MSI K7D master L and Linux

I just recently got a K7D master L and I have been doing some research on the mainboard while waiting for the ECC DDR memmory to arrive.  During my research, I found a series of messages to the kernel.org mailing list that concerned a 'southbridge' problem with the K7D when using a USB/serial mouse instead of a PS/2 mouse ( I only have USB mice now, but i do have the little green adapter to make them PS/2 )
My question regards the progress in correcting the issue(s), which i understand is(are) an AMD 760 MPX problem.
Is there a patch or BIOS update that can work around or correct this issue in the works?
-sb

Looks like I may have found my answer here in the AMD errata.

Multiprocessor System May Hang While in FULL APIC Mode and IOAPIC Interrupt is Masked
Products Affected. B1, B2
Normal Specified Operation. The AMD-768 peripheral bus controller is designed to support FULL APIC mode in multiprocessor systems for system management events. If an interrupt is masked in the APIC controller of the AMD-768, then the corresponding interrupt message should not be sent to the processor via the 3-wire APIC bus.
Non-conformance. The AMD-768 peripheral bus controller will send an interrupt message via the 3-wire
APIC bus regardless if the interrupt is masked or not.
Potential Effect on System. Since the processor had previously masked the APIC interrupt, it is not
expecting to receive future APIC messages for the masked interrupt. The APIC controller will continuously send the interrupt message via the 3-wire bus until a processor accepts the message, causing the system to hang.
A system hang has been observed when executing a server shutdown command in Novell Netware versions 5.0 or 5.1 while using a serial mouse. During the server shutdown sequence, software writes an invalid CPU ID to the IOAPIC redirection table, and the system does not complete the shutdown.
Note:[/i] No failure has been observed when using a PS/2 mouse.
Suggested Workaround. None.
Resolution Status: No fix planned.

  • Problems with Promise SX6000 and MSI K7D Master

There is a problem with Promise SuperTrack SX6000 controller and motheboard MSI K7D Master.
We use most fresh bios for both products - version 1.5 for motheboard and build 77 for controller.
With previous controller's bios version it can't be initialize and now after initialisation the bios of controller does not show up.
It seems to be like one of problems wich are described in controller's manual, but this problem can't be decided by user's hand, but only new version of bios, we think.
    What you can help ?

    No ways ?

I think Wxp pro, 2 processors & mouseware from Logitech are not good combination!
Logitech: I won’t buy anything from them again, the box the mouse came in has a legend telling you: over 10 million Cordless mice Sold!! (Yeah, that´s right for uni processor machines, maybe)
I ´m still learning things about my dual processor machines: they do not like everything that is designed for uniprocessor machines!!!
A dual processor machine is something fast, more than one processor has to be better in many aspects. But again, not everything is designed for a dual processor machine.
Does anyone know how to back up your profile in  Wxp pro????
    Any comments are welcomed!!!

Before Installing CD drivers you should always check to see if later drivers are available.  The 9.6x drivers have been out for ages so go and try them.

  • MSI K7D Master-L & 3ware 7506-4LP boot hang

I recently purchased a 3ware Escalade 7506-4LP RAID Controller (IDE, 4 ports - see product info here) for use with my MSI K7D Master-L (MSI-6501-030 - see product info here) to replace my Promise FastTrak100 TX4. On boot, the system POSTs fine, and then freezes solid at the point at which it should load the BIOS for the 3ware controller. I get nothing but a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left hand corner, and a hard reset (CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't work) is required to to reset the machine. The diagnostic LEDs on the motherboard indicate it's freezing at the point where it is "Initializing IDE controller".
    What I have tried:
    - Verified BIOS on RAID card was latest version (1.08.00.048)
    - Removed all PCI cards (except for RAID controller and video card)
    - Adding 33 MHz PCI cards to 64/66 PCI slot to slow down bus
    - Tried RAID controller in each PCI slot
    - Flashed the motherboard BIOS to 3 different versions, 1.91, 1.82, and 1.5 (which the motherboard was validated for use with this card on - see here)
    - Tried various BIOS settings (ACPI on/off, PCI Latency, etc)
    - Disabled all onboard devices (sound, ide, fdc, serial, parallel, etc.)
    - Detached all drives from card
    - Tested card in another computer to verify it works - it does.
I have noticed some people on this forum have had similar problems with SCSI or RAID cards:
http://forums.2cpu.com/showindex.php?threadid=39696 The first post in this thread describes the problem I'm having almost exactly.

