MSI K7N2 No longer able to boot up (Thinking PSU problem)

I have a computer that was a hand-me-down from my husband that he originally built 12 years ago.  Recently I've been having trouble turning on the computer.  I will hit the power button, hear the fans running, but nothing else will power on.  There are no hard-drive beeps, the keyboard and screen won't respond.  The mouse lights up, but is useless.
Before yesterday I could hit the restart button, or use the power button to turn it back off and back on to get the computer to boot up.  I would have to do this up to 8 times before it would catch, but eventually it would turn on.  Yesterday the computer was on when it reverted to just the fans running and nothing else.  I tried restarting it multiple times, but it never booted.  I opened it up, cleaned the mountain of dust, checked all the connections and tried again.  After many restart attempts with no response aside from running fans I figured it was time to ask for help.
I think it is a power supply issue
Enlight Corporation HPC-340-101
+5V - 30A
+12V - 15A
+3.3V - 28A
340W
The power supply has never been replaced so it is 12 years old.
I have been considering building a new computer and was looking at this power supply:
Antec High Current Gamer Series HCG-750 750W ATX12V v2.3 / EPS12V v2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Certified 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC
Would this fry my old motherboard?  My husband said that was possible, so I'm hesitant to try.
Please let me know if I've done something wrong, or not provided enough information.  I will keep my computer opened up until I hear from someone so I can answer any questions if need be.  I've put my other computer specs in my signature.  Let's see if they actually post

So I tried my Mother-In-Law's PSU since my husband is over-protective of his computer.  No luck.  I took out the graphics card and it was pure luck that my husband remembered one of his siblings left an old computer in the spare room.  It had an old GeForce FX 5200 128Mb, so I salvaged it and it worked!  My computer booted up on the first try!  I had to switch back to my PSU as my Mother-In-Law is still using hers, but it still started up perfectly!  I am so excited!  Of course this means I don't have a valid reason to push for my new computer, and I probably can't play the Sims 3 anymore, but I still have a working computer
Thank you guys so much!

  • [Solved] No longer able to boot Kernel

Haven't been able to post this since I've been without internet for a time. Since the update requiring manual intervention on /etc/mtab (20th Dec, in the news feed) I have been unable to boot the kernel. Exact output is due to come (will have to try and boot it again then copy it down to get it) but the gist of it is that it can't find the modules, and so is not able to mount any partitions, dropping to an emergency shell.
I've tried using a livecd to access it, and can mount the partitions, but proc will not mount once chrooted into the environment, and without it mkinitcpio seems unable to detect any filesystems.
I suspect it's time for a reinstall because of this, but hope there's a fix that will save me the time and hassle of doing so.

    You have to mount /dev and /proc before chrooting. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Re … e_you_boot
Other topics about the mismatch between the version of the kernel and the modules seem to be cropping up recently on the forum. Perhaps you will find some answers to your problem in them.

  • Restart failed - no longer able to boot

I plugged a USB external DVD (as my B&W has only a CD-Rom) in order to install OS X. I was able to get to the OS X Welcome page, wher it ask to RESTART. As the RESTART did not work, I went to the startup disk select, saw the DVD with OS X, selected it, then clicked on RESTART from the Welcome screen of OS X.
Now, surprise : all I get is a dolder with a question mark (?) blinking. The Support online here says to go back and select another startup disk, which *of course* I cannot do!
I disconnected the DVD, retried many times, there is nothing to do.
Any insight or trick so I can restart this machine ?
    Thanks,

Check firmware (see link later in post)
This may sound like an involved solution but the USB ports come online too late in the boot sequence to use as boot device.
Instead, consider replacing CD drive with a new DVD burner. You can pick up a DVD+-RW for about $40-80 at any computer store. Or open the USB burner case you have and remove the drive.
Open your B&W (power down of course)
For a temporary work around, notice that there are 2 ATA cables on the motherboard. Unplug the chain to the optical/ZIP carrier. Plug any ATA 33/66/100 cable into the system board and your DVD drive. Make sure your optical drive is set to master (check jumper settings). There are several unused power connectors in a Yikes case, use any one.
Restart with your CURRENT OS. Check system profiler to verify drive. (Burning may not be supported fix that later by visiting http://patchburn.de and get Patchburn. It installs profiles for ANY burner not Apple OE.)
Now insert your install DVD, hit restart (don't change start up disk) and hold down "C". If your B&W doesn't boot to 10.4 DVD you can release the "C" and it will boot to original drive. If is doesn't boot to 10.4 check firmware updates
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
And seriously consider installing that cheap DVD drive in your B&W. The Yikes case is really easy to upgrade. And if you are brave you can turn that G3/400 (100 FSB) into a G3/472 (105 FSB)

  • My new WD hard drive is no longer able to boot. How do I fix this?

