MSI GE70 fan revs up and back down

Hello everyone,
Here is my model of laptop.
MSI GE Series GE70 Apache Pro-012
I bought the laptop recently and notice that whenever I open a program, the fan spins up, and back down to normal levels. There is no heat problems with the laptop or anything. The issue occurs in the most basic functions, such as opening Chrome, FireFox, Internet explorer. It happens even when webpages are loading. As soon as the page is done loading, the fan goes back to normal. Then I load a new webpage and the fan does it again. Every time. This is very annoying because it makes me wonder if there is an issue. I have a CPU meter and when background processes are randomly causing a tiny spike (which is normal) during idle, the fan revs up and back down. Sometimes this is very annoying when trying to sleep. Is it normal to constantly rev up and down for each process even a very basic non-demanding process?
Anyone have any questions for more details, feel free to post and I'll answer as best as possible.

I notice that it was 49c idle. When i load a new webpage in google chrome, it spikes to 60c and back to about 52c after 2 or 3 seconds and the fan revs up. I had a few other gaming laptops (ASUS) and it never did this. Was wondering if normal for MSI?

  • Can I produce a frequency sweep a PXI-5652 from 1GHz to 2GHz and back down to 1GHz at a rate of 1KHz with RT?

I need to produce a triangular frequency sweep over a range of at least 1GHz.  This sweep will start at 1GHz go up to 2GHz and back down to 1GHz and repeat the cycle.  I need this cycle to repeat at a rate of 1KHz.  The sweep must be as smooth as possible with the frequency steps being no more than say 1MHz.  I have a RT controller chassis that I can install the PXI-5652 into.  If I dedicate one of the processor cores to this function and reserve the second core for my data acquisition and processing do I have and chance or am I just dreaming?
    Thanks,
    Bruce Barnes

    Hi Bruce,
If I interpret this correctly that you need to go from 1 GHz to 2 GHz and back to 1 GHz in 1 ms (you want to repeat this at a rate of 1 kHz) then this isn't possible with the PXI-565x series of RF Signal Generators. These have a tuning time of around 1-5 ms for one frequency step, and tuning from 1 G to 2 G in steps no greater than 1 MHz would mean at least 1000 steps.

  • MSI GE70 2OE minor freezes and scratchy sounds

    Hi Guys,
Recently I have become a happy owner of the notebook MSI GE70 SOE. However I found few problems which really destroy the pleasure of playing games on it.
    1) First of all I noticed that whenever the computer is going on high performance, balanced or even Eco power option there're problems with the USB and headphone ports. The computer starts to do little freeze for 1-2 seconds and also there is a scratchy sound both from headphone and notebook speakers.  I am using the USB wireless mouse and it often freezes during that time. The same problem occurs during game especially Battliefield 3. The notebook works quite Ok when it is on the Office power option but occasionally those problems occur on this option.
I'd like to inform that I did all the drivers and windows 8 updates from the MSI website. I'm thinking that it probably can be a problem with the power supply but I'm not an expert on that.
I would be very grateful for any help from you guys.

What I would probably do first is check the temperatures, just to be sure.
Use CoreTemp and MSI Afterburner and report the IDLE temperatures and the temperatures while playing a game. This would be most helpful.
While it seems strange that it happens only with the AC plugged in, it might also have something to do with the computer overheating, and once you unplug it, it will throttle back quite a bit and cool down and catch up to itself. At least, that's my best guess at this point.

  • MSI GE70 fan problem

    Hi all,
could you please help me with most intriguing problem that I’m having with my fan? A couple of hours ago my fan was being noisy (I’m guessing it was hitting its cover), so i cleaned him with compressed air, but when I put it in it stopped working.
So i turned my laptop on, fan doesn’t work, so I unscrew him again and if it stays a couple of cm away from cover it’s work just fine but soon after it touches cover (radiator, any metal part) it stopped working.
Anyone can please explain this to me? How can I fix it?
Or how can I replace the fan? What model is it?

