MSI GT660 Upgrade CPU and/or GPU

I've searched the forum(and net) for this question but came up empty. Is it possible to upgrade MSI GT660's CPU(current i7-740QM) and/or GPU(current GTX-285M)? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Any idea if GPU on it is MXM 3.0 B(like on GX660) or a different type? If its possible - which(better) CPU/GPU are available that would fit?
Thanks in advance!!!
P.S. If anyone needs any help on upgrading RAM or HDD/SDD on this model - post your question here as i have done both(went to 10GB(4/4/2) of RAM, upgraded HDD to faster Samsung M4 and added 120Gb Sata6G SSD to 2nd bay) and will be glad to walk you through this(quite simple) process.
Update: SOmeone send me a link to this - http://50.22.71.151/store/msi-nvidia-gtx-560m-1-5g-gddr5-mxm-3b-graphics-card.html
And accoring to it GT660 is in fact MXM v3.0 B compatible. Just want to confirm it before pulling the trigger though(also would prefer a bit faster card since 560m is not much faster than my gtx-285m(well not faster to justify the upgrade price), was hoping to get AMD 6970M(or 6990 perhaps) if thats compatible with my system(already have 150w PSU)

Hi,
The following book shows you CPU's supported from day one:
  h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02641795.pdf
I don't think you can upgrade the GPU unless buying a new motherboard and many things.
Regards.

  • MSI KT8 Neo2 F board, upgraded cpu and used MSIs Live Update, now unstable BSODs

I've had this mobo for almost 2 yrs now with an AMD 3500+ cpu and recently upgraded that to the FX-55. To do that, it required using MSIs Live Update and needed newer chipset drivers. It has the latest bios according to Live Update.
It took a few attempts but finally booted w/o BSODs and has been running for over 1 week BUT is still not right. It's sometimes unstable and will crash (BSOD) just by starting up a browser. I had the bios settings at "optimized" and have tryed a few other changes but so far, I'm not gaining. Last night I couldn't keep it running more than a few minutes w/o it crashing.
I have the MSI manual for my board and plan to spend some more time playing with it tonight but might anyone here have any ideas? It's not running hot (reads 50C) and was stable before with the 3500+. I've tryed "Fail Safe" bios settings too but nothing's better that way either.
I'm hoping that someone here has a few ideas?
    Perhaps related?
After initially running this with the new cpu, I'd see the "searching for MAC address" message and it'd hang there on boot. Someone told me that was because it was trying to do a network boot, selected in the boot sequence SO I've unselected that and that's when things got worse (oddly as it shouldn't IMO). One can select the 3+ boot devices (floppy, USB, CD-DVD rom, HDD) and it use to see the HDDs (2) before but now I'm not (only floppy and CD-DVD rom) and if I unselect the ethernet option (boot other devices), it fails to boot at all and says "insert floppy" as if I was installing Win98 way back when (running XP Pro btw). Something's definately not right with my bios selections.

Let's go back to basics here for a bit. Start by posting your complete specs in your signature like we do. Make sure that your PSU values are also in there.
Let's also look at some tests to help determine where the issue is. I would recommend Memtest86+, OCCT, Prime95, and 3DMarks as a great first series. Also get CPUz and lets see what it shows for CPU and Memory.
If we can get an idea where things begin to fall apart then maybe we can determine if this is driver, hardware or some other issue without having to make the flash happen first. The reason why I am avoiding the flash at this point is that if things are mostly working maybe there is some other cause than Bios. We know that some FX's work with 3.x and some that don't. So I would like to try a bit of checking before we dive into a flash that could cause more issues than it solves if we get this wrong. As things are mostly working now we can assume at least for the moment that maybe the flash is not needed. If we don't see anything during testing that sheds some light then maybe we go ahead with the flash.
That is if your willing to take some time to try and sort this out and maybe learn some stuff in the process. It is of course your call and we will respect whichever decission you make here.

  • MSI GT70 0ND-219US Bios settings for fastest cpu, and maybe gpu performance?

