MSI GTX 580 Lightning original bios problem

I purchased today an MSI Lightning GTX 580 video card. My bios switch is on "original" position. I run MSI Afterburner and my stock speeds are : Core Clock 772 MHz, Shader Clock 1544MHz and Memory Clock 2004 MHz (stock cards speed). This card supposed to be oc. So do i have to RMA it or i have to change something to the bios switch to work at the right speeds?

Hi Clio16v (1.8 or 2.0? )
For your information:
We don't print clockspeeds on the box, but you will be able to find all product information on the label that is on the side of the box which has an MSI part number.
Using the codes on there, we identify a different "SKU" for instance, does it come with a game bundle, or is it only for a certain territory, is it OC'ed or not..
These codes are also what the reseller/dealer uses when he orders the cards.
In your case, if he matches the description of an OC card to a non-OC code, you end up with a product being sold (by a reseller/dealer) under wrong specs.
This is normal practice in the IT business, notebooks are the best example.
For instance, we have the GT780DX
This nice gaming machine comes with various configurations, one or two hard drives, 8, 12 or 16 GB of memory, BluRay or DVD, different keyboard layouts.
In this case (As the machine is just a few weeks old) we only have two different SKUs available of the GT780DX at newegg, but you can imagine that this varies per country ending up with a lot of different GT780DX's all with different specs.
I hope this clears things up a bit as MSI is not intentionally selling cards with wrong clock speeds.
As suggested here before, I think you will have to take this to your dealer if you want to resolve it.
First of all thank you for your reply. I think that as an end user don't have the knowledge to decrypt the serial number or part number of every vga card that is on the street right now. This is between MSI and the resellers/dealers. And it is not my business to know that i have to look on that label to find out what i'm buying that moment. My label is not saying anything about oc...But i dont know if it should say so... In the case of MSI N580GTX Twin Frozr II/OC and MSI N580GTX Twin Frozr II you put a sticker on the box to seperate the two editions... Why don't you do the same for the N580GTX Lightning Edition? If you produce two different products(one oc and one stock) why dont you put it on the box to protect your buyers from every mistake (accidental or intentionally) that the resellers do? Why do i have to suffer to take the card back to the reseller, wait for a long time without the card which i have already paid for (reseller is out of stock) and have the possibility to take back a refurbish product although i paid for a new one? This is not a proper treatment from a big company like MSI not to protect their buyers... I also see that every vga card on the site (at least the expensive ones) has the same note "The specifications may differ from areas. Please check with your local dealers". So finally we never know what we are buying from MSI. All their products may have different specifications than advertised...So its a lucky pick, if you are lucky you are going to take what you paid for...Sorry but this is not right...

  • MSI GTX 580 Lightning XE Fan Problem

    Hi forumites
I am the proud owner of a new MSI GTX 580 Lightning XE Graphics card, so far I have not had any problems at all with my games and am happy to report the card appears to be functioning in the way I had hoped (better than my previous card).
However there is one annoying problem I have been having with the fans. For some strange reason the card appears to be spiking fan usage at idle for no reason.
I can be sat idle at desktop, or surfing the internet and for no reason the fan shoots up to 3500RPM.
In order to try and troubleshoot the problem I have done some fan usage monitoring with MSI Afterburner, as you can see here the fan speed seems to shoot straight up and then back down again.
My card has not been modified in anyway , neither have I fiddled with the card's BIOS.
Do you have any suggestions as to what could be causing this problem?
My signature should hopefully contain my system specifications. Card appears to be functioning fine in games and 3dMark and I have not had ANY TDR crashes, just this fan thing is getting quite annoying!
    Thanks.
    John

Sorry I must admit I must have not made myself quite clear, it is both fans on the GPU which rev up to very fast speeds for a second or two. I have noticed that this only happens within the first say 10-20minutes of the PC being switched on, it then calms down and acts as normal after a while.
Even loading with Kombuster etc fans rev as expected to a speed to cool the card (~68C FULL LOADING in KOMBUSTER) I am pretty happy that this temperature is what I should be expecting as various reviews say this card is very cool compared to say a Generic 580. I also recall a post of your's Svet somewhere saying that the card loads from 65-70 depending on operation and cooling of case etc.
I shall have to take the side off and inspect the LEDs.

