MSI Hawk HD5770 Crossfire voltage/overclocking problems.

Hi everyone. This is my first post ever on a technical forum.
I've been playing around with the MSI Hawk 5770 video cards recently and I have some questions/concerns. I am running the new Catalyst 10.4 drivers without CCC installed and overclocking using MSI Afterburner. I have voltage altering unlocked (I think: Unlock voltage control checked in the properties and changed in the .cfg file) and have been able to overclock the cards to 950/1250 on stock voltages. I run Kombuster to test stability and I'm wondering, does GPU-Z read voltages correctly for these cards? No matter what I set the voltage to, GPU-Z reads 1.000v in the sensor tab.
I've been unable to break 1290MHz memory clock speeds and I'm not sure if it's because the cards I have just can't go higher or if the voltages aren't changing appropriately. When I set the memory clock to 1300 or higher, my system will freeze/hang (not crash mind you) within 5 seconds to 3 minutes of running Kombuster.
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

Clarification: When the freezes/hangs happen, there is not a temperature problem. Haven't seen temps above 72C during stress tests and nothing over ~70C before a freeze/hang.

I had overclocked my Ti-4200 to 285MHz Core and 585MHz RAMDAC using the coolbits registry key (boot settings). Everything worked fine for about a month, I have ran several 3DMark tests (mostly 2003) and many "heavy" games (Doom 3, Far Cry, HL2, Warhammer:DOW, etc) and no problems occured (crashes or weird graphics). The 3DMark 2003 score from 1500 now is 1700 and I am (was) quite happy about it. Yesterday I removed the 512 Ram and re-installed it after a while (had to remove the card also) and the PC, without having any problems at all (I was playing Dungeon Siege a few hours ago) suddenly, while in BIOS and DOS, the screen is filled with white dots (looks like Pac-Man    ) and while loading the XP logo I see thin vertical lines (red and yellow) and then the monitor closes while the PC still works. I tried running in safe mode, it loaded but I still had these lines on the screen. I removed the DVD-ROM and the WD HDD just in case (350W PSU) but still had the same story. I installed a Club 3D Radeon 9600 Pro 256 MB and everything worked fine. I didn't install any Catalyst Drivers, I removed the coolbits from the registry and the NVidia drivers, re-installed the Ti-4200 and still I have the same problem. The card looks fine, no broken pins or anything. I also thought about a virus but this can't be, I triple-checked everything I installed and no viruses were found (and the Radeon worked).
I fear the overclocking was not so good after all but I can't be sure.
    Any ideas?
    Thanx in advance.

Proves a theory im made at least, MSI makes cheap / fault video ram, your card is a gonner pretty much, those vertical lines and monitor shuitting down are known as screen corruptions that occur when the video ram is fried (in most cases), did you overclock it by 10%? Im wondering if you can RMA a card since MSI does guarentee 10% overclock on some cards so I here but I cant be sure, someone else needs to answer that question as for MSI, if your going to overclock, dont buy from them, Im quite peeved at MSI because the memory on their cards cant even handle stock speeds let alone overclocked ones.

  • MSI Hawk- AMD HD R5770 -Problem,Crash when Gaming

    Hi i have a msi hawk 5770 1gb and when i playing games it crashes with a black,-grey screen!But if i downclock from 875 to 775 it works fine,the tempartures are the same (875-775) idle 38,gaming 62max..
    System Specs
    Intel core 2 duo e6850 3.00ghz
    4gb 800mhz ram
    psu thermaltake 500
    mobo msi p45 ct51

    1) Remove current graphics card drivers, run >>Driver Sweeper<<, reboot and install latest drivers from AMD's website. Try the drivers from MSI's website too.
    2) Test the card with >>MSI Kombustor<<.
    3) Test with a better power supply.
    4) Test the card in another computer.
Does it happen in all games?

  • MSI Hawk appears to be factory overclocked to "Talon Attack" specs

I just received a new MSI Hawk card (not the Talon Attack) and after installing the AfterBurner 2.0 app I was surprised to see the following:
    Core clock: 811
    Shader clock: 1622
    Memory clock: 1950
Again, the box it came in says plain ol' MSI Hawk, the label on the card says the same, but it's not the expected factory OC settings for this card. Hitting reset on the AB2 doesn't change anything either. Not that I'm complaining but I'm wondering which if any of the following is the case:
1: MSI is shipping standard MSI Hawks with the new faster memory and default OC (hopefully)
    2. The card was programmed wrong.
    3. MSI ran out of regular cards so shipped the Talon Attack card as a plain Hawk card.
    4. The AB2 app is confused as to which version of the card I have (most likely) - apparently the EAN#s are identical too.
    5. The latest Oct release Nvidia driver is confusing the app.
Is there any way to verify which card I have or another app that would verify the factory OC?

