MSI GTX 460 HAWK Talon Attack beeps when is not on load.

Hello!
Yesterday I bought MSI GTX 460 HAWK Talon Attack together with FSP Group EVEREST 85PLUS 600W PSU.
I put it all in my old PC, powered on, but then after a while (when started to install latest MSI drivers for HAWK) my VGA started beeping periodically. These are short beeps in not fixed time interval.
The most interesting thing is that when I put my card on load, the beeping stops - it beeps only when I am in windows surfing internet etc.
I have searched through forums and didn't find a clear solution to this problem, but most likely it is a PSU issue.
MSI states, that card requires 24A on 12V for whole system (Core i7 ...).
My PSU is capable of the following:
Output Current:
 30.0A @ +3.3V DC
    30.0A @ +5V DC
    18.0A @ +12V1 DC
    18.0A @ +12V2 DC
    18.0A @ +12V3 DC
    18.0A @ +12V4 DC
    .8A @ -12V DC
    3.0A @ +5Vsb DC Standby
Complete configuration of my system is:
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 x2 6000+ (Will change soon)
MB: Asus M2N-E (Will change soon)
RAM: 2 x 2 GB DDR2 800 (Will change soon)
HDD: 2 SATA drives
DVD: 1 PATA drive
VGA: MSI GTX 460 HAWK Talon Attack
PSU: FSP Everest 85PLUS 600
Is there a problem with PSU or something else could be wrong?
Thank you in advance.

Hi all !
I also have the annoying beep problem.
A couple of weeks ago I purchased a GTX460 Talon Attack and as soon as I entered a game I got beeps coming from the card. Tried a 3DMark and Kombustor, same issue. The PC is build by me, had a JeanTech 700W PSU and a GTX260 which gave me no problems, ever. As soon as I replaced it with the 460, the beeping started.
I returned it to the supplier and i got it back two days ago with the following message:
"Graphics card passes all Tests with no issues, Tests Run: Crysis WarHead, Furmark, 3Dmark Vantage, AVP, Lost Planet 2, Stone Benchmark MSI Kombuster, Resident Evil Benchmark, ATI Mecha, ATI Ladybug, "
(Graphics card passes all Tests with no issues, Tests Run: Crysis WarHead, Furmark, 3Dmark Vantage, AVP, Lost Planet 2, Stone Benchmark MSI Kombuster, Resident Evil Benchmark, ATI Mecha, ATI Ladybug, Streetfighter Benchmark and heaven benchmark tool, these were all tested at 1920 x 1200 resolution running maximum settings, tested on DX9, DX10 and DX11 where applicable, there was no issues apparent. There was no bleeping coming from the card)
Regards,
Overclockers UK - Support"
So I bought a brand new Antec TruePower 650W as I thought maybe the PSU does not regulate the voltages properly. No luck, I am still getting beeps but it's very weird. In idle (browsing internet, watching a movie or listening to music) the card is completely silent and sits in 25-29 degrees. As soon as I enter World of Warcraft (for example) and the temperature rises, at 35-36 degrees, I get 4-5 beeps then it stays quiet and I can play normally. (1920x1200 highest settings)
When I get out of the game and the temp drops, again around 36-35 degrees I get 1-2 beeps and then it remains silent again. No artefacts, errors or freezes. (so far)
I have seen the round sticker "Warranty void if removed" on the back of the card but I haven't touched it.
I really don't know what to do with it at this point and it's a very annoying problem, I cannot play anything like this.
I don't want to RMA it again since it already cost me £30 (transport & testing) plus a brand new PSU. And I love the card, the construction, the looks and the fact that it runs so cold. I just want a "fix".
Any ideas please ?
My system:

Asus P6T SE X58
Corsair XMS3 3x2Gb DDR3, 1600MHz, 7-7-7-20, 1T
Zalman CNPS10X-Quiet
Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
Sorry for the wall of text and thanks in advance. I really hope someone has a solution or it's going to be an annoying Christmas. (I'm a technical PC engineer with a fixation for everything to go smooth)

  • MSI GTX 460 Hawk Talon Attack - no display, cannot get past POST

Just put this thing together. Windows 7 is not installed and the HDD is not formatted yet, but I cannot even make it to the BIOS. Dell monitor works on laptop and with PS3 with both the VGA and DVI port.
    Specs:
    MB: Gigabyte GA-X58A-3DR
    CPU: i7-960
    RAM: 4GB DDR3 Adata
    HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3
DVD: ASUS DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS Black SATA 24X DVD Burner - Bulk - OEM
    PSU: 900W Continuous Silver
I believe I'm hearing 2-3 beeps on startup, suggesting a no display or video card error. I've tried both PCI-Ex16 slots on the MB with no avail. Two red LEDs on the card itself are on, indicating that it is receiving power. All fans are running, discs will spin in the DVD drive, I'm pretty sure the HDD clicks once or twice on startup. Only thing wrong is that I have no display and I cannot navigate BIOS regardless of whether or not it has successfully loaded.
Tried clearing CMOS with button. Tried both VGA and DVI ports on monitor and card.
Question: Is my card DOA? Or did I miss a step? Or is something else wrong?