I got a WD10EALX Cabiar Blue drive last week and copied my existing internal drive that had Tiger OSX on it. It booted fine until I copied an iphoto library from a friend's Mac and now this disk won't boot. I get the circle with the slash through it and the folder with the question mark on it. I ran it through disk utility and it was verified with no problems. What should I do from here?
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1 TB,7200 RPM (WD10EALX) Hard Drive

Well, assuming you mean you repaired permissions in Disk Utility, and that you ONLY copied some data/media files, and didn't go beyond 85% full, I'd say go back to square one on this experiment.
A better approach is to leave or have an "OS only" boot drive, with apps of course, and keep data and media files on another disk drive - the beauty of having four internal hard drives.
By the sounds of it you are using an external drive too. That alone can sometimes be a problem.
As for "verify with Disk Utility" back in Tiger, I give it iffy grade and marks. Repair AND use Disk Warrior.

  • No longer able to boot - failure with /boot

I recently, due to a hard drive change, rebuilt my desktop.  Every now and again, since then, it hasn't booted.  I just logged into root and rebooted; figuring I'd sort it out at some point.
Only, now it won't boot at all.  When I go through journalctl -xb I get the following errors (the ellipsis, in case it isn't clear, indicate an number of lines with no error in between the error messages):
    Job dev-sda2.device/start timed out.
Timed out waiting for device dev-sda2.device.
    Dependency failed for /boot.
Dependency failed for Local File Systems.
    Triggering OnFailure= dependencies of local-fs.target.
Dependency failed for File System Check on /dev/sda2
and also, much later in the logs:
Failed at step EXEC spawning /bin/plymouth: No such file or directory
My initial assumption would have been that the relevant drive is failing, but I only recently ran a check on the drives (a few days ago and since the rebuild) and all was fine and dandy - but I had already been seeing these errors on a periodic basis.  Only now, as I said, they happen at every boot and I never get as far as login.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I ran the extended smartmontools test on the disk today and it returned with no errors.  However, the error log for the disk did contain the following:

Does this mean my disk is dying?  That would be very annoying after just rebuilding from another failed disk!

  • No longer able to boot into OSX

My Mac Mini will only boot to Windows XP (I realise this situation is not without some degree of irony).
Bootcamp has been installed for several months and I have had no problems booting between OSX and XP. I have not booted into XP recently only OSX and there have been no problems.
Today I booted up from a shutdown and found that my Mac Mini booted into XP. I wasn't too worried so went into the Boot Camp control panel and selected "Restart in OSX". As Windows was shutting down, I noticed that it was installing several updates. My Mac Mini proceeded to boot back into XP and continued to install the remaining components of whatever updates it had previously been installing.
So I repeated the Boot Camp control panel drill several times...each time, despite selecting to restart in OSX, it would restart in XP.
I then tried holding down the Option key and was duly presented with the two partitions - "Hard Drive" or "Windows"...I selected Hard Drive (i.e. OSX)...and the system booted into Windows! Repeated this exercise but this time trying the second partition (i.e. Windows)...and the system booted into Windows (as you would expect).
I have not done anything to the partitions/hard drive in recent months...the only thing I can think of is that I may have installed some Mac OSX updates earlier today...
Any assistance to help me boot back into OSX would be appreciated (I realise my worst case scenario is a reinstall).
    Thanks
    Darren

    Thanks Stefan.
I followed your instructions which did detect some errors in both the disk and permissins which I have repaired. I then reran the verify to check that there were no more errors. Following that I selected the Mac OSX startup volume and initiated a restart...it still boots into Windows!
Understanding how to use the repair features of the OSX DVD was useful but unfortunately I am still looking for a solution.
As a last effort, I tried rebooting while holding down the 'X' key...this did produce an onscreen log for a split second...from what I can make out in the short time it is onscreen...it appears to be trying to load the mac kernel and there is an error message saying "Read file failed: status"
Any further ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Darren

  • Mac Pro 2,1 Spontaneous Restart with No Boot - Power Supply PSU Problem?

