  • MSI GTX 970 not being detected on first PCI-E 3.0 slot of MSI Gaming 5 motherboa

    Hi guys.
So I recently got myself a new build and some of the components include a MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G GPU and a MSI Gaming 5 mobo. When installing the GPU to the motherboard I found that for some reason nothing was being displayed on the screen. The screen wouldn't display a no signal message but it would stay black when I booted the PC up. However, when I plugged the GPU into the 2nd PCI-E 3.0 slot it would work and display on the screen. I read on a Tom's Hardware thread of someone with a similar problem and it was recommended to him to check his CPU for bent pins and he later confirmed that was the problem. I have tried the same, but as far as I can tell all of the pins were in their natural state and couldn't find any bent ones.
But I also discovered something else which really started to confuse me... When I plug in my old GPU (a Gigabyte GTX 560 Ti) into the first PCI-E 3.0 slot, it would work normally?! Why would it work fine with my GTX 560 but not my GTX 970?? I have tried everything. Even stripping the pc down to the most basic parts on a wooden surface and tested everything but it's still the same problem. I have also made sure that the display setting in the BIOS is set to PEG, but it would still not display anything when the GTX 970 is in the first slot, but if I plug the HDMI cable directly into my motherboard, even with the GTX 970 installed on the first slot, it would display normally. Also, in my BIOS it doesn't even detect anything being in the first PCI-E 3.0 slot in the Board Explorer menu. But when I installed it in the 2nd PCI-E 3.0 slot the Board Explorer menu would recognize it, but would say it's running at x8 and not x16. Should I be worried about this?
    My full setup:
    MSI Gaming 5 Motherboard
    Intel i7 4790K
    MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G
    Kingston HyperX 1333Mhz 8Gb (2x4Gb)
    Corsair RM 750 PSU
    Corsair H80i CPU cooler
Any advice from you guys on what to do or what the problem could be would be greatly appreciated!

remove power cord from the PSU and do >>Clear CMOS Guide<<
also reseat the card into PCI-E slot 1 and make sure its fill very well into the slot

  • GTX 970 not working the way it should.

Hello, I bought a msi gtx 970 yesterday but it is not working good. I can not even play league of legends without stuttering. When I play on maximum settings it says 60 fps, but in fact it is stuttering. The memory clock keeps shooting up to 3506 and than goes down again, this keeps happening. When I had call of duty advanced warfare open for 10 minutes, not even being in a game, the gpu usage is 98% and the memory use is extremely high, while nothing is happening on the screen, just some menus.
All drivers are downloaded and previous drivers from my old video card are removed.
    These are my pc specs.

My current 780Ti is getting bottleneck by the CPU I have.. so even worse would be if I'd have 970 or 980..
That's because yours is the T version. It's not even nearly as good as the normal 4670 or K version.
Actually, it the lowest of the versions. Even S version would be better.
With normal 4670 and 4670K you wouldn't be getting bottleneck.

I have one more question. I cant really decide if I shall get the i5-4690k for my new motherboard or the i7-4790k. Is the i7 worth the 100 euro extra? I dont do things like photoshop, maybe a bit of streaming though.
What kind of cooling you have currently, or are you using stock cooler?
If you don't have sufficient cooler or are running stock cooler, you will need to invest on better cooling.
In which case, get the i5 4670K and buy a new, better cooler with that 100$.
I would recommend at least Hydro H80i if you have a free 120mm fan slot in the case.
If not, get the BeQuiet! Dark Rock Pro 3 or similar.

