MSI GE60 2OC-225NL

Hello,
I bought the GE60 2OC-225NL laptop.
On the site it shows pictures of a keybord with backlight.
When i press the button in the top left corner (next to fan) nothing happends.
I reinstalled Windows 8 Pro on my machine because i wanted a clean install.
I read something about the backlight not working on this laptop?
First thing comes to mind: Why does it have the button for it?
Also im going to upgrade BIOS and Firmware, do i have to do this in a certain order? (first BIOS then Firmware?)
Also it shows a warning on the website, something about Windows 7 BIOS etc (same for Firmware)
How do i know if i can flash the BIOS and Firmware supported for Windows 8.1 (wich i have installed now).
Thanks!
Greetings,
Arjan

Also when i have my laptop plugged in to the power (is full charged 100%) my power led is blinking blue/orange.
Is this supposed to happen? > Btw where can i find a manual for my specific MSI laptop?
I hope someone can answer these questions.
I found the manual and it says:
- This keyboard is equipped with flash keyboard LEDs which
are mounted beneath the keyboard.
- Press this button repeatedly to recurrently switch the
keyboard LED on; or set the keyboard LED illumination to
Gaming Mode; or switch the keyboard LED off.
So, where are my lights?

  • MSI GE60 2OC-014NE - Install Windows 7 or 8 on new hard drive

    Hi forum
So I just bought the new MSI GE60. I installed my hybrid harddrive in it easily. Now I wanted to install a fresh windows 7 on it. Is it possible?
And if not, how do I install a fresh windows 8 on it, without spending extra money on the OS? Windows 8 came with the laptop, but without a disk.
And what is your opinion? Should I use windows 8 or 7 on it? (I really hate the looks and feel of windows 8.. It's way more complicated and non-user-friendly than 7..)
I hope you can help me out
    Best regards
    Aleksander

The least problems would be installing Win8 a it came with it (your key is embedded in the bios by the way) but I'd also prefer Win7. According to MSI downgrading to 7 should work with the EC of the Win8 version. As drivers and utilities are available for this model and Win7 it should work: http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GE60-2OC.html#download
Be sure to install DotNetFX40Client and SCM as that is needed to make the machine work properly.

  • MSI GE60 2OC Windows 7 x64 USB 3.0 eXtensible Host

    Hi,
I have another problem with my MSI GE60.
I have installed Windows 7 x64, updated everything and installed driver.
At last I installed the USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller driver from the msi homepage. But now my usb ports aren't working anymore!
I tried different driver and deleted them in safe mode from windows.
    Help? ...
    Thanks in advance

I just posted a similar issue on the same machine, except my USB ports will only work under certain circumstances. It's very odd and it sounds like a driver issue... Did you ever get it sorted out?

For now I would sit tight on flashing the BIOS or the EC. There seems to be an issue with it right now and we are trying to work with MSI to get it sorted out.

  • Hard drive swapping issue GE60 2OC

So i bought this new MSI GE60 2OC laptop and the only rly negative point with it is its HDD, cause I'm used to SSD now.
Thus i decided to upgrade the laptop with my SSD from my old laptop which is an OCZ agility 3 240g. So i plug it in my laptop nothing goes wrong just like i have done it before.
Then i start the laptop and it goes straight into bios menu where you set boot option and such, fine i thought and checked if it was in ACHI mode,
so i saved and exited then after i saved and exited it rebooted and went to the same bios boot menu again. now i got nervous and check all the setting and they were correct and it keeps looping like this every time u exit it the menus.
tried several boot option and switch to legacy from UEFI then it booted but dunno if it is the correct way to do it .
So i swapped it back to UEFI to get it back for my HDD.(Legacy boot thing might be the correct way pls say if that works, cause haven't red into it that much yet).
Now i thought it was broken so i switched back to the HDD and it worked perfectly and i tried the same thing with my dads SSD an samsung SSD Basic 840-Series 250GB
but got the same loop and have searched forums and so on but i have no clue why it get stuck there, it's like the laptop don't find the SSD in bios only the HDD. Any ideas of how i should proceed would be awesome.

