MSI K7N2Delta Platinum/ILSR + 2TB WD Caviar GREEN

Hi!
What is the difference between this two old motherboards? Do anyone would work recognize a 2TB Caviar Green drive? I need to add this disk to an old socket A machine to be used as storage/backup.
THanks in advance!

i would doubt that any socket A machine is capable of using a 2TB hard drive at full capacity as they where never even on the horizon when made by a long time because the socket A boards are now ancient!
i don't even think 1TB drives where around then as your board was built in the time of windows 2000! if i remeber correctly the max capacity at that time was around 100-250GB at most!
i may be wrong but i believe it cant be done (could be wrong but its a long shot)!
id suggest scrapping it and buying a low end modern motherboard+cheap ram and a cheap cpu for $150 as a backup and storage device as i dont think a socket A board can even do it!

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum with Western Digital 750Gb Caviar Green 32mb

Hi all, this is my first post and im a bit of a numbskull when it comes to upgrading, thus this post.
My HDD is on its last legs and I want to get a Western Digital 750Gb Caviar Green 32mb. Im not sure weather it will work with my  MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (MS-7025). Can anyone help me out? If you have any suggestions for a better HDD to go for that would also be appreciated, Cheers

Burst speeds are high mainly because of the disk's cache. That's the only part of the HDD that can get near the maximum bandwdth of the controller.
The bottleneck for speed is in the fact that the HDD's mechanical properties won't allow it to work faster. With SSD's it is or will be different.
Back to topic: the WD Green is an excellent choice. I've 6 of those running here now, 5 in a NAS and 1 in my pc and they're simply good. Not the fastest, but very stable, quiet and fast enough.

  • Seagate 2TB Caviar Green 5900RPM drives.

This is more of an informational topic than a question, but: Over the last two weeks, I've acquired four of these drives. The first two were on sale for $80, but I paid the full $99 for the last two. I've been using three of them in a software raid(Linux MD raid on Debian Testing) for a backup server, and the fourth for an offline backup of some stuff I wanted a spare copy of. Anyway, I have to say I'm very impressed with these drives. I've been getting somewhere over 120MB/sec linear read(Note: was tested on my slow server, so it could be even faster) and around 130MB/sec linear *write* over the entire drive. I was surprised at how /little/ the speed dropped off near the end of the drive, but that could be just good firmware. From what I've seen so far, I recommend them to anyone building a backup or media server. Anyway, has anyone else had any experience with these? I'd assume they wouldn't be super great for a boot drive due to the lower RPM, but I've never tried - they might be perfectly great due to their high density per platter.

WD drive speeds go up and down as needed with the Green drives.
    Nope: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/reviews/western_digital_caviar_green_2tb
Also, while I can't point to any proof, I know that someone did an audio-analysis on the /1/TB Caviar Greens, and it turns out that the speed appeared to be, in fact, 5400RPM(though WD wouldn't publically admit to it).
    TheLexMachine wrote:
They have 5400 RPM drives but those are the Blue drives and not the Green ones.
If you had looked at WD's own product spec sheet, you'd know that this was wrong. Both the Blue and Black drives are 7200RPM; the blue's are just cheaper and not *quite* as fast(according to various benchmarks I've seen)

As for the Barracuda LP drives, they seem to have a significant failure rate or at least they did last time I checked as the line is prone to defects and design flaws, which is why people generally shun them in favor of the WD Green drives.
I saw that -- to some extent, anyway -- when I was on Newegg, and I intended to get WD Caviar Greens 1.5TB's. Unfortunately, BBY's deal on them was web-only, so I got what was available in-store; in this case, 2TB Barracuda Green's. So far, I've been extremely impressed by the performance level, and I've got some redundancy so I'm not *too* worried about failures(And I've been working towards getting all three disks in my raid to have been from different lots so they don't fail all at once), but we'll just have to see in the months ahead.

The last time I tried switching to WD (earlier this year with a 1TB unit) was a nightmare.  The disk's onboard controller would randomly freeze up and drop its SATA link.  Attempting to retrieve SMART status from Linux would cause the drive to instantly hang.
That's interesting: I've had about 6 of the 640GB Caviar Blue's; absolutely no issues on Linux or Windows. You could have had slightly-bad drive, just with some part of the controller failing.