I have connected both power cables from the PSU that were labled "PCI-E" to the card. Also, two of the card's LEDs are on after starting up the machine.
I have also recently verified that the memory I have installed is compatible with the motherboard.
It's really frustrating because if I could see the POST error report I might have some idea of what to do

Hi all, I have the following problem with MSI gtx 460 Hawk graphics card, after being in load when returns to idle, the graphic card plate for several beeps, I already try changing the PCIe slots and psu connectors and still the same problem, the graphics card in game works well in 3dmark too and everything you throw, but always when return the load to idle makes a few beeps, any ideas? thanks in advance, best regards to all, Diego.-

RMA the VGA as Henry said
    Small Update:
    two things:
    First:
I noticed that the gpuz, report it when VGA is under load ( furmark )  the voltage  VDDC value the higher value is 0.96, is a low voltage ? 460gtx under load  must be near 1.02 ?
    Second:
My reseller told me that behind the card must have an sticker "void warranty if removed " over OCP protection but the card does not comes with that sticker is that possible ?

  • MSI GTX 460 Hawk hangs, need help

    Hello!
Need help with my MSI GTX 460 Hawk.
Sometimes it hangs and I need to restart my computer and sometimes screen goes black and then windows says that video driver wasn't responding and was recovered.
Computer hangs more often in the 3D game, but in not 3D programms computer hangs too, but no so often.
The temperature is ok, maximum is 70 deg. in 3D game. I even tried to set videocard cooller to 100% and it didn't help.
I did no overclocking or anything like this.
I use the latest videodriver from nvidia's website and the latest directx.
    Windows 7 64bit.
Can you help me to solve this problem?

If you are really in lack of parameters:
    Board: Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3LR
VGA:  MSI GeForce GTX 460 Twin Frozr II
    PSU: Raidmax 500W (22A on 12v rail)
    Intel Core 2 Duo 8500 3.16GHz LGA 775
    OS: Windows 7 64bit
The problem: Videocard began to hang:
Sometimes it hangs and I need to restart my computer, sometimes I get BSOD and sometimes screen goes black and then windows says that video driver wasn't responding and was recovered.
Computer hangs more often in the 3D game, but in not 3D programms computer hangs too, but no so often.
    What I've allready tried:
    1. Installed latest drivers from nvidia.com and latest directx.
    2. Checked temperature: maximum is 70 deg. in 3D game at 100% load. I even tried to set videocard cooller allways to 100% and it didn't help.
    3. Installed MSI Kombustor to burnin test videocard, but I can't catch any hangups with it.
    4. Checked windows system log. The last warning after driver recovery message is:
Video driver nvlddmkm wasn't responding and was recovered.
    5. Two latest BSODs were caused by dxgkrnl.sys and nvlddmkm.sys drivers.
    6. Finally installed MSI LiveUpdate, it shows that no videodriver is installed and wants to download an old videodriver ver.  258.96.
Need help to solve this problem.

MSI Kombustor is good for stress testing. It comes with Afterburner.

  • GTX 460 Hawk Talon

    Hey all.
I've got one of these boards, had it for a few years now and it's served me well. Problem is, not too long ago I noticed it was starting to overheat quite a bit, after taking a look I noted one of the fans in the Twin Frozr II setup has stopped working completely. The card still works but now I need to run all my games on the lowest settings to make sure it doesn't overheat too much.
Returning / RMA'ing the card, while I'm not even certain I'd still be able to do given the fact I've had the card for a few years, isn't even a viable option. Going without the card for any period of time is a compromise I'm simply unable to do at present. So, what I'm looking for is a confirmed, working replacement for the Twin Frozr II setup or a place I can actually order one to stick onto the card.
Has anyone been able to find a way of getting their hands on one or, ideally, can anyone confirm a 3rd party cooling solution for the GTX 460 Hawk Talon that is fully compatible?
Apologies if I've missed this in another thread, I did a quick search but found nothing conclusive other than various suggestions of RMA procedure and such (Again, as I said, it's not a viable option for me).
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    chiXu

Yes. As I said, the issue is with a fan having stopped working completely. I noticed no difference after reseating the heatsink and applying new paste (Artic Silver, removed all old paste, everything done as it should have been done).