One day I was working away on my Mac Pro 2,1 Quad Core 3.0 (2007) with 8 gb ram running Lion and it just shut itself off like someone pulled the power cord (but no one did of course). Then it attempted to restart, but wouldn't boot. Basically I haven't been able to use it since as I can't get the computer to stay on for any length of time.
I'm thinking its either the power supply or the, oh no, logic board.
Symptoms have been like this so far:
Initially I would get a chime and a boot start but then I would find the computer would shut itself off somewhere in the process and try to restart. Usually the next time I would get no chime and a horrible repeated clicking of my optical drive with a rythmic fan whirring up and down on the original ATI x1900 xt graphics card. I would have to manually power off with the power button to make it stop. Sometimes it would try to restart again anyway. The only way I could get a chime again was to unplug and wait (longer the better). But even if i got a chime and a start of a boot, invariably the computer would turn off again.
I couldn't boot from another source, I couldn't run apple hardware test, I couldn't run diagnostic,... it just wouldn't stay on to do it.
I hauled my mac pro (out of warranty) to the apple store genius bar and the problem presented itself, continuously. The gent was able to get fsck to work long enough to determine my hard drive was ok and said it was one of three things - the power supply, the graphics card, or the logic board. He said because the comp powered on and then shut off, and because there was intermittent chiming, he didn't think it was the power supply. He thought it was the graphics card and said I could leave my Mac for 10 days and they could take a looksy, or I could just install a new graphics card on my own.
I chose the latter, bought a ATI Radeon 5770 from the apple online store for $275 and installed it.
Problem persists.Exactly the same as before. Got initial chime, then next time no chime, optical drives clicking and graphics card fan whirring up and down rhythmically.
I had a touch of time to disconnect everything and I get a chime consistently now when I have my boot drive, graphics card, 4 gb ram, and monitor attached. (As well as wireless mouse, keyboard, trackpad). I even got to logon once only to have a prompt shut off and restart attempt. also I verified it was at least one optical drive clicking (when I removed them both) during these boot attempts.
The improvement in chiming seemed to be when I unseated one ram riser ( I have to with 2 x 2g ram modules each).
I also checked the diagnostic leds on the logic board and all was as it should be... says I got trickle power and rail power etc.
Is there anything else I can do to determine what's wrong? What do you guys think is wrong? Could it be bad RAM? Power Supply? Logic Board?
All your help is massively appreciated in advance!

Well I ran as many tests as I could with no definitive results to the point I would have to start buying replacement parts and testing that way. I opted to take it back to the apple store and they said it's (dun dun dun dunnnnn) the logic board.

I installed 6 operating systems on my pc (WinXp Home Edition Turkish/English,WinXP Pro Turkish/English,Win98 Turkish/English) and tested it, but every time i meet the same thing (MS Blue Screen Of Death Sux...).I checked the WinXP`s logs and searched for error code`s meaning from microsoft knowledge database. They are saying nothing about this problem but the problem`s root is coming from a bad device driver. It seems to be a generic problem for all operating systems cuz all of them were restarting themselves randomly, before i close "auto-restart on critical errors" option. After i saw some messages on forums , i searched for my RAM maker`s home page then i learned that my RAM is assembled with VIA KT Series and SIS chips & optimized for them. I think nForce is too picky about rams. But i aint sure about where the hell is this problem coming from. If you guys are sure about that is an unsupported ram problem and knew the list of ram marks&models that supported by MSI K7N2 Delta -L ,please help me about this damn problem. Thanks for your help.
Note : I tried Asus Ati Radeon 9200SE 64mb g.adapter (some peoples told me thats about g.adapter), but problem continued.

If I read correctly in your specs I see only 11 Amps on the +12v Rail. Is this correct?
If so, I'd advise a PSU that has at least 18 amps on the +12v Rail, perhaps as low as 16 with the other rails to match as shown currently in your spec.
11 Amps is just way too underpowered for that rig. I am surprised it even boots.
At what point does the BSOD occur?

    Hi,
Can you mention the steps you used before running the ales_install script? Which WLS version are you using for Admin Server? Is it CP3 or CP4 patched?

