MSI GT70 ONC-008US - Won't boot properly

For whatever reason, my laptop refuses to boot properly now. For awhile it just had a problem booting from sleep (no image on screen, seemingly working otherwise), so I avoided doing that. It also did this when trying to power on the laptop, but this problem was fixed ignored by simply holding the button and trying again.
It now it wont boot, despite the number of times I might try to make it. Nothing appears on the screen at all, sometimes my keyboard back-lights come on but now not even that happens. I don't know what to do. The hard drive (I think it's the hard drive?) makes a sort of clanking sounds a couple times and then goes quiet, occasionally making small beaps. USB devices power up per usual.
If you know what might be happening I'd be eternally grateful. My only guess is that the hard drive is failing, but wouldn't the screen still show something if it was simply the hard drive failing?
##UPDATE:## After trying a million times it finally booted. I still want to figure out what is going on. Please help

I've contacted at least three computer repair shops in my local area and all seem to think it's the motherboard. FML
It sucks. But it should still be under warranty from MSI. I would contact them to be perfectly honest.

  • Mac won't boot properly unless in safe mode

Recently I updated my MacBook Pro to OS  X Yosemite. I then started the process of the data encryption.
I don't know what happened, but maybe the encryption failed, because now every time I turn my mac on, it won't boot properly unless it's in safe mode.
Either it will have a black screen with a visible cursor, or just the desktop with no dock or the bar along the top and no icons, or it does boot up properly, but works extremely slowly. Like if I was to press the apple symbol on the top-right of the screen, it would take 5 minutes to actually open it. Nothing works properly.
And so I opened up my system preferences, and discovered that the Encryption is stuck on half-finished. But I can't stop it. If I try to turn encryption off it says I have to wait till it's finished. But it never does, the progress bar never moves.
If I open System Preferences while in Safe Mode, the progress bar for Encryption is grey, and underneath it says "connect to power to continue encryption". But it IS connected to power.
Have I stuffed my Mac? Is there a way to get it working again?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • My Sleek won't boot properly! Stuck on Recovery/Rescue m

Each time I boot my Zen Sleek it either goes to the rescue mode or it just locks up on the Creative logo. I've had it for a few months and this is the first time it seriously locked up on me. I hard reset it on the bottom and it's still the same. I tried to run Disk Cleanup through the rescue mode and it doesn't even run it!! I don't know what's going on... Yesterday it was playing like a beauty.

    Hi,
Could I please request you to provide bios version with all options unlocked and configurable for MSI GT70 ONC-016UK laptop. The bios version I am running is the latest E1762IMS.30P ( For Windows 7 64bit with RAID )?
Is that possible and if yes could you please provide such bios version. I m specially interested in the enbling Intel VT-x, Hardware virtulization and trusted executions options of bios as I can't see them in y bios and really want to change them.
    Thanks in advance.

Both are already Enabled in the BIOS version that you using.
But as far i can understand you need to disable the trusted executions

  • MSI P965 Platinum, system won't boot only when ICH8R is in RAID

So I couldn't get my system to boot properly when I have the ICH8R in RAID 1 mode.
I have the boot drive on a single, non-raid Wester Digital 250gb Cavair HD on the ICH8R.
Installed XP Pro SP2 with the ICH8R in IDE mode.  I installed in IDE mode beceause I was unable to install XP on my single drive when ICH8R was in RAID mode.  I installed XP in IDE mode, did all driver updates, then put the ICH8R into RAID 1 mode for my other data drives and the system will post, start to boot and get to the Windows XP boot screen then the system just restarts before the boot completes.  It does it in normal boot mode and safe mode as well.
With the ICH8R in IDE mode everything boots/runs fine.
The problem is, I need the 6 SATA RAID controllers on the ICH8R as I have 3 RAID1 arrays.
I've done all the updates to windows, motherboard bios, Highpoint RocketRaid bios update, tried every mode on the ICH8R, unplugged the Highpoint Rocket Raid, left it plugged in with no drives plugged in, disabled the Jmicron controller, everything I can think of.
    Any help would be appreciated.
I did not do the windows floppy driver install for the ICH8R when I installed XP, but I have not had to do that in the past with the ICH7 on my old motherboard so I assumed I wouldn't here as I've been told it's just if you are installing windows on a RAID.
    System:
    MSI P965  Platinum
Intel Core 2 Duo 6400 CPU
    (4) 1gb OCZ Gamer Extreme DDR2 PC6400 RAM
    Windows XP SP2
High Point Rocket RAID 2300 PCI Express x1 RAID card
Asus nVIDIA GS7300 PCI Express Video card
    Drives on ICH8R Controller:
Boot Drive: WD Cavair 250gb SATA2
DVD: Some sony 16x DVD - SATA
RAID1: (2) Seagate Barracuda 320gb SATA2 HD's (setup on previous motherboard on Intel ICH7 Controller)
    (2) Seagate Barracuda 500gb SATA2 HD's
High Point Rocket RAID 2300 Controller:
    (2) Seagate Barracuda 500gb SATA2 HD's