  • WD Caviar Green 2TB - disappearing drive

    Hi all,
I have installed a 2TB WD drive for use as a time machine drive. (expanding from 1TB external)
Sometimes the disk displays odd characteristics, such as:
    • Overnight (last night for example) TM didn't do any further backups after 7.43pm. This caused system preferences to crash and of course TM wasn't accessible. And Finder also hung. So I restarted...
    • But because of whatever reason the computer wouldn't restart, so now I had to do a hard restart, but the WD drive wouldn't show up.
    • I shut down, remove the drive from its bay (bay 2), put it back in, restart and all is well again.
*Now, is this a low power/sleep issue?* It would seem that the hard restart would remove that question.
*Is it a jumper settings issue?* Removing the drive and putting it back in would seem to eliminate that issue. (for the record, they are at OPT1 enabled, as that seemed to work best at the time.)
Does anyone know what the best way forward is? It would seem to me that neither the drive or the Mac are broken (there was a 500gb WD in that bay before with no problems) and when the drive is mounted - it seems to work fine, until I'm not around then there is a problem.
I would prefer to allow my drives to sleep when unused, but is switching that preference off the only option?
    Thanks,
    Aaron

Why or what jumper setting is that for? default as is with none.
Removing and installing again isn't going to change anything.
It comes with SSC and OPT1 Disabled. Leave it that way.
And I would not allow drives to spin down.
I am also not a big fan if at all of TimeMachine (think after 3 yrs but no) so I favor SuperDuper, CCC and Tri-Backup 5.
Is it a jumper settings issue? Removing the drive and putting it back in would seem to eliminate that issue. (for the record, they are at OPT1 enabled, as that seemed to work best at the time.)
10.5.6 and above should be fine. Even with the newest version (with 64MB cache).

  • Add a new 4tb hdd to msi p45 platinum ?

I'm planning to add a new 4TB western digital, caviar green  HDD's for my msi p45 platinum motherboard ist work will or use 3 tb .
    thank you

Just some notes regarding large drives on the older chipset boards.
    The P45 Plat has
    • SATAII controller integrated in ICH10R/JMicron® 363 chipset
    - Up to 3Gb/s transfer speed.
    - Supports six SATAII ports by ICH10R
    - Supports two SATAII ports by JMicron 363, support SATA RAID 0/1/JBOD.
In principle the ICH10R allows amongst Raid capability also the ability(potentially) to handle up to 2TB in AHCI.
What other users with similar boards have however commented on is that they were able to use up to 3TB drives on the JMicron controller, obviously with the latest firmware for that controller and also AHCI. We all know that the JMicron ports are a bit slower than the Intel ports, but that is evident with Asmedia as well.
So when you do test, check both your Intel and JMicron ports and see what they report as the drive capacity in the BIOS.

bcoz i see the bios v1.5 say can detect 1tb only
No, it does not say, that the Board/BIOS can "only" support 1TB hard drives.  The note in the changelogs means that compatibility problems with certain 1TB drives were fixed with this BIOS Release.  My P45 Platinum had no problem with 1TB hard drives even with the very first BIOS Release (v1.0).
    Quote
can my msi p45 platinum detect it ?
It should be able to properly detect it (there is no official limit on hard drive sizes on the chipset or BIOS Level).  In any case, I cannot remember any user who has actually tested 2TB hard drives on this board (in fact I even doubt MSI has tested 2TB hard drives (when the board came out, 2TB hard drives were not really popular yet)).  That is why you will have a hard time to find a user that will be able to answer you question from his/her own experience.
Currently, the only possible answer to your question is:  It should work in theory.  To find out if it works in practice, try it and see.