  • MSI K7D Master

    Hi!
I've a friend who has a MSI K7D Master and it doesn't boot.
Probably he give me that mother board.
Since he bought it as stock, he has no warranty.
Is it still possible to get RMA?
How much do I have to pay for replacement?
    I'm from Italy.
    Bye

You need to contact Tech Support via calling them in your region or emailing from the main website...

  • MSI K7D Master L - CRC Problem

    Hey gang.
I've been having some CRC troubles with my MSI K7D Master L.  On most occasions, I cannot perform an install from either of the cd drives--eventually a CRC error will pop up.  In addition, data on the hard disks (i.e. registry settings) dissapear or are corrupted.  Which sucks.  ...and you can imagine how my slightly corrupted windows install is performing :(.  ?(
    Here's my specs:
-AMD MB 2800+ Barton (Only one CPU installed right now)
    -1024 mb of Kensington ram
    -ATI 9700 Pro
-Bios Version 1.3 (latest bios for Master L)
    -Enermax 431watt power supply
-Creative Audigy Sound card (onboard sound disabled)
Just for reference, I've ran all the diagnostics (memtest86, and that IBM hard disk checker) and no problems show up.  Only the motherboard and processor are new... all of the components, cables, drives, etc. were working well before I poped in the new MB.  Of course, I started fresh with a clean formatted drive for my windows install.
I've heard that my Enermax 431 is about a 10 on the blows-O-meter.  Could this be the problem?  I realize that my new AMD 2800MP is prolly pulling out a bit more juice than before.
I love this motherboard, and I know that CRC errors are pretty rare on the K7D (cough, unlike some other MBs), I'd hate to have to RMA it.
    Thanks in advance ,
    JonnyLongTorso

Replaced the Enermax 431 supply with an Antec 550 watt unit.  Still getting the errors.
    Any ideas?

  • MSI K7D Master AMD Dual Athlon MP

OK so I've completed my first Dual Athlon and I'm getting some varied results. here's the specs:
MSI K7D Master AMD Dual Athlon MP Motherboard ATX
    Dual 2400+
    Antec 350W
    various NVIDIA video cards
    Kingston 266/512 64X64 DDR
I first tried a Wildcat 5110 but got no video, 3DLabs tells me this mobo has not been tested and cleared by them, so heads-up don't go with this mobo/video combo.
I went to NVIDIA and got video, I set the system jumper to 133MHz. I got a RAM error, change sticks (I have several of the same kind) but get the same result. After several attempts the machine boots and I install WinXP.
Now it is hit and miss sometimes I get the RAM error and the machine just sits there, sometimes it boots but the mouse doesn't work other times it seems to boot fine but the programs (3D Studio Max / Brazil) will just quit for no apparent reason. I set the BIOS to to check the RAM on start-up, it finds no errors.
I really appreciate hearing any ides or from anyone who has attempted this sort of thing before.
    Liquidman

    Very cool thank you.
Well I got a call back from MSI customer service, they said try going to 'Advanced chipset' and change the 'AGP Fastload' from whatever it is to the opposite state (enable vs disable) I think the default is enable. I tried that, but it was the same if not worse. I reset the BIOS, set the fsb to 100MHz flipped the 'AGP Fastload' and that, of all things worked. Giving credit to the cs department - it did not work without changeing the Fastload state.
I got the 3DS Max/serverrunning and here are some statistics:
Rendered with Brazil, tons pf polygons, reflection and refraction.
    Athlon 2500XP (non-Barton) 1gig unbuffered MSI KM4M:
3 hours 15 minutes per frame.
    Intel P4 2.4 533MHz fsb 1 gig unbuffered MSI 845GE (northwood)
2 hours 54 minutes minutes per frame.
    K7D Master 100Mhz fsb (non-Barton) 1gig unbuffered value ram.
1 hour 15 minutes per frame.
I will try the ecc registered RAM next week. If the results are this good with the jumper set to 100MHz I really looking forward to checking out the 133MHz...
    Any suggestions on brand/configuration ?