The problem that you are having has nothing to do with your mainboard.
Once you decide to install Windows XP SP2 when the ICH8R controller is in IDE mode, Windows will give you a bluescreen once you switch to RAID mode after the installation is done because it is to stupid to change to the proper driver.  Consider this as normal behaviour.
    You have basically three possibilities:
    1. Reinstall XP with integrated SP2 and integrate the Intel ICH8R RAID drivers using a floppy disk
The latest drivers can be found here.
As I understand, you have already tried that.  I if you don't feel like trying this again, have a look at this:
    2. Slipstream Intel ICH8R SATA RAID drivers using NLITE or XP ISO BUILDER and try to install again with a self-made install CD that already includes the proper drivers (no floppy needed)
Use google to find one of the tools I mentioned.  The procedure is free, perfectly legal and easy to do.  Guides for this can be found all over the internet
    3. Switching to RAID mode without having to re-install Windows XP
If you are still using your existing installation, that was done when the controller was in IDE mode, the follwing trick may work for you.
I posted a little guide on how to switch from IDE to AHCI mode without having to re-install XP.  Have a look at the guide.  The procedure is essentially the same for RAID.  The only difference is the content of the REG-File that you have to make.
Guide: HOW TO switch from IDE to AHCI mode without having to reinstall Win XP (GUIDE)
Use the following content for the REG file instead of the one I put up in the above thread:
    Quote
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    "Count"=dword:00000001
    "NextInstance"=dword:00000001
The procedure works perfectly well in most cases (but not always).
I hope one of these three "methods" will work for you.

  • MSI GT70 (0NE-452) Refuses to Boot/random shut downs - BIOS problem?

    Hello,
I recently purchased a MSI GT70 0NE-452 laptop from Xotic PC. It came with Windows 8, but since Windows 8 broke most of Adobe Premiere, Vegas, and After Effects, I wiped the RAID0 SSDs and installed Windows 7. I've reinstalled all the drivers and have been comfortably setup for about a week or 2. Unfortunately now, the laptop has been behaving strangely.
    1) Random shutdowns, regardless of whether I'm connected to power or not. And I know it isn't because the battery died. (This might be fixed now since I downloaded another driver for the CPU Thermal  Control)
    2) Laptop won't turn on first-try. I press the power button and the power button flashes orange but nothing happens. It will only turn on once I've removed the battery and put it back in.
I have a feeling this could be a BIOS problem, and possibly attributable to the Windows 7 reformat, but I'm not sure. My BIOS is currently: American Megatrends Inc E1762MS.50U, 11/23/12.
The MSI website for my model has a Bios update:
    Release Date: 2012-12-14
Description: Fix HDMI/DP hot plug no function after S3 resume
    Non-Win8
    E1762IMS.30R
Can someone please advise? Should I try my hand at flashing the BIOS with this update and hope it solves the problem, or should I just call MSI and get it fixed by them?
Any help is much appreciated, thank you very much!

I'll take your advice but can you clarify a bit? Is it something beyond a BIOS repair?

  • MSI GT70 ONC support please

My GT70 ONC with Windows 7 has several issues that I am asking for help with.
    1. The MSI Live Update 6.1 downloads updates but the installer fails to install them.
    2. The Turbo button stopped working months ago. I tried several solutions to no avail. I miss it.
    3. KLM stopped working long ago. I followed the steps and links in the FAQ to no avail: ( sorry I'm not allowed to post external links I guess).
    4. S-Bar stopped working. I followed the steps in an old FAQ here but the downloads for the ONC are not available. I searched for drivers on external websites but I'm hesitant to register and give them my email as I'm not sure if they're trustworthy.
    5. Would any of the other GT70 drivers on the download support page work for the ONC (i.e. GT70 2OC)?
Has the rapid increase in gaming requirements left me in the dust?  Am I correct that my GTX 670M does not have enough memory to play many newer games (not enough ram)?
I use the Intel Driver Update Utility and the GE Force Experience to attempt to keep my drivers up to date - can't seem to update the RealTek HD Audio with the MSI tool as well.
Many thanks in advance as I'm obviously not an IT person just and old guy that struggles quite a bit and Googles a lot.

Firstly, MSI Live update doesn't support MSI notebook, so don't use it to install drivers or you'll have many unexpected problems.
Try to re-install the OS and install the drivers from MSI website and then check the problem again.
Here is the driver download page for your model:
    Win7 64bits: http://www.msi.com/support/nb/GT70_0NC.html#down-driver&Win7 64
*Don't use any third-party programs to update your drivers, you may have some unknown issues by using them.
(I've met many users on the forum suffering issues because of using the wrong way of updating drivers.)
About the graphics driver, the latest generic driver from NVIDIA isn't always better, sometimes the latest driver has some issues which the older one runs more stable. In my opinion, as long as the system is running stable, I won't be  encouraging an update of the latest generic driver.
Lastly, sometimes people meet some issues caused by GFE and due to the reason that it's harder to diagnose, so they prefer not having it installed and choose to manually update driver from the MSI website or NVIDIA website.

