Hi, what's your model name exactly?
90 degreee is quite normal on ultra slim laptop, such as GS60 series, especially when the system is on heavy loading.
The thermal system can bear such high for a long time without any problem.  If you want to lower the temperature, you can use FN+F7 to switch system to Green mode. (some new models have such feature)
When the system is using Nvidia graphic, the power LED will turn to orange, you can check that accordingly.
As for why the temperature is high on AC plug in, that's because only on AC mode, they GPU and CPU can run on full speed, such design is mean to save the battery power.  And most of the laptop brand applies the same design concept.

  • Msi GX740 expresscard slot

    Hello.
I just bought an GX740 with core i7 and radeon 5870 but I am having some troubles. Os is windows seven 64 bit premium home.
I use an expresscard for making music (echo indigo IOX expresscard) but it doesnt work fine with the MSI GX740.
The problem is the following :
(Drivers are well installed, many versions have been tried with the same problem)
    - If the card is inserted before booting, the system recognize it well, and I can use it. BUT, after a few second of use, the system will totally hang up and stop responding. The sound playing will be looped. I tried to let it for more than 20 min but nothing unstucked..
    - If the card is inserted when the laptop is already online, it doesnt detect the card but a pci to pci bridge or something and the drivers can't be loaded properly, so I cant use the card at all. Expresscard is supposed to be hotpluggable....
When the system crashes, there seems to be a problem with winio.sys (seen in the event viewer), but thats the only thing I know, because there is no bluescreen so I have no dumps I can check....
The card works fine on other systems with the exact same OS and drivers so I suspect it's something to do with the way the laptop configures the card (irq, adress etc).
Also, I have the latest BIOS and all the drivers are well up to date.
Does anyone has already tried the GX740 expresscard slot, and if yes, does it work?
    Cheers!

    OMG!!
looks like msi learned nothing in the past!
please read it all here: same issue with pr200
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=119513.80
    exact the same problematic.
after 8month of writing email with msi-techsupport & dev team they released a special bios "workaround" version and it worked. (also with this special bios version the expresscard has to be inserted before boot. if removed and inserted again it also does not work with this special bios)
it has to do with bios parameters which are not correctly set for the expresscard slots. it`s definitly a msi failure  and has absolutly nothing to do with the certification of the expresscard.
all expresscards with TI chipset are good for audio use. i`ve also tested with certified cards.
so in short: the result was > msi was only able fix it (partly) with a special biosversion. (problem is sitting in the pci-register values for the expresscardslot
i have all emails saved and can send them out on reqest if somebody needs them for further analysis as i was working on this problem with special pci-register software to show up msi thats their problem. so we were able to fix it for the pr200.

  • MSI GX740 antialiasing problem

    I've recently bought a gx740 (eu version, i5 450m)...gpu 5870m. I've a problem with antialiasing.
So far i've tried these games:
JustCause2demo, Company of Heroes, The Witcher, MafiaIIdemo, GTAIV.
In gtaIV there's no option for AA, so no problem, MafiaII works fine with AA....the other games don't work well.
I installed the last catalyst drivers, 10.10 (before i had the "official" ones from msi, i think 8.something)...
With msi drivers i had problems in game menu, too....now with 10.10, just during the game.
    Crysis

Any resolution or setting i tried with AA enabled (2x,4x,8x... no matter what), it results in this problem. Disabling the AA, the games work just fine.
    I don't know....MafiaII works well with AA....i don't think it's a broken GPU.
    What can i do?

A firmware update was released for the VBIOS of your laptop. If you haven't applied the patch yet, perhaps give that a try. You can download it here: http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=firmware&maincat_no=135&prod_no=1999
Only do the update if your laptop is 100% stable and use the >>MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<< as it's the safest method.
i'm trying to download it but i can't....i click on this "1727_023.zip", then appears a screen that says "The specifications may change without notice. The actual products sold are different from areas. Please check the detailed specifications with your local dealers." and i can't see any download button.....
i know that this vbios update just downlock the gpu on idle...can this be the solution?
Then, last thing....I know that the latest vbios firmware downlock permanently the GPU whereas the last but one firmware downlock the GPU only on idle... (http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/457412-msi-gx740-5870-1gb-ddr5-147.html)
the one on the msi site (basing on the date), it's the last but one right?

  • MSI Gx740 matrix

    Hello!
Two weeks ago I bought this lovely machine. The only thing I don't like is the matrix and some kind of "dancing pixels", moving pixels. It happends only on gray color or some variety of gray. And here's the question: is there a possibility to change that? Or is there a possibility to change the matrix for LED? I'll be very gratefull for any answers.

I know Stu but there is many threads on internet about that. For example:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/504879-disappointed-gx740-screen.html
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/528869-msi-gx740-weird-screen.html
I know that there is more articles somewhere but can't remember.  I compared two laptops: mine and Acer Aspire from 2007. And it's pathetic. Acer display got better quality than GX740 lol. I'm really tired of all those dancing pixels, of this "quality". I'm going to wrote a mail to MSI.com and ask them about that. What's making me believe it's a vBIOS version fault is that MSI is releasing some newer versions and they talk about adjustments so maybe that's all about adjustments? Hope so because I don't wanna loose my guarantee. But if it just a poor display quality, I'll change the matrix because my eyes hurts me a lot because of those damn pixels. Besides there are oppinions on notebookcheck.net about poor screen quality in GX740.
EDIT: I forgot to mention: poor quality "exists" only on bright colors. Dark colors looks great but You feel bad when You're launching Firefox and You see something like "granularity" in those pixels. Maybe no-one mentioned about this problem because they can't compare their laptop to other laptop but I compared it with 2 much older laptops.