    Hello Odeen,
I assume you have the HDD plugged out/removed when you have your SSD inserted in the laptop? If you have plugged it in, try setting the boot order in the BIOS to HDD first!
If you have your HDD unplugged, you are not using an MSATA but just the Sata 3 for the SSD because you only have 1 SATA slot right? The SSD doesn't have the proper Windows files and/or proper boot files to boot to Windows, therefore it boots into the boot menu (I think) You should take an bootable USB/DVD (DVD is recommended) and put the bios into UEFI mode for a Windows 8 DVD or you should put it in LEGACY mode when installing Windows 7, for Windows 7 install it's a bit harder but I have a tutorial on that topic on this forum... Let's say that you're going to install Windows 8: go to the bios and turn off secure boot and fast boot and enable the boot mode in UEFI, boot the Windows 8 DVD in UEFI mode (when seeing the MSI logo press F11) and select the boot device in the Boot Menu, now your Windows 8 Installer should load the Windows files. Select your SSD (do not format it in Windows so if you haven't done a format yet go make a Parted Magic bootable USB/DVD and do a secure-erase on the SSD (tons of tutorials about that on the interwebz) Now install Windows 8 on your SSD and there you go, Windows 8 installed on your SSD in UEFI mode. Everything should work fine from then...
    Hope I helped you out!

  • MSI GE60 modified ec

Hi, I would like to request something similar to this author https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=175803.0
Modified ec firmware with lowest fan speed changed to value 28 instead of 30 (i changed value with RWEverything and it works, but its just temporary), so its more quiet when idle.
    WEC 0x72 0x28
    Other speeds are fine.

  • GE60 2OC won't boot after RAM upgrade...

    Hi forum
I just upgraded my laptop ge60 2oc 014ne, with two 8 GB corsair value select sticks.
Now my machine won't boot. I hit the button, the power light turns on, then the harddrive indicator lights for a while... And then it just stands there... Nothing shows on the screen..
    Any help? Please..
    Cheers

another thing is that you can't put in more RAM than the notebook came shipped with right?
If it originally had 8GB over 2 slots you can't put in more than 8GB in the entire notebook right? (I thought I read something about that somewhere....)
    Nope. Not true.
In most cases it's restricted by 1 of 3 things....either the CPU, the IMC (Integrated Memory Controller) or the BIOS.
MSI is pretty good about NOT restricting it via the BIOS in some way.
Usually it ends up being the IMC that restricts it, either via a maximum memory (say 32 GB) or via a maximum amount of memory per module (say 8GB).
Either way, the GE60 I believe should support up to 16GB of memory. I think it should come with 2 memory sockets. You need to ensure that they are 1.35V compatible given the fact that you have a Haswell system.
    http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GE60-2OC.html#specification
Confirms that it has 2 memory sockets, and supports up to 16 GB of memory, so 2 x 8GB sticks.

  • GE60 2OC Intel HD Graphics Drivers stop responding & Optimus

    Hey,
I got my GE60 today, I'm not sure from the model but I think it's 2OC. It's similar to this: notebook.de/msi-gaming-ge60-i750m281fd-intel-core-i7-4700mq-240ghz-dos-p-57394
It's FreeDOS, and I had some problems installing it, as Windows didn't want to install to the hard drive, but then I changed the booting mode to Legacy and the installation worked.
I installed all drivers (from CD) + Nvidia's own 750M driver + Intel's own graphics driver.
    Now it's doing this:
The image is somewhere from the internet, but it's basically the same (I have Win8 and it says Intel HD Graphics Drivers with me)
That happens like every 5-10 minutes, 2-3 times during writing this post. Can I fix this somehow?
Also, I would like to disable Optimus, as it sucks imo. I want to use the full potential from my notebook whenever I need and want to. Disabling it would probably also remove the problem as I wouldn't have to use the Intel graphics card then.
I hope that nothing is broken from the laptop, other than software ;p

Which drivers exactly? I have installed the drivers from the official CD, but of course, they might be outdated.
Should I remove something before installing?
Windows' own troubleshoot with the advice to edit the registry didn't work either.
e: I installed the MSI's driver for the Intel Graphics, but it didn't really help :/
e2: it stopped responsing after the installation, but while after that, it has worked perfectly. let's see where this is going..

I am not sure to understand: The 517 is newer than the 617 ?
(I downloaded both files, and inside the zip files, there are same dates !)

  • Unlocked BIOS for GE60 2OC with GPU Overclock if possible

    Hello,
Could you make a fully unlocked BIOS for my GE60-2OC?
The latest BIOS version I have is the 620 from 2014-11-28 from the official MSI product site and the EC FW is 1511 from 2014-06-11 also from the MSI product site. If possible I would also like all the overclock options enabled.
    Big thanks in advice

If there are any advanced options, not acessable through Afterburner, like the Powermizer Options, could you enable those? If not, you can just leave that, I'm just having some issues with GPU performance and I thought there may be some more advanced settings in the BIOS.
Anyways, thank you very much for it
Nope, system BIOS don't have options for discrete card, rather than option to disable it

  • Looking for an 802.11AC Wifi adapter for MSI GE60-0NC

I want to buy an 802.11AC Wifi module for my MSI GE60-0NC to replace the 802.11N adapter it ships with. It must be compatible with windows 8.1 (as the one it shipped with has serious issues unless I disable N and run it as a G adapter). Do not want to use an external USB adapter either. Is there a compatibility list somewhere or does anyone know of an adapter which will suit these requirements?

