MSI GT60 0NE Reformat from Windows 8.1

So I recently updated my GT60 0NE's Windows 8 to 8.1, but now I'm deciding to just completely reformat my computer back to OEM factory settings.
I have read that there are some issues regarding the function of the F3 recovery partition (I haven't personally tried it yet.)  I've also read that another option is to use the built-in refresh/reset function in Windows 8 instead if the recovery partition doesn't work.
My questions are:
1. Which one should I use?  Assuming I can access the OEM factory settings recovery partition, should I use that or the built-in Windows 8 reset function?
2. If I use the built-in Windows 8 reset function, will it reinstall Windows without any of my laptop drivers and/or delete the recovery partition?
3. If I reformat my laptop using either method, will it not recognize the RAID 0 setup of my C drive?  That and built-in drivers are the main reason I want to stick with the OEM recovery partition.  Although hunting for the drivers will be easy, I have no clue how to set up RAID 0 (it came as default when I bought my laptop.)
3. I have 2 recovery partitions: BIOS_RVY and winRE_tools.  What are they for?  If possible, I'd like to keep the option of having the OEM recovery partition for future reformats for the drivers (unless it's not needed with the new Windows 8 reset function), but these recovery partitions are installed in different drives (one is on my C drive and the other is on my D drive.)
4. I am currently using the BETA EC firmware that prevents throttling.  Will reformatting my laptop cause it to revert back to the original EC firmware?  (I assume it won't since it's a firmware update.)
I hope someone can answer my questions.  Thanks in advance!

1. I would use the OEM Factory Recovery partition (using F3 during boot). This will reset you back to your original settings as if you just bought the notebook.
2. It will essentially make the laptop as if you just brought it home from purchasing it. Your recovery partition will remain intact.
3. It will recognize the RAID 0 most likely (Windows should have the required Intel raid drivers built in to recognize it). But you will have to find all the drivers and install them on your own. You won't need to worry about the RAID drivers that much honestly.
4. BIOS_RVY is for recovering via the F3 option mentioned above. I'm not sure what the winRE_tools are for.
5. Reformatting the hard drive will not effect the EC firmware. It is seperate.
Thanks for the answers darkhawk.  Two last questions:
1. What exactly is the difference between using the OEM Factory Recovery partition through F3, and using the built-in windows 8.1 reset function?  Don't they both restore to factory settings?  I was thinking the difference was that OEM = restore to how you got your laptop originally, and Win 8.1 reset = clean install w/o any drivers or programs aside from basic windows OS.
2. After I upgraded to Windows 8.1 my screen "blinks" after I input my password and press enter to login.  It's not a black screen of death or anything, it literally just blinks once and proceeds as normal.  Is that something I should be worried about?  I have not been able to find anything online about it (most search results talk about black screen problems or flickering problems, while mine is literally just an ADD annoyance.)  This only started happening after I upgraded from 8 to 8.1

  • MSI GT60 0NE-404US mSata/SSD/HD?

Hi I've recently purchased a MSI GT60 0NE-404US from ncix.com. The computer itself came with a standard 5400rpm HD. I'm looking at upgrading it with a SSD and now here are some questions:
Does the computer have 2 2.5" HD bays?
Does it have a mSata port so I can simply buy a mSata SSD?
Can I use the SuperRaid function as advertised?
Because I've reading the forums and online but none of them have the correct information regarding the my exact model. I just want to make sure which SSD is supported so I can make the correct purchase.
    Much appreciated!

The only way to find out what you can use it to open the bottom of the laptop up and see what is there.
If you see a 'card' where the hard drive should be, then you have a SuperRaid card. If you don't have a card there, then you probably have another normal SATA port for a 2.5" HDD.
That's the only way to truly know, as the resellers (such as NCIX) can change and customize it for you and who knows what it really is.

  • MSI GT60 0NE-404US all games crash after 10 minutes of play?

Hi I've just recently purchased a MSI GT60 0NE-404US with gtx680m 4g video card, i7 3630m CPU and 12g of ram. I took it home and ran a few games on it, all of them after basically 10 minutes the game will crash and something along the lines of "the graphic driver has crashed and restarted". I've tried updating my video driver to the latest and rerolled to older drivers, none of that worked. I've used hardware monitor and tried to see the GPU temperature, they seem to be running at 50-60 degrees celsius if I turn the turbo fan on. I've tried running some benchmarking software to test out the stability of the 3d graphics but the same problem occurs. it looks like it's a drivers problem but I've tried all types of drivers and none of them worked.
Does anybody have any similar issues? This is a brandnew laptop and things like this shouldn't happen.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Nichrome gives some good advice. I'd follow his steps first but...
I kinda get the feeling that your video card is not any good and it's what is causing the issues. The fact that you've tried a few different driver revisions and it's crashing doing anything stressful seems to indicate that as well.
Most likely you'll need to contact MSI to do an RMA in the end.

