MSI GE60: Downgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 7

Hi, this is unrelated to the previous topic so I'm creating a new one.
I want to install Windows 7 since 8 is causing me so many problems. I'm having trouble doing so. Let me explain.
I have an old Windows 7 DVD that I got "somewhere" which came with both 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows and I suspect that the installer is in 32 bits. When I try to boot up from that DVD it doesn't appear. If I want to make it appear I have to change from UEFI to Legacy but then I can't install the OS because I get this error in every partition (and formatting doesn't help): "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style". I've googled it and long story short I can't install it there because the DVD installer is in 32 bits and I need it in 64bits or something.
I have another DVD I got from Microsoft that lets me boot in UEFI after I disable secure boot (I get signature problems otherwise). When the files have been copied I get the "Starting Windows" message and it hangs up when the animation has not ended. Changing from AHCI to IDE in the HDD lets me see the full animation but it gets stuck at the end.
So with all this, how can I install Windows 7? What's going on? I think I have to use the second DVD and that problem is related to drivers from the HDD probably, but what should I do?

Yes. It can be done. You can have several OS in the same hard drive. So I have 2 partitions and I try to install Windows 7 in the second one which I delete first and then create & format but I get that error. And the error is because I'm not booting up the installer in UEFI mode (that installer doesn't support UEFI). SO I got a ISO from Microsoft with Windows 7 that supports UEFI and can boot up, however it gets stuck at "Starting Windows" message with the animation not finished.
You are correct, but incorrect. Windows 7 doesn't truly support GPT partitions. Yes, I know, I know, it says it does. Have you ever found someone that has successfully installed it to a GPT? Let me know, since I have not yet found one person that has. Everyone that does try always has some issue booting in the end.
Convert the partition to MBR and you should be able to install just fine, as sus has said.

  • MSI GE60 2OC Windows 7 x64 USB 3.0 eXtensible Host

    Hi,
I have another problem with my MSI GE60.
I have installed Windows 7 x64, updated everything and installed driver.
At last I installed the USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller driver from the msi homepage. But now my usb ports aren't working anymore!
I tried different driver and deleted them in safe mode from windows.
    Help? ...
    Thanks in advance

I just posted a similar issue on the same machine, except my USB ports will only work under certain circumstances. It's very odd and it sounds like a driver issue... Did you ever get it sorted out?

  • How Do I Downgrade From Windows Vista To XP On A 3000 N100 Series Notebook?

Hello. Here is the problem. I have Windows Vista Pre-loaded on my 3000 N100 Notebook, absolutely dislike this operating system and want to erase and load Windows XP. From reading other forum messages I have learned several things.
    1) The install disk On Windows XP Home & Professional will not recognize Sata Hard Drives, when it reaches the point of loading where it looks for the hard drive it "BOMBS OUT" with error messages.
    Several options are open .............
    1) Log into the BIOS, locate the SATA option, and change to compatibility mode.
    2) Have a USB external floppy connected with a Sata Driver on it and when installing Windows XP press the "F6" button when Windows asks for any external drivers you want to load.
Here is the problem with the 3000 N100 Notebook series..........
1)There is "NO SATA OPTION" in the BIOS of the 3000 N100 series notebooks to choose. In this model Lenovo stripped the BIOS down to the bare essentials.......and I Do Mean.... "BARE". The latest BIOS upgrade also has no Sata option. Why they did not offer at least this choice of downgrading to XP is beyond me. LENOVO..... I'm not impressed with your notebook.  As usual.... Microsoft has all vendors jumping to their tune..... Nothing but "VISTA" at this point in time. What if you hate it??????
    2) I have hunted all over the Lenovo Web Site for a "SATA DRIVER" that would work with a 3000 N100 Notebook, no such critter exists.  LENOVO..... Couldn't you have at least offered this????  I'M NOT IMPRESSED.
Has anyone been able to downgrade to Windows XP successfully on a 3000 N100 Series Notebook??? How Did You Do It?? Has Anyone Located A "SATA DRIVER" That Works???  IF So, Please Explain To Me Step-By-Step How I Can Get Rid of Vista and Load XP.
    Help........Help.......Help........Help......Help!!!!!!!!!!!
    Regards

