MSI GTX 750 ti + HP Pavilion + Legacy BIOS setting = still doesn't work

I recently decided to upgrade the video card in my ~3 year old HP Pavilion (h8 1237-c).  It's been running a GeForce GTX 460, but the thing is really loud and obviously several generations behind current video hardware.
So I purchased an EVGA GTX 750, but quickly ran into problems.  Apparently, HP hasn't released a BIOS upgrade for this Pavilion for a long time (I'm on the latest - 7.12, dated 10/12/2011), and newer cards won't work with it.  There were a lot of posts in multiple forums (Toms Hardware, HP forums, etc.) about this particular MSI 750 card and the "Legacy BIOS" switch it offered being a solution for this problem.
So I returned the EVGA card (which resulted in a Newegg restocking fee - ouch) and ordered the MSI card.
I'm getting the *exact same problem* (regardless of which position, 1 or 2, that the switch on the MSI card is using) - computer starts to boot up, won't get past the HP "splash screen" where I can hit ESC to enter setup.
Am I about to return my second video card, and just live with my old 560?  Or can someone suggest something else I can try?

The problem is with the component support of your HP machine. The problem is not GOP or legacy vios but the need for a ME8 firmware including bios to run a GTX7xx on a socket 1155 based system. If HP can't supply such you will never be able to run a GeForce GTX7xx or later in your system.

  • MSI GTX 750 Ti with Motherboard Legacy BIOS

I was wondering if I could run the MSI GTX 750 Ti with a Legacy BIOS. I recently purchased an EVGA GTX 750 and it is not compatible with my motherboards Legacy BIOS (had no idea before purchasing it). I know MSI's has a Dual BIOS switch on the card, so I was wondering if it would work?
I have a pre-built HP system, the HP P7-1233w. I know the GTX 750 Ti has a TDP of 60w, my power supply is a 300w HP with two +12v rails. The +12va has 12a and the +12vb has 16a.
So if anyone can tell me if the MSI GTX 750 Ti (specifically this card: MSI N750TI-2GD5/OC) will work with my Legacy BIOS Motherboard that would be appreciated.
    Thank you in advance!

What does the Dual BIOS switch do on the card? Does it relate to the motherboard BIOS, or no?
No, it offers a legacy and UEFI/GOP vbios for Win8 feature support (fastboot/secureboot). If using a board with a legacy bios it is irrelevant what vbios is selected as both are supporting legacy mode (UEFI/GOP vbios is hybrid). Only for boards with a UEFI bios which is not GOP compliant using the legacy vbios is required.

  • MSI GTX 750 Ti upgrade for a "hpe-521 it" model

    Hello,
I would like to upgrade my desktop video card to a GTX 750 Ti.
My desktop model (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02782877&cc=it&dlc=it&lc=it&product=5095560) should be compatible with the card, at least it seems to me.
I have bought an ASUS card (OC GTX 750 Ti) but I failed to get it working on my computer, even after upgrading the bios to the 7.15 ami version.
I have a problem similar to many other reported on this very forum, I get stuck to the screen logo (interestingly, the video seems to work, so again I think there is no problem of hardware compatibility between mobo, power supply and video card) the computer beeps several times and then the video card get powered off.
The problem seems to be the UEFI, not fully supported in the HP BIOS of my model, and so buying the MSI model of the card should be a viable solution:

    Hi,
The HPE-521it doesn't have the HP version 8 BIOS which many of the newer graphics cards require for compatibility and functionality.

  • MSI GTX 750 screen flickering issue

Since installing my new graphics card (the MSI GTX 750) I've had a problem with screen flickering. I updated to the latest drivers and checked the connection to the monitor and card but there was no improvement.  At the moment I'm using my old video card because the flicker is so distracting.

Are you able to test the card in different PC? Speak to friend/colleague, maybe they can help.
Also try some older nvidia driver versions.
    Did you try different cable/port?
If works fine in other PC, it means your PC is not compatible with latest cards and either you have to RMA the card and get something older like 5 or 6 series or get newer computer. If it doesn't work in different PC then RMA it.

  • Booting BIOS from USB doesn't work (890FXA-GD70)

    Hi all,
in case of BIOS crash, recent MSI motherboards should be able to boot using a BIOS provided from an USB pendrive. I have tested this function by calling it directly by BIOS option, but it fails after BIOS is loaded getting a blank screen (debug code: 09) or the monitor off (debug code: 31). Does any of you know whether the problem is fixable or any hints? Is it working to you?

it's probably m-flash issue, what's current bios version installed?
Yes, you can say: "Flash your BIOS to the last version released some days ago, and retry", but that is the last chance for clear reasons. The problem hasn't been fixed flashing from 1.0 to 1.6, and I guess likely this code with the bug is in non flashable part of BIOS.
I wonder whether Boot 2nd BIOS from USB Drive (or Backup BIOS to USB Drive) is working for someone, it looks impossible it is entirely broken...

