MSI GT783-625US randomly hard boots

Equipment: MSI GT783-625US
Purchased: 2012/01/06
Let me start with the events of about 2 years ago, approximately 7-8 months after original purchase... While playing BF3, laptop powered down abruptly and completely. Thinking it was just a fluke, or maybe an overheating problem after playing too long, I hit the power button to boot and diagnose. It ran for a couple of minutes as I checked for good software to use to check temperatures, etc (low demand web browsing), then abruptly powered down again. This time the power button did nothing at all. Tried many iterations of troubleshooting, with and without battery, with and without AC adaptor, and it would occasionally boot for a few minutes. More often, pressing the power button would do nothing at all. After some difficulty reaching MSI, they finally got back to me based on a negative review I posted on a retailer (NewEgg, I think) and we went through the RMA process in which the laptop was repaired.
Now let's fast-forward to a few weeks ago when it randomly powered off while gaming again. This time it came back up and continued to run without any issue.
Fast-forwarding again to yesterday, powered off abruptly, though this time it immediately powered its self back on. It ran for a few minutes before doing the same thing. I started troubleshooting, removing unnecessary software and attempting to determine cause, while the intervals got shorter and shorter. Now it's caught in a death spiral of powering on, off within a few seconds (not nearly enough time to clear BIOS, let alone begin loading Windows), then on again, then off, then on. It's difficult to get it to stop because it literally doesn't stay on long enough to power it off again.
I haven't yet had the opportunity to go through the troubleshooting process with and without battery, with and without AC adaptor, etc... I wanted to start by searching similar complaints and reaching out to the community for potential guidance. It definitely doesn't seem like an isolated issue. It's disturbing and annoying that the same essential thing has happened to this same unit twice. I'm suspecting there's a systematic issue with the power supply on this specific model, which is made especially frustrating with the fact that this was a $2,500 unit new.
In any case, wanted to run this past you guys. I will probably troubleshoot a bit on my own, though this unit contains sensitive financial data and I am hesitant to send it anywhere for repair... If I can't make it work on my own, I am likely to remove hard drives and sell body for parts.
Any thoughts?

hmm either this could be temperature on cpu is high over 100 degress so laptop shuts itself down to prevent damage and when it is that hot it will remain off and pushing power button wont turn it back on so when it has coold down it will power on but then it will turn off once temperature kicks up to 100 so if this it open a program check cpu temp while laptop is just on and see if you can see cpu temp kicking up if it does that sounds like your thermal paste is worn out and needs to be re-placed with new thermal paste

  • MSI z77 mpower randomly relisting boot HDD order

I have the latest bios installed and for some reason the bios randomly decides to switch from booting from SATA 0 which is my SSD to booting from a drive that has an old bootloader on it that I am using for data.  This leads to no boot and makes the computer unusable by my wife.  All other settings seem to remain the same, just the HDD order sometimes does not.
2 of my data drives have old bootmanagers on them and the SSD goes to the last in the list when this glitch happens.  I'd rather not have to format these drives just to workaround a BIOS glitch.

Try doing a full cmos clear then adjusting the boot order in UEFI Bios.
Also, for good measure re-seat the power on the sdd and replace the sata cable.
On the additional drives, can't you just copy w/er data you need from one to the other than format or at minimum delete the old boot partitions?

  • MSI GT783 Odd Lag Issues

So I sent my laptop  back to MSI back in March with a random shutdown reboot issue(it was not blue screening) and I got it back late April and they replaced the 580M GPU with a 675M GPU(same thing with pretty new numbers as far as I have read) and a new Motherboard. So I've had it back and been using it since April 26th, give or take a day with no issues.
About 3 days ago, I began experiencing this odd form of lag with my computer, mainly in games sometimes when dragging windows across the screen. It's almost like the computer is "skipping" I have tried everything I could possibly think of, put older GFX drivers, scanned for viruses, changed all my settings to low in all my games, defraged, disk cleanup. I'm at a loss, CPU-ID and HWMonitor all show great temps, processor speeds are normal, GPU seems normal. Any ideas would be appreciated. As I am completely lost. I went from playing completely normal in the afternoon to this odd "skipping" within a few hours
Computer is MSI GT783-625us MS1761 Motherboard, Intel Core i7-2760QM 2.4mhz processor, Transcend 128GB SSD, and GTX 675M 2GB GPU