  • Playing Rift on a MSI GX740 ?

    Hi
Ive just started playing the game Rift.
But i notice i can hardly even run it smoothly on the High settings.
When i run it on High settings with full resolution and AA-Edge smoothing activated im getting only 25FPS.
If i try to run the game on Ultra settings i get 15FPS.
Anyone else playing Rift on a MSI GX740 and how much FPS do u have on the different settings?
    Thank you.

Yes.  However, try to remove the jumpers completely for testing, clear CMOS with main A/C power cable removed from PSU and see what happens. That is the best way to understand what the jumpers do.  Weven with the jumpers removed, you can use the BIOS to freely manipulate settings. However, now you will  be starting from 400 MHz FSB Clock Speed.
Hmm well if i do that i will automatically overclock my CPU to 3.8ghz and my ddr2 800mhz memory to 960mhz (because of the default 1:1.2 ratio). So i think that step is a bit too much, especially when the voltages aren't corrected when i clear the cmos.
So first i'll try to OC with jumpers on default, and when i get the fsb to 400mhz with voltages changes and the right fsb->ram ratio (1:1) i'll change the jumper to 400

  • Msi gx740

I have a msi gx740 doesn't seem to be performing like it should. I read a benchmark about this laptop earlier today that stated certain games and the framerates they got on certain settings. When I have my laptop set to the same settings it doesn't seem to be performing like it should, or as stated by the benchmark. Bad Company 2 gets pretty good fps on ultra settings at 1680x1050, I seem to get a lot of lag when I have those same settings. Also I can barely even play black ops on my laptop, no matter what the graphics settings are it seems to have crappy fps, I heard there were some issues for pc users with this game so maybe that has something to do with it. Anyways I was wondering if anyone could tell me why I am not getting the same fps as someone with the same comp under the same settings? Do I not have something configured right? Any help is appreciated, thanks. Benchmark I was referring to was posted on this forum, and is posted below.
    GX740 (1727)
    CPU:
    i7 720QM ES 1.6GHz - 2.8GHz
    RAM:
    2GB x 2 DDR3-1066
    VGA:
    ATI Radeon Mobility 5870 1GB GDDR5
    Windows Experience Index:
    6.9 / 7.3 / 7.2 / 7.2 / 5.9
    3DMark 06:
    12481
    3DMark Vantage:
    P8110
    Bad Company 2 Benchmark (1680 x 1050):
    Overall Quality - Advanced
    Min/Max FPS = 30/45 fps
    Overall Quality - Medium
    Min/Max FPS = 36/63 fps
    To Follow-up (if have time):
    i7 720QM ES 1.73GHz - 3.06GHz
    DDR3 1333
    Battery time

Beware BlackOps is a very heavily demanding game.
My son with a Dual Core CPU and ATI 4850 videocard had to tune down to 800x600 to make it fast.
This game takes a lot of resources, more then any game I have seen before.
Turn AA and such features off.
Try with very low resolution and all features off, then work your way up.
The high settings of this game are way too demanding for most current systems to run smooth.

  • Have problems with my newly bought MSI GX740

Hey, I already have problems with my newly bought MSI GX740 from JME Data.
The computer is behaving very strangely. To begin with, and so it is extremely tough to boot windows and launch programs, many programs can not even begin to eg Internet Explorer or Norton Antivirus.
When you then turn off your computer and start it again, it starts, as usual, extremely tough right from the bios to load Windows, but then when it should go from the''windowscharge'' to the desktop screen is just black. The cursor is there, but the screen is just completely black.
I have tried to make a''recovery''from windows MSI's built-in recovery function in the BIOS. What it means is that it then reformat the c drive and then reinstall Windows and all programs that were on the computer from the very beginning. This can be very slow to install and when Windows is installed so the problem remains, however, that everything goes extremely slow, and some programs will not even start.
I have also tried to put energy saving options for maximum performance, but it did nothing.
What do you think? Is this something that can fix or is it only to send the rebound?

Well its kinda strange, but i managed to fix it.
I just started in the ''windows secure mode'' or whatever u call it in english, and then when windows started and windows popped up, wich said ''A system change has occured'' or something like that, i pressed accept and after that everything worked perfect

Got a GX740 laptop that shuts down because of overheating when I'm gaming. I can only make it work with the buttom plate off and standing on a Zalman coolerplate. There is still warrenty on it but can't I fix the problem my self? Here you can se the inside of my machine:

Looks pretty dusty to me. Get a can of CleanSafe or a similar product, a soft bristle brush. Brush the fan off to loosen the dust and then do a good job of blowing the dust from the fan and inside the cooler housing. Blow through the cooler outlet also to ensure you get as much dust out of it as possible
