MSI H61M-P21 (B3) - no post, no boot, no beeps

So upon setting up a new PC for a friend, including this board with a Sandy Bridge G850 and 4GB of Gskill 1333.  With just the CPU, RAM, and PSU hooked up, upon turning the machine on I get one or two revolutions of the fan, then nothing.  This occurs in the case, with all drives hooked up just the same as it does on the test bench with a known working power supply.  I am getting absolutely no beep codes or anything from this board, and have tried different RAM, different PSU, and different processor.  Is the board absolutely dead or am I missing something obvious here?

In all honesty, I haven't gotten a G CPU to work on a 6 series mainboard yet, P67 or Z68 B3/G3 if they were on the CPU supported list or otherwise. Just plain bad luck? Well, possibly.
If you have a 2400, 2500/2500k, or 2600/2600k available, test with that, the mainboard may be perfectly fine with one of those.

  • MSI H61M-P21 no eSata found

I recently bought an MSI H61M-P21 board. Set it up with:
SATA Velociraptor 150 GB as boot disk with Windows 7 Ultimate
SATA WD Green 1 TB as data
both connected directly to the mobo
The configuration of the HDs in the BIOS is set to IDE. I'm using BIOS rev H00 (E7680IMS.H00), which originally came with the motherbard.
I tried to plug an eSATA external drive for backup, but Windows didn't recognize it.
I was using either an internal card reader with an eSATA port, or the bracket that came with the hard drive enclosure, which I attached to the SATA port of the motherboard.
I thought a BIOS update would allow me to do that.
I flashed up to rev H10.
    Still had the same problems.
I looked on forums and some people were recommending to use AHCI, which BIOS rev H00 didn't support (it was either IDE or Disabled).
So after updating to H10, I changed the drives to use AHCI.  I had to reinstall Windows 7 because I was using IDE.
Anyway, after starting Windows, plugged the drive to the eSATA port... nothing.
I decided to update to the last BIOS rev. H20
    Same results.
Furthermore, BIOS H10 and H20 gave me problems. After resetting the computer, the date and time will return to the date and time of the BIOS creation, not holding the current date and time.
I went back to BIOS H00 and everything works fine, except for the original eSATA problem.
Of course, I had to set my hard drives back to IDE instead of AHCI.
    Now here's something even stranger.
I realized I don't need AHCI to recognize the external hard drive through eSATA.
Even if I use IDE in the BIOS, the ONLY way to get the external disk to be recognized is to have it powered on and plugged in BEFORE I turn on the computer.
I can access my files in Windows from the external drive.
BUT, if I turn the hard drive off and turn it back on, Windows won't recognize it again. I would have to restart the computer, with the external hard drive plugged in and turned on.
By the way, I made sure the timings for my RAM where all the same through BIOS rev H00, H10 and H20.
Not sure why H10 and H20 didn't hold the current times.
Motherboard battery is fine, if not, why does it save the time and date with rev H00?

  • MSI H61M-P21 (B3) - Won't start, how can I update the BIOS?

    Hello Everyone!
I just bought an MSI H61M-P21 (B3) Motherboard along with Intel Celeron G530 Sandy Bridge (2.4 GHz) and 1 DIMM of 4GB DDR3 1600 KingMax. I use NJOY 500W true power as power supply. The system starts but no image, no beep code, nothing... Testet with another DIMM of RAM (4GB DDR3 1333 KingMax), but no luck. Tested with another power supply (450w true power), no luck again. I have tested the motherboard out of case, put on an antistatic surface, no luck... Reset CMOS, same situation: no image, no beepcodes...  On the Main BIOS Chip of the motherboard is a little sticker on which is written "E7680IMSH30" - i guess that the motherboard comes 'shipped' with 7680vH3 BIOS.
Is there a possibility to update the bios without replacing the CPU or send the board to RMA? I'm almost sure that the problem is around here...
Thanks in advance! Any answer is welcome!
P.S.: I appologise for my bad english.

    Good morning.
I've tested the motherboard this weekend with another DIMM of 4GB DDR3 1333, ThermalTake PSU (500W, i don't remember the model) and Core i3-2120 CPU - those components were taken from another IDENTICAL motherboard H61M-P21 (B3) with same version of BIOS. Didn't worked... I have tested my Celeron CPU G530 on the functional H61M-P21 (B3) and it's working...
So, there is a problem with my mainboard, i will send it to warranty.
Thanks a lot. Have a nice day!