AC, I wish I could Game on battery lol & Idle temps are 36c-42c CPU & GPU is 37c-39c on load I max out at 71c GPU & 65c cpu with Crysis 2 on highest setting, cooling has always been a priority for me. Cpu wise everything seems normal, no speed drops of the like, I use CPU-ID, HWMonitor, GPU-Z, MSI Afterburner, and NVidia Inspector to monitor to make sure something was not throttling. The only thing that seemed odd was the GPU load not going up and my FPS kept fluctuating betweem 60(capped to monitor) and 43, and thats when this "skipping" type of lag would appear. I've removed new GFX drivers and put older drivers, I've scanned for viruses, ran an HD benchmark, nothing actually seems wrong until I open up a game. Oh, and sometimes I get a message from windows when I open games asking my to turn off aero and change to windows 7 classic desktop which makes ZERO sense considering I have an SSD, 12GB of RAM, and 2GB GFx Card. My windows experience scores are all 7.5, Memtest +86 shows no memory errors, So I'm stumped, Its barely been 3 weeks but I' considering formatting and seeing how that goes. Not sure what else to try.

  • 785GTM-E45 MOBO BIOS V 8.80 RANDOMLY RESETS BOOT SEQUENCE

    785GTM-E45 MOBO W/ PHENOM 9750 QUAD CORE CPU/4 GB WINTEC DDR2 PC6400 (2 x 2 GB) / WINDOWS XP SP3
PROBLEM:  BIOS V 8.80 RANDOMLY RESETS BOOT SEQUENCE
I HAVE 4 HARD DRIVES (2 SATA II - 1 USB 2.0 1 USB 3.0) ALL OF WHICH HAVE MULTIPLE PARTITIONS WITH 1 ACTIVE ON EACH DRIVE
    SATA II DRIVES / DEVICES:
ON SATA 1: HITACHI 1TB SATA II DRIVE
ON SATA 2: MSI DVD-CW RW
ON SATA 3: MAXTOR 320GB SATA II DRIVE
    USB DRIVES:
    1. SEAGATE FREE AGENT EXTERNAL USB 2.0 1TB HD
    2. FANTOM EXTERNAL USB 3.0 2TB HD (VIA DIABLOTEK USB 3.0 PCI-E CARD)
EXPLANATION OF PROBLEM AND FIXES ATTEMPTED TO DATE
IN BIOS BOOT SEQUENCE I SELECT THE HITACHI HD AS 1ST DEVICE AND ALSO SET IT 2ND 3RD AND 4TH AND BOOT OTHER DEVICE DISABLED.  SAVE/EXIT BIOS AND WHEN SYSTEM REBOOTS IT RANDOMLY SELECTS ANY OF THE 4 DRIVES TO BOOT FROM. WHEN I ENTER BIOS AGAIN IT SHOWS WHATEVER DRIVE IT HAD SELECTED TO BOOT FROM AS 1ST, 2ND, 3RD AND 4TH DEVICE. ENABLING OR DISABLING BOOT FROM OTHER DEVICE MAKES NO DIFFERENCE.
ORIGINALLY MY HITACHI WAS ON SATA 3 AND THE MAXTOR ON SATA 1 - I SWITCHED THESE AND NO DIFFERENCE.  BIOS SWITCHES BOOT DEVICE NOT ONLY TO THE MAXTOR SATA DRIVE BUT ALSO TO THE USB DRIVES. USUALLY WHEN I REENTER BIOS AND CHANGE THE BOOT SEQUENCE BACK FROM WHATEVER HD IT SHOWS TO THE HITACHI IT WILL USUALLY THEN BOOT FROM THE HITACHI SOMETIMES THOUGH IT TAKES 2 OR 3 TRIES TO GET IT TO BOOT FROM THE DRIVE I HAVE SELECTED AS 1ST BOOT DEVICE.
I HAVE TESTED ALL DRIVES EXTENSIVELY USING ONTRACK EASY RECOVERY PROFESSIONAL SOFTWARE AND ALL DRIVES SHOW NO PROBLEM.
MSI LIVE UPDATE 5 REPORTS THAT THE BIOS IS 8.80  HOWEVER IT ALSO SHOWS MY OS AS WINDOWS 2000 WHICH IS INCORRECT.  MY CURRENT OS IS WINDOWS XP SP3. MY XP INSTALLATION WAS AN UPGRADE FROM WINDOWS 2000.
PROBLEM IS NOT DEVASTATING JUST ANNOYING IF ANYONE KNOWS OF A FIX I'D LOVE TO HEAR ABOUT IT.  IF THIS IS A BUG IN THIS VERSION OF THE MOBO BIOS I SURE HOPE THEY EXTERMINATE IT AND RELEASE AN UPDATED VERSION IN THE NEAR FUTURE.

