MSI GT683DX-840US Will Not Boot

Hello forum members,
I have been the happy owner of a $1,400 MSI GT683DX-840US laptop for around three months now. When I first got the machine in June, I replaced the bloatware filled default install with a fresh copy of Windows 7 Ultimate x64. All was going well, besides some less than perfect things about the system:
-The action button area under the screen was very scratched, and it looked like a refurbished laptop even though I bought it new from NewEgg.
-When playing Microsoft Flight Simulator X, the landscape would have horizontal glitches running down the screen when looking at the surrounding terrain.
-When I let my little brother play MineCraft on the machine, the graphics card would make a strange buzzing sound on the main menu, but would be gone once in game.

It was working fine, apart from the above mentioned issues, until two nights ago. I had nothing open besides a webbrowser (Opera) which had one tab open on FaceBook. I went to grab a drink, and when I came back the operating system was completely frozen. At this point I tried (in order):
-Moving USB mouse (No response)
-Moving trackpad (No response)
-Pressing Windows key (No response)
-Ctrl+Alt+Del (No response)
-Pressed and help power button (Laptop shut down)
Thinking nothing of it, I pressed the power button again and it went through the normal startup sequence of Black Screen->BIOS->Starting Windows.
The 4 glowing orbs of the Windows 7 logo came up and made the glowing Microsoft icon, everything looked fine. It was only after 30 minutes that I realized something was wrong with the system, it was stuck at the Starting Windows screen.
I rebooted using the power button, and pressed F8 repeatedly to get to the advanced boot menu. I started in Safe Mode, and watched the drivers scroll by. When CLASSPNP.SYS came up, the system stopped there. I left it for over 3 hours, and it did not proceed past CLASSPNP.SYS. I looked up what that file does, and apparently it scans for hardware changes.
At this point I still thought it was a software issue, so I rebooted again and tried to get into Recovery. Lo and behold, Recovery wouldn't load past the green scrolling Vista-like loading screen.
Feeling a little panicked, I grabbed a Windows 7 Ultimate DVD and tried to boot from it. It showed the "Loading Files" screen with the white loading bar. This went by and proceeded to the Windows 7 "Starting Windows" screen. It got stuck there as well. The lingering thought that this might be more than a corrupt system was slowly becoming a reality.
Out of desperation, I burned a Ubuntu CD and a Linux Mint DVD. Ubuntu would show a purple screen and then sit waiting at a black screen with a blinking insert point (I couldn't type anything here). Linux Mint would get to the startup menu where you can choose between normal startup, memory test, self diagnostic, etc. When normal startup was initiated, it did the same thing as Ubuntu, but the screen was a light gray instead of black.
Possible Problem #1: MEMORY (Result: Not the issue)
Now I thought it might be a memory module having gone bad, so I took all three modules out (The ones under the keyboard are very fun to get to) and replaced them with one temporary 4GB module from a known working laptop. It had the same issues. I then tried to use one memory module at a time, same issue. I then put the 3 modules back in and used MemTest86 from a CD (which loaded fine) and ran the test for 10 hours. It made 5 complete passes and showed no errors. Hereby I ruled out memory being the problem.
Possible Problem #2: USB Devices/etc (Result: Not the issue)
I disconnected all external connections such as ethernet, usb devices, SDCard in the card reader, and DVD media. The problem persists.
Possible Problem #3: BIOS incorrectly configured (Result: Not the issue)
I reset the BIOS to default settings, problem persists.
Possible Problem #4: HHD (Not the issue)
Problem persists even with HHD removed and turned off as a boot device. Laptop will still not load either the W7 DVD or the Linux distros.
I then burned myself a copy of UBCD on another laptop. The basic menu worked fine. I entered Parted Magic and got to its menu successfully as well, but only if I used the "FailSafe" boot option. I was then able to get into the GUI environment from the live CD, and was able to clone my entire hard drive to an external 2TB drive using the preloaded Clonezilla. At this point, my data is safe in 2 locations, so I would not mind reinstalling the OS (If I had that option).
Other than what is stated above, I have tried:
-Removing battery and power adapter for 30 minutes
-Holding power button for 30 seconds
-Tried loading with Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista CD/DVD's. No joy for any of them.
-Tried loading Safe Mode with all three options (Default, Networking, Cmd prompt) which all stopped at CLASSPNP.SYS
-Left laptop on loading Safe Mode (stuck at CLASSPNP.SYS) for 9 hours overnight, no luck.
Extra information:
-I have NEVER had this issue before with this machine (such as freezing, long startups, etc.)
-I have NEVER had any BSOD with this machine.
-I installed Virtual Router and the new MSI Suite during last successful operation.
I have since contacted MSI customer support, and they instructed me to fill out an online RMA form. I did so about 4 hours ago, but I have not received a confirmation email or anything so far, is this normal?
I need this laptop for my studies, as I am a Software Engineering mayor, and until I get this laptop back in working order I will be using a 2008 MacBook with the OS (OSX) that I dread.
Please give me your suggestions or other advice. Right now I am almost certain it is either the motherboard or graphics card, and I'm leaning towards the latter.