What is the best BIOS's settings (I have the unlocked BIOS)
For overclock cpu on startup and GPU

Honestly? Stock. There's little to no performance gain overall for the CPU.
You can't change the GPU performance from the BIOS.
If you're asking these types of questions, you're probably better off not changing anything without doing a TON of research first. There's plenty of website out there that detail what you can do, and why, and how it really isn't very effective (especially in the mobile space) just because you can't increase it as much as you can on the desktop space (in some cases).
Unless you have upgraded the CPU from the 3610 that was originally installed in your laptop, overclocking is really pointless.

  • Upgrade CPU and RAM on Lenovo G480

Hello, I wanted to ask something: can I upgrade my CPU on my lenovo G480? And in case of a positive answer, which CPU's are compatible with it? Also, I bought an 8gb RAM, and installed it on my notebook, and it says that I have 12 GB of ram, but I read somewhere else that I can only have 8 GB of ram on my notebook... this means that what the system says is a lie and thus I still can only use 4gb of ram of the 12 that it shows? Thanks in advance.

    Hi Snipercat94,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are looking for CPU & memory up-gradation for your Lenovo G480.
Yes, you can up-grade the processor and the list is available in Hardware Maintenance Manual you can check it on page 101.
It is good to know that G480 is detecting 12 GB of RAM, and as per the OS it is showing 4 GB RAM that means you system is having 32bit Operating System, suggest you to install 64bit Operating System.
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards,
    Hemanth Kumar

  • Upgraded CPU and motherboard

How do I make arch get back in touch with the install? Do I need to delete a couple files?  Rerun mkinitcpio?  I can chroot back into it, just need to know what to do.  Thanks.

I'm sorry, I meant to get back to you guys on this, but couldn't.  Arch is up, baybe.
There wasn't really a problem, actually.  You think kernel panic is a problem, and it is, but in this case it was something I caused before I even switched the motherboard and CPU.
I can't remember what it was because I had not been using arch for some time.  I can say I do know I left it with a kernel panic, before, and just never bothered fixing it..and then...
...on top of that the image configuration file had specified modules for the old motherboard.  So, I just updated with pacman, and set the configuration to default, re-ran mkinitcpio and voila.  (Sorry, I nearly forgot to mention it was necessary to regenerate the xorg.conf)  So you see, had I not been monkeying around with it so much before, it would have just worked.  LOL.
But now that I have your attention, I'm wondering why the system seems noticeably less responsive than a much slower VIA motherboard that I had been using.  The new one is a K8T800 with an Opteron 144 in dual channel with 1gb of RAM and a 6600GT 128-bit 128mb AGP card.  It replaced an Nforce2.  The more responsive system is an AMD 1700+ with 512mb of RAM in single-channel with a Dell OEM MX4000 64-bit video card using 64mb of RAM.  It seems like the hesitation is DMA related, as the Hdd always reads while the application waits.  Any thoughts at all, including why rain has to be so cold, are entirely welcome.
Additionally, glxgears gives FPS about half what it should be.

  • Upgrading CPU and Graphics Card

I've decided to go for an upgrade on my laptop from dual core to quad core and upgrade the graphics card. I'm looking forward to the release of Diablo 3 and would like to play it with good settings to enjoy the experience more(along with other general gaming).
However, after a good 1-2 hours of googling, I've found next to nothing on what parts I need to upgrade my laptop. I did come across one website but just came back with no results for the specifications I put in.
So it would be nice if someone could point me in the right direction or even a direct link to a reccomended part.
I have a HP Pavilion dv6 1210sa. I am upgrading the RAM but already had advice on that .
PS - Would like 2+ GH'z x4 on the processor and 1gb on the graphics card, if possible.

    You're very welcome.
I agree. Finding the parts cheaply could be hard.
You can enter the part numbers in the HP site below and see what comes up.
    http://h20141.www2.hp.com/Hpparts/Default.aspx?mscssid=A81A1CB37CF34781BBACF8243D7C479E
For example, the system board with the best graphics (HD 4650) is $416 on the HP part store above.
If you wanted to install the best processor (ZM-87), that will set ya back $267.19.
So, you can see what I mean by you may bet better off selling and buying one you would really be happy with.
You're looking at almost $700 just for these two components. I don't know what a notebook of that caliber would cost, but I don't think it would be a much more than that.