How do you know it's randomly booting a different drive?
What are the messages you get?
    As this:
That looks like a broken drive to me, where it can't find the bootsector/mbr in time to boot from, so the BIOS moves to the next drive and tries again.
I built this box about 2 months ago or so and this is the version of BIOS that came with the MOBO.  I have not flashed the bios in this board.
As for knowing that it is randomly booting from a different drive as I stated each of my 4 drives has at a minimum 1 active partition.  The Hitachi has a dual boot setup in Windows and if it is booting from the Hitachi drive I will get the Window giving me a choice of booting from either the Hitachi or the Seagate.  If I select the Hitachi I also have it setup for two hardware profiles so it then gives me that screen to select profile 1 or 2.  If I get these screens no problem - I select the Hitachi and profile 1 and it boots without any further problem.
If it has switched lets say to the maxtor (remember I have selected the Hitachi as 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th for boot sequence and the boot from other device is NO) I get no multi boot option it just automatically starts Windows from the active partition on the MAXTOR  (I can tell because the last time I used the Maxtor didn't shut down Windows properly so I get the option screen to boot normally or use safe mode etc).  The active partition on the Maxtor is a duplicate of the Hitachi but about 2 months old - basically a backup of the Hitachi active partition but out of date and without the multi boot option.
In addition if it has switched boot drives and I hit my reset button and del to open up bios again and go to the boot sequence menu it will no longer show my hitachi as all 4 choices but sometimes it will show all 4 drives in varying order (including the hitachi but not as first device), sometimes 1 drive in all 4  (as in the seagate or the maxtor or the fantom drive in all 4 of the boot sequences) this seems to occur randomly and each time the list of boot sequence is different.
Keeping in mind that I had initially selected the Hitachi drive in all 4 of the boot sequences and selected NO to boot from other device - If the Hitachi drive was not ready or had a bad bootsector/mbr should I not get a message similar to "cannot boot from selected device so and so is missing etc??  I was under the impression that when one disabled the boot from other device as in NO then the bios should not attempt to go any further then attempting to boot from the selected device(s)????
As for the broken drive and bios moving to the next drive and trying again I could understand that 1.  If I had not supposedly disabled its ability to do that  2.  I could perhaps understand this going to the next drive if I had selected the Seagate USB drive as my initial drive because of it's so called sleep mode which I have now turned off as it was causing errors in windows.  In addition I have run numerous and rigorous tests on the drives and they all passed with flying colors.
Yesterday after a couple of tries I booted from the Hitachi drive (it was listed as 1,2,3,and 4 in bios and the boot from other device was NO) and was using that all day and was on it when I posted my help request here.  Shortly thereafter I properly shut down my computer.  Now I would think that when I turned it on again this morning the BIOS would have maintained its previous settings of the Hitachi in all 4 of the boot sequences and the No on enabling it to boot from other device?  However when I booted up again this morning it tried to boot from the Maxtor (I can tell because I get the option screen to boot normally or use safe mode etc) so I hit the reset button and then entered bios and boot sequence and now it showed the Seagate as 1 (it had just tried to boot from the Maxtor when I hit the reset button), the Fantom as 2, the Maxtor as 3 and the Hitachi as 4 and boot from other device still said NO - changed them once again to show the Hitachi in all 4 positions and exited bios and it did then boot from the Hitachi and here I am writing this message using Windows XP located in the active partition of my Hitachi drive.
I'm not exactly a novice as my computer experience goes all the way back to mainframe days of the IBM 360 series computers.  I have built so many boxes I have lost count including numerous one using MSI mobos and I have never encountered a problem similar to this.  As I said it is not devastating just annoying - the only thing I can think of to totally eliminate the possibility of it being the mbr/bootsector of the Hitachi drive is to back up the drive and rewrite those sectors even though no errors have been reported.
I could be wrong but after messing with this for sometime it really seems to be a bios bug or perhaps just my bios is defective - I was able to dl a copy of v8.8 from another post in the forums - and have not used it yet.  Sent all of this info in a Tech support request and posted it here to see if there were any solutions I may have overlooked before flashing the bios with a dl copy of the same version I have installed.
As for downloading the current v of bios from the forums here it was apparently the only way I could get a copy as Liveupdate 5  shows that I have the current version installed and only gives me a message that my mobo bios is current and no download is needed or something like that and the MSI site no longer gives one the ability to download the mobo bios without using liveupdate 5 or at least I couldn't find one.  Guess they got tired of people killing their boards with bad flashes.