I would contact MSI directly about this.

  • HELP! Fans speeding up and slow down

    What is happening?
The fans on my Power Mac G5 are sppeding up for short periods of time and then they go back to low speed but it's happening almost every minute or so.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you in advance.
Ah! and I apologize for my english.

Check for dust buildup on the CPU cooling fins and fans. You can use a can of compressed air (the ones for electronics work well) to get some of the dust off. Just be careful to keep the cans upright, or else liquid can come out of them.
Otherwise, try setting the Processor Performance setting to 'Highest' in the Energy Saver preference pane. This will cause the fans to run at a higher speed, but their speed won't fluctuate as much.

  • Fan Runs strangely and Warcraft 3 and expansion run strangely...

I have been experiencing my MacBooks fan rev up and down and sometimes completely stop for maybe 5 seconds then just rev up again and slow down then get really loud then slow down etc. Is there any way to see how fast my fan is running? And if I need a new fan?
The Warcraft problem is when I am playing the game it will lag and then the sound will repeat multiple time and my cursor will "float". It makes my entire computer stop for a second then act funny for a second then go back to normal. My itunes music will repeat multiple times (like a record skips) also. Sometimes in the worst case the music will completely become just distorted but when i plug my headphones in and out it repairs it. Sometimes when this problem happens there will be a long tone coming from the speakers when this problem occurs I restart my computer.
Can anyone help this?? I know its very strange and quite annoying! So plleaassee help!

I updated to Lion 10.7.3 and started noticing my fans running on high all the time and my battery would drain 2-3x faster.  I was going to take my computer into an Apple store until I found this thread.  I did the SMC reset by shutting down my computer, plugging it in, and then pushing down shift+control+option while also pushing down the power button.  Nothing happens on the screen and the computer did not turn on.  I then released all the buttons at once after holding them down for 10 seconds.
After that, I simply turned my computer back on and everything seems to be working fine.  The  fans are not blasting anymore.  I have a newer MacBook Pro where I can't access my batteries.  The SMC reset may differ for other types of laptops.

  • LX835 fan cycles on and off (and on and off and...) at idle since 6.20 BIOS

    Hi,
    I have a new-ish LX835-D3215 AIO.
The fan started to cycle on and of constantly about every 30-50 seconds (off) and 10-20 second (on) when the computer is at idle. The CPU temp is about 30% and constant and the fan runs up to 75% of max speed; both according to the PC Health monitor. It does this even when the PC is supposedly sleeping. The computer did not do this OOB, but I believe it started after the 6.20 BIOS upgrade. I have recently upgraded to Win 8 but that has not helped (nor worsened) the problem. The fan winding-up and winding down noise is really infuriating! It is much more intrusive than when the fan runs constantly during normal operation, which is at about 75% and CPU at 42% temperature.
I am disabled and I bought this computer to place by my bedside, and it has become a big disappointment. I have to power down/up or manually hibernate it. (I recently added hibernate for this purpose). I have noted a few other posts of similar fan cycling issues in the forum.
Many thanks for any help. Anyone - please!

I figured it out. Here is what you do; Shut down your mac, then unplug the power cord. Turn your Mac back on and close the lid immediately. That solved my problem.

    Hello astrobilia,
Let's start by checking your BIOS settings since you have already inspected the CPU Fan.
This HP troubleshooting article should help us
    Error: CPU Fan Failed
If you are unsure about the CPU Fan settings or you don't see the settings. Navigate through the menus and reset the settings to default.
After resetting the BIOS try booting the computer and monitor the results.
That is the easy fix before we start looking at having to replace parts.

  • MSI GE70 2OE static electricity problems!