  • Satelitte A60-202 after bad BIOS update PC doesn't work

After one very bad update of my BIOS, my PC doesn't work and doesn't switch on.
    What to do now ?

    Thanks

    HI Yves,
Unfortunately, if the BIOS update procedure did not work (or complete correctly), then it is likely that the existing BIOS in the CMOS chip had been corrupted and without this you will not be able to boot up your notebook to correct the problem.
It will be necessary to take (or send) your notebook to an authorised Service Agent to have the BIOS reflashed.

  • MSI GTX 750 TI OC 2GB Compatibility

Hello. Today i decided to update my GPU to a GTX 750 TI OC 2 GB from MSI. I checked it's requirements. I fulfill them, except the MB. My MB is a BIOSTAR G31-M7 TE with a G31 chipset (compatible only with PCIe X16 1.1). Is there any chance to run this GPU with my MB or i need to upgrade it? Here are the rest of my PC specs:
    CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 2.93 @ 2.92 GHz;
    GPU(current): Intel G33/G31 256 MB;
PSU: custom, from my PC vendor (maybe Logitech) ATX-450W
    MB: Biostar G31-M7 TE (BIOS update from 2010);
    RAM: 4 GB DDR2 800 MHz;
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate Edition SP1.
Should i buy this card? Will it run using a 17 inch Monitor (MAG, VGA monitor)? Thanks in advance for all replies.

    Let's see:
That's the minimum for most today's games:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/3xs/configurator/intel-celeron-value-hardware-bundle-ready-to-ship-vb10i
Stock cooler is fine if not overclocking, dual core CPU is also good enough (could upgrade to Intel Pentium K for OC if would like to). That's the parts set I suggest.
And add some GTX650Ti or 750Ti. And new PSU: Corsair/Seasonic/Antec 400W or above and good to go.
Thank you so much for your advice and also for your patience (I'm asking many questions because I want to be sure).

  • MSI GTX 770 Twin Frozr 2GB OC Bios question

I got the MSI GTX 770 Twin Frozr OC 2gb version and would like to know how to verify if I have the newest bios for the gpu.
This is the newest version listed on the website : http://www.msi.com/product/vga/N770_TF_2GD5OC.html#download
And thats an ss from GPU-Z, cant find the exact bios version in that downloadable zip from msi website and i cant seem to find the date created for the bios I have on my card now.
Having some problems with gpu load drops and microstuttering, so wondering if a bios update might sort out my problems.

The vbios on MSI site is a different vbios series (NV282MS.331) and older than your current vbios. Your vbios (NV282MS.352) is dated 06/18/13 while the one from MSI site is dated 06/11/13. Both are legacy vbios versions (no GOP support). You can try the latest hybrid vbios (GOP support) which is NV282MH.351. It is attached.
Decompress the provided .rar archive with Winrar: http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
Then flash the included file with Nvflash for dos: http://www.guru3d.com/files_details/nvflash_download.html
To do so rename the included file to .rom and create a dos bootstick (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165175.0)
Put nvflash and the vbios file on it and boot from the stick. Then type nvflash -4 -5 -6 gop.rom (if renamed vbios that way) and hit enter. Confirm the questions and let the tool flash.

  • MSI GTX 750 Ti 2gb overclocking help

     Hello.
I just installed a MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2 gb into my computer. The card comes with 3 different modes: Silent mode, Gaming mode (default), and OC mode. I believe the OC mode overclocks the card. My question is.. Can i for long periods of the day almost everyday use the OC mode, or will it destroy my card? Thanks in advance

    Hi,
You can use OC mode for sure. Though before you use for 24/7, enable OC mode, run some benchmarking/test stress tool and see how are the temps to make sure that they stay below 80C on 100% card usage with around 50-80% fan speed.

  • Gtx 970 gaming 4g and legacy bios

    Hi all,
As a newbie im looking for some assistance if at all possible.
ive got a hp pavillion h8-1070uk
    8gb ddr3 ram,
ipisb-ch board with bios version 7.12 (lastest version)
    gt545 3gb existing card installed
be quiet 630w psu with 48a output.
I'm trying to install a gtx970 gaming 4g and like a few others on here im getting to the bios screen then nothing further.  Ive read one post (which i cant find now) that there is a bios upgrade for the card to enable legacy bios over uefi (which I've been told is causing the problem).
is there such an upgrade available ? and how would i install it on the card if i cant get to a boot screen ??
    Thanks in advance

There is no legacy vbios for a GTX970 but just hybrid vbios versions supporting legacy and UEFI booting. These vbios versions will not work on older boards with a UEFI vbios not being GOP compliant. However UEFI or legacy vbios is NOT your problem as the system would else not post at all and you would not even see the bios screen. What you experience is a compatibility issue seen on many oem machines that are not updated properly. For socket 1155 board a ME8 bios is required to run vgas of the current generation.
I don't suppose this is a variant on the same issue as the one I've posted about elsewhere on this forum (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=184769.0)? I have a socket-1366 i7-950 on a legacy-BIOS ASUS P6X58D motherboard, which still has perfectly decent CPU performance for everything I need of it and I'm loathe to replace.
ASUS haven't updated the BIOS since 2012, and I'm on that version; the oddness is that whether the system boots or not depends on how I've connected my monitor and whether there's more than one.
I do see when googling around there are people using the same card with the Rampage II and other similar X58 boards of that era, so there may be a quirk specific to this board, card and place.

