MSI GT70 0NC - upgrade from i5-3230M to i7-3610QM?

Hi Guys,
Can You upgrade MSI GT70 0NC from i5-3230M to i7-3610QM? Has anyone of You tried that? How does laptop perform after such change? Is it stable?
i5 is unfortunately not performing well, when I try to play with virtualisation, so I'm looking if I can simply get more powerfull i7 onboard. Then I'll add 16 GB of Kingston RAM + SSD drive, and it should perform well... I hope.

  • MSI GT70 0NC 494 - Samsung 840 Evo Problem

I recently brought a Samsung 840 Evo 500GB to replace the WD Black HDD on my MSI GT70-0NC-494 laptop. OS is Windows 8. Im going type out pretty much how I ended up to where I am right now in hopes that maybe someone could catch where I went wrong.
    So here's the story:
The cloning process went smoothly and I was able to load the OS from the SSD without any problems. Then I immediately updated the firmware and I set the optimizations using the Magician software.
I ran CrystalDiskMark and had speeds around ~300MB for both read and writes on the sequential test. Thought that my speeds were kind of slow when comparing them to the others I've seen. AHCI is on. I know my laptop has a SATA 2 and SATA 3 slot but I did plug the SSD in the SATA 3. SATA 3 connection is confirmed through Intel RST application and Samsung Magician. The speed is just not around the ballpark of what everyone is getting.
Ok, let's see the speeds with Rapid Mode so I turned on Rapid Mode and restarted. Then I get a "Start PXE over IPv6/4" message which then leads to the BIOS screen. Turn off laptop, turn it on, and get the same message. Turn off laptop again, turn it on, and the OS loads this time.
I thought that was weird but whatever I got to the OS, I thought. Open up Task Manager to see how Rapid Mode affects my RAM capacity since my regular usage already puts me ~1.5GB below max. 1.9GB shows up on RAM. Thought I'd be starting closer to 3GB. Then again, Im not entirely sure on how Rapid Mode works so whatever. Run the benchmark test through Magician software.
(This pic was from after I reinstalled Win 8 but the performance drop was similar)
Ok, , the read speeds is now garbage. Did the test on CrystalDiskMark and it shows similar results. It was late at night and Im feeling tired so I keep my laptop idle overnight to see if that would help. Nope, read speeds are still garbage. Surprisingly enough, CrystalDiskMark would show write speeds for sequential hitting ~1000MB/s so it seems that the write process is somewhat fine. The read process seems like it's broken.
So I turn off Rapid Mode and see if that fixes my read speeds. Restart. Get BSOD on startup. Turned laptop on and off multiple times to see if anything works but no avail. Thankfully I created a set of recovery disks 2 days ago so I immediately run that now. I was planning to restore the OS to factory install anyways so its fine.
OS is restored. At this point Im scared of installing the Samsung Magician software so I make a restore point. This time I want to see what happens if I install the software and run Rapid Mode through Win 8.1.
Seems like I can't just upgrade to 8.1 without installing a bunch of updates first so I do that. I got impatient so I went ahead and installed Magician and did the optimizations. CrystalDiskMark showed ~300MB/s for read and ~400MB/s for write. Ran the Magician benchmark and it produced the light blue bars on the screenshot above.
Let's try Rapid Mode now. Turn Rapid Mode on, restart, and I am again greeted with the "Start PXE over IPv6/4" message before hitting the BIOS. Now Im telling myself that I messed up again. Turned off the laptop and turned it on. OS is back. Awesome, only 1 try.
Did benchmarks on Magician which again showed that my read speeds were garbage (dark blue bars). I'm not even going to touch Rapid Mode for fear of having to reinstall the OS again. So now Im trying to upgrade to Win 8.1 and see if that fixes something.
Download 8.1, restart, I get some BSOD message with the code "0xC1900101 - 0X20017", restart through BIOS, and I get an error saying that 8.1 failed and Im being reverted to 8. Desktop loads up, I check Magician and my 840 Evo doesnt even appear on the drop down list. The software even says Rapid Mode is disabled even though I can see the Rapid Mode service through task manager.
Now Im just running tests, and restarting the laptop to install additional Windows updates. Upgrade to Windows 8.1 actually went through this time. After the update, Magician now says that Rapid Mode is on and my SSD again appears to be selectable. Read speeds seems to have gotten a *tiny bit* better but it is still extremely low.
Decided to say screw it, disabled Rapid Mode, restarted, again with the "Start PXE over IPv6/4". Turn off laptop, turn on, surprisingly no BSOD saying my system is forever broken. Now Im trying to see if I could salvage the performance back through messing with the settings so I followed most of the advice on another website.
Now it seems that the write speed is consistently good, but again the read speeds are absolutely horrid. I used AS-SSD for the benchmark instead of CrystalDiskMark this time.
And that is where I am right now. I am very sorry that the post is ridiculously long. I've been constantly looking around the internets to see if anyone has the same problem as me and I couldnt find a solution. I wanted to somewhat be detailed with my process so I can know whether this problem is the software or the MSI hardware. Or if the problem is with my specific SSD and that I'd have to RMA it.

