MSI GS70 Throttling on Battery

Hello all,
I just got my MSI GS70 and when playing games, if I unplug the AC cord the framerate plummets due to throttling. I checked my temps and they are fine. I changed my power settings to High Performance but it still is throttling on battery power. Any suggestions? Thanks!

These are notebooks, desktop replacements. They're not meant to be used as mobile desktop replacements. Without AC power, it will default to either a much reduced clockspeed on the GPU, or switch to the integrated GPU instead.
Why? Well, the dedicated GPU is made to draw around 90W's (most likely, in the high end cases), and you only have most likely a 93 Watt-hour battery. Add in the power draw of the CPU, RAM, etc... and you might be looking at 180W power draw while you're playing a game. The battery would last MAYBE 30 minutes of game time, and over time the battery would deteriorate much more quickly due to the rapid discharging which it is not made to handle.
All the newer notebooks act this way, as it is more to preserve the system and the battery, as well as battery life, rather than give you a car with a jet engine on a drag strip to see how fast you can go. It just isn't meant to be used that way.

  • MSI GS70 Temperature and battery problem?

    Hello All,
I just bought my GS70 on 2/9/2014 and I have been noticing some serious fan noises from time to time. I eventually got curious and installed Core Temp. All cores average around 126F (54c). Are these numbers too high? Should I be concerned? What are my options?
I also discovered a problem with my battery yesterday. After shutting down yesterday, I disconnected the power from the computer. This morning I tried to turn the computer on but it was unresponsive. I attempted several times all with the same results. I then saw that my power was disconnected and plugged it back in and it turned on fine. However, Windows display that my battery is at 100 percent.
I grew suspicious that it was an isolated event. To test, I against shut down the computer first, then after it was shut down I disconnected the Power plug on the unit. After couple hours I again try to turn it on and was unable to. I then reconnected the power plug and was able to turn on. Against Windows had my battery at 100 percent. I was wondering if anyone else had this situation.
Any help or advices regrading my questions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

    Hello,
About the CPU temp is normal
About battery can you boot on the battery immediately after you turn it off with ac charger disconnected?
    [Without hours of waiting]
    Do EC reset: https://forum-en.msi.com/faq/article/how-to-reset-the-ec-embedded-controller
    then see how its goes.
Also tell your current BIOS and EC versions, look for them in BIOS Setup, system information.

  • MSI GS70 : Battery Light Indicator Blinking Amber

Hey everyone,  my MSI GS70's battery status light started blinking amber a few days ago. It blinks amber whenever the battery is fully charged with or without the adapter plugged-in. The battery is still working, and the blinking amber light goes away when the battery level drops from 100%.
When the battery level is at 99%, and I plug in the adapter, it starts charging the battery. I remember the battery doesn't get charged when it's at this level.
FYI I hardly use my laptop on battery, always using with the adapter plugged-in, so I'm very confused!!
    Thanks.

  • MSI GS70 Stealth Pro 2PE - Burning issue!

Dear MSI forum users, I am here to ask your opinion on my experience with this laptop, for the most part it is a good machine, but I have experienced a few issues...
First off I noticed that the Space bar only worked on the left side of the bar or the middle, pressing from the right never worked and you had to push down hard to get the left side to respond, I thought maybe it's just a defective key, but upon googling I saw that other users were reporting this, I also noticed the trackpad is abysmal and trying to use it for left and right click is useless, luckily you can disable it and use the mouse supplied with the laptop.
Anyway, when I noticed the space bar issue I thought it such an issue that I should RMA the laptop, to see if the bar could be fixed, however the exchange I had with the technical support guy at OCUK (where I bought the laptop from and have been a loyal customer for years) simply said the following "no one else has contact us about a faulty spacebar. It may just be that is how they are designed and a replacement will not fix the issue. Laptop keyboards are not generally the best as they have to be compact and slim to not avoid conflict with other components."
well that to me didn't seem right, having spend £1450 on a laptop you expect the components to be in working order, I had previously purchased 3 x MSI GX740 from them and all of them still work currently, none of them ever having space bar or track pad issues, nevertheless I had to continue with this laptop since they would not repair it.
The laptop has been running OK over the past year, but I have noticed two more very strange occurrences in the operation of it now.
First off, there's a video of the sound it is making, its like there's a fan in there trying to spin up, but falling back down at the last hurdle. THIS HAPPENS CONSTANTLY, from boot to shut down, it doesn't ever stop doing it.
Please search for my channel Daniel Sharpe on you tube as the forum won't let me post external links :S the video is titled MSI GS70 2PE Fan Failure?
now heres something that really concerns me, for my health mainly, the laptop is running so hot it is leaving burn marks on my legs through trousers, I have got a cooling pad now, but even still I NEVER had any issues with heat dissipation on the MSI GX740 models, no cooler needed it sits on my lap fine and does not burn me, but this one does?!
here are some pictures, the left leg is worse, it fades slightly overnight but yesterday it was purple, I spoke to a doctor who said he has never seen anything like it in his life, it looked like chilblains to him but obviously with the opposite cause, his advice was that prolonged use could cause long term damage, but even if I use it for an hour it burns me.
however, here are speed fan temps for idle (with a cooling pad now in place)
and here are  speed fan temps for load
and to top it all off the space bar has now come unclipped from the board and won't go back on properly.
So there we have it, there's a few issues with the laptop, I am mainly worried about the heat and the strange sound coming from one of the fans? (I Think)
please let me know what you think I can do, whether MSI would carry out repairs or something, as a laptop, this clearly isn't fit for purpose, as it can't sit on your lap without burning it!

