MSI GE60 0NC-622UK and Windows 8.1 secondary HDD sleep bug

Hi All!
I'm struggling with this problem for a long time now. (MSI GE60 0NC-622UK, OS: Windows 8.1, BIOS: 5.14)
There're similar topics on the net:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/58ae1ed5-c643-41ba-95ec-ffa5fbed16af/win-8-keeps-to-shut-down-my-hdds-why?forum=W8ITProPreRel
http://www.eightforums.com/drivers-hardware/4710-secondary-hard-drive-goes-sleep.html
I bought an 256GB SSD in it, so the 750GB HDD is now the secondary one. And the problem is, no matter what I set in Advanced Power Options (never, 0, 600) the OS always puts the hdd into sleep after around 10 seconds (the original windows 8.0 also did the same). The problem is with this the I HAVE to wait couple of seconds when the hdd spins up next time! :(
Only this one helped: http://lytondarque.com/2013/03/29/prevent-hd-sleep-in-windows-8/
It's a small utility called KeepAliveHD (I could only install the v1.4.1 version, but it's working fine.)
So I'm curious is there any other solution beside using an external utility.
Thanks for helping!

Power Consumption
The Western Digital Scorpio Blue 750GB actually does okay in power consumption compared to competitors. Its read/write and startup draw numbers are in line with competitors; its idle numbers and random read are noticeably lower. The observed differences are unlikely to make a noticeable impact on battery life. It is worthwhile to note that during our tests when running as a secondary drive the power management seemed overactive in that it would frequently initiate its sleep mode. When this happened the drive would park its head and spin down after only a few seconds.
I think the problem is inherent in the design of the drive. The only way around it is by using a program like you have mentioned, unfortunately.

  • Looking for an 802.11AC Wifi adapter for MSI GE60-0NC

I want to buy an 802.11AC Wifi module for my MSI GE60-0NC to replace the 802.11N adapter it ships with. It must be compatible with windows 8.1 (as the one it shipped with has serious issues unless I disable N and run it as a G adapter). Do not want to use an external USB adapter either. Is there a compatibility list somewhere or does anyone know of an adapter which will suit these requirements?

For my GE60-2OC i bought an Intel Centrino Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 + Bluetooth, it works perfectly.
this card need 2 antenas, (there is 2 antenas in the GE60), and just download the drivers and install Intel drivers.

  • MSI GE60 0NC Problems After Upgrade

    Hi,
Recently downgraded my MSI GE60 0NC from Windows 8 to Windows 7. Had some issues with the wireless connectivity. I then flashed the laptop to Windows 7 EC controllers. It was then working after this. I then purchased a Samsung 840 Pro SSD 512GB and Corsair Vengeance 16GB. After installing the SSD I then proceeded to do a fresh install of Windows 7. After downloading the wireless drivers I am being told that the drivers may be out dated. I dont understand what the issue is as the did the exact same procedure as before.
Can anyone help me out please as the laptop is useless at the moment

Thanks for the reply, check the first thing i wrote, i explained it a bit, also check the screenshot. I think that could be the problem, but im not that good with laptops so im not sure.. "MSI suite" cant find my motherboard so the program wont execute..
edit: i've already tried the SCM that you linked, i get some errors with net framework so it wont execute after the setup..

  • Unlock BIOS for MSI GE60 0NC

    Hi Svet!
I want to unlock BIOS of my MSI GE60 0NC . (You have already helped me recently in other threads as well )
    - bios is: w8_E16GAIMS.514
    - firmware is: w8_16GAEMS1.505
    I need the following features:
    - set the CPU voltage for the different states
    - set the GPU (nVidia) voltage for the different states
    - to be able to set the fan level (like you did here : https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=168727.0 ) for the different states
The goal is that I can have a quite laptop (thanks to undervolting and modified fan speeds).
What else can I get? (just send me a PM, if it's better for you)
    Thank You!