I put this all together, and it simply will not boot. Hard drives fire up, all my fans spin, optical drives try to read but I get no post to the screen whatsoever.
Also, I would like to add that I had two GeForce 8800gt's since I was the proud (sarcasm) owner of an eVGA 750 Sli FTW. I also own an MSI Radeon 1550 graphics card. All three were tried, system would post with none of them.
Any help you guys might be able to give would be extremely helpful, thanks in advance.

MSI 945GT Speedster will not boot with Authentec Biometric/Fingerprint Reader

Has anybody else seen POST problems with USB devices attached? My 945GT Speedster-A4R systems will not POST when Authentec AES2501A Fingerprint readers are attached. I unplug the devices and the systems work fine. If I plug the devices in while the system is on, they work fine too and the drivers load.
For these sensors to be used properly, as user login devices, they really need to be present during startup. Plugging them in after startup is not really an option. Any thoughts?

First off, I appreciate the responses. I have some updates, but I still have the problem too...
MSI Tech Support gave me a beta BIOS to try, and it did not fix the problem (v1.2b5).
I have not completely pinned out the USB connectors, but I am only using the USB adapter that came with the motherboard. I am not using any "front panel" USB ports on the chassis. This motherboard ships with a 4 port USB adapter that takes up a PCI slot in the chassis. This adapter cables back to the two yellow USB headers on the motherboard. I would sincerely hope that MSI correctly matched the pinouts of the USB ports to the pinouts on the motherboard - the connectors are keyed and only go on one way.
I disabled "Boot to Other Devices." No help.
I also found another USB device that causes the same hang. I gave my kids Sandisk Sansa c250 MP3 players for Christmas. When these devices are plugged in hot, they work fine. If they are plugged in, and we boot or reboot the system, the machines lock up during POST, just like when the Biometric readers are attached. It is beggining to look like there is some serious USB compatibility issue with this motherboard. It is also not just one bad board - I have two systems that behave the same way right now.

MSI NEO-FISR Will not Boot

I HAVE:
Unplugged everything except for boot HDD, Video, Sound, NIC, Mouse, Keyboard.
Reset CMOS Jumper
Held Ctrl Home
About a week ago, the NIC on the board went bad. I didn't want to RMA it since a PCI NIC is only 5 -10 bucks, and shipping is at least as much with no mobo for a month. So, I installed a PCI NIC.
No problems, been running fine until today. I was fiddling with my power strip, unplugging something and accidentily unplugged the PC, but I don't think this has anything to do with it because it booted once before then. When I plugged it in, it booted to Windows login and froze. Now it won't start at all. Not a power problem, because everything starts and spins up. Just no picture, nothing. The lights on the box thingy (forget what it's called, but you know what i mean, the thing with the USBS and the 4 lights), anyway, it'll light up the top Left one in green, then every once and a while, it'll light up all four in a flash, then go back to just top left. Keeps running, just no picture.
It's probaly not the graphics card, because the lights don't light up as they should.
It's not the monitor, I tried my secondary one.
It's not the CMOS, I used the jumper and reset it.
It's not the bios, because I havn't updated it recently (because MSI hasn't released one in ages).
Another odd quirk, the pc will usually turn off immediatly when the power is hit if it's still booting, but it does as if it's in windows. I have to hold it down for it to power off.
If It's broke i'm not really sure I want to RMA or just buy a new mobo/processor. It's a little out of date, plus I assume RMAing takes quite some time and I can't live without my fast machine for too long.