  • MSI GTX 460 Hawk

    Hi,
I have recently purchased and installed this gfx card. Updated all my drivers and cross referenced with MSI Live 4 to make sure my system is as updated as it can be. My comp specs are in my sig
I have had a look at the Afterburner software which triggered my concerns. My stock "out of the box" core clock speed is 675mhz (which is a regular gtx460) as opposed to the suggested 780mhz.
I have done abit of googling and everyone seems to have out of the box 780mhz.
I was wondering if this is supposed to be the case, where the card under factory settings is 675 and the OC'd edition still requires me to overclock it manually via Afterburner? If theres something wrong, is there anything I can do before taking it back to the store for return/exchange?
I am pretty sure that the card I purchased is indeed a hawk as there are labels on the card and did not get ripped off. Also I live in Australia (if that matters).
I would really appreciate any feedback or opinions in regards to this topic.

Quote from: ggCakes on 14-January-11, 12:11:41
hmm, they seem to claim that in certain areas the 460gtx hawk is defaulted at 675mhz and should live with it.
I am quite upset at this "solution", as I did not pay extra money for a hawk only to run it at a normal 460's clock speed
anyone got the vbios updates etc?
    It's vary either 780 or 810 ==> http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=prodvgaspec&maincat_no=130&cat2_no=&cat3_no=&prod_no=2152
You have 675 [e.g. yours vary too much..]
Can you tell the VGA SN?

Apply new desired clock freq. with Afterburner 2.1.0 Beta 6:

Then go test the VGA and see if everything is working fine

  • Gtx 460 Hawk Modding? about gtx 557,5 :)

Hi guys, i am bored about my GPU so i wanna do some crazy things on it
i have a gtx 460 hawk talon attack, vid of the card is 1,012 and i was so Unlucky about it    it hits hardly 880 mhz without Artifacting on 1,087 volt
i once tried 1,15 volt and reached roughly to 932 mhz and take benchmark on Vantage... it was minor artifacting...
my elder brothers Hawk Talon Attack is vid 0.937 volt and can reach easily 951 mhz with 1.087 volt on vantage
i wonder if i add some nec/tokin capacitors to my card according to gtx 560 twin frozr, and gtx 560 ti twin frozr, will it increase my o.c. capacity
    note: sorry for my english...
    About the referance this idea:
    http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/4010/backfulln.jpg

    http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GTX_560_Twin_Frozr_II_OC/images/back_full.jpg

you just have a lower potential gpu. Adding capacitors won't change that. Progress with such means is most likely marginal but as any hardware modifications comes at the cost of possibly killing the card.

  • Powering a MSI GTX460 Hawk Talon Attack correctly......am I doing it right?

    Hey everyone, Merry Christmas!
So I just upgraded from a PNY 9800 GX2 (which gave me nothing but problems with overheating) to MSI's GTX460 Hawk Talon Attack.
I consider myself pretty tech savy but when it comes to wiring and power requirements I don't know what I'm doing. I know, pretty bad. I'm learning as I go though!
Anywho I wanted to make sure I have my card hooked up correctly and safely. I am using this power supply with these power stats:
    http://www.ocia.net/fullsize.php?filename=143_8.jpg
The card came with two 2x molex to 6-pin PCI-e adapters. Not having the cords available to connect all four to free molex connections I used a 6-pin PCI-e to 6-pin PCI-e and one 2x molex to 6-pin PCI-e adapters (or converter, whichever they are called). To my understanding when using a 2x molex to 6-pin PCI-e adapter you cannot have them running off say a "Y" splitter for example. So each molex must connect to separate power sources. So..........what I did was I purchased two molex Y splitters (all they had, no female to female molex cables) and pluged each into the PSU and split the 2x molex to PCI-e adapters going to each of them (so they don't share the same cable, thats the important part right?).
Where I'm getting is this the correct way to power the gtx460, or is it better to have just two 6-pin PCI-e to 6-pin PCI-e cables going from the PSU directly to the GPU?
    Thanks,
    John
    My system specs:
    Mobo: EVGA nforce 680i SLI
    CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4ghz Q6600
    Memory: 8gb OCZ DDR2
    Hard drive: 3x 500gb WD 7200 rpm
    PSU: Ultra x3 800w ATX

I gotcha. My situation is I don't have all my gear with me so those cables weren't available on hand when hooking everything up. So I went out and was only able to find in a hurry two Y splitters.
As you explained that is how I have the one 2x molex to pci-e adapter hooked up. Both connected to different cable sets being powered separably.
Just to reiterate, having one "2x molex to pci-e adapter" and one "6 pin pci-e to 6 pin pci-e cable" powering the GPU is ok? It won't cause any issues down the road?
Sorry for my ignorance on this subject, thanks for your patience and help.