Yes, i confused your case with this one: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=155293.0
Where one of the FANs was behavior different than another one, so in my last reply in your topic i was assuming that this was your issue

  • MSI GTX 580 Lightning + Asrock Z68 Pro 3 Issue

    Hi!
I just bought a new computer with gtx 580 lightning and asrock z68 pro 3 motherboard. I am having issues with the pci-e slot and the graphics card. My motherboard doesnt recognize the card. I have updated my MB bios to newest one but it didn't help. I also tried the lightning in my old gaming rig and it worked fine there. Also tried my old graphics card in my new rig and worked just fine. Power wise I should be fine because my old rig has 600w power supply and it worked, new rig has 50 wats more and is more quality PSU.
Also the red and green leds on the gtx 580 lightning are on and fans are spinning but when I try to attach the monitor it just doesnt give anything out.
I am really running out of options here and dunno what to do. I have the intel i5 2500k processor so I can use the onboard graphics to prowse the web. Also managed to install win7 64bit and MB drivers.
Anyone having this same issue ? Or any solutions to my problem? Would be nice to get my rig up and running fully.
    Thanks!

AsRock already tested the combination and it works:
    http://forums.tweaktown.com/asrock/45683-asrock-z68-pro-3-msi-gtx-580-lightning-issue.html
Maybe the motherboard has broken PCI-e slots, as Asrock suggested, goto a dealer and check it out with them.
The combination is not a problem, but if a PCI-e slot is broken it can explain all of this.
As the card works in other systems, it's hardly possible it's the card, else it would fail too.
And yes, because an ATI card works it doesn't mean the PCI-e slot is good, have seen such before.
He replaced the board with new one Asus P8P67 Pro and still doesn't works on-board led shows VGA init error.
So 2 different brand new boards with broken slots is very unlikely. [both of them worked fine with different video cards]
The MSI's GTX 580 Lightning worked fine in meantime with the same PSU [he also tested with different one and it works fine with both PSU's on 3th board] on 3th different mainboard.
It's some kind of compatibility issue [based on all facts]

They test it but not with the same card Lightning card, they used reference card instead [MSI N580GTX-M2D15D5].
The VBIOS structure of the non reference design used on Lightning cards are very different compared to regular versions,
as well the card itself compared to reference one.

  • Is 650W PSU going to handle MSI GTX 580 Lightning Extreme

There are divided rails 4x 12V@18A each on my PSU.
is my PSU going to handle MSI GTX 580 Lightning Extreme 3GB DDR5 ?
    http://www.amazon.com/MSI-N580GTX-Li...4570127&sr=8-1
as this card has ca 30W more consumption then my current GTX560. I run it overclocked and I see no problems here. (almost on 1000Mhz Core)
As on the sites I've read they tested and they had max 20-30A, so I expect there will be no problem.
Can you guys help me figure it out?
    Thank you.

    Oks,
    625W-155W = 470W , 470W/12V = 39A
The MSI GTX 580 Lightning Extreme needs at least 42A at +12V
I would replace that PSU with better one, [more quality one, not Fortron] and single rail [not a multi rail PSU] ==> PSU's---2 x 12v---The Dual Rail Myth: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=77071.0
with Single rail quality PSU like Corsair 650TX/V2, 750TX, 850TX or above depend of your needs
Ok, I'm going to CORSAIR HX1050, just to be ready for eventually SLI, overcloacking and to not upgrade 3x times :D
    .. Thanks

  • Desperately need help finding MSI GTX 580 lightning.

I ordered components for the new PC I'm building last week, and parts have arrived in the mail periodically. For my graphics cards, I ordered two MSI GTX 580 Lightning (not Xtreme) cards, both from Amazon. I intended to use them in SLI, for gaming as high resolution (please do not tell me they're overkill, I already know they are. I'm a bit tired of people pointing that out). The first one is scheduled to arrive soon, but the second card was cancelled without reason a day after I placed the order. I then tried to order the second card from AVA Direct, but that order was also abruptly cancelled. I've looked on Newegg, Amazon, and a dozen or so other sites, but can't find another available GTX 580 Lightning. I don't know why they're suddenly not available... I would be really, really grateful if anyone would help me find another MSI GTX 580 Lightning card to use in my dream rig. I live in the US. What I'm trying to do here is find someone who knows a site that has an available card that I can complete my build with. So... Help find a graphics card for a devoted enthusiast?

It seems that amazon doesn't have the product anymore after searching for 'gtx 580 lightning' and 'msi gtx 580'. Try creating a support ticket to ask msi if the product is just plain discontinued, as I don't see anyone with it in stock.
And actually, I did manage to find this place: http://www.colamco.com/store/stat/product/1071363.html
But the price for the card there is over $600.

  • MSI GTX 580 Lightning Xtreme Edition Turn Off LED's?