It worked! Wow that's wierd. I've never had something as minor as a NIC cause a complete blackout before.
Chalk that one down as the wierdest computer problem i've ever had.
Guess I shouldn't of used that old thing that was lying in my parts box! rofl, guess I'd better cough up 5 bucks for a new one!

Holy crap now the onboard NIC works. Lol, thats quirky. One problem fixed another. I suppose my clearing the CMOS repaired something. Couple days ago i'd stick the cable in and it'd be black. Now it lights up like a firecracker and connects again. Sometimes these things just wanna make me do this: .

MSI Kt6 and NEW Msi 6600GT AGP will not boot up!

My Girlfriend's computer.
I put this new video card in today MSI 6600GT AGP .For the 2nd time.
It frezzing up at startup on this screen....
"GO TO SET UP ...Press F11 , F10 ,Tab: LOGO Ckecking NVRAM..."
I rma the 1st one . Now 2nd 6600 Gt card samething.frezzing up too.
This time I put it in my PC, MSI K8T Neo, 3000 64 processor (Socket 754)
It worked Great!!!
6600GT power cord is hooked up.
So it must be the motherboard?

Don't think you have to flash the BIOS. Nor do I think there is a problem with the mobo.
Two main reasons for boot problems are:
PSU with not enough grunt - please say something about it.
Memory timings are too tight - don't have any special or ultra settings.
The power cable has not been attached to the graphics card - don't know really if it is needed but I think so.
Please note that a weak PSU might not reveal itself til the power cable is connected.
About flashing BIOS, if you use the LiveUpdate program that came on the MSI install CD, it is no more trouble than upgrading any driver. But please make sure you get the right BIOS, and that it solves the issue you got.

MSI H55M ED55 will not boot

Hello everybody,
Recently I purchased said motherboard with a core i3 530 processor.
The problem is that windows fails to load. The pc restarts every time the Windows logo appears.
I have tried several things wich I will summarize:
I tried different Hdd's wich both had windows 7 64bit on it,
I tried to install windows via dvd, but the pc restarted again before the installation,
I tried different Psu's wich both work on another pc(this goes for all components btw except processor and mainbord),
I tried with and without the igp,
I tried different memory modules; one from OCZ and one from G.E.I.L. I tested them at 1066 and 1333 mhz with cas latancy 9-9-9-24 and mem voltage @ 1.5, 1.55 and 1.6 volts. The OCZ normaly runs @ 1600, cas 7-7-7-21 1.65 volt and the G.E.I.L. @ 1333 cas 9-9-9-24 1.5volt.
I tried with one, two and four memory sticks,
I tried to clear Cmos a dozen times(with the powercord removed) after the boot it says that the CMOS isn't correct or something like that. I get to choise to go to setup(F1) or to just continue(F2) I tried both,
I tried with BIOS 1.2, 1.6 and 1.7,
I also did a memtest via dos with the G.E.I.L. kit and a memtest via windows with the OCZ kit, they both succeeded without errors.
The capacity of the sticks is 2gb per stick.
The hdd was 1.5 tb and 80gb(IDE).
The PSU was also from OCZ(600watts) and the other one was 350 watts. I'm not sure about the brand, FSP electronics or something like that.
Does anybody know what might be wrong? The guy from whom I purchased it said that it had been working last time he used it. He seems like an honest bloke(lots of positive feedback and he was helpful).
One more thing btw, the temp of the processor was 26 degrees, wich must be cool enough.