I assembled everything very carefully, but it wont startup normally. The power is on, the HDD, DVD, geforce graphic, everthing is good to go. But nothing happens, the PCI-E graphic fan is on but there is no response on the LCD monitor. The D-bracket shows 1:red 2:green 3:red 4:red, which is "Memory detection test, The D-LED will hang if the memory module is damaged or not installed properly" Says the manual.
Everything is brand new out of the box!
    Please help me Im lost.
    Kind regards

Some more questions in addition to that:
    1. Did you plug in all power connectors properly?
    ----> 24 pin (board)
    ----> 8 pin (2x (2x2) pin) +12V CPU (board)
----> 4 pin (molex) PCIe (board)
    ----> 6 pin +12V PCIe (video card)
    2. Can you give a little more information about your power supply, I found two different power supplies on the NorthQ Web Site that have similar modell names.
---> How many +12V rails does it have and what is amperage limit on each rail?
    - The NorthQ site lists a power supply called 4775-500S Giant Thunder and in a note it says: 2 * 75Watt PCI-Express line. That means only about 6A for the video card only on the 6 pin PCIe connector.  This may be too weak.  Make sure you are using the board's PCIe connector as well.
    3. If you can't boot your system it is of course impossible to have a look at the BIOS Version.  If you are unlucky, the board came with a BIOS Version prior to v1.4, which means that your CPU may not be supported with the current BIOS.

  • MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR Dead? Help!

    Hey all,
Well, the other day I was on my computer playing a game when my mobo fan started making an odd noise (as if switching rpm), so I took off the side of my case and took a look inside. Everything seemed to be functioning properly, then I switched my cpu fan speed via the pci slot speed control. As I switched from High-Medium-Low, I noticed that the fan actually slowed to the point where I could see the blades spinning, at least for a second or so. I found that rather odd, seeing as how I've never seen a fan (especially a cpu fan) slow to the point that I could see the blades spin. Anyway, a couple of hours later, I shut down and went to sleep.
The next day I had my comp on for about maybe 30mins to an hour or so when suddenly I heard an alarm from the computer speaker, so I was like, ":censored:?" since I had never heard it before. It was evidently the temperature warning, which I had set to 70C. So I shut down within 15 seconds and opened up the side of my case.
I noticed that the cpu fan wasn't moving at all (usually I'd open the case in time to see the spin-down). So I turned the computer back on and the fan didn't budge, so I immediately powered down, assuming that the CPU Fan had died. Later on, I hooked the fan itself up to a free power cord in my sister's computer and booted up, along with the speed controller, flipping from medium to high to low without any problems.
I then did screwed the fan back to the heatsink in my comp and booted up. I went into the bios an noticed that the rpm was 8k, which is way too high for my fan (normally 5k). So i began switching from high, medium, to low once again, then I saw that the rpm reader in the bios went to 0. So I looked back in the side of my case and saw that the cpu fan was once again dead. At this point I concluded that it was the fan and was about to order the Volcano 12.
A day later I placed the fan inside my sister's computer on a free cord, yet again, and yet again, it worked fine.
I once again put it in my computer to test and this time it worked fine, even while switching between speeds. Unfortunately, I then noticed that the mobo fan was not moving, then began to move.
Well, I'm guessing now that it's simply the motherboard that has a short, since both the motherboard fan as well as the cpu fan have randomly been dying the past few days. The motherboard fan; however, has switched rpm many times in the past from 5k to 3k.
It could also be a PSU problem, but I have Antec 400watt psu and it's been working fine for the past 2 years, so I doubt it. I've had the motherboard for a little over a year. I upgraded my cpu from 2200+ to 3000+ in July. That's also when I bought the cpu fan. The motherboard fan began fluctuating in rpm noticeably back in April or May of this year.
Yesterday, I used the computer again and had it on for about 2 hours or so and I had speedfan monitoring the temps and the rpm. The temps stayed relatively stable: 48 cpu, 44 mobo.
But alas, the RPMs were totally [blame me for the swear filter] up. At one point, both the mobo and cpu fan speeds were reading 0, even though both continued to spin within the case and the temps remained the same. Then after 30mins or so, they cpu fan began reading again at 40,000-42,000rpm, which is obviously incorrect, seeing as the fan is rated for around 5k. I got/get the same readings in the bios, both fans reading at 0rpm as they continue to physically spin.
Also, during a number of times that I've started up the comp within the past few days, the motherboard northbridge fan wasn't spinning at all and didn't begin to until a few minutes into my windows session.
Also, I took out the NB fan and noticed a slight crack in the back of it.
I was considering simply just buying the Volcano 12 and the MSI K7N2 Delta2 Platinum rather than RMAing the mobo. Then perhaps an Antec 550W psu, if necessary.
Any ideas what I should replace and in which order? And has anybody else encountered any similar problems with this mobo (at least with the mobo rpm, which has been a prob for about 6months on and off)?
I bought the mobo along with a 2200+ in July of 2003. I upgraded the ram from 256 to 512 in April 2004 (which is around the time I started hearing rpm probs with the mobo fan) and I upgraded the cpu in July of 2004