Hello Himleung. Thank you for answering this message. Where did you find a "Sata Hard Drive Driver" that works?? Perhaps you could pass that along to this message forum in case someone else that has a 3000 N100 (may also work with the N200 series) Notebook wants to downgrade from Vista to Windows XP.
This is what baffles me to no end. The Lenovo web site has every driver you need to load Windows XP on the notebook.....**EXCEPT**..... the Sata HD Driver......**OR**...... the ability in BIOS to change to "compatability mode".  Duh!!!..... whats wrong with this story. I have never seen such a weak BIOS as the one in the 3000 N100. If I had known this I probably would have gone to another brand. They should have advertised this notebook as...... "Non-Geek Compatible".
Not knowing exactly how you could forward the driver to me I did the following....... I created a new Web email location that you could use to send the driver as an email attachment. The address is....... [email protected] This address will exist just long enough to obtain the driver..... and then......"Hasta-La-Vista" baby......end of story......as I do not want to be bombarded with ads, trash, or perhaps a virus of some sort..... although.....I'm SURE we have GREAT PEOPLE on this message center.
I'm not familiar with the "NLITE" program you mentioned. Again....perhaps you could mention where I can get it and what I need to do to set the program up to run the driver.
    Thanks again, Himleung.

Why 32 bit? I do not recommend that but here is a past thread dealing with your exact question:

The "downgrade" will not be free. You will have to buy Windows7 or have a real licensed copy available.

  • MSI GE60 0NC Problems After Upgrade

    Hi,
Recently downgraded my MSI GE60 0NC from Windows 8 to Windows 7. Had some issues with the wireless connectivity. I then flashed the laptop to Windows 7 EC controllers. It was then working after this. I then purchased a Samsung 840 Pro SSD 512GB and Corsair Vengeance 16GB. After installing the SSD I then proceeded to do a fresh install of Windows 7. After downloading the wireless drivers I am being told that the drivers may be out dated. I dont understand what the issue is as the did the exact same procedure as before.
Can anyone help me out please as the laptop is useless at the moment

Thanks for the reply, check the first thing i wrote, i explained it a bit, also check the screenshot. I think that could be the problem, but im not that good with laptops so im not sure.. "MSI suite" cant find my motherboard so the program wont execute..
edit: i've already tried the SCM that you linked, i get some errors with net framework so it wont execute after the setup..

  • MSI GE60 2OC-014NE - Install Windows 7 or 8 on new hard drive

    Hi forum
So I just bought the new MSI GE60. I installed my hybrid harddrive in it easily. Now I wanted to install a fresh windows 7 on it. Is it possible?
And if not, how do I install a fresh windows 8 on it, without spending extra money on the OS? Windows 8 came with the laptop, but without a disk.
And what is your opinion? Should I use windows 8 or 7 on it? (I really hate the looks and feel of windows 8.. It's way more complicated and non-user-friendly than 7..)
I hope you can help me out
    Best regards
    Aleksander

The least problems would be installing Win8 a it came with it (your key is embedded in the bios by the way) but I'd also prefer Win7. According to MSI downgrading to 7 should work with the EC of the Win8 version. As drivers and utilities are available for this model and Win7 it should work: http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GE60-2OC.html#download
Be sure to install DotNetFX40Client and SCM as that is needed to make the machine work properly.