  • Need Help for my MSI gt60 0NE f3 hotkey

Hi guys, i brought MSI gt60 0NE october 2013 i installed games but now i want it back to factory reset. i used f3 hotkey for factory reset.
the question is after pressing f3 I should have an msi recovery manager pop up, but that is not what is happening.  After pressing f3 the windows boot manager comes up.  Under choose an operating system windows 7 is highlighted and I press enter. then system recovery option pop up (with the list of Repair your Computer,Systems Recovery etc.) instead of MSI manager option.
im looking for MSI manager option rather than system recovery option...

Not much you can do. Opening is pretty much a no go with tablets so a repair at your expense might be the only chance.

  • Compatibility Upgrade in MSI GT60-0NE

Hi i have a question in my MSI GT60 0NE-403US laptop.
it is that possible to upgrade my HDD to SSD?
if yes what brand and size is compatible? and theres a 2 slot of HDD can i put 2 SSD?
I want to upgrade also the RAM upgrade 12gb elixir 1600. what brand and compatible RAM?
    Thank you alot.
    Cheers

Yes, you can replace the 2.5 HDD to the same 2.5-inch SSD. For the recommended brand and size, since it's an old model, you can easily google some info on the Internet for reference.
About the RAM upgrade, you need to notice if it's DDR3L (low-voltage, 1.35V).
    if it's not DDR3L aka 1.35v ram
just get all new ram DDR3L and swap it will save your battery life and drop CPU temps a little

  • MSi GT60 0NE Which HDD bay that supports port SATAIII?

    Hi,
I'm going to upgrade my notebook MSi GT60 0NE with OCZ Vertex 4 (256GB) will it be compatible with my notebook?
And which one is the HDD bay with the SataIII / Sata3 ?
Is it the one with a purple circle or the yellow one?

    Hey Jim,
From what I have read/heard from MSI reps in Aus, the model (same as which I am importing) will not come with the RAID0 adapter, it is capable but the bridge will need to be bought separately. It should have one SATAII port which the 750GB RPM HDD will be mounted and nothing in the SATAIII bay. Making it quick and easy to drop in a single SSD or purchase the RAID bridge and some mSATA SSD's. I still havent decided if I will go single or RAID yet :P
Svet and Darkhawk are a wealth of information in these forums, so if I'm wrong they will be happy to assist with any more questions

CORRECTION: "It should have one SATAII port which the 750GB RPM HDD will be mounted and nothing in the SATAIII bay." This information is not from MSI reps this is from a local MSI retailer, where the tech said he only had to fit the RAID0 adapter, no mention of moving 750GB RPM HDD to the secondary bay.
As far as I'm aware, this information is true. This is similar to how my laptop came configured, except I had the model with the RAID adapter and a single SSD installed.
The only thing I'm not 100% sure of is if they include the second (SATA III port) board. I would ASSUME they do, but I do not know this for sure that they do as I haven't bought one without the RAID adapter.
From a personal standpoint, I really enjoy the raid adapter. It's a great feature, and really provides tremendous performance in a very small package. I took the 128 GB SSD that came with my laptop out, bought a mSATA to SATA adapter and gave it to a friend so he could use it in his desktop. I then put 2 x Mushkin Atlas Deluxe 240 GB drives in my laptop, and it performs exceptionally well with 0 problems.
    Just my thoughts.....

  • MSi GT60 0NE Ram upgrade

Hi, I've just bought The MSi GT60.
Everything are running smooth, and I'm thinking of upgrading my RAM.
It comes with a 2x4GB RAM and I want to upgrade it to 16GB of RAM.
So here's the RAM that comes with my GT60:
I'm planning to upgrade it with Vengeance® — 4GB High Performance Laptop Memory Upgrade Kit (CMSX4GX3M1A1600C9).
Can I upgrade it with 2x Vengeance® — 4GB so i could have 16gb (Will it decrease the performance)? Or should I discard the one that comes with the notebook and replace all of it with the Corsairs Vangeance?

Quote from: Warner on 20-October-12, 09:00:21
The laptop can support up to 32GB total if i7 processor is used.
DDR3-1333/1600 are supported by the processor.
Try to use identical memory modules in the system to allow better compatibility.
    Sincerely,
    Warner
    Ok, thanks...