  • GTX 460 Hawk SLi Problem

    Hello
I have this "small" problem with my MSI GTX 460 Hawk 1 GiG SLi.. Softwares like 3DMark Vantage and Bad Company 2 just dies/stops/vanishes/crashes in a wierd way... Once you are playing and then it just goes back to desktop like u didnt ever play the game or so.. like *puff*
I have tryed many things to resolve this issue, mostly these common things what u can find from every forum.. reinstal drivers and change power rails and so on... Now i have tryed drivers 258 + 259 (msi recommended) + 260 + 260.93 beta and 3dmark 06 works fine with everyone of those.. But vantage and bad company 2
gives me a problem and i guess some other games also but havent had time to try other games yet..
Tho i got vantage work once when i runned it in vista sp1 mode and 258 drivers.. wierd.. ehh?
I have already tryed so many things to resolve this that i dont have anymore ideas... What can it be? Can it be just a driver problem? I run both cards in 16x slots... Manual says slots 1 and 3 are x16 when sli so... directx is also updated...
    My comp specs are these..
    I7 930 @ 4 GHz (Stable)
    Asus Rampage 3 Xtreme
    6 gigs 1600 MHz DDR3
    850W Corsair HX850 (SLi Ready)
    MSI GTX 460 Hawk SLi
    WIN7 x64
What info u guys/girls still need?
Everything worked fine with cpu oc when i runned GTX 275... ofcourse its single card but cpu is stable anyways tested with intel burn and prime95..

    Hmmmm...
Looks like @ this point that newest nvidia drivers solved the problem... 260.99... Vantage runs fine... one crash first.. then some driver bug or smth (RTTI crash or so)..  but third run went ok and over 31k points... So didnt have to remove any hdd´s or oc to get some more power ^^ thnx anyways for the replys, always great ^^

  • Gtx 460 Hawk downclocks when under stress... what's wrong?

    Hi people,
i've received a GTX 460 Hawk, i've been testing it to check if it worked fine and how it overclocks but when i use Furmark to check stability after a while the gpu clock gets to 450mhz...
No driver error, just is gets to 450mhz.
This happens only in overclock, the card works great at stock speeds. Temps are fine, and i've changed the power setting from adaptive to max power.
I've tried latest 290.36 beta drivers and latest whql 285.62 drivers. It does the same.
I'm on a clean installation of Win7 64bit since i got an SSD and re-installed everything, my PSU is a Corsair HW1000Watt that used to run GTX 580 until a couple of months ago, so i think is powerful enough.
What can i try? Thank you in advance.
PS my card has 70.04.13.00.01 bios version (MSINV238MS.115), i've seen that on TechPowerUP! there is a 70.04.2E.00.04 (MSINV238MS.116) version too. do i have to update the bios or is kinda the same?
the MSI Updater won't find any new bios for my card...
    PS my specs are:
    Intel 950
    Asus Sabertooth X58
    G.Skill Trident 6-7-6-18
    SSD Crucial M4
    MSI GTX460 Hawk
    Corsair HX1000W

Test using games to see if the same condition occurs.  If the card functions properly in games, nothing is wrong and the card is operating properly.
Of course, if you go by the answer MSI Tech Support gave me, their cards are designed to downclock under load....in which case, even if it's trying to render heavy 3D graphics at idle clocks it's operating properly....

  • GTX 460 HAWK - OC issue

Have anyone running GTX 460 Hawk at above 900 mhz?
I'm using MSI AFTERBURNER version 258.96.
I have to increase my core voltage but every times when I click apply, it goes back to the default of +10.
I have already checked the unlock voltage control, unlock voltage monitoring and force constant voltage.
Did I miss out any setting?

Mine was OK at +70 for 910, wouldn't go any higher than 910 without giving me trouble and didn't need more than +70 for 910. Just start working yours up from original 810 at factory voltage until problems start and then raise voltage till stable again. I found on mine +60 at 875 and then +70 at 910 was max. Yours may OC higher or lower depending on luck of the drw just don't except to get any closer to 1000 than I did. 1000 as said on the box is not a realistic claim in my opinion.