  • B2 Error with new MSI GTX 970 :(

    Hi there team!
Just registered to try and get help. I spent around 6 hours researching + trying all the suggestions throughout many different forums, but the B2 error still persists. I am currently running the following spec:
Mobo - MSI Z68A-G43 (G3), with version 4.30 ( I flashed bios last night and still no help)
    CPU - Intel® Core™ i5-2500K Processor, 3.5GHz etc.etc.
    RAM - Corsair Vengeance 2x4gb at 1333MHz
    GPU - MSI GTX 970 GAMING Twin Frozr V 4GB GDDR5
PSU - Cooler Master Silent Pro 700W
    I have tried:
-Taking out the card and using the on-board graphics to flash the bios to later version, No help. (during this process, the B2 error does NOT show up)
-Upgraded the card to latest nVidia drivers, even uninstalled and re-installed them. No help.
-Upgraded all the drivers from MSI, i.e. chipset etc. through Live Update 6. No help.
When the card is in, I cannot even access bios, it just gets stuck at B2 screen for like a minute, and then carries on with the boot process. I am able to play games etc. after the booting, but this error for sure should not be there when the PC boots up. I didn't have any issues with my old GTX 560 TI. I've read different forums saying that it might have something to do with the mobo thinking that something has to be connected to the on-board graphics; or that flashing BIOS helped a lot of users, but not me :(.
I don't have a second PC to test the card on.
Literally, I would try anything, please someone just help :(( This card is a beast and I wanna be able to properly use it and not having to worry about this error.
Thank you very much guys, hope someone can help!

Man thank you so much! It is finally working!!! Thank you!!!! ))) It is showing correct version in BIOS, does not show B2 error whatsoever, all done! )
Thanks for your time! You can close thread, but it's very useful for anyone that has this issue!
Wich version of BIOS do you have installed? Can you OC your processor with new BIOS?

  • MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G Issues & BIOS Update

     bios.zip (136.34 kB - downloaded 37 times.)
    Hello,
ever since I bought my GTX 970 I've had about 5 BSOD's while playing CS:GO and GTA:V. I am not sure whether it's a GPU issue or not, but I never had that issue before (at least with CS:GO).
    Tech specs:
    MB: z87-pro
    CPU: i7-4770K
GPU: MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G
    OS: Win7 x64 SP1
    latest OS updates
    latest nVidia drivers
I've been wondering if there's a BIOS update for my GPU? I also tried just today to download MSI Live Update 6 but after executing the installer it displays "This application does not support this platform."
    I've attached my GPU Bios.
    Thanks in advance!

Quote from: Nichrome on 26-April-15, 03:21:48
    Hi
With LiveUpdate, don't worry. Many users got issue with it, I believe MSI is aware of this already.
Is your motherboard running latest BIOS?
Is it known to work fine with other graphics card??
Do you have any OC on your CPU/RAM? (RAM OC=more than 1600MHz). Remove and try again.
What did the BSOD say? Error code?
    Heya, thanks for the reply.
That's good to know for Live Update, just wanted to let you know. Before my GTX970 I was using an Asus GTS 450 (I know, lame) and used integrated graphics a couple of times but never had BSOD's during games with either of those. I didn't take a note of the BSOD error code, can I find a log somewhere on my system to upload it?
OC-wise everything is running on stock clock, BIOS is also latest version (2103, according to Asus).

  • Can't OC my MSI GTX 970 GAMING

I had MSI GTX 970 GAMING which OC-ed very well (1540 Mhz boost) but had to return it because of loud coil whine. I bought second MSI card which is silent but can't OC it even by +50 Mhz in Afterburner because it drops gpu clock to default value in Valley benchmark after couple of minutes of testing. Do you know what is the reason of that?

Quote from: flobelix on 17-October-14, 15:48:18
Everything has been said above. As the reboot issue is no issue if using working clockrates there is still no problem.
You really don't see the issue with contributing to a thread about overclocking with the answer "Don't overclock and there isn't a problem"?
Flobelix, I'm not asking for a refund here.
I don't want a new card via RMA, and I'm not saying my card is bad in any way.
If it works at the shipped clocks just fine, then it's clearly fine. That's all that's promised anyway.
But I didn't come to a forum and post in this topic about overclocking to be shut down for talking about overclocking.
    I'm looking for discussion.
I already said if someone felt my issue was sufficiently different than the OP I'd happily make a new thread.
If that's not the case, then I think I'm well within the bounds of exactly what this thread is about.

  • Msi gtx 970 Fans Randomly Turning On When Idling???

