clearly.
I then run 3dMark03 and scored 7500 wich it's seems normal. Then I play NFS Most Wanted and i run very nice, good fps at high graphics settings.
Then when i got to desktop the image got corrupted with artefacts again. I tried reinstalling the card, same problems. I pluged one rail alone on the card same problems. I also unpluged all the case fans and a ccfl light but no change. Either it boots corrupted ot it gets corrupted lateron. Even if i won't play anything the desktop gets corrupted after about 10mins. The temp was 47c when the 3DMark03 test finished and 37V when idle.
I also removed the extra firewire card and audigy 2 card from the pci slots. I haven't quite yet trying running the card at 4x agp.
    My specs are as follows.
    AMD Athlon xp 2600+ Thoroughbred
MSI K7N2 Delta (With a later Bios update)
    2 x 512 Ram dual channel
    Win xp pro sp2
    80GB and 250GB HDD
1 dvd rom and 1 dvd writer.
Also i was using an 9600pro before that for one and a half years with no problems.
I really think (and i hope so) that it's a power supply problem (only 12A at +12V?).
I want an opinion whether it's the no-name power supply that is causing the glitses.
I forgot to tell u that when i put the other card back on everything works works fine.
Thank u. (Sorry for my bad english)

    fade,
Try putting the card in another comp to see if the problem followed the Vid Card or stays with the comp.
    Take Care,
    Richard

  • Msi 6600gt Agp + Win Xp

    Hey guys,
Just brought an msi 6600gt agp and it is awsome...
Having a bit of trouble with the D.O.T software.
It seems that i have enabled it, i try to change the core and memory speeds and
save settings. I log out of xp and log back in to check if the setting have saved
and they have. But, everytime i restart the computer it just goes back to the
    default settings. Is this normal?
The other thing is if i use o/c tools like coolbits, can i still enable d.o.t so that my
card is not clocked when i'm on my desktop surfing?
    Thanks in advance,
    Pooki3

    oops..
sorry i didn't make my self clear. I also unticked the d.o.t  feature and bumped the
core and memory.. saved it and restarted the computer again...
It just goes back to defaults again...
    Anyone got the same issue?