    Hello all MSI users.
Strangely enough, I only heard about MSI Products since last night, and I knew straight up, I needed to get my hands on one of these outstanding products.
The only thing that is holding me back from getting this amazing MSI GTX 580 Lightning Xtreme Edition is the question of if there is posibility in the utilities or on the card itself to turning off the LED's completely?
(then of course turning them back on without damaging the GPU or the LED's.)
The reason why I ask is, I usually leave my PC on over night to do either some long Downloads, a Defrag or a Deep Virus Scan, and as my PC is technically next to my bed, I don't want to be kept up all night with it shining in my face and then having to chuck a T-Shirt over the top of my case.
Please inform me if there is any possibility of this to work without having to go to some 'Xtreme' to turn the LED's off.
    Much Appreciated Guys.

not possible, when VGA is in IDLE there are less amounth of LEDs that's active.
you can place a piece of black tape over leds to "disable" them

  • MSI GTX 275 Lightning Core Clock problems

    Gooday
I've had my MSI GTX 275 lightning Edition card now for about 1.5 years, when i play games the core clock runs at its full speed of 702 Mhz, then when im in Windows, its drops to 301 Mhz (understandable, 2 different modes 3d/2d, i think), but now when i play games and dont alt-tab or anything it runs @ 702, but the minute i alt-tab just to check something on the net i start getting problems, when i switch back to the game it switches smoothly and perfect, but 30 minutes sown the line the whole display freezes,(but the game sounds continue) then if alt-tab or ctrl-alt-del its runs it fine but from then on the card FORCES the core clock down to 400Mhz and i have to restart the pc to get to to normal. and it does that even more often if msiafterburner is running (but also when i uninstalled it)
Why would it do that?, the core doesnt get hot, i leave the fan on 100%(core temp=45-60'C)
    Extra info :
    Drivers=270.61 (same on 266, and 258)
same happens if i oc to 740
    psu is 600W Vantec (2x 22 amp 12V rail)
    Core i7 920 (no oc)
    7 GB Ram
    Windows 7 x64 SP1 ultimate

Sorry i forgot to add that to the first post, yep, re-installed windows, with/out SP1 with th different driver versions and also with/out or different gpu programs ie afterburner evga precision, riva tuner. The problem wasnt noticeable for about a year then lately it got worse and worse. I thought it was afterburner and the settings but without afterburner the game would only freeze much later on (few more hours) i saw (sorry cant say were exactly) that other users also had similar problems, where the game would get very choppy and windows would say "display driver stopped responding...) mine doesnt tell me that, the game would freeze and/or get a black screen and then few seconds later it would return but most of the time with the Forced down (400mhz) clock but windows didnt pick up display probs

  • MSI GTX 580 Lightning XE - no DTS-HD and no Dolby Digital TrueHD?

    Hello,
I have just upgraded from the gtx 460 to 580 Lightning XE and the above audio formats are gone. I thought the 280.26 drivers caused it so I went back to 275.33 and DTS-HD and DD TrueHD are still missing.
Since the gtx 460 supports these formats I presumed that the 580 does as well.
In Playback Devices > Supported Formats, only 3 formats are listed: DTS Audio, Dolby Digital Plus and Dilby Digital
In Nvidia Control Panel, the HDCP is not supported when I select my TV/amp. When I had my tv/amp connected via hdmi cable to gtx 460, all was functioning correctly, all formats were listed.
PowerDVD and Total MediaTheater worked perfectly fine playing dts-hd an dd truehd from bluray discs, now these formats are just not available anywhere. Only normal DTS and DD is played.
I really hope that this is a software issue
DTS-HD and DD TrueHD are supported from HDMI 1.3 version. The GTX 580 chip supposedly supports HDMI 1.4a. NVIDIA and MSI please fix it!
Here's the fix request form, please can as anyone request a fix through this form? http://nvidia-submit.custhelp.com/app/ask
The chip 580 should support DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD.

have you tried msi's drivers too? http://www.msi.com/product/vga/N580GTX-Lightning-Xtreme-Edition.html#/?div=Driver&os=Win7%2032
No I haven't. I didn't even think of that. I always go for the official nvidia drivers. I'm downloading it now.
edit: Installed them drivers, and no change. DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD are still missing.
    I found some "info" here:
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/4008/nvidias-geforce-gtx-580/4
    Quote
NVIDIA slightly revised their display controller for GF110/GTX580; the good news is that HDMI 1.4a is supported, the bad news is that full audio bitstreaming is not supported so it’s the same as it was on the GTX 480: 8 channel LPCM and lossy audio formats like DD+ and DTS. This actually caught us off-guard since we were expecting the full GF104 treatment here, but it just goes to show that this is a GF100-derrivative after all. Unfortunately this also extends to the number of displays supported – NVIDIA still only supports 2 displays on one card, so you need to run in SLI if you intend to take advantage of 3DVision/NVIDIA surround across 3 monitors.
If that's true, it doesn't look good..