  • GT70-2PC Dominator - Won't boot after restore

Today I performed a factory restore using the DVDs I burned when I first got this laptop (I had deleted the recovery partition).
Everything went fine, however now the laptop won't boot.
I don't see the drives in the bios unless I disable UEFI.
If I switch to legacy mode, the drives appear but don't boot.
I booted up off a "Mini Tool Partition Wizard" cd and the file structure looks like I would expect.
Even the recovery partition is back though F3 doesn't work.
I am running an unlocked bios, other than that, I'm stock.
Any ideas before I give up and go buy a W8 license to do a clean install??

Svet was just saying that if you deleted the recovery partitions, doing a 'factory restore' from the F3 boot option will not work.
You mentioned you used the Recovery DVD's that you created, correct? Those would not have the same issue.
You shouldn't NEED to buy a Win8 license to do a clean install, you already own one with the laptop. You can use a Windows 8 disc (that is the SAME version...ie if it's Home Premium you need a home premium disc to install it....) and install it that way.
Failing that, I would give the recovery discs another try and see if they can fix it. Once more, before you try the clean install method.

  • Toshiba A350 sometimes won't boot properly

I notice there are number of problems similar to this but no one has a fix.
    Problem:
    1) *Sometimes* when I boot my laptop the power light comes on but the screen stays black. Doesn't go any further.
    2) *Sometimes* when I boot my laptop it boots to the Windows start up screen but with thin rainbow coloured lines on the screen (occasionally you can make out the background Windows start up screen). Doesn't go any further.
    3) Most of the time it boots and it works perfectly. No crashes or screen problems.
After holding the power button down for a few seconds during 1) and 2) to "shut down" after a few attempts booting it will boot properly.
So far I've flashed the BIOS to the latest version and changed Processor Power Management to 100% under power options (advice from a link on Google). Neither have helped.
Any ideas on this problem? It seems quite specific to start up as it works well otherwise. Very annoying having to try multiple times to boot.
    Specifications:
Toshiba A350 (approx. 1 year old, out of warranty)
Windows 7 Pro x64 (upgrade from Vista)
    Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 2.13Ghz
    4GB DDR2
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 (512MB discrete video memory)
    Thanks.

I have exactly the same problem
    (Problem:
*Sometimes* when I boot my laptop the power light comes on but the screen stays black. Doesn't go any further.)
My laptop only doesn't start on battery only. The power light comes on and the stays on with the laptop in a freeze (nothing displayed on screen). The only way to get this light off is to remove battery.
Starts EVERY time with the AC power connected (with or without battery).
    Works perfectly normal once booted
SOMETIMES starts with the battery only if I boot soon after I have already been using the laptop
I have tried the static release processes but doesn't work.
After having this trouble I updated to latest BIOS but has not helped
Tried a different battery and has not helped
    Is a Toshiba Satellite PRO L500 T4400 4GB 15" Win7 Laptop - only 3 weeks or so old
    Very annoying!
    Please someone with an answer??

first suspect is the BIOS on the board! for that CPU it needs at least Version B1 (11.1) for a Richland CPU to be supported...
if you do not know what BIOS version your board has tell us the Serial Number of the board so we can tell you if thats the issue or not? (that is on the UPC label on the box it came in or on a sticker on the rear of the motherboard!)

  • MSI GT70 0NC-008US BIOS + FW

    Hello,
I've just received my GT70 0NC-008US. It comes with Win 7 pre-installed, but I am going to use Win 8 x64 instead. Before I do, I want to update BIOS and FW to the latest version for my model.
    Should I use 50T (Win 8) or 10P (Win 7) BIOS?
    Should I use 1504 (Win 8) 1414 (Win ?) FW?
    Thank you.

I'm sorry, but I still don't understand you. There are no 1.xx or 3.xx BIOSes nor FWes listed under GT70 0NC. If we leave Win 8 aside, should I just download 10P BIOS and 1414 FW?
Duno why you can't see them:
    http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GT70-0NC.html#/?div=BIOS
    30P & 10P are there

You can still install Win 8 from those regular BIOS and EC versions, corespond for your NB

  • Macbook won't boot properly.

Macbook won't boot. When turned on, it starts clicking; after a while, I get a gray screen with a blinking folder in the middle that has a question mark on it.  After a minute or two, it shuts off.

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
Or if you are running 10.7 Lion, boot from the recovery partition (Command +R on boot) and use Disk Utility to repair your OS 10.7 partition.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.