  • Random Slow Boot Ups

    Hi forum members,
I have been using Windows 7 64 Bit ultimate for almost 2-3 months. I have noticed this strange slow boot ups(randomly once in 3 or 4 days) during cold boot or restart. The system seems to hang up at the Windows 7 splash screen, but on the contrary its not hanged. The system is taking its own sweet time to boot up to the start up screen.
During a normal boot up my Razer Lycosa and Lachesis backlights would go off for few seconds and lights up as soon windows 7 start up screen appears. But during the random slow boots I have noticed that the backlight of Razer Lycosa stays on for 2-3 mins before Windows 7 start up screen appears. Another strange thing that I've noticed was the ticking sound on my Logitech Clearchat USB headset during the random slow boot. The ticking sound appears every 3 seconds during the slow boot. What could be the problem guys? Is it because of Hardware or corrupt system files. FYI, I have Razer Lachesis, Lycosa, HP 3500 Deskjet Printer and Logitech USB Headset connected to the USB ports. Logitech USB headset is connected to the USB port of Razer Lycosa.
I have recently flashed my MOBO to see if it was because of the BIOS, but the problem persists even after flashing.
Any suggestions members. I would really appreciate your help on this.
    My system specs,
    Intel Core i7 920 2.66
MSI X58 Pro SLI ( BIOS Version 8.A)
    Corsair DDR3 3 x 2GB DDR3 1333
    2 x 1 TB Seagate SATA II
    EVGA GeForce GTX 295
    Tagan 1100 W BZ Series
    Windows 7 64 Ult
    Regards
    Rahul

Thanks for the reply Henry. Well I am trying that but as I have mentioned in the POST the problem happens very randomly, like once in 4 days. Funny after posting this thread the system is running fine. I am determined to find the cause of this. I am planning to do couple of cycles of reboot today to determine if its the hardware issue(USB). What can be the other problems apart from the USB issues??

  • Split X2 after Win 8.1 upgrade shuts down after 5 minutes and has to be hard booted to start up

This has become extremely annoying. I upgraded to Win 8.1 after I bought the X2 just before Christmas. if I leave the X2 for just a few minutes, it will either go into sleep mode or just completely shut down (no way to know which it will do and how long it will take). In any event, it has to be "hard booted", in the sleep case, holding the on/off button down until it shuts off and then restarting, in the "just off" case, just pressing the on/off button to start it again.
In either case, tons of crap regarding all of the applications - Explorer, Word, Excel, Chrome, Outlook, that had to be shut down (unexpectedly).
I did not change the power scheme and it has been reset (probably more than once) to try and correct the problem.
Thanks for anyone that can help me solve this really annoying problem.