  • MSI GTX 580 Lightning Issue

I,  Sometimes in games (rift, mass effect 2, wow, etc.) textures have gone weird or the game freezes.   Terminating the game and back to desktop doesn´t show any problem.  The temps are always under 60°C (29°C idle).   But if I start again the game the artifacts or weird textures shows again.
If I reboot the pc, the problem persist.   I've run occt and unigine to test and both of them shows errors/artifacts.
But if I do a pc shutdown and wait for a minute and then turn it on,  no errors in occt or unigine shows, and the card runs and render fine in the games for days, until something triggers the issue.
The card is running on factory settings, never OCed from that.
I've clean installed the drivers on the cd, the msi page drivers, 275.33 from nvidia and 280.26 too.   Currently running 275.33.

    Hi Svet,
I Though that too, but the card runs fine in another hardware but same PSU (tested stability of the psu also, checked the 80+ Gold status too in live test) and another not so fancy psu.   One 275GTX runs flawless too.   So I'm thinking in that my mb doesn´t like the 580 lighting (and loves the 275).  I'll see a possible upgrade to one 990FX (MSI) next month, hoping the issues vanish
    Thanks you again
by the same PSU you mean you take your PSU and used there, or in your second machine you have the same model PSU there too?
also do you use the same vga drivers when you tested them?

  • Request: MSI GTX 770 LIGHTNING 2GB BIOS

    Hi,
I love this card - great performance. The only thing that annoys me is, that the fans are running on 33% fanspeed when idle while the temperature is hovering at 28°C.
I think this is a bit overkill I would like to request a BIOS with fan speeds set to 20% on idle, while the max fanspeed can stay as it is.
Could you provide an appropriate BIOS? I am currently running the classic BIOS as my mainboard doesn't have UEFI.

  • MSI GTX 580 Twin Frozr 2/OC Problems

Hey guys, I just build my second new(er) computer (specs below, system 2), with this MSI GTX 580 Twin Frozr 2/OC, and I am having several problems. The first problem I noticed was was in Starcraft 2, I was having major texture stretching (looked like units were stretched across the map, exc.), so I tried a new driver to no avail. I delt with that problem and played for several hours to find that the screen turned black, then recovered (happened several times), which I was able to continue playing after. I went ahead and tried Battlefield Bad Company 2, and noticed the same texture stretching, but with big black shapes (almost looked like large artifacts), so I checked the temps, 74c, so that was not the problem. I continued playing for about 5 minutes before the screen went black, turned white, and the game became unresponsive. Thinking it was a possible PSU problem, I moved the card to my first system (specs below, system 1), and produced the same results.
Does anyone have any ideas, or is it time to RMA the card. Sad thing is, I am seeing alot of people having problems with this card, I hope MSI didn't do me wrong here.... :(
P.s. I flashed the newest BIOS for the VGA and the MoBo.

Unfortunately it has, and the artifacting only seems to get worse as time goes on (if the card/game doesn't crash right away that is...). I guess RMA'ing is my only option at this point, thanks for your help.
I'll chock it up to a defective card this time, but seeing all the problems with these similar cards from MSI is making me worried... I only hope MSI didn't do me dirty with this product.
No worries, call msi at +1.626.271.1004 within regular business days and they will take care of it

With LN2 BIOS we need to have more OVERCLOCK potential or not? For me ORGINAL bios give me more OVERCLOCK potential than LN2 BIOS. Why is it so?

Quote from: flobelix on 26-March-14, 04:10:14
Obviously you don't understand. LN2 allows to set higher voltages not increase oc potential with the same settings. When setting less extra voltage in LN2 than in normal vbios results can't be better.
Then why is voltage on "LN2 BIOS" only +12 and on ORIGINAL BIOS much better  +100?
    Look this: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2013/09/22/msi_geforce_gtx_780_lightning_video_card_review/3#.UzHuZPldWio
He have more OC potencial with LN2 BIOS! I really don't understand! And in Afterburner writes: MSI gtx 780 Lightning (LN2)
And when is my card on ORIGINAL bios in Afterburner writes " Graphics Card: MSI GTX 770 Lightning LE"
When is card on LN2 bios in Afterburner writes "Graphics Card: GeForce gtx 770"