    unclock BIOS: can be done
    CPU voltage setting: not possible
GPU voltage setting: bios can't control dedicard vga, also no voltage is possible by bios
FAN control: not possible by BIOS, but via EC. and would be static[not changeble on the fly
    Hi Svet!
    - gpu thing is not important: I can do it with nvidiainspector (not lower the voltages, of course, but setting a lower power state)
    1. - fan control: what're your recommend settings for this? (the goal is a silent laptop, as far as possible) I thought about that the lowest fan speed would be good around 72 Celsius. What do you think?
Right now, with the official bios and with Turbo disabled on the CPU via OS, if I see a movie with MPC-HC + MadVR (highest settings, which uses a lot of dGPU) the CPU temp is around 63 Celsius (of course in this case the fan isn't working on the lowest state)
    2. - cpu voltage setting: well, I'm not happy Can you do that I could set the voltages through a program, like ThrottleStop? (Right now it's not working.)
(I'm using CPUGenie for this purpose on my old MSI GX620 )
    3. - what other settings will be appear in the unlocked bios?
    Thanks!

  • MSI GE60 2OC-014NE - Install Windows 7 or 8 on new hard drive

    Hi forum
So I just bought the new MSI GE60. I installed my hybrid harddrive in it easily. Now I wanted to install a fresh windows 7 on it. Is it possible?
And if not, how do I install a fresh windows 8 on it, without spending extra money on the OS? Windows 8 came with the laptop, but without a disk.
And what is your opinion? Should I use windows 8 or 7 on it? (I really hate the looks and feel of windows 8.. It's way more complicated and non-user-friendly than 7..)
I hope you can help me out
    Best regards
    Aleksander

The least problems would be installing Win8 a it came with it (your key is embedded in the bios by the way) but I'd also prefer Win7. According to MSI downgrading to 7 should work with the EC of the Win8 version. As drivers and utilities are available for this model and Win7 it should work: http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GE60-2OC.html#download
Be sure to install DotNetFX40Client and SCM as that is needed to make the machine work properly.

  • MSI K9N Neo board- and Windows 2003 R2

    Hello,
I am having some compatibility issues with running a K9N Neo board and Windows 2003 r2
--I cant get core center to run
--I cant get audio/sound to work, it is all installed except for one thing.
so then i killed by loading XP drivers that it did not like.
Does anyone have a list of the minmum drivers off my CD that i should install to get it going, or are they on the MSI site for W2k3?  I could not find them.
This machine works totally fine with XP and Vista.
    thanks

That is mostly correct, absolutely. But it happens that Microsoft thought-up some security measure or two that prohibits some - for example - updating procedures. Here is an example, but I doubt that is your problem. Please note the kb number, you don't have to learn Swedish.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922582/sv
Modificacion: Very few companies do I believe produce special 2003 drivers. Don't think I ever saw any MSI ones, anyway. Isn't it enough that XP and Vista works? Those are better for gaming, entertainment, VOIP and such.

  • MSI GE60 0NC black screen after updating to windows 8.1

Hey, guys! I updated my laptop last night to windows 8.1 and everything went smoothly until the final boot wherein, after signing in to my account, there's only a black screen and mouse cursor. I tried finding solutions online like using sfc but it only fixes it for several minutes. Only the task manager works. Please help me.

    Hello @emoakaely,
I understand that after doing the Windows 8.1 update you are not able to access your computer and you are inquiring as to how to unistall it. I am providing you with an HP Support document: Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 8), which wil walk you through how to restore your computer back to a point in time before you ran the update. This will in essence reverse the update for you.
***This will not affect your personal files it will only restore your computer's operating system back to before the update.
I hope I have answered your question to your satisfaction. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great weekend!
Please click the "Thumbs Up" on the bottom right of this post to say thank you if you appreciate the support I provide!