Could be a fluctuating PSU that's breaking down power to the MB. You have a whole lot of components dragging that PSU down. With what you have in your rig I would run either an Antec or Enermax 550W. Best way to be sure is to borrow a PSU or buy one from a store with a good return policy so that you can return it if indeed it turns out to be the MB. If I don't have your board here on my bench to test the only thing I can suggest to you is to swap out components unfortunately.

  • Problem with MSI P45D3 Platinum

Hi, I've just built myself a new computer but it wont start. When I turn the power on on the power supply all that happens is a red led on the motherboard starts to flash. The led is under my graphic card on the right hand side of the board, I think its the led3 thats flashing. Nothing else works, the power supply fan and the cpu fan both dont run. The power switch on the front of the case does not work.
Is the red flashing led the standby led?

Try to push the onboard-power-on button and see if that changes anything.
In case the problem still occurs, please take the board out of the case and test it on a non-conducting surface in barebone configuration.
If that still does not solve the problem, test a different Power Supply Unit, maybe your's broke (had the same symptoms once with a broken Be Quiet PSU on a P45 Platinum).
Should a different PSU not solve the problem, RMA the board.

  • Big problem with new WD Caviar Green HDD, please advise!

I bought a new Western Digital Caviar Green HDD 1TB, ( WD10EADS ) it is a SATA 3Gb/s interface HDD, 3.5-inch form factor. the RPM = IntelliPower (NOT 7200 RPM or 5400 RPM which means Rotate automatically depends on the needs of fetching data I suppose?)
    I acknowledged that this series of HDD which three of 6 have the same Power Management which Read/Write = 4.9W / Idle = 2.8W / Standby = 0.4 W / Sleep = 0.4W
    They are differ from the other 3, which 500GB one is 4.1W / 2.2W / 0.8W / 0.8W and 1.5TB is 4.73W 2.75W / 0.72W / 0.72W; 2TB is 6W 3.7W 0.8W 0.8W
Which mean the Standby and Sleep mode are the same state.
Now my big problem is, I bought an external dock SI-7908UI for this WD Caviar Green HDD.
    So I first put the HDD into the SI-7908UI Dock ( USB 2.0 / eSATA / Firewire 400 /800 )
I tried many way of sequence of who power on first? WD Caviar Power on first? or Mac mini Power on first? I found that the best way is Mac mini Power on first, then Power on the external HDD.
OK, before I address my big problem, I should let you know, I found that there is NO S.M.A.R.T. working when you put a S.M.A.R.T. HDD outside the Mac or PC. In Dock, the S.M.A.R.T. won't work, That's how I saw in System Profiler, the FireWire tab says " S.M.A.R.T. status: Not Supported "
and I did test a Non-Green Maxtor HDD, the S.M.A.R.T. doesn't show either. You'll need this info before the real problem I'm gonna say in the following.
NOW, about 10~15 minutes after my Mac mini boot, if I didn't fetch anything from my external HDD, it would goes to sleep itself, that confirmed that the Specification Sheet was true, the Idle = 2.8W and I believe it goes to Idle, NOT Standby or Sleep, which I also believe the Standby or Sleep signal is supposed to be given by Mac OS, but it sounds like Standby or Sleep, BECAUSE the WD HDD suddenly not rotate and the sound it appears that it goes to SLEEP, am I right? I keep Mac awake by browsing the web so Mac mini won't go to sleep (I set 10 minutes in Energy Saver and I checked Put the HDD to sleep when possible)
Well, That is my big problem when WD Green HDD goes to sleep, because I CAN'T wake it up, NOT eject or Shut down the Mac mini. (OK, I'm NOT sure if it goes to Sleep or Idle)
First I thought it freezes the whole Mac OS, then I found I still can move many things, such as I am doing right now, post this big problem here. but I am sure the others are freeze! and no matter how many time I click Shut Down or Restart or Force Quit, the Mac mini didn't respond.
I tried to figure it out because I don't want to Shut Down by force.(5 seconds Press the Power button)
then I found that if I power down the external dock 7908-UI when Mac fail to shut down/restart/or eject the external HDD, It worked.
And the Mac OS will appear a window says that "I shouldn't unplug an external device without Ejecting it first" something like that. and suddenly it shuts down very quickly, everything back to normal, it shut down successfully.
What am I gonna do with this? Am I going to power down my external HDD first every time I want to shut down/eject/restart? Because the Eject the external HDD will cause freeze too! Freeze Finder I suppose.
Is it caused by 7908-UI ? or Caused by WD Caviar's Green Power management?
Because I don't trust 7908-UI, it doesn't look like a trusted brand, I've never heard of this SSI company anyway.
What am I gonna do? Please advise.
    Thanks in advance.