  • Problem MSI H61M-P21 and GTX 670

I bought a motherboard MSI H61M-P21 however it does not recognize my GeForce GTX 670 but recognizes other video cards and the video card works on other motherboards. My power supply is sufficient for the PC.

I bought the motherboard and processor mentioned above but when I turned on the pc it was not starting (turn on for a few seconds and restarted infinitely), returned the motherboard to the shop they "upgraded" and sent me back and then pc work normal (except for this problem with vga) and the BIOS version when come back to me was 19.0. I don't know what was the version before this, because I can't start the PC.

  • MOVED: MSI H61M-P21 (B3) Motherboard - are these beeps normal?

This topic has been moved to Intel Core-iX boards.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=158223.0

I figured out the issue. some MSI boards, apparently, give a beep for each usb device plugged into the computer. Once I removed all usb devices, I was left with 2 beeps and a high pitched beep. I've run across a couple places on the Internet of people who have the same issue (2 beeps and a higher beep). One person left it because everything was working on his computer. He updated the forum about a year later saying everything was still working. Another person RMA'd his CPU and that ended up getting rid of the final 3 beeps. So apparently it's a CPU related issue. I'm just frustrated no one from MSI has verified this information, and confused why they would implement something like that (the usb beep count) when that's usually a sign that BIOS didn't POST correctly. At least I presume it's MSI's doing, I haven't come across any other boards that do this, although to be fair I was looking for MSI specific information to match my mainboard.
Although thank you for the recent publication of AMI beep codes. I was only able to find the very dated one.

  • MSI h61m-p21 has overclocking option but its not working

hi msi i have h61m-21 and even it has oc option in bios but its not letting me set my ram to 1600 i have 1600 fsb ram please help.

You think you need 1600. What do you need it for?
    Please read this: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=147704.0
If you still believe that 1600 will make a noteworthy difference, then unfortunately you will have to consider a board with a different chipset. The mem controller is part of the CPU which cannot be overclocked on this chipset.
i know that all but my stupid friend wants it to run at 1600

  • H61M-P21 B3 Constant Beeping, Won't POST

So basically when I start my computer, I get a constant error beeping going, with a couple short beeps at the very start, and then back to just the constant beeping. I can see a little flashing underscore on the top left of my screen, and it switches between the numbers 98 and 99 on the bottom right. After about 20 seconds, I get even more beeps thrown into the already constant beeping for a second, and then they stop and it goes back to continuous beeping. I then also get 92, A2, A3, and A4 errors on the bottom right. It doesn't POST. It will just sit there constantly beeping with a A3 at the bottom right.
I should also add that the power is always on whenever power is plugged in. Not sure why this is happening either. The only way to shut the motherboard all the way off is to unplug the power cord or turn off the PSU.
    My specs are as follows:
    Core i3 2120 CPU
    MSI H61M-P21 B3 Motherboard
    G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM
Diamond HD Radeon 6770 1GB GPU
Seagate 250 GB SATA 7200 RPM HD
    ASUS SATA DVD-RW Drive
Thermaltake Purepower 2.0 600 Watt PSU
I previously had a ASRock board that wouldn't detect my video card, or any others I had here to try, so I bought this one. With the ASRock board, I could boot to Windows just fine with onboard video, so I think everything is working fine.
    Things I have tried:
    Resetting CMOS
Trying each stick of RAM separately
Using onboard GPU (same exact errors)
    Trying different monitors
I'm out of ideas, and I'm not even sure if I can take the board back. Any help is greatly appreciated!

It has completed POST when you get to the A3 code. AA is the one that is shown once in the OS. Those aren't errors, just the normal progression codes thru the POST process.
A3 it's now looking for the OS. You can't migrate the OS from another system & expect it to work in the new one. Also, did you install the OS in AHCI? Then you must have the SATA controller set to AHCI & not in IDE mode.
Added: What keyboard & mouse are used? F-Lock on the keyboard enabled? How many USB devices or add-in cards are being used?

  • MSI H61M-P23 (B3) - Failed BIOS Update, PC Won't Boot

I attempted to update the BIOS on my MSI H61M-P23 motherboard and the update failed.  Attempted to reboot the PC and no longer have access to the BIOS and the PC does not boot.  Additionally, there are two short beeps in POST.  Any suggestions on resolving this issue?