  • Upgrading Thinkpad W520 CPU and RAID is it possible.

Hello, I have Thinkpad W520. I'm interested two things. First is CPU upgrade. Which is highest CPU for this model? And Can I upgrade to 3rd generation CPU? As I see Ivy Bridge CPU use same socket.  Second is RAID. I havent RAID option on my laptop. Is it possible to add this option? And last question I have warranty. Is it possible throught  warranty upgrade CPU and setup RAID? Of course not for free.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

AFAIK, you can only upgrade within the Sandy Bridge generation. RAID is integral to the motherboard (you'd have to replace the motherboard with one that has RAID).
I don't think warranty does upgrades.

  • Cc2014 not using all CPU cores or GPU

I'm using the new CC2014, and I exported a project straight out of Premiere and it utilized all 8 of my CPU and my GPU. When I export using Adobe Media Encoder, it only uses one core and doesn't seem to use the GPU at all. I tried changing the setting to from GPU to software only, and it didn't seem to make a difference.

Just found out, that drag and drop PPro Sequences into AME seems to be a work-around.Plus unchecking the "Import Sequences Natively" in AME.
Well, ..indeed it worked. Not very convenient though and it's a bug that's been around for a while (7 month!! according to some users).
Please fix this, cannot be too hard, can it?
What bothers me even more is a still low CPU usage of around 35% over all when exporting....
    My system:
    i7-5930K @ 4.40GHz (overclocked)

  • Portege R500 - Upgrade procesor and RAM

Can I upgrade proceror and RAM in my R500?
Is possible?? If yes, how procesor can i used?
    Robert

    hi RoboS,
first of all the modell number is needed to check which hardware is in the machine.
to upgrade ram: easy - there should be a door marked with a ram-symbol on the bottom of the machine. open up and insert more memory
make sure that the system is powerless: remove ac-adapter and battery!
make also sure that the new ram modules meets the specifications.
upgrade the cpu: much more difficult and toshiba dont support this upgrade...
search for your modeltype with a bigger cpu and check if it has a socket (should be), this cpu should go together with your machine...
but remember: double the ram isnt that expensive than upgrade cpu and you have more fun with a bigger amount auf ram than a bit faster cpu....

  • MSI GT70 0ND-444US CPU and GPU upgrade

So I have had the GT70 0ND-444US for almost 2 years now, It's an amazing laptop - the only issue is, the GPU is getting outdated and slow for today's games and I was wondering what are my options for upgrading to a new GPU like the GTX 770M? or the GTX 970M? Would cooling be a problem? Also what are my options of upgrading the i7-3630QM to something better?

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/the-official-msi-gt60-70-970m-980m-upgrade-thread.765058/
    Get the 970m.
I would upgrade to either a 3740qm or 3840qm.  They have a few unlocked turbo bins and you'll get phenomenal performance from those chips.
You can upgrade an extreme mobile CPU (3920xm or 3940xm) but they are more expensive usually and also run hotter than the previous mentioned quads.