  • HD or Booting problem on MSI K7N2 Delta 2 Platinum

    Hi all,
    Ive a weird issue which i cant figure out myself. I've 2 HD's..lets call them A and B where A = 60Gb (Master) and B = 80Gb (Slave)
    It's is like this:
A and B are connected to the primary IDE-slot. A will boot when set as Master and B wont start booting when set as Slave mode (i mean, it wont show/appear in the first hardware (detection) bootscreen of yer BIOS where it says its present or the so called POST-screen), but if I set B as Master only (A turned off) it will boot.
What also happens is if I disconnect the power of drive B..drive A will boot..and while OS is loaded...I turn on the powercable from drive B and reboot..suddenly out of the blue it detects both HD's and reboots like it should do normally...but when i reboot from than..the same thing happens again..(it wont recognize B anymore)
Sumtime it regonizes both drives and sumtime it just won't and sumtimes just 1 drive..
Another thing, when it won't recognize one or sumtime both drives...the POST-screen gets stuck at the name and version of the BIOS...and where it says: 'detecting IDE drives...'  when it is at this stage..and I press  on the DEL-key for example..it's loading damn too slow..I've to wait about 10min before it enters the BIOS-setup..
I am 100% sure I set the jumper correctly for Master or Slave mode on my HD..I know there's sumthing wrong..but don't know where...Ive changed the jumper with a new one  ..switched IDE-cables...switched HD's (set B as Master and A as Slave and vice versa, knowing there is no active partition on B..but only to check if it recognizes the drive)..in all cases..the BIOS settings are set as default!
any1 can help me out with this?
It worked smoothly on my system till i noticed my second MEM bank of my mobo broke (Asus A7N8X-E)..so i had to change it quickly (and went to the store with my warranty to fix this board..it was only 3 months old) ..since I've seen/had enough Asus mobo's in my life I went this time for an MSI which looks better in my opinion...so now i have an MSI K7N2 Delta 2 Platinum..it works fine...except that HD issue mentioned above
any help would be appreciated..thnx in advance!
    cheers!

    Hi,
I've done that already several times...it doesnt work..any other suggestions?
Now I can boot normally when I disconnect the power of the 2nd HD (or just any HD)...when the os is loaded...I turn back on the power of the 2nd drive and reboot...than it will run/boot/restart etc..normally...this is the only workaround I have at the moment...this only works when the system is turned a long time...
My power supply is 400W..so I don't think Ive any prob with that
    cheers

unfortuntly i can't boot it. it wont show anything on screen.
i have tried anything i red in this forum (clear cmos... safe mode jumper...strip all parts...)
    all i get is :
blank black display, no beeps and keyboard lights flashes over and over (when connected to a KVM hub), when conected directly to keboard the lights flashes only once but stil black display and no beeps (i hear on speake, when powering up PSU, a silent short noise, no beep).
power suply turns on (new one 500w), i tried agp video card and replaced with pci video card.
memory is kingstone 512mb pc3200 400MHz x2, i tried only one of them and both in diferent sockets.
    cpu: AMD xp 3200+ 400fsb.
i did succed to go into bios only once, after lots of resets and shutdowns and bios clear (after ouers)
i choosed in the bios: load bios defaults, and thats it. i hoped it starts up but nothing.
i did all testing i know (checked all pins, cables, clear cmos...all, you name it)
all parts are brand new (except motherbord. it's seconds hand from eBay. i've bean talled that it works fine)
i also e-mailed MSI support that question. (2 days ago. no answer yet)
oh...and i have a pci POST diagnostic card and its 7seg display don't shows any numbers, only when once i succed to get into bios. i don't have the msi original D-Breket addon diag.

  • MSI K7N2 Delta2 Platinum + Boot problems.

    System Setup, so far:
    MSI K7N2 Delta2 Platinum
    Athlon XP 3000+ Barton, 333FSB
    Thermal Take Volcano7+ Fan
    PowerColor Radeon 9800Pro, 128MB
    GeiL 1x512MB, PC3200, DDR400
    Antec True Blue 480W
    Max: +5V=38A | -5V=0.5A | +12V=28A | -12V=1.0A | +3.3V=30A | +5V SB=2A
    Min: +5V=0A  | -5V=0A   | +12V=0.8A| -12V=0A   | +3.3V=0A  | +5V SB=0A
The problem is, that the screen is blank and there's no error beeps, when I fire up the system.
The D-bracket keeps giving me the 1-0-0-0 (Early Chipset Initialization)
    So far I have tried:
Reseat the CPU, didnt help. (This is the 2nd (or 3rd) CPU on this board)
Tried diffence slot, for the memory.
    Tried another memory type.
    Tried another GFX.
In every case, the D-bracket gives me the 1-0-0-0.
Just tried to fire up the system, without the CPU/MEMORY/GFX, and still I get the 1-0-0-0 (Early Chipset Initialization)
    Is the mainboard dead then?
Does anybody know of a solution, to this problem? Or any ideers at all?
    Thanks

Looks like some bhow this crap disk has blown something on my board   ,
    I think I have tried everything  .
Anything I should try before binning it .
    Yes the cpu is ok
    Memory is ok
    Thanks lads

  • I guess I didn't explaine that I have a healthy operating Windows 8 Boot camp partition on my hard drive. When I upgraded to Mavericks I am no long able to access the bootcamp partition from the disk icon in system preferences; the Windows 8 works fine.