  • MSI GT60 - Clicking sound from GPU area

Hey guys, maybe someone has an idea what's happening here.
I purchased a MSI GT60-ONC (I'm pretty sure it's that model, anyways. GTX670m running Win764) at the end of August. Been running great, and love the machine, but within the last few weeks I've noticed a an occasional sound coming from the GPU side of the laptop. You know when you drop some sort of electronic device, and when you move it around you hear that little tiny piece inside moving around you know you shouldn't? That's frankly the best way to explain the sound....only I've never dropped, smashed, smacked, or done anything of the sort with it.
Right when I first started hearing it, I instantly assumed it was something to do with the GPU fan (And it could still be), but the sound even tends to happen occasionally when the fan is in a low power state. It's been happening more frequently now, but I've yet to notice any sort of negative impact on my machine otherwise...
Just not sure if I should be inquiring with tech support or what....:S
    **EDIT**
Side note, maybe related, maybe not. Recently I noticed my Turbo button wasn't working (The service is running though), just tried uninstalling/reinstalling and it still doesn't work...maybe something do to with the clicking sound? haha

Getting the same thing - a tiny click/blip sound. I actually hear it when the Mac starts up. It tends to make the noise just before an alert sound, but it appears to be intermittent - the MacBook is about a month old.
I'll keep an eye/ear out for it for now.

  • MSI GT60-0NE - standard bios to UEFI

    Hello everybody,
I recently purchased a nice little GT60 which was delivered with freedos.
    It's original rom is E16F3IMS.10U.
I would to like to install Windows 8 pro but there is no way to enable UEFI on it
I take a look at it with AMIBCP, they were few options relative to UEFI:
    Boot section :
CSM support -> auto, enabled, disabled
UEFI boot -> auto, enabled, disabled
    Security section:
Secure boot control : enabled, disabled
    Secure boot policy menu
    key management menu
    Boot  section:
EFI -> launch EFI from filesystem devices
I compared the whole with E16F3IMS.50X.
There are so many more options in it that i didn't tried to flash the modified rom i made.
    My questions are :
Why the two bioses couldn't be crossflashed? Hardware differences??
Will MSI provide users a true UEFI bios for the "Win7" GT60 variant?

Quote from: hercule on 09-August-13, 20:40:49
    Apple or banana?
Just two cars that are largely enough for going from A to B. But one is faster and more effective
And where did i say that would flash something? Because someone told you not to do something, you will not try to understand why and what does it imply?
I am just in an understanding process and sorry but when correctly set, i did not have any problem of some sort with UEFI (Gigabyte, Lenovo...)
Secure boot is another story, the actual implementation is far from ideal.
Alright, UEFI is just designed to work with Windows 8 and Windows 7 is said by microsoft to support UEFI, but in most cases it won't even boot the installer (so that's why I'm on legacy mode now)
GPT Schemed disks can have more Primary partitions than MBR can have, this is an advantage if you have a very big HDD or SSD and you want to have multiple OS's on one device (MBR can only have 4 Primary Paritions, and 128 Logical drives if I'm correctly memorising..)
I have a disk of only 750 GB so UEFI isn't that much of an advantage to me memory wise... MBR (Legacy) is able to support disks up to 2.2 TB, GPT support disks 2.2+ TB..
So if you have a very large disk, UEFI is a MUST for you! If you do not have a disk as large as 2.3 TB or you don't need more than 4 Primary partitions.. than UEFI isn't an advantage for you!
UEFI supports Fast Boot (which isn't working in my opinion because it would really make a difference with Windows 7 I think but Windows 7 as already said, is a bit hard to install on a UEFI BIOS) Windows 8 has already Fast Boot build into it, because it's already NOT loading many drivers that aren't needed for bootup (Windows 7 does) that's why Windows 8 boots so quick, even on my old notebook (7 years old with a 220GB 5400RPM HDD) booted Windows 8 in just 8 Seconds! (This notebook obviously did not have the UEFI option, just a 'normal, old BIOS')
Secure Boot is just a pain in the ass when you try to boot from a USB so that should always be DISABLED otherwise you would constantly be switching it on and off....
Other special functions of UEFI are not known to me, but wouldn't make that much of difference I gues... My MSI Notebook came with Windows 8 pre-loaded, I thought it was a bit slow.. even after installing all the drivers! So I switched to Windows 7 and I noticed an Speed Increase and concluded that Windows 8 was holding my Notebook back (maybe it was the UEFI, but I don't think so... I just hate Windows 8 and the way it makes your PC so much slower...)
I hope you understand UEFI a bit better now (as you said you are in a understanding process) You can't just crossflash a Win8 BIOS version to a WIN7 BIOS version... that would often result in a BRICK or not able to control some features of the laptop (like a friend of yours) NO MATTER WHAT OS YOU ARE RUNNING, A NOTEBOOK THAT CAME WITH WIN7 PREINSTALLED HAS A WIN7 BIOS, IF YOU'RE RUNNING WIN8 ON IT YOU SHOULD STILL FLASH THE NEWEST WIN7 BIOS!
That's one of the most often made mistakes, and it immediately results in a BRICK! This will make the mobo unable to load the BIOS and so you are not able to retrieve the old one (the motherboard will need to be reprogrammed with the right BIOS) this means you need to RMA it to MSI
Hope you now understand a bit more of BIOS's