  • CPU and GPU slow down after system upgrade

Ok, I can't find anything similar to the question I have...but this forum goes on forever
As my system specs appear below, my machine was running quite comfortably a week ago, with same setup...minus the acrylic case and second 120GB hard drive.
    At that stage I had "nomal" benchmarking scores 3dmark03 - 5850, Aquamark3 41.000, PC mark 2002 - cpu7020 mem8438 hdd1050.
Life was good and I loved my system
Then I decided it would be cool to upgrade to an acrylic case (which has better cooling with 3 fans) and a second 120 GB HDD to make a striped raid array.
My first concern was the raid Array. I was carefull to buy the exact same seagate hard drive, size etc. the original was only a month old anyway. The second was to use the intel southbridge chip for SATA RAID or the Promise controller? After researching these forums I decided to go with the Intel as it has more possible bandwidth and doesn't sit on the PCI bus.
I got the new case and wearing those stupid white gloves, proceeded to move the components over and trash my "old" metal case.
The windows NTFS format (full) flew by in 30 seconds and I was really impressed.
Once windows xp and all it's drivers and updates were installed, incl sound and graphics etc. I did a 3Dmark 2001 test before upgrading to Dx9...what a bad mark! 3Dmark2001SE - 9950 (terrible for this system).
    I thought it was a DX problem...so I installed Dx9
Then opened that corecenter program (the old one, the one that doesn't crash...)
and my CPU was about 5c hotter than usual, it was running at 40-42c (I have standard intel cooling fan). It went up to 55 at times when running PC mark 2002.
This didn't concern me too much a the system was stable at 32-34c and the northbridge read 60c (but we all know that's not true , more like 35ish.
    My PC mark 2002 is now cpu4200 - mem4800 - hdd1800
(at least the HDD improved!) LOL
    I ran Aquamark3 next...29,900 (ouch!)
Previously my CPU was 8,700 and GPU was 5300
now the CPU read 4400 and the GPU 4600
I don't really notice the speed loss when working, but games and benchmarks tell a different story.
So, My question: What has happened? Why is my CPU power cut in half? and the graphics card slightly slower? The memory speed stayed the same and the HDD speed improved....not a worthwhile upgrade IMO
    What went wrong?
    Here are my theories.
    1) The CPU and system case is getting too hot
Does the CPU "throttle" when it overheats? this could be the reason.
Also both HDD get really hot and the fan in front blows air over them, this hot air could be going over the CPU or GPU. Maybe get 2 HDD coolers?
should I buy a better CPU cooler like the Thermaltake spark7+ ?
    2) The PSU does not have enough watts
I couldn't find traces of voltage lack or spikes...but it could still be a problem
    3) The RAID0 array is a strain on the CPU and chipset
      I'm not sure about this.
My appologies for the lengthy thread, but I wanted to be sure that anyone trying to figure this out had as much info as possible
Thanks if u can help me figure this out.

Well, your temps sound allright, no need to worry them, if they really operate at that level.

The solution to set the FSB to 201Mhz sounds good. But do I set this in the BIOS or with Corecenter in windoze?
Propably meant to adust your FSB at BIOS, at least that is what I would suggest.

I will try to re-install the VGA drivers because something strange DID happen when I first installed them. I started with the hercules driver CD, this installed CAT 3.2 drivers. I then upgraded to CAT 3.7 and before it completed I got an error window (send, dont send).
Remove drivers AND ATI control panel first, and then re-install. Use drivers from ATI site, and rather Catalyst 3.7. I Have had problems with 3.8 Catalysts.

Still wouldn't explain why the CPU seems so crippled. I have managed to get a "normal cpu score of 7000+ in PCmark2002 by shutting down, restarting later and killing every process except explorer.
Do you have any processes that seem to eat more juice thant hey should?  Arrange your processes by CPU usage and see if there is something strange.

If this cant be fixed I will reinstall over the weekend. Does anyone know of the RAID0 array on the southbridge causing a system slowdown?
I'm using Intel RAID and it works perfectly, no extra CPU usage is shown and it's pleasantly fast!
And Install latest Intel INF updates and Application Accelerator from Intel site. That's what I'm using, and works fine.

  • Cpu and motherboard upgrade

I want to upgrade my cpu to a good one so I need a mother board and the cpu my budget is 150 or should I build my own pc I have a gpu in my pic at the moment any suggestions

    hi,
firstly you need to be clear as to whether you want any future upgrades or not(namely a graphics card,in the case of which a power supply upgrade would also be needed)
assuming you only need a cpu and mobo upgrade i must say that 150$ is a little low for upgrading both...a decent cpu comes at that price...
for the cpu id recommend, firstly ,something from intel as they last longer than their amd counterparts...you could look at the following-
http://www.amazon.com/AMD-FD6300WMHKBOX-FX-6300-6-Core-Processor/dp/B009O7YORK/ref=sr_1_1?s=electron... you REALLY want something from amd this is it)
intel core i3-3210,4150(i'd go for this)
as for the mobo...if you want the intel cpu it has to be an lga 1150 socket type...at a lower price range, the
    Intel DH87RL 4th Generation
mobo is quite good, the MSI B85M-G43 Motherboard is also worth a look(this one is my recommendation)
for an amd it has to be of the am3 socket type-the
Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 Motherboard is what id get
youll have to stretch to around 200 at the least
this is just an outline...anything else you need, just ask