  • MSI GE60 0ND BIOS and EC Request

My System (GE60 0ND-228XTH) came with FreeDos pre-installed.
    BIOS Version: E16GAIMS.10F
    BIOS Build:     12/18/2012 15:20:43
    EC Version:    16GAEMS Ver4.04
    EC Build:        04/26/2012
The real need of this request is to fix the Wireless Connection Drop issue (happens randomly or after waking up) occurred in Windows 8 OS.
    I have tried ...
      - Every combination of BIOS/EC that are provided in the official MSI page and compatible with my System.
      - Every SCM that is compatible with Windows 8 OS.
      - Any solution about Connection Drop issue in Windows 8 OS.
    but still no luck.
The best bet is to use
     - E16GAIMS.10F   BIOS
     - 16GAEMS1.505  EC
Though the problem still persist, the frequency of occurrence is less than other approaches.
Since this above EC firmware is for Windows 8 System, so this is not the best workaround for my system.
That is why my assumption came up with BIOS/EC and made this request.
This problem is NEVER shown in the Windows 7 OS and any Linux Distributions.
Also, can you add any updates possible for BIOS and EC.
I will make a donation as soon as possible after your confirmation.
    Thank in advance.
Edit: Added Current BIOS Configuration Screen.

its probably wifi driver related or something specified for win8
    try different wifi drivers
I already tried many drivers from the MSI itself, Intel, even other Notebook Manufacturers, but still not working.
I have tested Windows 8 in my friend's notebook(DELL) that has similar Wireless Adapter and everything working fine without issues like mine, so that means Windows 8 is not the culprit.

  • MSI GE60 2OE, upgraded to windows 8.1, now back at 8.0

Bought my son a laptop and added all the games and what not that he likes, as well I updated the OS to Windows 8.1.  All of this went well, and the laptop worked fine, but I ran in to an issue that I just couldn't live with.
At home I have a WHS2011 server, after upgrading the laptop to Windows 8.1, it modified the EFI and system reserve partitions, actually moving one of them from the front of the drive, to in between the C and D drive.  Disk Management shows 100% free space in these partitions.  Anyways, the issue is that I could no longer do a BMR backup to the server, it was telling me my drive was to full (meaning those hidden partitions were too full.  There is a lot of info on the net about this and how to correct it, but to do so was a little different for my situation considering it had move one to the back of the drive, more or less, and they showed 100% free space.
I decided to give a try, the steps in the Windows 8.1 FAQ that tell how to get back to windows 8 without a full system restore or use the Restoration disks that I had created originally.  You have to swipe the right side, select change system settings, update/recover windows, and then choose a recovery option.  I chose to do the refresh, which from my research was something that tried to fix issues, but wasn't anything major, it isn't supposed to affect your personal files.  However, MSI says this will get it back to Windows 8.0.  I did this this morning and it seems to have worked, at least to a point to where I can now do my BMR backup to my server.
It didn't move the hidden partitions back to where they were, but now WHS2011 will do a backup with everything selected instead of just drives C and D.  It reinstalled ALL of the bloatware that I had removed, added everything back to the desktop, and left everything I had added as well.  Games that were installed on the D drive were still there and still fully functional.  Steam and the games it downloaded to the C drive were gone.  The windows.old directory that the upgrade to 8.1 created was still there on the C drive and a directory that appears to be remnants of Windows 8.1 upgrade appear to be there as well.
This will all be easy enough to clean up, I'm just happy that my server is now happy with my son's new laptop.  Also, under computer properties, it does show windows 8, and WEI is available, which was done away with in 8.1.

this entire system was running with a different brand mobo (just upgraded to this msi-7125) and was running great!!
however when i installed windows xp media center edition 2005, things where working great.  that is until i installed the nforce system drivers from the disk that MSI provided me. once i installed the ethernet driver,ide-sw driver, network controller the ask me for a reboot after install was done,  when the system restarted i got all the way the windows xp splash screen or loading screen.  at that point windows stops loading stays on the loading screen for about 10 minutes, then the computer shuts off.
i have tried running memtest and had no errors, im positive that my psu is capable of handling my components.
i'm really stuck on this one, any help would great thanx again!!!
    Sam

You should be able to get into Windows through safe mode. From here uninstall the drivers and restart. You should hopefully be able to get into Windows normally now. Get hold of the latest drivers from the Nvidia web site and try them.
Also check both Ethernet controllers are enabled in the BIOS.