    Hi SSteveX2,
Welcome to the HP Forums! I can imagine that would be a frustrating with the random shutdowns. How long do you have it set before it goes to sleep? There are a couple of things to check. Start by running a System File Check to see if encounters any corrupt files. Another option is the using the HP Diagnostic Tools to see if it discovers any issues with your hardware. Run the System Test – Extensive Test.

  • Mavericks OS crashing having to hard boot

Running any app it seems to happen randomly. Click a function in the app you're using and the pinwheel starts, try to force quit then each app that is open crashes and system is locked. Need to hard boot with power button. Any fixes/work arounds for this? I've shutdown virus protection, and other tasks running in the background thinking it was a memory issue but no change.

  • K7N2 ILSR random re-booting

    Hi all
    Specs..
    K7N2 ILSR Delta
    AMD Athlon XP2800+
    512 mb Kingston Ram
    Nvidia Ge force FX 5700
    IDE:
    Master: Maxtor 160gb
    Slave: WD 80 gb
    Serial ATA: Maxtor 120gb
    Roms:
Master: Lite on DVD Dual layer writer
    Slave: Hitachi DVD rom
    550w Psu
    Windows XP pro
Problem.  Started out with a K6 mobo, all went well but after a week PC failed and I had to re-install Windows.  Then started getting random shutdowns, initially only when using DVD Shrink but then all of the time until Windows crashed out again!
Went through re-install and some diagnostics and eventually changed mobo for this one, K7N2.
Fresh install of Windows. (Had to phone Microsoft!!) Everything fine for two days and then......random re-boots, mainly on DVD Shrink.
Did following, Changed ram. Hard drive. Power supply up to 550w. Disconnected all drives except master.  Disconnected all drives. Re-installed windows to different drive as a test, same issue, possibly seems ok until i do all the updates and get the latest drivers in? Have tried ROM config's only 1 rom connected etc to isolate those.  Have changed all cables in case of tiny hidden cracked wire.
In other words, I have tried everthing i can think of, have basically re-built the thing and get same prob under different conditions, installations, even after 2 mobo's, only thing I didnt change yet is the chip.  My feeling is probably its a driver issue, have read the comments on the BIOS site and flashed to 7.7 so thats up to date. Am now going to re-format, re-install and run with basic drivers, see how that goes, then introduce drivers and see what makes it crash.  Will let you know how I get on if I doont throw the damn thing off of a bridge and take up Knitting instead. In the mean time if any of you can help.......PLEASE!!
PS  I Use dvd shrink as a test because it almost always causes a crash, but not always, and during the encryption process which I imagine is very processor hungry, writer doesnt cause crash as its not involved at crash stage.

:idea:ok this i what happen to me when i first install windows and like u geting update and my pc went nut more or les  :noidea:I didn,t inable the fire wall. In my case win xp so things keep going wrong if it wasn,t this it was that, still I didn,t know? so what I did was to disconmnect the internet and and once again start from scarch  format the drive I intsalled windows xp ( advaned)inable the firewall than updates and things r great, :rolleyes_anim:Give it a shot

  • Won't shutdown or restart unless hard boot - SMCFanControl Application

I have quite a bit of installed hardware so I thought SMCFanControl would be a good idea. However, it seems that I can reproduce a problem I'm having when utilizing the SMC app.
    Problem:
    1. Won't shutdown or restart unless a power boot is performed
    2. Many applications lock up and won't even force quit.
    3. Can't reboot locked apps after force quitting when I re-click in dock.
    Noticed:
I don't seem to have a problem unless I've at some point started ( or even after I've manually quit ) SMCFanControl. BTW I don't have it to start on login. But once I've used SMC after booting, no matter what, that is when the issues seem to begin. So I tried quitting prior to shutdown. Didn't work.
Question: Has anyone else experienced unexplained lock ups, non forceable quits on apps, no shutdown or startup without boot, whom also has SMCFanControl? Has anyone found a solution to this problem as I REALLY NEED some sort of cooling mechanism. Because without SMC, I'm running about 150 farrenheit and I can't get the room any colder without locking up myself!
P.S. I've tried resetting the PRAM or VRam or whatever Ram is reset when you power up, holding the power button in while then pushing Command, Alt, "R" at the same time until it does that long beep.
The only solution found so far is unnacceptable, which is leaving SMC turned off permanently.
    Thanks,