For my GE60-2OC i bought an Intel Centrino Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 + Bluetooth, it works perfectly.
this card need 2 antenas, (there is 2 antenas in the GE60), and just download the drivers and install Intel drivers.

  • GE60 2OC flashing bios problem

HI and a Happy New Year to everybody !
I am presently running the following:
    BIOS: E16GCIMS.510
    EC Version: 16GCEMS1  Ver 5.05
    Windows-8 (as delivered)
    Upgraded:
    2 X 128GB Plextor m5m SSD, running Raid-0
    16GB Ram
Everything is running very fast, however Windows-8 is "after me" to upgrade to Windows-8.1, so I decided to flash the bios fra 510 to 617 and followed EXACTELY the two flashing modes described on the download page: http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GE60-2OC.html#download
Before flashing using 1st methodology, I changed:
    SATA-mode to AHCI from RAID
    Fast Boot to DISABLED
    Boot mode select to LEGACY
and I received this message: EFI-SECURITY-VIOLATION! Rom image version is invalid
after which I tried to rechange to Load Setup Defaults, but received the same message also after using Default Setup but changed to AHCI from Raid
Then I tried the 2nd methodology, which gave me this message:
    4-error:
Rom file ROMID is not compatible with existing Bios ROMID.
I would be happy for any help, please?

I was just hoping that you would have the time to "straightening me out" of my  confusion!

  • Month Owned MSI GE60 Apache Pro Fan Issues

    Hi everyone,
I have had my MSI GE60 Apachce Pro 15" laptop for a little over a month now.
For the first month, I could barely hear the fans when leaving the laptop idle or using non-power hungry applications that do not involve gaming, such as browsing the web or watching videos. Now, however,  the fan seems to always be running at a medium intensity, even when idle. As soon as I boot up the laptop, the fan is much more noisy than it used to be and stays that way.
The program HWinfo64 shows my CPU temperature at usually 41 degrees Celsius. Moreover, turning on the Cooler Blaster feature does not decrease the advertised 5-10% temperatures either. In fact, it increases the heat to around 42-43 degrees Celsius.
My desk is usually completely dust free, so I do not think dust is the issue here. I will have to open up the back to be completely sure, but I do not want to void my warranty for something as silly as cleaning it out (There is a void sticker right above one of the necessary screws to remove the back casing. I will contact MSI to inquire about this because I read that MSI will allow owners to remove this sticker in certain locations without voiding the warranty).
Could there be any other reason besides dust that could make my fans this noisy? Does anyone have suggestions on improving it? Thank you.

Try to remove battery and hold power button for 5 sec.
I tried that a few times, but it did not work. The fan noise is becoming unbearable tbh. Considering selling it now :/

Not every seller can allow you to remove the bottom cover.

  • MSI GE60 2PL Cooling Question

    Hi there,
I just bought a MSI GE60 Apache-629 Laptop. I Never owned a MSI Laptop but I am Very Satisfied so Far. Even though it doesn't have the NVidia GTX 860m , like the Apache Pro, I can Still Run Battlefield 4 on Medium Spec in 1920x1080.
My Question is should I Press the Fan Button to Speed Up the Fan when Playing Battlefield 4 ?
It seemed like my Laptop was getting VERY HOT !
    Is this Normal ?

    Hello ericpatterson89,
If you don't mind the fan noise and the power consumption while you're playing BF4, just speed it up. The temperatures of the CPU & GPU are always hot when playing these types of 3D FPS games, no matter which model. Some models are just bigger and thicker so that you don't feel so much heat on the surface. But actually they are all very hot in those cores.
So the best and accurate way is to run "Dragon Gaming Center" to monitor the temperatures of the CPU & GPU. Its icon can be found on the system tray (right-bottom of the screen). Just double-click it to open its window and it will show you the temperatures of both CPU & GPU.
There's an EC firmware inside the laptop which will automatically increase/decrease the RPM of the fan or boost up/throttle down the GPU power consumption according to the heat generated. So if you always turn the fan in full speed during the game play, according to the principle of the NVIDIA GPU, it will run as fast as possible if needed until it's throttled by EC firmware. In my past experience, setting the fan in full-speed during the game play will get more time running fast and smooth than setting it automatic. That's why I am saying that it depends on the user's tolerance to the fan noise...