  • MSI GE60 0NC-622UK and Windows 8.1 secondary HDD sleep bug

    Hi All!
I'm struggling with this problem for a long time now. (MSI GE60 0NC-622UK, OS: Windows 8.1, BIOS: 5.14)
There're similar topics on the net:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/58ae1ed5-c643-41ba-95ec-ffa5fbed16af/win-8-keeps-to-shut-down-my-hdds-why?forum=W8ITProPreRel
    http://www.eightforums.com/drivers-hardware/4710-secondary-hard-drive-goes-sleep.html
I bought an 256GB SSD in it, so the 750GB HDD is now the secondary one. And the problem is, no matter what I set in Advanced Power Options (never, 0, 600) the OS always puts the hdd into sleep after around 10 seconds (the original windows 8.0 also did the same). The problem is with this the I HAVE to wait couple of seconds when the hdd spins up next time! :(
    Only this one helped: http://lytondarque.com/2013/03/29/prevent-hd-sleep-in-windows-8/
It's a small utility called KeepAliveHD (I could only install the v1.4.1 version, but it's working fine.)
So I'm curious is there any other solution beside using an external utility.
    Thanks for helping!

    Power Consumption
The Western Digital Scorpio Blue 750GB actually does okay in power consumption compared to competitors. Its read/write and startup draw numbers are in line with competitors; its idle numbers and random read are noticeably lower. The observed differences are unlikely to make a noticeable impact on battery life. It is worthwhile to note that during our tests when running as a secondary drive the power management seemed overactive in that it would frequently initiate its sleep mode. When this happened the drive would park its head and spin down after only a few seconds.
I think the problem is inherent in the design of the drive. The only way around it is by using a program like you have mentioned, unfortunately.

  • Windows XP Pro SP2 cd-rom after downgrading from Vista

    Hi everybody.
I successfully downgraded my T61p from Vista to XP Pro SP2 using the downgrade cd-roms send by Lenovo.
Everything seems to work well. I downloaded all drivers. No problem.
But I recently installed a rather old software that I frequently used on my old A31p. This software (a Microsoft program !) has automatically modified some files from XP Pro without any autorization.
Once it was done, I was asked by the system to insert the original Windows XP Pro SP2 cd-rom to repair this modification.
Of course, the (Vista to XP) downgrade cd-rom set was not recognized by the Thinkpad as the original XP set.
    An original cd-rom which I finally don't have !
I tried with an original XP Pro SP2 cd-rom bought a few years ago for my A31p. Unsuccessful.
Where could I find the XP Pro SP2 cd-rom corresponding to the downgraded system ?
Thanks for your help and suggestions.
    Regards.

    Thinkpad A31p - T42p - T61p - TP Tablet

    James,
    thanks for your answer.
But I wrote on my first post "I tried with an original XP Pro SP2 cd-rom bought a few years ago for my A31p. Unsuccessful."
Thus, I don't see any difference between an original Microsoft Windows XP2 Pro SP2 version cd-rom and one created by burning a downloaded version of the OS. An original was not recognized, what would a copy do ?
If possible, it might be probably better to create an XP Pro SP2 cd-rom from the "Rescue and Recovery" files which were reinstalled when downgrading from Vista to XP. (I hate the word "downgrade" : while I was doing it, I had the feeling I was upgrading my Thinkpad !)
I have been using for several years (and still use) an A31p (Since 2002, 8 to 10 hours a day) and a T42p. IMHO, the T61p is the same category of "great" notebooks. Thinkpads are really the best notebooks I have ever used. I noted no significant difference between IBM and Lenovo Thinkpads.

  • Downgrade from Windows 8.1 enterprise to windows 7 Ultimate or Professional

I have installed windows 8.1 and am not happy neither with its performance or it's UI; I have my own copy of Windows 7 Ultimate can I downgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 7 Ultimate? I need to keep my applications and files.

    Hi,
Like Carey said, you need to format the whole drive and do a clean install. The most important is don't forget do a backup in an external hard drive. You will be need to restore it after roll back to Windows 7.

Maybe some links to where I can find drivers to help me? Windows update cannot find and automatically install replacement drivers.

    Hi:
Looking at the hardware specs for your model you should be able to use all of the W7 x64 drivers and software from the HP Probook 450 G2 on your model except the BIOS and firmware files.
Your model uses the Intel HD graphics driver and the Realtek RTL8188EE wireless card driver.