I don't recall what the old BIOS version was, but whatever the newest version that's available for download from MSI is what I attempted to flash.  I ran the BIOS update in Windows and my PC froze for over an hour and wouldn't respond, so I powered it down and went to power it back up and now I get a blank screen and two beeps in POST.
which version exactly you tried to update?

  • No Post or boot with MSi 5700le on MSI k8m800

As title says, while card is in system doesnt post or boot up.. I am currently using an older card of mine. hercules 32MB MX400, as a control card, and with it installed, I was able to install Windows MCE. The MSI 5700LE came from my other system, MSI PT880 board with intel 3.2. The funny thing is that I moved alot of my setup into this new computer system, the RAM, Hard drive, and cd-rom. Only things different are case, PSU, and processor as I am trying to build more thermally efficient computer.
The variables, I have deduced problem too
*Power supply, using stock Silverstone 240W PSU. (But I am using Turion 35W CPU, so I figure I am not over taxing cpu. I can cross check this with my old systems PSU) And people are running prescott intels of this unit.
*Motherboard K8M800 has built-in video and unfamiliar bios options so I may be missing something. But as applies to my only other thought: The AGP riser card that is used by this case, but I am able to use an old video card of mine with no problems.. So that eliminates the riser card.
So can someone point me a right direction on this issue, or present me with more options to test the system against. As you can tell I have spent sometime working on this and taking over kitchen with 2 fully disassembled computers.
    Thanks
    Travis

So you are saying there is an option for on-board video, for it to be turned off..?
Yes, I am thinking my next experiment will include using my old PSU, to try and power new setup. I got the case second-hand so it might be damaged..
    Thanks

"So you are saying there is an option for on-board video, for it to be turned off..? "
maybe, maybe not. but that isn't important part. you need to setup from BIOS which one to be your 1st VGA device.(onboard or external one)

Yup. That would probably work. I don't know. Not sounding good. Is there a reasonable priced pc shop in your area that has an SPI flash programming device that could flash the chip for you?

  • Do I need to Update my Bios for H61m-p21?

Hi I'm planning on buying the Gigabyte Windforce GTX 760 by January. I use a h61m-p21 motherboard. In order to use the gpu, would I need to update my motherboard's bios? I really don't feel up to it cause it seems like such a hassle.

Attached is the most recent mass production release.
    >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<
Download the attached archive to your desktop and insert a fat32 formatted usb stick.
    (Do not decompress the archive)
Start the forum flash tool and select option1 then point it at the downloaded compressed archive.
Then point it at the usb stick.
When complete boot to the USB stick and follow the on screen prompts.
You will need to re-install the intel chipset and ME drivers when complete.

Recently purchased a MSI G31TM-P21 and a Celeron e3400 wolfdale.  The board is listed as supporting this cpu but on newegg I found a review stating that there was a problem with this cpu and the bios resulting in a bios flash to resolve the problem.  Is this still a problem to anyones knowledge? And if so how can i flash the bios to get these two components to work together?  Thank you in advance.

So long as the motherboard's BIOS is updated to version 4.5 it will work fine. >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<

  • No Posting or Booting (K7N2), Please Help

So my friend and I each order the same mobo/processor and we're hanging out installing them.
    MSI K7N2 ILSR
    Athlon XP 3000
We both get to the point of trying to boot up and neither one of us can even post, let alone boot.  Turns out, his system had ram in DIMM3 and when he moved it out, he booted just fine.
However, my RAM was in DIMM1&2.  NO matter what 2 banks I use, or even if I try just one stick, I still can't post or boot.  I just get a "NO SIGNAL" on the monitor.
I've tried it on 3 monitors and get the same thing.
I've tried my video card in 2 other PC's and it works.
I've tried other video cards in the system and still no boot or post.
I've tried using different RAM, nothing.
I've tested my RAM IN different systems and it works.
So I can eliminate the RAM, the Video Card and the Monitor.  I'm wondering if my AGP slot is bad or maybe the processor doesnt work.  I need input on this.
I've already tried clearing the CMOS and I've already tried switching the jumpers around to safe mode (100mhz).  Any help is greatly appreciated.
    ***EDIT***
Upon further inspection of the D Bracket lights (top 2 red, bottom 2 green) the manual suggests the processor is bad or not seated properly.  I've reseated it and the lights are in same configuration.  So I'll be getting an RMA and return the processor for a new one.  I ordered from same place, so I'll likely have them replace the board, RAM, Processor, and Cooling Fan.  I'm sure that will take me at least a week to get.  Sigh.