GS series are slim & light models, so their temperature must be high and gathered on the surfaces of the bodies. If you're running demanding apps/games, it's uncomfortable and not recommended to put it on the top of your lap (although it's called a laptop). Some laptops won't have this problem that's just because they are not performance/gaming laptops at all or for office use. Some of the laptops are thick and the temperature was decreased and dissipated by the air flow when the heat propagated to the surface.
The screenshots of the temperature you provided are normal for GS70 2PE. The CPU/GPU temperature did go to such a high temperature (actually their top temperatures are between 100 to 105 before throttling themselves). The surface of the bottm of the laptop may be just several millimeters below the CPU/GPU and thermal pipes, so it's definitely very hot when running CPU/GPU intensive apps/games. If putting on your lap for a long time, it definitely causes the low-temperature burn, like the hazard when attaching some warm bags on your skins for a long time.
Regarding the fan noise & touch problem, I would suggest you insist to ask the service point to inspect, repair or maybe replace them. Fan noise may be due to the quality of the fan after a long period of working, but for keyboard they should have other keyboard parts on which the space problem won't exist. I think this is just a flawed keyboard.
I have a Apple Mac Air in my home and it's very cool, but it can't even run SimCity very well. For GS70 2PE, it's just a piece of cake.
I understand what you are saying in regards to the games and temperature, but it looks more like a design issue to me, the MSI GX740 that I have had for 5 years never burned me and did run most of the latest games at decent settings.
I have dealt with this issue by buying a cooling pad, so I'm satisfied on that front.
I did send a support request to MSI about this computer for the fan, touch pad and keyboard issues, but have received no reply as of yet, is this something I should resend? as I have never contacted them directly for repairs before I am not sure of the process!

Quotes: "The GS70 we test today has been introduced to the market for a while, that is why its a bit heavy for this machine to run the latest games. Even though the screen fluency is not perfect, it turns out to be quite enjoyable to play on this thin and 17" screen laptop, only the temperature is a bit high. The battery life is not great, but for a laptop as thin as GS70, we don't expect more. Moreover, this model is a bit old and you know how time will affect this factor."

    Hi Eduard
    1. when system is under heavy loading, the CPU temperature could reach almost 9x degree, don't worry, it is normal condition and under Intel CPU specification, once it is over the temp upper limit of CPU, the CPU will turn into throttling automatically
    2. the NVidia OPTIMUS is an automatically function that there is no way to switch on/off
    3. fan noisy when idle mode, normally it should be very quiet because it is dual fans design, if this noisy still bug you, you may find a nearest service center to check this acoustic level for you

  • MSI GS70 Locking the F3 Features

Laptop: MSI GS70 Stealth Windows 8.1
I can't remember what its called when you press F3 when you boot up the laptop.
So I am going off to college and would like to be able to password everything, so far I have my normal login and the BIOS locked, but as far as I can tell someone could potentially wipe my hard drive by just pressing F3 when booting up.
Is there any way to place a password on that so no one can access it?

Apart from setting passwords did you actually made it to ask in any boot? A bit strange for me as this shouldn't happen. In my case after setting up password, no matter what you wanted to do, it would always ask before letting anyone in (made my step father drive mad as he couldn't check what I do on my NB  )
Speak to MSI about this, and if they don't help you with this with simple solution, make a request for custom BIOS in NB section and tell what you need to be disabled or locked. Just make sure you will be able to use the recovery IF needed.

  • MSI GS70 2QE - Screen Askew

    Hi,
I bought an MSI GS70 2QE last week. I've noticed the screen is ever so slightly askew, its minor but its offputtng given the price of the laptop. I'm currently in talks with the place I bought it from who are saying they cant see the issue and have contacted MSI who also dont see the issue.
Can any MSI board members comment on the following images.
You'll notice if you zoom in on the left and right lower hand sides of the screen where it sits neatly next to the laptop body there is more of the black bezel showing on the right hand side.