On both Mini Mac and iMac 27" I am no longer able to utalize the Startup Disk icon in System Preferences; the Windows 8 on Bootcamp partition works fine if I close the Mavericks OX and select the Windows partition at bootup from the hard drive. My question is why don't the icon in System Prederences work anymore since I upgraded to Mavericks. Also, Users & Groups, Printers & Scanners icons no longer work either.

  • [nForce] Help with another booting problem with the MSI K7N2

Ok, I've been reading the threads and tried almost all of the solutions to no avail. Here is the issue...
While adjusting speed in bios, Upon reboot the system would not display video. Steps taken to solve:
*Betwwen all changes I unpluged all power from system
    1. Cleared CMOS VIA Jumper, Turned system on, no change
    2. set J10 Jumper to default then restarted, Still no video.
    3. Checked & reseated memory & CPU. Still nothing.
    4. Removed battery for about 30 seconds (Am going to try to remove it for 30 mins when i get a chance tomorrow) still nothing
At this point i assum the motherboard was bad. I tested botting up with no memory in an attempt to get the warming/error beeps but nothing the system just idles.
Am i missing something?  Any help suggestions or links to solutions would be greatly appretiated.

Sorry, I wasn;t trying to be vague, Was messing with the comp for a couple hours and got fed up. You were right, it was the k7n2. It's not mine it's a friends and wasn't around so i was going by memory. It had been running descent but was never properly installed (software) and was poorly cooled (hardware) so it had overheating restart issues. This is where I come in. I told my friend i would take a look at his computer. It was home built by one of his friends. Te system is fairly basic and the only plug in card used is a agp video card. The computer was working great after i reinstalled the CPU with proper thermal conducting when in BIOS his Athlon 2.6 was set for 1.8 I adjusted it up to the proper setting and he asked if i could bump it further. I attempted but it was unsuccessful and didn't boot. I cleared cmos with the jumper and it booted up again no problem. I stupidly went back in a fiddled around some more with something i shouldn't have because i don't remeber what it was. I belive it was the FSB Speed, but i'm not positive what change cause this particular shutdown. I'm no computer technichian, just a hobbiest. I cleared the Jumper again but this time it dodn't come back and boot. I then looked in the book and found out about jumper 10 (i think) for the SAFE MODE 100mhz boot. I set it as well with no response. I then disconnected the power cable from the PSU and unluged the battery for about half a min or so. cleared teh cmos jumper again, kept the safe mode jumper in safe mode and tried to reboot. It still just hangs. No screen, so Bios check or wrning beeps. It just idles. It revs the hard drive up for about 20sec or so but that is it. I'm going to try the suggestion earlier in the eact oprder giving by osnavi for the reseting cmos. I tried those steps in vvaroius orders 5 or 6 times before giving up.
Any help is appretiated. Thanks for your responses.

  • MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR Memory problems

I'm trying to burn in a system in a 50 deg C (122 deg F) room for a minimum of 12 hours.  The main system components are as follows:
    Motherboard:  MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR
    CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2800+
    Memory: 2x512 OCZ PC3200 EL
My problem is that the burn-in software continues to freeze up during the memory test.  I've already contacted the software manufacturers and the software is stable.  It's a problem with the way the motherboard handles the memory.  I've tried putting the memory in dual channel configuration and changing the timing settings in the BIOS.  The SPD settings are 2.5-3-3-7.  Right now I have them at 3-4-3-8.  It's a lot more stable than it was under the default settings but it still freezes up sometime after 7 hours.  Unfortunately, I wasn't around when it froze so I don't know exactly how long it lasted.  I can say that after 7 hours, it wasn't showing any slowdown in performance.  If anyone could think of anything else I might be able to do to get the system stable, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for the suggestions.  The CPU FSB is 200, so it's already matched up there.  And we have a ton of fans already.  There are two in the front, 4 inside and 1 on the back.  It's a custom case, 2u high.  The power supply is oversized and more than adequate to provide the required power.  I have four of these units running right now.  Two with 2x512 sticks and two with 1x1024 sticks.  For each combination, the memory clock speed for one is 166 and 200 for the other.  I have been loosening up the memory timings trying to get the system stable, but it still isn't.  If the power supply is good, and I'm unable to cool the system anymore due to limititions within the case, is there anything you can think of to stabilize the system.  Maybe other settings in the BIOS or suggestions on how to go about getting good timings for the memory.  Thanks.