    YEEEEEEEEEEE HAAAAAAAAAA!!!
We have Hynix chips, so it is a Talon afterall! Cool. Wonder if I'm just lucky this week or if this is what is being shipped out on the standard cards. It'll be interesting to see if anybody else gets one like this.
Well I'm thinking of getting a hawk(£22.00 cheaper @scan)  where did you order yours from ?

  • My Radeon 5770 Hawk is getting pitiful overclocks

I bought a 5770 hawk so I could overclock it far. But, my card barely overclocks. Is this normal? The core can only get up to 910MHz stably on stock voltages. The stock clocks for the card is 875MHz. Is this normal? I can overvolt it to 1.25v and get up to 945MHz, but when people overvolt it that high, they normally get to 1GHz, and those are on the normal reference models. The Hawk is supposed to overclock like crazy.
The stock voltages of the card also seem to be higher than most cards, it is at 1.2v instead of the normal 1.125v that I usually see for most 5770s.  I tried to put the clock and voltage settings back to reference levels(850MHz/1200MHz @ 1.125v) and it wasn't stable under OCCT. Does this mean anything? If my gpu isn't stable under reference clock rates, no wonder it can barely overclock.
Can there be something wrong with my mobo or psu or something preventing higher overclocks? I'm using OCCT with error checking enabled to check the overclocks. Can that be a reason why it is not getting as high? Most people only use Furmark and visually check for errors, even though when you do that you easily can miss dozens of errors that are not visible to the human eye.

I know a lot of people are going to give me hell about my psu, since I have recieved hell about it many times in the past on internet forums, but just to let you guys know, I closely calculated everything, looked up tons of articles, and spent weeks looking into it before I made my purchase and I'm 100% sure that my psu can easily handle my system.
My system is a Dell Studio XPS 435MT.
    It comes with
    i7 920
    4GB DDR3 RAM
    1 640GB HDD
    ATi Radeon 4850
    1 DVD drive
    1 Case Fan
    360 Watt Delta Inc PSU
Before you goes go in on the Delta brand of the psu. Rest assure that they make quality units. They are the guys who make Antecs Earthwatts PSUs and their Signature psus. And they also make a lot of psus for companies like Dell. Johnny Guru reviewed a few Delta psus and he says that they make quality units. The psus they make for antec Earthwatts line are better than the PSUs Seasonic made for Antec.
Now the psu has lasted for over a year with the Radeon 4850. The radeon 4850 nearly 50% more energy than the 5770 Hawk
    http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/HD_5770_HAWK/28.html
These results have also been confirmed with various other Radeon 5770 cards from many other review sites. So if it works with the 4850 for hundreds of thousands of people with the same Dell model, it will work for the 5770 which consumes a lot less energy. Other people with the same Dell model have said that their systems used only up to 290Watts when under full complete load, and this is with the 4850 that draws way more energy than my 5770. And they measured their energy from the wall sockets which means that the actual energy the psu is supplying is less since you have to factor in psu efficiency. My system despite the unusally small psu is more than enough to power my system.
My power supply can supply 15amps on the 12v1 rail and 16 on the 12v2 rail. It can supply a max of 300Watts or 25amps when both are being pulled from at the same time. Under a normal game the 5770 uses 6.66 amps from the 12v rails, and under Furmark it uses 9 amps. My psu can supply more than enough energy to my gpu even with the i7 which uses up to 10 amps from the 12v rails.
Now, when overclock, energy usage increases. Yes that is true but it only goes up a relatively small amount.
    http://forums.atomicmpc.com.au/index.php?showtopic=264
With a 6% increase in clock rate, power consumption goes up by only 4%(When not overvolting). This can also be confirmed by many other review sites. Overvolting does increase power consumption by a large amount if you overvolt too much, especially in conjunction with overclocking.
    http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/gpu-power-consumption-2010_4.html#sect0
    http://ht4u.net/reviews/2009/power_consumption_graphics/index11.php
But if you be easy on the overvolting, you can overvolt and not raise the power consumption through the roof.
I will never overvolt my gpu above .05 higher than the stock. I was able to overvolt my 5770 from 1.2 to 1.25v. That is around a 4% increase in voltage.
    http://forums.techpowerup.com/showpost.php?p=1858205&postcount=1
This also shows that the power usage of a system with a 5770 doesn't go above even 250Watts when running OCCT, and this is when overvolted and overclocked a lot.
The only way for my system to even come close to 80% capacity of my psu, I'd need to be running Prime 95, and OCCT at the same time, and even then my system can handle that just fine. I've run occt for a long amount of time and I didn't get any power issues.