So basically I have had my msi gtx 970 for a couple weeks and the fans seem to behave as normal? Now once when I was idling I noticed the fans spin up and immediately spin down straight away. So basically now every 30 seconds the fans will spin up and spin straight back down which is weird. The temps are fine and I have checked this using MSi Afterburner. The fans I'm pretty sure are meant to stay off under 65 which it is so why are the fans spinning up. I don't seem to notice it noise wise but I don't know what it is happening. When I check the Fan % in Msi After Burner it doesn't log the fan ramping up but the 'fan tachometer, RPM' section shows it going up and back down, I will link a picture of this. I will link you the youtube video which I highly reccomend watching for a better idea of what's happening. I show you it spin up once and back down then a waiting period and then it doing it again.

I may have found a problem with MSI's fan settings on these cards.
Is this the problem? I don't know. But it does not seem to be set correctly IMO.
As you can see below the fans with the OEM bios are never actually set to 0 rpm. When they are off they are actually being told to spin at 1% power at 23 rpm.
    I have changed mine.
The fans no longer randomly spin with the new drivers. And I have not had any more problems with one fan not spinning up ( although its too early to declare victory on that problem ).
My fans now start up at 50c and even when overclocked to 1503MHZ I have not gone over 65c at 68% fan speed.
Went ahead and copied your settings and everything seems to be working as it should  now. Thanks
    **EDIT**
Just tested it by getting gpu up to 50c and it seems to work. After it drops below 50 it takes a bit for the red fan to spin back down (stayed around 44% for a good 3-5 mins). After the red fan dropped to 0% the black fan slowly dropped down to 29% and that's where it is sitting right now. I think this is per design though since I remember my gpu doing this even on .16. The cooldown process or something I guess.
And at the end of this post black fan is back down to 0%. Good call on the problem looks like it's fixed .

  • REQUEST: MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G original bios

My S/N is 602-V316-03SB1409075224 I would like to request the original vBIOS that my card came with.
My card had problems with the fans randomly spinning and so I updated to the appropriate bios which was NV316MH.182 and that fixed the problem. However I have noticed since updating that the noise from the card has increased when playing games and today whenever starting any game I get an instant crash and my whole system resets, this happens now even when I'm not playing a game and my computer has been randomly restarting and I know it's a problem with the GPU.
I am worried that it is most likely that the GPU is failing but I would like to try flashing the card to its original stock vBIOS and seeing if that fixes anything. Even if you don't believe the vBIOS is the problem, I would still very much like to have the stock vBIOS for my card. Thanks!
    I'm on windows 8.1 64 bit.

I don't know what the name of the vBIOS I updated from was, but it was the stock version that came with the card so most likely the vBIOS before the one I'm currently using which was downloaded to fix the fans randomly spinning.

  • MOVED: MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G + MSI Z87-G45 incompatible? Noise on speakers

This topic has been moved to MSI Intel boards.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=184068.0

    Used hardware
    MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G (+ RMA'ed new one)
    Gigabyte 670 GTX Windforce
MSI Z87-G45 Gaming motherboard (with Intel i7-4770K, Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB, and Crucial M500 - 480GB SSD)
Asus P5N32-E with Q6600 and 8GB DDR2 (Going to test this)
    SoundBlaster-Z Audio card
Roccat Kave 5.1 Gaming Headphones (4x 3.5 mm jacks: Front, Rear, Center&bass, Microphone + USB amp/volume control)
    Corsair B600 (600W) PSU (secondary)
    Corsair RM750 (750W) PSU (Primary)
    To summarize
Corsair RM750 + MSI Z87-G45 + Gigabyte GTX 670 + Roccat Kave = really faint noise only when scrolling in browser, in game not heard
Corsair RM750 + MSI Z87-G45 + MSI GTX 970 + Roccat Kave = in game loud and heavy noise + screech when scrolling in browser
    Corsair RM750 + MSI Z87-G45 + MSI GTX 970 + Soundblaster-Z + Roccat Kave = In game moderate to heavy noise
    Corsair B600 + MSI Z87-G45 + MSI GTX 970 + Soundblaster-Z + Roccat Kave = In game weak to moderate noise
Corsair B600 + MSI Z87-G45 + MSI GTX 970 + Soundblaster-Z + Roccat Kave with Mic disconnected = Almost no noise, ifg you listen for it, really faint background noise in game. But well within my acceptable limits.
    Tomorrow I'll try:
Corsair B600 + MSI Z87-G45 (onboard sound) + MSI GTX 970 + Roccat Kave without mic
Corsair RM750 + Asus P5N32-E (onboard sound) + MSI GTX 970 + Roccat Kave with mic
I failed to mention, that the first thing I did was to remove my HD Audio Front panel connector off its header.
So I did some more searches. The noise has something to do with the capacitors on (presumably) the video card. The higher the pitch usually coincides with higher FPS. So the interference must be coming from the video card, as this is the last thing added and probably the main cause.
Both the motherboard & the SoundBlaster-Z pick up the EMI/RF interference. (I am disappointed by the SoundBlaster about this).
I'll test with the older motherboard and see how I proceed from there.