They are saying not. They are happy to take the laptop back and look at it but if they don't see the issue they will return it to me. I've given them the exact photo. Everyone at work can see it etc, but I'm concerned they will see the issue and consider this within manufacturers tolerances. This will mean the laptop will have done a round trip to their office, been inspected and returned, something I don't fancy on a laptop costing over £1600.
I've asked if they will allow m to pay a restocking fee but they don't seem to want to do this either.
The issue is definitely there but I think its a case of whether I'm being too fussy or not. I don't believe I am.

Hello, I bought new MSI GS70 Stealth Pro without windows.
I Installed Windows 8.1 (Original ), than I downloaded drivers from MSI website, and GeForce Experience from Nvidia site, It installed automatically driver 340.52. It strange that on msi site recommended driver is "332.38".
And I have one problem, when I play, use laptop, it doesn't use Nvidia Graphic Card as recommended.
When I go to Nvidia Control Panel, Global Settings> And I change to use automatically Nvidia Card, instead of Intel Integrated> than I click Apply, Control Panel get stuck for 2 sec, Not respondig for 1 sec, and return. Now it shows Nvidia Card as recommended, and when I close Nvidia Control Panel, and Open it again, it shows Intel Integrated as recommend, So why it Doesn't remember the settings. Anybody knows the issue? It's annoying in gaming laptop with GTX870 I can't use it.

  • Where to buy the MSI GS70 2OD-002US in Europe ?

    Hi,
I live in Portugal (Europe), and very excited to purchase this laptop, but... with some dificulties trying to get answers to some questions.
1st the 5 physical local stores listed in MSI website after I click "Where to Buy", all replied to my emails saying MSI doesn't sell laptop anymore in Portugal.
2nd I discovered amazon.com is selling it but not amazon.co.uk.. I emailed amazon.co.uk asking if they were thinking selling it, they forward my questions to amazon.com which basically said "we dont control how much you will pay in Customs".
Some 10 companies in UK replied to me saying they only ship to UK mainland.
Till now, started getting a bit frustated in how can be such an awesome machine in a global internet connected world be so hard to get answers and best way to purchase it without needing to pay a flight to UK or some other country to buy it..
So here it is my original list of questions I mailed trying to understand the purchase process:
    1) I live in Europe(Portugal) and would like to buy the following laptop:
    *MSI GS70 2OD-002US*
    2) Does it exists with Portuguese Keyboard ?
    3) When is it available to be purchased in Europe ?
    4) Where can I buy it online so that it can be sent to Portugal ? And will it be possible online to choose options on the
    configuration ? I heard about 2 configs: 2x SSD of 128GB and a 2nd config using 2x SSD's of 256GB ?
    5) Where can I buy it offline in a physical shop in Ireland ? (Since seems MSI doesn't sell laptop anymore in Portugal, I got some family living in Ireland so could be a good family visit + laptop purchase trip)
    6) How does work the support in Europe ? In case of malfunction/problem will I have to mail Laptop to the country where MSI have its support center for Europe ?
    7) What is the "dead pixel" policy on this laptop ? In case I buy this laptop online and it arrives with "dead pixel" will I be able to return it for replacement ? If no, then it will be better to buy it in a physical store where I can check for "dead pixels" before purchase ?
    Thanks in advance ~
Greetings everyone on this form which was kindly refered to me from MSI reply to my email, and look forward to learn some new informations and understand where to purchase, how to choose config, the Portuguese keyboard and so on.
    Cheers,
    Zen

    Dear Sir,

May I know how you reset BIOS?  And your BIOS version is?
From your picture, it looks like audio driver conflicts, because there are many audio devices in the device managers.
There is a special reset hole, on the right side. BIOS Version E1773IMS.10D
It's not audio driver conflicts, the system is clean, only drivers from official MSI page.
This is bios side problem,OS reinstallation does not help, only bios reset or flash unlocked bios to be able to enable audio device again.

  • Notebook MSI GS70 2QE Speaker balance problem

I bought a MSI GS70 2QE Stelth Pro Notebook with the 970M video, I would like to know if somebody has the same sound problem with the sound of the build-in speakers.
My problem is that the sound is not properly balanced centrally, it leans to the right side of the computer. And also for example if you adjust the balance slider all the way to the left speaker the sound is still projected to the right side of the monitor/computer and when you move it to the right side the sound is projected correctly to the right.
    Thank you

I think that's because the woofer is close to the right side, actually the left and right speaker sound is even, but when playing particular audio frequency, the extra woofer effect works and would make you misunderstand the right sound is bigger.