  • RAM type for MSI K7D Master?

    Hello,
I am looking to purchase the K7D Master and I was wondering what kind of RAM to purchase for it. Can I use PC2700 DDR or will that just waste my money considering the clock speed of the board is 266MHz and the clock speed of PC2700 is 333MHz.
    TIA

I just read in this thread that someone made the XMS memory work in the K7D Master L. Check out this thread:K7D Master L MPX boot issue
Too bad I did not know how to make it work 4 weeks ago...  ;(

  • K7D Master Freezing in several Linux Distros and Kernels

It seems that no matter what I do, I can not get linux to function correctly in SMP on my box. It works fine in single processor mode. The only non-user caused problem is that the box freezes in SMP mode somewhat intermittantly . It will freeze for quite some time, then when it gets going again, it works fine for a while, then freezes again. I have tried to get it to duplicate when I am doing things, but there doesn't seem to be anything specific that sets it off.
I have tried to change the SMP mode in bios to no avail..
I have used several different distros including Mandrake, Redhat, and SuSe. I have gotten the latest SMP kernel to no avail. The box works fine in XP Pro, and is just OK in 2K (It is a bit slow and choppy till I get SP3 on for some reason... Oh well...). It works great in any distro of linux in single mode, but SMP just won't work.
    Specs:
    1X MSI K7D Master
    1X Leadtek GeForce 3TD AGP
    2X AMD Athlon MP 1900+
    1X Crucial 512MB Registered DDR Dimm (PC2100)
1X Creative Labs SB Audigy Gamer
    1X Plextor 16/10/40 CDRW
    1X Toshiba 16X DVD
    1X Antec 400W PS
If you need more information, please email me or just post here... I will check fairly often as this is getting to be quite annoying now, and I can't seem to figure it out.

Did that one too... Should have mentioned that in my first post...

I had it on checking only... Changed to scrub... Didn't change a whole lot though. I guess it was worth a try though.
    >>
Still freezes... Had Scrub enabled... still freezes... I also threw in a stick of Corsair registered and it does the same thing. I also switched CPU positions on an off chance, and that didn't help.
I am beginning to wonder if I have a bad board. The only thing that keeps me from thinking that is that it works with XP and 2K just fine.
Thanx for the suggestions, if you can think of anything else please post it. I am getting desperate.

  • K7D Master and the onboard audio.

Hello, Im new here but not new to the PC scene.  I just purchased the above mentioned mobo for my game/file server and its running fantastic.  But I cant get the ac97amd.inf file to install correctly. I cant get the onboard audio working at all, I install the exe installer and reboot when asked.  Apon reboot the sound card still isnt installed and I cant find that inf file anywhere on the pc at all.  I saw this mentioned once on these forums from doing a search but there was no clear answer as too how the person got it working.
    Ill list the specs below:
    2 AMD MP 2200+
    1 MSI K7D Master mobo
1gb of PC2700 DDR ECC Samsung Ram
    1 WD 8mb 40gb HD for the O/S
1 Maxtor 8mb 120gb for files (on promise card)
1 Maxtor 8mb 80gb HD for games (on promise card)
1 Promise ata/133 PCI controller card
    1 Lite On 54x CDROM
    1 GF2mx 200 video card
    400w Antec PSU
So is there a trick to getting this working? I have tried the supplied driver on the cd, 1 from msi's website & 1 from amd's website w/ none of them working at all.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My on-board sound works fine...but i have it disabled for obvious reasons, (better audio via a sound card). I cant recall how I installed it, but it may need to be installed in a specific order like chipset then audio then whatever else...i cant remember but i know i had no problem at all installing it. Check out the manual, i know it has info on installing drivers in there.

The board that you're using is for server systems. These mobo's doesnt have overclocking potencial and options cause of the need for stability.
So don't try pushing it. Your board may be like this