    Excuse my bad english please,
I bought this video card from newegg, trying to upgrade my computer.
There are some people success to install and run this GPU. I have the same H8 1214 and I did upgrade my PSU to 600w as well. I did switch the button on GPU to Legacy Bios. ==> window did not start. It tells me to press Esc to enter the window, I did and it stucks on black screen.
    Can someone help me!
Note: for some reason, some one moved my first post into a "Solved post" so no one can see my post and help me. I just do not know why. If this person see this, please tell me If I do some thing wrong.

The problem solved was for the original OP and not you.  You high jacked another persons thread.  I know your PC does not have Windows 8 from HP but have a look at this anyways. http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03653200
I see allot of interest in that GeForce card from various manufacturers, and it will not work.  Interesting.  Many of the various motherboards will not tolerate that card because of a BIOS issue computability.

  • MSI R5970-P2D2G Woes: Lockups in 3D Applications + Fan Controt doesn't work.

    Hello,
Yesterday (5/10/10) I received my MSI R5970-P2D2G in the mail. I've been in the market for a HD5970 for quite a while, but living in Latin America it's been next to impossible to get one. I finally managed to get a brand new R5970 through the Amazon marketplace. Anyhow, since the card arrived yesterday I've been trying to get this thing to run properly.
The card locks up mere seconds into any 3D application, roughly when the GPUs reach around 75C. A Furmark multi-GPU stability test will make the card hard lock my system in mere seconds, whereas 3D Mark Vantage actually manages to get through most of GPU Test #1 before hard locking. It usually hard locks somewhere in between the end of GPU Test #1 and the beginning of GPU Test #2. I've only been able to complete the 1-minute Furmark benchmark once. Let's not even get started with trying to play any games. My system just hard locks minutes in.
The other problem I have is fan control. Manual fan control through CCC doesn't work. If I tick the "Manual Fan Control" checkbox and try to move the slider and hit "Apply", the fan immediately jumps to 100% speed regardless of where the slider is. Unchecking "Manual Fan Control" leaves the fan running at 100% for a few minutes before it starts slowing down. MSI's own Afterburner utility doesn't even let me move the fan slider (odd, because it lets me do it on my Diamond HD5870).
My PSU is overqualified to run this card. I've run it through OCCT's 1 hour test with no problems. Same deal with my CPU/RAM overclocks: they've endured hours of Prime95 as well as OCCT with no issues at all. My mobo's BIOS is updated to the last version. I don't think it's a hardware problem.
    I've tried:
-Using my old 5870 to uninstall ALL ATI software and drivers, then running CCleaner and Driver Sweeper to get rid of all ATI driver remnants. Shutting off the PC, switching to my R5970, and installing brand new drivers.
-Using a spare drive with a fresh installation of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bits to try and get the card to run.
-Underclocking the card to see if it ran stable.
-Returning my CPU/RAM to stock values.
-Checking all connectors, trying different PSU connectors, and physically examining the card for any signs of damage.
I made a similar thread over at Anandtech asking for help: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?p=29817320#post29817320
You can go check it out if you want to find out all the stuff I've tried.  About the only thing I haven't tried is flashing the video card BIOS, but there's nothing to flash it too! AFAIK there is only one version of MSI's BIOS for the R5970.
Basically, I'm sort of stuck with a $700 paper weight right now. The few seconds (or minutes) the card manages to run, FPS is sky high and it works like it's supposed to. It always causes a hard lock when GPU temps are nearing 75C though, although I've tried "manually" changing the fan speed to 100% and it still crashes after what seems like a set amount of time. This is all at stock values, mind you. I haven't tried OCing at all. I'm just baffled at the whole thing, as the card is clearly capable of running like it should, it just seems like it can't handle running like it should for more than a few seconds or minutes in some cases. To me, it really seems like the card is borked. Oh yes, the VDDCI Phase #1 sensor doesn't work, reporting a flat 0 on GPU-Z.
Any ideas before I contact the person that helped me buy this card to arrange for a return?

My MSI HD5970 is working like it should, tested it all day.
I used MSI Afterburner and MSI Kombustor to watch the temps on full load, the fan is working and no problems.
(at 65C, 70C, 75C, 80C the fan goes faster, 81C was my max temp on full load)
    Maybe i am lucky