Please realise that I am not the right person to be asking. I pointed you to a thread where, as a Moderator at the Bombich forums, I felt the need to warn users of CCC that a WD drive might cause problems. The thread mainly just copies what WD have said.
Obviously your drive will respond/awake/spin up when you access it manually. Some of the problems are...
    •  Most users want to be in control of whether and/or when a drive sleeps -- WD's auto-sleep cannot be disabled and so precludes that.
    •  Most users want their drive to obey settings in Energy Saver -- the WD auto-sleep mechanism doesn't allow that.
    •  Most users want a scheduled cloning/backup to take place during the night. The cloning app starting the backup process should cause the target drive, if sleeping, to wake/spin up so that the process can take place -- it does for all drives except WD drives where the auto-sleep mechanism used doesn't allow it. LaCie drives, for instance, have auto-sleep +as an option+, during which the drive will respond to Energy Saver settings and to software such as a cloning app.
Please, Mauricette, put you questions/concerns/problems to the reseller or to WD, both of whom took your money without warning you. I am NOT a WD expert! ...or lover! ( )   I became more than disenchanted when I saw that a) WD do not point out the limitations of their external drives at point of sale, and b) WD put the blame for these inadequacies/problems/limitations onto Apple, ignoring the fact that no drives other than WD drives have them.

  • Is new MSI K9A2 Platinum DOA?

Bought a new MSI K9A2 Platinum Version 1 MOBO off eBay, installed with spacers between board and case and installed my current hardware. Power came on but, pc would not post. Bigfoot NIC model: Killer M1
ATX Case with 4 X 90 MM Case fans
Initially thought could be the video cards but, owner's guide and MSI Tech Support state that K9A2 can support up to 16X, so I assume that also means it support PCIe 1.0 as well as PCIe 2.0.
Have read on MSI forum that power could be the issue but, tend to believe if I take it down to bare minimum (CPU, CPU Cooler, 1 Stick of Ram, 1 Video Card, HD (SATA), 2 X 90mm case fans and MOBO)  that it should have booted up at the point.

    Any help or ideas?
    Thanks in advance

    Boombox,
Good morning and thanks for putting my concerns to rest, like I said before, I have to upgrade a part at time.  Next piece is AMD Phenom II X4 955 (hopefully gets here NLT Tuesday) with RAM I purchased last month and did not want to fry them first time I boot up the system.   Plus I am on Day 2 since switch out of my K9A and still no issues
Also I must weigh in on MSI's RMA process, overall the process is pretty smooth, my issue is with the replacement MOBO.  Guess after they tested my old MOBO (NEW OUT OF THE BOX), they had to replace it.  Replacement board was USED (assuming until failure by previous owner) and had some "Cosmetic issues", 1. Copper Cooling tube is slightly crushed not sure what that does to air flow and 2.  Half of the IDE pins were bent, I can't see thing in front of me, so I had to take a digital picture of IDE plug and blow up so I could see which way to bend them back.  Figure there would be some sort of QC before return but, guess not......
Assuming since it all relates to this post, once I install CPU and RAM will let those that have taken time out of their day to help me, know what my latest status is.  Again Thanks to all of you, hopefully I can pay back your help in the future.