I had an H55-GD65 and had a similar problem with PC crash/restarting sometimes not very often sometimes several time one time after another and it ended up a problem with RAM compatibility with the original BIOS. All of the 1156 socket MB's had quite a few BIOS updates for memory compatibility issues.
I don't see why you would need more than 2 x 2GB RAM for your system especially if it's just used for HTPC.
Do you know what BIOS version is currently on the MB? You can find that info in 'Start' > 'All programs' > 'Accessories' > 'System tools' > 'System information'

Currently I'm using 4GB of GeiL ram. The 8gb OCZ ram is in my other pc right now.
The BIOS I'm using is 1.7.
I tried with the IGP but that turned out to be more problematic. Then I inserted the graphics card and turned on the oc genie button and everything seems to be fine.
I will run orthos for a couple of hours and if the pc won't crash, then I think I solved my problem.
Strange, as it is ocing my pc right now and it's more stable than stock .

MSI K7N2G-ILSR will not boot from CD!!!

I cannot get this thing to boot from a CD for the life of me. I have tried using 4 different CD drives. I have tried both IDE channels. I have ran both drives jumperless.
Bios recognises the drive. I have Floppy, CDROM, HDD1 as the boot sequence. I have tried switching the boot sequence around.
I am completely stumped and extremely frustrated. Somebody, please help me. ANY advice would be appreciated, let's get this problem solved!

this sounds like mb jumpers are misfigured....set jumper j10 to pins 1-2 and make sure j11 is inplace......boot the system and set fsb to 133....fsb/dram to 1.1 all timings manual..6/3/3/2.5.....everything else at defaults....see if it will run.

the jumpers were in the wrong place. i should have read the manual more in depth instead of being in a hurry. i feel like such an idiot!

MSI 770-G45 will not boot/POST

I just built a new computer yesterday (specs in signature) and have been trying to get it to work all day.
It powers on, all fans start up for all components (CPU heatsink fan, GPU heatsink fan, etc) but there's no POST beep and no signal for the graphics card.
CPU is seated correctly, LEDs are active to phase 4. All cables/components are secure, nothing is loose.
I've tested each DIMM slot individually, tried booting with only 1 stick of RAM with no luck. I've tried RAM from another computer that I know works with the same results. Tried a different video card, tried with no video card to see if I could get it to POST at all.
Tried three different hard drives, but I don't even think the computer is getting to BIOS.
Reset CMOS to no effect.
The only time I've ever gotten any sound from the motherboard speaker is when I took all the RAM out and powered it on, and it gave a RAM error, so at least it's getting that far in POST?
I'm guessing it's a RAM compatibility problem, or a defective motherboard, but I could be missing something obvious.

Yes you know he did it right? It could never happen any other way. My crystal ball must be foggy cause I can not in any way know if they bent the pins themself or not.
It's a new CPU under warranty, I would just call up say it was shipped that way and see where I get to. I would go to the retail first then if no help try manufacturer. Best bet would be retail and if it was shipped by UPS or something you can posibally claim damage in shipping.

Msi 6511 will not boot

I received an msi 6511 and it will not boot, I only get a light on the floppy but I can not tell if the other leds are on because they are not hooked up (I do not have the manual to this board)!! The specs are
1.2 GHz amd athelon
384 mb pc100 sdram
onboard sound
onboard video
450 watt psu
Any help would be much appreciated!

Your athlon could either have a 100 fsb or a 133, they came both ways. If it is one with a 133fsb then the memory (PC100) is not fast enough to let it boot. Set jumper J6 to pins 2-3 for a 100mhz fsb so that the cpu fsb will match the memory.
See attached link for jumper settings if you don't have the manual. This appears to have been an oem motherboard used by packard bell among others.

MSI K8N2 Neo4 Platinum will not boot - SOLVED!

I have just tried powering up my system based on an MS-7125 v1 and it will not boot.
Symptoms are :
1 long high pitched beep followed by two short ones, followed by two lower pitched tones of similar duration
D-Bracket - 1 = Red, 2 = Off, 3 & 4 = Green
No display on screen - I changed the graphics card to test that - no improvement
HELP!

Incidentally, I believe that the #2 LED on the D-Bracket may not be displaying red, so the D-Bracket may be trying to display 1 & 2 = Red, 3 & 4 = Green.

Will not boot up on 1st try

I am having a strange problem, My computer will not boot up on the 1st try after it has been shut off for 2 hrs or more. Here are my specs and then I will go into more detail. I like to use pictures because some of the terminology escapes my vocabulary.