Well Bababooey if you're comparing yourself to a Apple Genius Bar then you should already know my answer, your snarky remark get a snarky reply.  Why would I go to a salesperson to fix my computer problem when I can go directly go to the source itself.  I used to sell Apple computers over 8 years ago and was apple certified before the Genius bar existed. If I am to go about fixing an issue I can't fix on my own I will go to the source itself meaning Apple's programmers and developers - being UI UX Developer myself I know they should have QA'd all platforms and troubleshooted any arising issues.
This was also the first time in the 20 years I've been using a Mac that I even attempted to go on this forum which i thought would put me in connection with a certified Apple representative.  This turned out to be a complete waste of time just being a public forum with no Apple employee involved.  I was hoping to find a quick fix but in turn I was only frustrated with stupid responses such as yours that were in no way an answer to my original question.
BTW I fixed the issue on my own and without your help or Apples help. I'm glad if all forums point here regarding this issue because I now have the answer. The answer I was looking for from someone earlier was as simple as this {Download Maverick and reinstall the platform - it will take an hour to do but afterward 10.9.2 was installed and my computer is now able to shutdown and restart without having to do a hard boot.}  No more software update bar at top and no problems with my drive which I told both you and Grant - I know my computer better than you and I've probably been using them longer than you.
So again Babowa you were so wrong...... and I am right.
Again anyone having the same problem, I suggest reinstalling Maverick and you'll be suprised 10.9.2 will work fine.

  • I phone zoom's to and i can't get it back without hard booting

Twice today my i phone zoomed and I couldn't get it back.  The first time I went to a Verizon store and she did a hard boot to get it back.  Tonight it happen again.  I did a hard boot (she showed me how) and I got it back.
The first time it happened I have no idea what I did.  Could have "double clicked" without knowing it.  Second time, I was putting the phone down and it happened again.
I'm wondering if there is a problem with the phone (I've had it about 2 wks)  or is there something else???
Also last week when I turned the phone on there was an icon on the first page missing.  It turned out to be the face time icon.  It's nowhere on my phone.  I have no idea how to get it back.

  • What is the procedure for a hard boot of my iPod touch 4th generation without itunes, and without computer, and without iPod data screen.?

What is the procedure for a hard boot of my iPod touch 4th generation
without iTunes, and without computer, and without iPod data screen?
6 months after purchase I updated my iPod touch as recommend by iTunes.
It has not worked since that day.  It frozen (disabled) with a "connect to
iTunes" icon displayed...that is the only thing it does.  itunes does not
recognize the iPod.  My Windows7 computer recognizes an Apple device.
Other computers recognize the devise but if iTunes resided on that
computer it did not recognize the iPod
I suffered a setback with deep depression and am just now getting out of it enough to do something.  The depression prohibited me from taking action.
I have done every procedure recommended from Apple help and external
sources.  I did this thoroughly with help for other owners and IT experts,
Apple employees etc etc.  I and associates have perform reboots utilizing a
number procedure using only button on the iPod.  These were unsuccessful
    also have performed.
Please do not ask me to do the usual.
Online I saw  a process using the buttons on the iPod to completely
    reformat
the iPod.  It was NOT the hold buttons for 10 sec let go of one wait 8 sec
etc.  I can not find the process now...a friend showed it to me in passing
I have lost contact with him.  This is the procedure, I believe, that with
enable me to update and use the iPod.

You need an internet connection and likely a computer with iTunes but an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with the FindMy iPhone App may work by:
If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod on the iPod in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone and use Remote Wipe to erase the contents of your device. If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode after the device has been erased.
You can also wipe the iOS device by installing the FindMyiPhone app on another iOS device and using that app to wipe the device.
    Otherwise
    Disabled
Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.
iOS: Forgot passcode or device disabled
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

    For how to restore:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    To restore from backup see:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.
Yo may have to go to an Apple store or a friend's house with an internet connection and iTunes.