  • Premiere Pro CC only using 30% CPU and none of the GPU

    Hi,
I’m very new to video editing (actually I have no Idea what H264, or avi or mp4 or mov is, I just need the video to work) and I have never used Premiere Pro before. Now I'm trying the CC 7.0 trial.
My goal is to achieve the fastest rendering times possible.
Today I have upgraded my PC for maximal performance in video editing:
    Intel i7 4930K (12threads)
    Radeon 6950 (2GB)
    16GB RAM
    SSD
I have a recorded video of me playing a PC game in .avi 2552*1348 resolution (2560*1440 monitor without some borders).
I have set export to H.264 and settings to match source (resolution 2552*1348, 30 FPS, Progressive, Square pixels, NTSC, main, 5.0).
But when rendering (no effects, just cutting) the program only uses 22-45% of the entire CPU and none of the GPU.
The best result with this stress was cca 1:1 rendering:movie length. I'm using 16GB RAM, I tried 32GB and 64GB and the stress on CPU and GPU was the same and the rendering times changed only slightly.
I have an SSD and the read write speeds during rendering are 1-9 MB/s so there is plenty of performance left.
Frankly, this 1:1 performance offers Power Director 11 which I have been using so far. (When editing 1080p the ratio in PP is cca 1:2,5, the same as in Power Director.)
So when the disks are idle, the GPU is idle, more RAM changes nothing and the CPU only works on 1/3 its capacity, what is the bottleneck?
I want to use 100% of the CPU and 100% of the GPU and have the rendering:movie say 0,3:1 or so.
What can I change to fully use the processing power of my computer?
    Thanks

  • Upgraded CPU with AE CC and I get less performance!

    Hello everyone!
I recently started working with the CC suite.
My configuration is based on a 1366 motherboard and I have 24 GBs of RAM.
Now when I first started using AE, my I7 920 worked really well but I wanted to see how much faster rendering times I could get by upgrading to a i7 990x.
Well, it seems that my rendering times have nearly doubled since I installed my 990x!
If I don't use multiprocessing ON when rendering, one of my projects takes 16 minutes to render (used to take 7 and a half), and trying different settings under multiprocessing gives me variable results.
At best I can get close to my previous (i7 920) fastest rendering time. Which really makes no sense! The 990x has 6 cores and a higher frequency!
The template I am using as a test uses no weird plug ins, just prerendered flares and motion blur.
I also noticed that on my windows experience index, my CPU now has a score of 6.9. Now that can't be right?
My mobo is a EVGA SLI Classified and my GPU is a 660 GTX.
Any help is apreciated, whether it's 990x experience or multiprocessing settings for 6 cores and 24GBs of RAM.
    Thank you.

More cores = increased parallelization = less effective cycles per core, meaning any operation that is only mildly multi-threaded or not at all will run on just one core and potentially feel/ be slower since the actual per core clock is determined by a multitude of factors that the processor and its features like TurboBoost are trying to figure out at runtime. As a result, it could decide to split tasks so unfavorably, it cycles through all cores every x number of clock cycles, but each core only then blips for a nanosecond. Or on the other hand it locks everything to just one core. Add to that whatever the operating system manages and you could effectively end up with only a fraction of your theoretical processing power on whatever is sued as the primary processing core. And if you didn't already guess it: Surprise, surprise, temporal operations in AE like calculating motion blur are mostly single-threaded because they require linear progression and evaluation of multiple states in a given slice of time. Likewise, you could be using specific CoDecs, your I/O performance could suck and a million otehr things could go wrong. This of course is a crude simplification, but you get the picture. Overall, just getting a new machine and expecting AE to do miracles is just slightly naive (no offense). There is simply too many things to consider and without actualyl knowing any hard facts like what comp settings, render settings and so on you actualyl use, nobody can realyl know. We could even go so far and just assume that you render to a slow external USB drive and then what you see would probably even be toatlly expected/ expectable.