How did you go about installing Windows?
It looks like the first time you used some software that ended up cloning it from the HDD to the SSD. That's a no-no in general, and I'd never trust it to work well.
Then the next time, you say you restored it. But you don't say if that was from the SSD/HDD or from recovery media that you had generated.
I'll be perfectly honest, I'd only trust installing from Recovery media when it comes to installing a new drive.
I'd say to do that. Install from Recovery media and see if that fixes the problem.
I will also say that a number of users have had issues with the Samsung 840 drives. Most of them were using the Samsung 840 Pro drives, not the EVO's, but just something to keep in mind. They were only able to get them to operate at SATA2 speeds.

  • MSI Gt70-0NC GPU Dead??

I bought a MSI GT70-0NC last week and reinstalled Windows 7 immediately.
I got a GTX 675M 2GB Graphics Card in it and i cant start any Game with it. Neither i can install any drivers.
The first Problem is, that the Graphics Card puts out an error 43 in System-Manager.

I downloaded the latest VGA-Bios for MSI-Cards on Techpowerup.com and flashed it with nvflash:
and still got the same Problems.
I tried the Inf Modding for the Actual Graphics driver and the original Driver on the MSI-Homepage.
        Still no Luck
Is there any other MSi Rom i need???
Is it even possible to get the Graphics card to work?

i can get a GTX260m very cheap from a friend. Is there any possibillity to get this card working in the GT70??
The next best card for your laptop is going to be the 680m, it is quite a bit more powerful than the 675m and would actually be a pretty decent upgrade (the 675m wasn't that great to begin with).  You should be able to get a 680m working from ebay, try and buy an MSI one, a Dell/Alienware one can still work but it you're more likely to run into problems, you'd also have to flash the MSI vbios.
    Good luck

Even buying the same brand the sticks wouldn't be identical. A stick of the same model but different batch can even use totally different chips. Only a matched kit ensures those are the same. Either you buy a kit to replace the stick or add any quality 8GB DDR3-1600 stick. If you want to buy the same brand to increase chances open the notebook and check the stick installed. You will have to open it anyway if you want to upgrade.  Also nobody can give you a definitive answer as MSI will use the ram they had in stock/got a good price for when the notebook was about to be manufacturered (so could be diffferent on different GT70s).

A 2.5" SSD will replace the HDD and all 2.5" drives will fit. Along with the HDD you can install an MSATA SSD.

Since you are using Windows 8, then go for 1504

  • MSI GT70 0NC Throttling

    Hello,
I originally posted in the thread linked below but I though I'd post here as well. The original thread contains suggestions from other users as well as further information on what I've tried.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=183574.0
    I have an MSI GT70 0NC.
While gaming, my FPS will drop, for example, from 60 to 30 FPS (when turning a game character around to view something else for example) or overall FPS seems low when comparing my specs to a games system requirements.
My laptop is also always plugged in, Turbo Boost is on and the fan button is on forcing the laptop fan to run at full blast while gaming.
    Temperatures also seem fine.
I'm not sure if this is graphics card related or CPU related but it's pointing to GPU since one user observed that my card doesn't seem to be running up to it's specs.
    I've tried the following:
-Reformatting and re-installing Windows and drivers
    -Scanning for viruses
-Ensure up to date graphics drivers
-Setting Power Options to High Performance in Windows
-Setting my Nvidia graphics card as the default card used by my computer/specific games in the Nvidia Control Panel
-Set Prefer maximum performance under Power management mode in the Nvidia Control Panel
    -Flashing BIOS with different versions
Any suggestions or input would be appreciated.
    Thank you,