  • Various advice needed to overclock cpu using my MSI k8n platinum sli

Hey guys, i recently overclocked my amd 64 3500 cpu to 2.4ghz (from 2.2ghz) i was wondering if any could tell me how high i can get this cpu up to using the msi k8n platinum sli mobo.
At the moment the cpu's temp goes to 40-45 oC.
If i can overclock the cpu some more, can anyone give me detailed instructions on how to overclock it as i'm computer newbie.
i'm using the standard amd heatsink and fan so i know that will comprimise the potentail of the cpu's overclocking capability, as i heard that some people managed to get their cpu up to 3.ghz with a high quality fan, so i was just wondering if anyone can tell me how high i can get my cpu frequency with a standard fan as i really don't want to risk damaging the cpu if i go overboard.
    Thnx in advance.
P.S Does anyone come across any green flashing lights while playing their games when the high performance settings mode is set to optimized in bios settings mode??
    AMD ATHLON 64 3500@ 2.4GHZ
MSI K8N NFORCE4 SLI PLATINUM MOBO
1024MB DUAL CHANNEL DDR RAM 333MHZ
    120GB HDD
2X PNY GEFORCE FX 6600GT PCI-E (SLI MODE)

what HSF for cpu/ cooling for the case do you use? And also, where are the flashing lights?

  • Overclocking Q6600 with MSI P45 Platinum

    Hi again!
I need some advice regarding my OC settings.
Unfortunately, im an unlucky owner of the infamous Q6600 L8XX batch which has a high VID (1.3250v)
Anyway, I was able to reach 3GHz stable with these settings:
MSI P45 Platinum official v1.5 bios
Motherboard OC Jumper set to: default
    ================================
    C1E: Disabled
    Green Power: All Disabled
    ================================
    Multi-Step OC Booster: Mode 1
    DOT Control: Disabled
    Intel Eist: Disabled
Adjust CPU FSB Frequenxy (MHz): 333
    Adjust CPU Frequency: 3000
    CPU Multiplier: 9

    Advance DRAM Configuration: Manual
    Enhanced Settings: Enabled
    NB Drive Config: auto
    CAS Latency (CL): 5
    tRCD: 5
    tRP: 5
    tRAS: 15
    Advanced memory Setting: Disabled
    FSB/DRAM ratio: 1:1.2
    Adjusted Dram Frequency: 800
    ================================
    ClockGenTuner:  No Changes Done
    Adjusted PCI Frequency: 37.5
    Auto disable DRAM/PCI Frequency: Disabled

    CPU Voltage: 1.3175v
    CPU GTL REF0: auto
    CPU GTL REF1: auto
    Dram voltage: 2.100v
    DDR_VREF_A: auto
    DDR_VREF_B: auto
    MCH Voltage: 1.4v
    MCH GTL REF: auto
    VTT FSB Voltage: 1.35v
    ICH Voltage: 1.52v
    ================================
    Spread Spectrum: Disabled
My goal is set at 3GHz and to get a lower cpu voltage (lower than my current 1.3175v), but anything below 1.3175v restarts when i stress test using OCCT. I've run memtest and it's ok. Can anybody advise which voltage I can configure to lower my cpu voltage? Also, is 333 x 9 to achieve 3GHz better? Or should I go with 375 x 8? Thanks! Btw, I plan to maintain these settings for the remainder of my CPU's life..  :D

thanks for the tip. i'm currently logging all my OC settings in an excel file. i just finished played an hour of COD4 without any restarts or instability. currently my settings are just the same except CPU voltage is at 1.344v and i reduced my Dram voltage to 2.0v. running memtest for over an hour, 2 passes already with no errors. i'll stress test it over the weekend.
i have a question though. a lot of people are suggesting a 1:1 FSB/DRAM ratio. but using 333x9 settings @ 1:1, you get 667.. i'm using 2x 2GB GeiL PC6400 800, that's why i used the 1:1.2 FSB/DRAM ratio to get 800. is it ok to keep using the 1:1.2 FSB/DRAM ratio even though people say 1:1 is the ideal ratio? many thanks for the reply

Did you put the videocard in another slot?
Have you tried 1 memory stick next to the CPU?
    Is JPWR1 (CPU power) connected?
I've put the video card in the x16 PCI-E Slot first then I tried in the other one, nothing happened either. Then I tried to unplugged the video card and try to boot with the video card of the motherboard, same problem
Also I tried to use just one memory stick and the JPWR1 is connected.
I'm going to try with a the processor of a friend of mine, an AMD Phenom X4 9550 to discart a Bios update issue.