You're going to need to raise the voltage to at least 1037mv, probably even to 1050mv. I have my 560 Ti Gold Ed at 1050mv.
Hello,  thanks, hmm but right now my videocard it is at 1037mv and  the core is at 1Ghz, memory 2300mhz, with no problem.    It's very stable i run some benchmarks .., but my only problem is  FPS..,  they seem almost the same :/

Overclocking Problems on K8N Neo Plat

As I had said that even when HTT is set 200 and memory divider used is 1:1 on my Corsair XMS (which was plugged in in my nF4 SLi mobo and has TCCD Ram chips) which is rated 2-2-2-5 at 200Mhz DDR and processor at stock speeds and voltage, memtest shows errors and system doesn't boots in windows.
Also my Ram sticks are rated 2.60V but when Vdimm set at auto Motherboard pumps 2.70V !! what's the problem , I use version 1.7 BIOS on my MSI K8N Neo Platinum
Is that going to harm my RAM

You mention you upgrade to a new mobo but then did you did a fresh install of your OS in your hard disk? Alternatively stop overclocking for the time being and run everything in default and see whether the problem goes away
Yes, of course that I reinstall windwos. Hard disk was formated. I try to disable overclock but nothing change.

This mobo is good but its false advertisment to call it overclock friendly.
People are having problems getting ther FSB over 220 and this is a overclocking mobo.
MSI K8N SLI PLATINUM (really disappointed over the mobo)
POINT OF VIEW GEFORCE 6800ULTRA @450/1300  (Really good)
    Crusial ballistiX PC4000 (Great memory)
Aspire 520watt 35amp (strong as hell)
Dear Friend don't get angry too quickly. I also have a socket 939 Athlon 3000+ Winchester. In start MSI K8N SLI Platinum was not allowing me to OC more than 220FSB in BIOS. Although in Windows I can OC it to 2.16 GHZ with NVidia NTune. It's 240FSB. You are facing the same problem that I was facing. Its 219MHZ Bug for Winchester CPUs.
All you need to do is when you are OC'ing more than 219 MHZ, just set you HT multiplier to 1x and you can go upto 260MHZ FSB via BIOS. When you get to the desktop of windows use any software to set the multiplier back to 4x or 5x (depends on how much you OC). Nvidia Ntune is a good software for this purpose. Plz keep in mind that Winchester cores are not too much overclocking friendly CPUs. They won't go beyond 2.4 GHZ and instability is bound to happen after 2.3 GHZ.

  • GTX 460 (MSI HAWK) dead? On-board LED explanation?

    Hi,
I purchased an MSI HAWK (GeForce GTX 460) graphics card back in 2011 and it appears to have died. Windows no longer detects it (although I was able to get it working briefly after booting into Windows using the on-board Intel graphics, but cannot repeat). If I remember correctly, the LEDs on the bottom of the card used to cycle through a particular pattern. Now, only the first two LEDs (that is, the LEDs furthest away from the PCI-X slot) remain constantly on.
I'm not quite sure how to trouble shoot this problem. I will try later to see if I can put it into a different PCI-X slot but I don't think there is any extra room in my motherboard. Has anyone experienced this problem? Is there an explanation somewhere of the LED status codes?
    Thanks!

The LEDs are just indicating active phases. They do not show codes. Give us some infos about the rest of the system: >>Posting Guide<<

KT333 Ultra; fuzzy logic, 1.6xp overclocking problem help !!!!!

Not that I am an expert o/c but here are some thoughts on the matter.
My comments are based on my experiences of the KT3 Ultra2 which is basically the same as the Ultra version.
This mobo does not have the ability to lock the PCI/AGP bus freely from the FSB. However, it does have dividers. At 133 a 1/4 divider kicks in. Above 152FSB the 1/5 divider works, so that at 166 the PCI & AGP buses will be back in sync. If you are o/c your cpu, don't go from 133 to 145, etc since you will be running the PCI/AGP buses further out of whack. Just go to either the mid 150's or to 166 in one jump. The other problem / issue relates to your cpu. From what you say you have one of the old Palominos which are not great o/c's. I would personally o/c your cpu from the BIOS rather than 'Fluffy Logic' which I would tend to stay away from.
With a 166FSB cpu a very stable o/c would be 175-177 beyond 180 gets decidedly tricky.
    Hope this helps