Hi, i bought an MSI GE70 2OE gaming laptop and right away i noticed some static electricity where i put my hands on the pc case. Anyone else having problems like these, and is it dangerous? I mean even right now when i type this article i have my hands resting on the pc and i can feel some static electricity. Yesterday i even had a small discharge when i touched the corner of my pc... since the pc is metallic or aluminium or whatever, i guess it builds up charge. First i thought it was my power outlet, so i changed them and still static electricity...then i thought all sockets in my apartment were screwed up so i went to a friend across town, plugged it in...and still static electricity problems.... I mean i just bought the pc 2 weeks ago and i don't want it fried or destroyed because of this...is this dangerous?  Whenever i unplug the pc and run it on battery, everything is 100% fine and i feel no static electricity at all... and as soon as i plug it in, i feel it again when i touch my pc.

Just a note. I bet it was the first time you saw notebook exploded from wi-fi antenna from inside.
I guess what if there is a connection? Who knows. That laptop's case is from plastic but who knows.
OP, ask someone else to touch laptop. Not on the carpet) maybe it is just you.
Actually, on the GT laptops it's metal....the handrest is actually metal.
But yeah. indranil's suggestion makes more sense.

  • MSI GE70 Keyboard Issue - cursor jumps erratically

I've had the MSI GE70 for several months and one of the most vexing things about it, aside from Windows 8, is that when typing often the cursor will jump to some totally unexpected spot and ruin my typed message. I called tech support and they told me to adjust the sensitivity of the mouse pad.....no help at all.  Someone told me perhaps the case wasn't  properly sealed and there was vibration inside causing the keys to malfunction.  I like the touch of the keyboard but there are moments when this is beyond frustrating.
    Suggestion?

The best thing I can do is to tell you to adjust the 'palm check' on the touchpad drivers. It might even have the ability to disable the touchpad if typing is occuring. I'm not sure, it really depends on the driver for the touchpad and I don't have a GE70 so I can't elaborate more.

  • Help MSI GE60 Fan keeps spinning to 100% and down every 10 seconds.

    Hello,
I just bought an MSI GE60 and after 4 days of using, The fan keeps spinning up and down every 10 seconds even when nothing is running on the laptop. Have tried updating the BIOS and the drivers, but no change.
Every time i turn on my laptop this always happen. It goes on when my laptop is on. Even if im not doing anything it still keeps spinning up and down. I checked the temperature and its at 40+ C and my CPU usage is normal. Basically im not doing anything and it keeps doing this fan spin up and down.
Even when the cooler boost is on or off, its still does the same thing, the fan keeps spinning up to 100% and down.
Do you think this is a software issue or hardware?  It is very annoying to hear the fan go 100% for 10 seconds then back to normal then back to 100% speed again and when i press cooler boost it doesnt do anything. So even tho the cooler boost button is off, it still keeps doing the 100% fan speed and back to normal again. It keeps repeating.
Can anyone help me solve this problem please? Thank you very much.