I have disabled both V-Sync in the Nvidia Control Panel and in-game and the issue persists.
Sorry for not making myself clear, I'm just saying that the 60/30 FPS is caused by the V-Sync.
According to the Afterburner log files, there is no throttling on your GT70 0NC, so I'm not sure what's the issue you have now.

overall FPS seems low when comparing my specs to a games system requirements.
If you're talking about the FPS score, I'd suggest to download the 3DMark 11 and run the P-score. The result will show you if there is a problem of the graphics or not.
It would be necessary to know the graphics driver version you're using.
    :cool:Cheers!

Ok. Now i used the program and did everything 2 times. When it comes to the end in the program, It says that i already have the files or the "new" bios updates. I restarted the computer and took out the batterie and everything but its still the same thing. When i try to boot from the USB stick its just a black screen, And when i read the log file it says that i have the old Bios update.
So to make it short. I cant update it. It says that the files are the same but when i look they have diffrent name's. One of them have ---->

    Hello,
What is the book key (F) in MSI GT70 to boot from CD/DVD? I tried all F keys but nothing.

Change to legacy mode and reboot again to see if your CD/DVD is in the list of boot menu. Any drive not in the list is usually not bootable under current boot mode. You just need to choose the correct boot mode and make sure your CD/DVD is not broken or scratched.

  • MSI GT70 0NC harddisk upgrade

    Hi,
I have the GT70 0NC with 1 750GB HDD, and I kinda regret not taking the SSD one. I want to add in a Samsung 840 PRO SSD but I have no experience with adding in HDD in notebooks.
1.) Does it fit? (I assume it does as some models have a SSD)
2.) What's the best way to get a fresh windows on the SSD? Should I use the recovery function for this?
3.) Do I need anything else other than the SSD? Cables for example?

    Ok.....Since I don't know much about that EXACT model of the GT70, I can't say 100% what you need....BUT....
    I have a GT70 as well.
First, open up the bottom of the notebook (approximately 10 screws, I can't remember the exact number offhand). Don't worry about the warranty label, as long as you don't mess anything up, it doesn't matter.
Once you have it open, there should be 2 places to install hard drives. With the laptop upside, and the front facing you, there should be a place in the rear left of the notebook, and a space in the front right of the notebook for hard drives. More than likely, the single hard drive you have is installed in the rear left. If it is, GREAT. If it's not, that's fine as well, as long as the rear left has the connections for another hard drive. IF IT DOES NOT, you will need to order a few parts. Not a big deal, and only costs roughly $40. See my thread here: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=163698.0
Now, once you know you have the space and connections for it, it's very easy and simple to install. I really shouldn't have to explain that. Any 2.5" hard drives should fit into the notebook.
The only things you MIGHT need, are the parts I referenced in the post above, if they aren't already in your notebook.
What you WANT to do, is the following:
    1. Install the SSD in the rear left spot in the notebook.
    2. Install the HDD in the front right spot in the notebook.
The reason being, is the rear left is SATA3 ports (6Gbps) while the front right is SATA2 (3Gbps). This allows your SSD the maximum amount of a bandwidth for usage.
I would then, at this point, make sure they show up in the bios. If they do, I would go ahead and use the install DVD's (that you hopefully made) to reinstall Windows on the SSD. At that point, you should be able to handle the rest.

If your laptop came with Windows 7 then you should install Windows 7 BIOS only. However if you want all keys work then install Firmware for Windows 8.
    Again, James, you are wrong.
Re-read your sentence again (if you can understand your own sentences).....
They do NOT need to install the Firmware (or EC firmware) in order for it to work in Windows 8. They need to stay with the Windows 7 EC firmware that originally came installed on their laptop. SCM and everything else work just fine under Windows 8 (and 8.1.....if it works at all) using the EC firmware for Windows 7. How do I know this? I have a Windows 7 based GT70 with everything working fine in Windows 8. Not only this, but it's been said over and over and over. Apparently still hasn't sunk in yet though for some people.
Its ok, these things can get very confusing for some people.