Problem:
After being shut off for more than 2 hours my computer will not boot up on the 1st try. It goes to a message that says"Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key". I shut it down using the power button, wait for the hard drives to stop spinning, and then hit the power again and it starts up just fine. It will restart just fine also as many time as I want to restart it, after it has been running in windows. Once it is running, it runs terrific, no problems at all.
If you go right into the bios after sitting for a while you see this in the boot sequence, notice there is no hard drives(Nvidia Stripe)in the boot sequence.
After shutting it down and starting right back up this is what you see in the boot sequence. This pic is from a different time, thats why the boot sequence is different.
Here is a short youtube video (2:10 sec) made to help show the problem. (I called it a Cold boot Storage problem for another thread) just ignore that.
Things I have done to try to solve the problem:
1. Update the bios
2.I have moved the boot sequence around, Foppy1st, or CD 1st, ect. and even disabled the [USB:HP Photosm] in the boot sequence, Hard Drives are 1st now.
3.Replaced the Mobo Battery thinking that it was not remembering the boot sequence
4.Checked that the Hard Drives are connected to the correct plugs (6-7) on the motherboard, and that the raid connector JP1 was shorted out for Raid 0 and the blue indicator light was flashing.
* Just a note in this area. I did set up the Raid 0 with a tech from MSI because I was having an issue with the initial set up, and I did use the Nvidia raid drivers that came with the motherboard. Pchas01 in another thread thought that this could be part of the issue because it is not necessary to load the drivers when you set up the Motherboard in the Raid mode.
F10 and look in the Raid Array
5. Pulled the jumper off of JP1 and it just went to the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" screen much faster, but would never boot up after 5 tries. Put the jumper back in and started up on the 2nd try like the normal problem.
6.Went into the On-Chip ATA devices in the bios and Changed the Raid Mode to an IDE, I cannot F10 and get into the Raid Array now, but I guess that is normal.
Now this is what my boot sequence currently looks like.
That is the point that I am right now. It runs great, games are awesome on it. Its just does not want to start up on the 1st attempt.

I started with the easy fixes first, changed the sata cables, and tried different power supply connectors. Both tests had same results, still boots up on 2nd try. I did not know how soon the problem would re-occur after it has been shut down, my shortest time so far is 25 minutes.

Well right now, it is not even set up that way, in my #6 problem solving, it was suggested that I turn the Raid Mode off and try [IDE] to see if that made a difference,"because I don't need Raid enabled for the hardware raid". It did not, it only booted to the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" window about 60 seconds faster. It is currently set up in this way.

I am still working on getting the seagate diagnostics to work, I am getting an error message before I can even test them.
I do have another question. Why is my HP Printer showing up in the Hard drive test, and also why is it showing up in my boot sequence, is this normal?

X79A-GD65 (8D) will not boot with 4930K or 3930K

My system will not boot but gets stuck at "09 Power on South Bridge Initialization"
Detailed description:
I just bought this system and am when I tried to start it it got stuck at "09 Power on South Bridge Initialization". I have removed everything that is not necessary (gfx-card, HDDs, etc.) and only have the CPU and one memory stick inserted (in slot 1 as per the manual). I have also unplugged and put back all power cables from the PSU several times. I have also tried using BIOS A and B.
As I read on this forum that a BIOS update was needed for IVY-Bridge CPUs I bought a 3930K today to see if I could get the system up and running but it still gives me the same error code.
My board serial number is 601-7760-010B1312109204, assuming it is manufactured 1312 = December 2013.
I don't know the BIOS revision as I have never managed to get past the 09 status code.
Any ideas on what the problem could be?
Bought this monster PC as I have a delivery for a client in need of some RAM-heavy processing, so am really starting to feel stressed out about this by now.