I have already tried uninstalling the S-bar and SCM drivers but still getting the fan noise. Also tried the no-battery and no-power reset for more than 24 hours but still having the same problems. The only thing that worked was changing the values in the RWeverything software. The only problem here is that it will work only until I shutdown the laptop. Once I do a cold boot I have to redo the RWeverything changes again.
    @reprieve.nagrand
thanks for your case. Can I ask you a few questions more, please?
    1. According to your model id your notebook came with just FreeDos, right? Could you please enter the Bios and go to System Information to confirm that you are using Bios 10F and EC version 14.04 (or 4.04)?
    2. I urgently need a screenshot of your EC-Page within RWeverything after a cold boot without any modifications. Please try to make the screenshot at that time, when you can barely hear the fan anymore during the spin-on / spin-off cycle.
    3. CoolerBoost: with a laptop that has been sitting idle for at least 20mins since last cold boot (no load, please!), can you turn on coolerboost by pushing the button somewhere to the left of the Powerbutton and let coolerboost run for at least 30 seconds. Then turn coolerboost off again and wait for the fan to slow down. Does the fan run continously after applying coolerboost or does it enter its off/on-cycle again. Please try it for at least 5 times and repeat it during other Windows sessions for two times. If this trick works, you are the man to make the video! Please help me out here. Please note, that the coolerboost trick will only work until there is load on the system again. If the fan speed picks up again due to load and slows down again, it will enter the annoying pattern, again.
    4. While still reviewing the case and going through my notes, I came across an entry that I reflashed the EC-Controller with the same firmware one or two nights before the problem disappeared. This happened after uninstalling S-Bar and SCM earlier. So, if you are familiar with DOS-Flashing using USB-Sticks you could try to reflash the EC-Controller, than remove all power sources for at least 20 mins. If anyone else is experiencing the problem, please go ahead and report your findings. But please do the reflash only if you are familiar with such things and of course, please do so on your own risk!
Current status and work in progress:
As I haven't gotten hand on a video proofing that simply pushing the coolerboost fan button makes the problem temporarily go away, I am still stuck on there. The coolerboost solution works until the system load increases so much, that the fan level has to be raised. When the system load goes back to idle again, the fan level decreases and enters the off/on-cycle again.
The good news is I managed to customize a programm called fan control tools to somehow automatically apply the changes in RWeverything via a small GUI. This tool will also allow you to set fan profiles for Office, Games, etc. The bad news is, that this will trigger UserAccountControll at least once and it doesn't reapply after a cold boot or returning from hibernate, yet. I am now currently working on a solution that allows the new fan values to be set by Windows automatically using a batch file. This will apply the new values after a normal Windows boot, but not when returning from hibernate, though.
However, if you have found your remedy value for the fan issue within RWeverything, you can turn to Svet in the subforum "Notebook Modified & Private BIOS'ses & EC-FW". He will certainly be able to create you a custom EC-FW with those values written permanently in it.
    My case:
The fan problem with my notebook has not (yet) returned. It has been running without S-Bar/SCM just fine. It can even process all fan profile alterations I have made. So, am I just lucky? While I do believe, that the fans of those notebooks experiencing the issue could be "somewhat odd", I find it hard to believe that my fan really suffered a mechanical problem. Without doing anything mechanical wise, my problem went away.
@Warner: I promised to present more videoproof of the case, but unfortunately I haven't managed to get a hold on a suitable video, especially since my unit has been running fine for the last weeks. Please be patient, if I have enough evidence I will post it asap.
One question bothers me though: looking at the EC-page of RWeverything, I was wondering if these are really all values, that the EC handles and checks. Are there any other values, variables that the EC manages and that are not displayed on the EC-page of RWeverything? The reason for asking this, is because I have a video showing the ECpage of RWeverything while the fan does his off/on-cycle and you can clearly see the RPMvalue correspond to the actions of the fan. As you pointed out, the boosts occur because the EC is missing a fan signal, I could clearly see the RPM value at offset 0xCD respond to the actions of the EC. If the controller looks for that value only, it should surely see the RPMs of the fan, as I can see them in RWeverything. So, I was wondering if the EC has other values not shown in RWeverything, that determine if the EC should enter the boost cycle?
While having another look at that video again, to me it appears as if the EC does this really on purpose. It tries to reduce the voltage of the fan to a point so low, that the fan simply starves. Then it boosts the fan up again. The only question is: why does the EC do that? Is there a leftover setting inside the EC - perhaps from another notebook - where such low RPMs were achievable?
You can find the video here in this zip-file: http://www.file-upload.net/download-7371226/MSI.rar.html
In the zip-file you will find three numbered videos, the first one is the most interesting as it shows the annoying fan cycle while the laptop is running idle. In the second one, the user put load on the system using prime95. The third one shows the system while it cools off again after prime95 has been stopped. Sadly, the video is too short as the system doesn't reach its lowest fan state again. The videos were taken in march in Germany, so the ambient temperature is around 20-21 °C or less (normal room temperature in Germany).