  • Random hard freezing issues, Windows 8 64-bit on Macbook Pro (Late 2008)

    Hi,
I recently upgraded to OS X 10.8.3 and got a hold on copy of Windows 8 64-bit. As I'm running on my old trustworthy 15 inch Macbook Pro (Late 2008), my hardware is officially unsupported. Over the years I've had XP, Vista, Win7 32-bit and 64-bit running running on the same machine, and thought I'd give Win8 a chance.
To be able to install Win8 on my unsupported hardware, I tricked the Bootcamp assistant that I was going to install Win7, and after the reboot and start of the Win7 installation, I exited the installer, rebooted, switched DVD to Win8 and did the installation from there. So far so good. For installing the Bootcamp drivers, I followed the instructions in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4894920?tstart=90.
Now, the machine runs just fine with Windows 8, and I've installed some basic third party applications (Firefox, Spotify, Steam). However, I get completely random hard freezes on the machine (sound looping, no other activity whatsoever) during normal use. These can occur 20 minutes after start, or 3-4 hours in. The freezing behavior is very much similar to how my model can behave under overheating conditions (which mostly have occured in past Windows versions while gaming), however overheating doesn't seem to be the issue here (based on simple palpation ).
Have anyone experienced a similar problem, or know something about it? My current idea is that some weird things are going on with the Bootcamp drivers, so unless anyone comes up with a suggestion I might try doing a rollback to the point before I installed the drivers to see what I can make of it.
    Thanks!

Had a few similar short system freezes, after installing Windows 8 x64 on 13” MacBook Pro Mid-2010 with BootCamp 5.0.5033.
There is a suggestion that DisableDynamicTick may fix the problem: https://discussions.apple.com/message/21565295#21565295. There were similar topics at Microsoft forums: 1, 2, 3. It was said “that this will likely reduce system battery life, so it should be undone when you update your Windows build or if it doesn't resolve your issue”, and that “this problem is resolved in the release versions of Windows 8”.
Another possibility is that there is indeed a buggy driver, within BootCamp 5.0.5033, or a 3rd party, like a wireless network driver in the following case http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-performance/system-fr eeze-randomly-after-installing-windows-8/49488183-26cf-4389-af21-a85dc366c99a?pa ge=2#LastReply.
The problem has been noticeable on my MacBook, but not annoying enough yet to spend time troubleshooting. If you find a robust solution, using the links above or other method, it would be interesting to know.

  • HT4623 I used iTunes to update my 4s which is now frozen.  Picture shows the charger cord with an arrow to the iTunes logo.  Computer won't even recognize that my phone is plugged in.  I have tried the hard boot.  Nothing works...

Please help with my iPhone 4s.  I updated to OS 8 using iTunes.  It had an error and no my phone is frozen.  It shows the pic of the charger with an arrow pointing to the iTunes logo.  I have tried a hard boot.  I plug it into iTunes.  My computer won't even acknowledge it is plugged in.  Any tips???

Sounds like it is time to call Apple and make an appointment to take it in for them to examine it and find out what is wrong with it.

  • HT1557 10.9.2 update won't update on my imac 2010 at all, and now my computer won't shutdown or restart without a hard boot.  Did anyone have this same problem and figure out how to fix it?

So for the past few weeks I've been trying to update the 10.9.2 update on my imac (2010 - 21.5 inch) and when I attempt to try to update the software my screen goes grey with a Software Updater top bar the shows up on the top of the grey screen and then just quits doing anything (except the screen saver which works after nothing else happens - and that shows you how long I've been waiting for the grey screen to magically do something.  I've attempted downloading the software update then installing it but the same thing happens.  I don't think any of my 3rd party software is the cause of this and i'd rather not uninstall the programs since the update won't even do anything.  Utility is telling me nothing but the usual ARD element unable to be modified.
With the several failed attempts at installing this update (probably around 15x) my computer will not shutdown nor restart on command anymore.  The only way I can shut it down is holding the power button.
I used to have so much faith in Apple products and used to be a devoted user, but since Jobs passed away the direction of Apple has gone down the toilet.