- INTEL 530 80GB SATA SSD MLC RESELLER KIT

- KINGSTON 64GB 1600MHZ DDR3 ECC REG CL11 DIMM (4X16GB) W/TS (two kits, 128GB in total, don't really need ECC but that's what I could find needing 16GB sticks)

even compared to just 10 years ago sales staff have became really dumb as there just hiring people who do not care about anything as long as they get there cut of a sale (usually all they know is basic Consumer parts they stock) and nearly non of them unless they specialize in that level of equipment will have 0 idea what they work with on a pro level part (ECC memory tends to be used on servers and Professional workstations so if they do not use that type of gear then they probably have no idea what ECC really is at all)!
also in that time some major things have happened especially with computer parts like the memory controller moved from the Chipset to the CPU same with the SATA controller , onboard GPU (thats now on the CPU and some have it some don't) and alot of other things and I guess that the people you dealed with had no idea the memory support has very little to do with the board (all the board can do is have BIOS Timing sets now and lists of parts it supports) and is now to do with the CPU alot more as it has the important stuff on it (there very close to a SOC (System On Chip) now)!
if you plan on building another computer remember to do some research yourself before you get a CPU as it is nearly the most important thing of all and they have different features tied to them and do not expect sales guys to have a idea unless there also a Technical support staff member too and work on computers that are of the same class your trying to make and have at least used the same level gear (usually if your doing something like that find a friend who is a computer nerd tell him what your trying to do and get him to help you choose all the parts)!

K7T Turbo2 MS-6330 Will not boot up

Can someone help, I have a K7T Turbo2 MS-6330, and it will not boot up, I know I have power to my MB, becasue when I plug it in, the lights on my DIMM chips light up, and my fan spins for about 1/2 second. I don't know what to check next. Any assistance would be appreciated.

First of all, write what hardware other than mobo you have: cpu, power supply, graphics, memory, etc.

K9NGM and BFG 3D fusion 7600GS will not boot

I have recently upgraded my computer with new motherboard memory, processor and graphics card, see below
K9NGM-L bios V3.1
AMD X2 4200+
1Gb Geil DDR2 667 Mhz
BFG 3D Fusion 7600GS PCI-E
Windows XP SP2
550W PSU
The problem I have is that this will run fine on the integrated 6100 graphics card however, if I install the graphics card the system will not boot, remove the card and everything is fine.
I have returned the graphics card to the supplier as faulty and it has been replaced but the problem still remains.
I have also contacted MSI tech support and have followed their suggestion of clearing the CMOS and loading the optimised defaults but no joy.
Does anyone have any suggestions ?

give us PSU details. (can be found into PSU sticker)
go into BIOS, "Load Optimized Defaults" config "Y" then "SAVE AND EXIT",
back to BIOS navigate to "PNP/PCI Configurations", setup "Primary Graphics Adapter" to PCI-Express.
navigate to "Advanced Chipset Features", setup "OnChip and PCIe VGA selection" to Auto. then "SAVE AND EXIT".
power down PC, remove power cord from PSU and install your external VGA use PCI-E x16 slot. attach/move monitor cable from onboard VGA to BFG and fireup PC.

KT3 Ultra (6380E) Will not boot

I have just changed the cooler on my Processor (AMD 1800+) as it was too loud for my new room, and since then it will not boot. The "D" bracket diag LEDS show 1 & 2 are RED and 3 & 4 green. Now, according to the diagnostic chart this means the IDE Ctrllr is being initialsed, however, these lights are on immediately as soon as the power is switched on !
I started by removing teh memory - no joy.
I then removed everything (i mean even the processor) from the board, except for the "D" bracket connector and the goddam thing will not boot, beep or do anything !!!
Replaced Processor and fan and the fan starts but no boot (LEDS show 1 & 2 are RED and 3 & 4 green)
Any ideas as I cannot afford buy a new MOBO only to find its the Processor !!

I have owned a KT 3 Ultra since early in 2001. While it's been a decent board it never lived up to it's MSI specs as it could not run at 333 fsb. That said, I can tell you that it's always been tempermental. I take it apart to tinker with something and then it doesn't want to boot. I tinker with a few connections that are seemingly fine and it fires up. I'd remount the CPU and hsf, put in the RAM and video card and try it. You should at least be able to boot to the bios even without a hard drive. The d-link is worthless. It rarely tells you anything about where the problem is, as in this case the IDE controller is not the likely culprit. My guess is that it just being difficult and it will fire up for you. If this board died easily I'd have kiiled mine years ago. Some tender words of endearment may help.(lol) Good luck.