  • Reformat from Windows to Mac????

I bought my kids each a new Nano. Was traveling at the time. Only had my Windows notebook with me. Used it to get the iPods going. And now am trying to figure out how to reformat them for Mac OS, which is the machine on which we synch and use them from now forward.
    Can you help?
    Thanks!

Connect them to the Mac, select the iPod under the Devices frame, go to the Summary Tab to the right and click on Restore.

  • Reformatting from Windows to Mac

I have a fifth-gen iPod that is formatted for Windows. When I plug it into my iMac, it appears on the desktop as a hard drive, not as an iPod. iTunes doesn't recognize it at all. I want to reformat it to Mac, but since iTunes isn't recognizing it, I can't just select "Restore" from the iPod summary screen. Anybody have a suggestion?

So - I feel a little silly that I didn't try this in the first place, but I restarted the iMac with the iPod plugged in, and it saw it as an iPod. I restored it, and now all is well. Thanks for the help.

  • Upgrading gt70-0ne-276 from windows 8 to 8.1

My unit originally came with win 7.  I sucessfully upgraded to win 8.  When windows 8.1 came out I gave it a shot and it caused my laptop to take about 6 minutes to boot.  I came to find out that 8.1 was not supported on my model at the time after looking on msi website..  So I had to reinstall win 8.  Now I see on their website that it is compatible.  Looking at the bios, drivers and EC I don't see any changes that would indicate that 8.1 now works on this model.  Does anyone know specifically what the issue was to begin with that caused them to not recommend it?  I want to give it another shot.

I check MSI Website and no driver for your NB for Windows 8.1.
The problem about why not supported are some driver are not available for some component for Windows 8.1 and because of that, no certified driver approve by Microsoft, they can't offer it on MSI website.
Now the point are only some driver should not be compatible, I think some case the BT or touchpad, depend of model.
driver and utility like SCM should be download from another model like GT70 2OE.
Normally get windows 8.1 should not make it slow, only get something don't work, and it's recommanded to uninstall all driver first before make the update to Windows 8.1 and then reinstall the last one found on an other model after update.
I know some people do it and work well. But MSI will never confirm it work and it can happen you lose some function, so you have to choice, did Windows 8.1 will give you something you need and it's ok to try it and maybe lose something or you want it only because it's the latest version ? Make your choice base on your need

  • MSI GT60 GPU upgrade from MSI ?

    Hi there,
So just recently I was browsing through the interwebs, when I came across a thread when a guy was walking about how he upgraded his MSI with nvidia 770m to 970m. Now he had to do a minor adjustment to the 970m graphics card (sand down something in the gpu, not sure what though :S, something with aluminum block ? ), anyways after he did that, he just put the gpu back in this laptop and did the bios update and his laptop is working perfectly. What I wanted to know is why doesn't MSI give us an option to upgrade legally, I mean something like what they are doing with the gt72 or the gt80 when they are providing buyers upgrade kits. I would love to upgrade my gpu on my laptop, and I would happily give my money to MSI if they can make an upgrade kit for the GT60's and the GT70's. I mean the GPU is MXM and the thread clearly shows that it is upgradable so why not? I know this is probably a dumb question, but I really wanted to know.

Cost should be the same as the GT72 upgrade as both the heatsink and GPU are both already available to MSI to release.  At this point though who cares.  You can get a 970m and 980m cheaper than what MSI is selling their kits for.  And the 700m and 800m heatsink can be easily modded to work with the new cards.  So no big loss if they don't ever release an official kit IMO.  Just DIY and be done with it.