  • Msi GTX 970 Gaming 4G - GOP ?

    Dear MSI Team,
    i have a msi GTX 970 Gaming 4G in combination with a ASROCK Fatal1ty Z97 killer mainboard.
The VBIOS version of my my GTX 970 is: MSINV316MH.184
When I try to enable the Ultra Fast Boot option im my UEFI Bios of the mainboard, my PC does not Boot and shows a black screen.
Only when I remove the GTX 970 from the mainboard and use the built in graphics card I’m able to boot again.
Therefore I guess the MSINV316MH.184 VBIOS is not a GOP  BIOS.
Question: Is there a other VBIOS available for my GTX 970 Gaming 4G whith GOP ?
The label on my graphics card shows the serial number: 602-V316-050B1412019295
    Thank you in advance
    Best regards

    nope, that guess is wrong
    this is GOP/UEFI vbios
9xx series also have only GOP/UEFI vbioses, they don't have legacy vbios

    Hi,
Yes you will need to reinstall Operating System, type the activation key in, install fresh drivers etc. You can save documents, backup anything like installing packages for favourite software (e.g. CCleaner) but all other has to be reinstalled.
I would suggest Z97 PC Mate with i5 4690K, Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO cooler. Personal budget choice but still with decent performane (quad CPU and OC availability). RAM+PSU+Case you currently have should work fine.

  • MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4GB - TERRIBLE coil-whine!

    Hi All,
I am very disappointed with my brand new MSI 970, well "brand new" I had to return it to Novatech as it was unbearably loud and waiting for feedback from them, I have uploaded a video on Youtube.
I have had a MSI GTX 760 for over a year and I was very excited to buy another MSI product, however I have to say that you have really screwed it up this time.
A quick Google search and you can see that the problem is not isolated (there is also some other users who posted videos on YouTube).

Yes I did return it to my vendor here in UK and the card should be with them tomorrow for testing but as I still within the 7 days I just ask for the money back and I will get something else instead.
Shame really as I am a huge MSI fan however here I see that they have saved money on component compare with its direct competitor, just Google MSI GTX 970 COIL WHINE or even check comments under my video on YouTube and you see that it is not an isolate case.
I agree with you, my MSI card (current MSI card GTX 760) has SOMETIME and NOT SO LOUD coil-whine if you really stick your head inside the case, which I really don't do often  however trust me this card sounded like R2-D2 from Star Wars!
I am writing an article right now about this and the fan issue on our website, we review videogame and not hardware but in this case...

  • MSI GTX 970 Gaming - monitoring both fans

Is there a way to monitor the RPM of both fans on then GTX 970 Gaming card.
MSI Afterburner monitors only one fan
... this would also help to determine when the 2nd fan is spinning while the 1st fan
has stopped and Aferburner is reporting 0 RPM.

Neither HWinfo nor Speedfan show GPU fan speed at all ...OpenHardwareMonitor at lease shows the fan speed %
but only for one fan, Afterburner provides both the fan RPM and the % speed, but only for one fan.
Too bad both fans could not be monitored ...would be pretty useful.
