MSI K8N NEO PLAT + CD / DVD-RW Drives

Hi, i have the msi k8n neo plat. I recently had to replace my old mobo due to the old power supply blowing or something. So i got me a 480watt enermax coolergiant psu. Replaced the mobo for a new msi k8n neo plat. Put the mobo in and psu. Working fine and dandy. Now i installed 64bit xp to primary, and ive had it running for for about 2 weeks. Went to install linux to the second hard drive, so i changed the boot order, saved settings and went to load disc...however now my cd and dvd drives dont work, and they dont work in windows either.

Can anybody tell me what i should set the cpu fsb frequency to in the bios.
I just read this in the faq
What is the fsb speed of this cpu?
Depending on which FSB you are asking about: The Athlon 64's have the memory controller built in (which was previously part of the Northbridge on the motherboard) which uses up to 200MHz DDR Memory (400MHz FSB) The HyperTransport link from the CPU to the rest of the motherboard runs up to 800MHz. Just to expand on my answer... The HT link is 800MHz, but it's 16 bit in size (2 bytes worth of data per clock) the total bandwidth of the HyperTransport link is 3.2GB in total - 1.6GB sending data to CPU and 1.6GB receiving data from CPU.

I have built 2 computers exactly the same.
    msi k8n neo plat

    8og sata maxtor
    amd 64 3200
    128mb ati 9800 pro
    asus cd drive
When i tried to install windows xp pro on both the machines i got the same error. could not copy file. On each try the file was a different one. After hours of trying new things i found that putting the memory in slot 2 on the motherboard  solved the problem, windows installed and booted up as norm. When i moved the memory back to slot 1 the computer would not boot.
I have now left the memory in slot 2 but the computer will still crash every hour.
I am sure this is something to do with the memory but not sure what the problem is.
    Can anyone help.

    any cue with the problem.

System restore? You need to find out what's causing the problem and you have too many things connected to it to be able to figure out what it is, always start with a basic system - video, primary hard disk, cd + fdd, no more and nothing else connected. Then when something goes wrong along the way you'll have more chance of narrowing it down if the problem appears.
What you'll want to do now is disable/uninstall/unplug any additional non-system-critical components that you have connected to it such as extra usb slots, printers, scanners and anything else. Keyboard, mouse, video with no sound and see if the problem persists. If it does, try another video driver. If it's fixed then reconnect/enable one device and try again until the problem reappears and you can find out what's causing it -- unless you can speed read that message quickly before it shuts down
Now that I think of it, have you set the OS to not automatically reboot on any errors? That might keep the BSOD up there so you can note it down and hopefully point at the problem instead of going through all the above hassle ^^

    ,

Try raising RAM voltage to 2.7v - 2.8v.
    If no go - Run Memtest86 http://www.memtest.org/#downiso
If no go -  Try onboard Audio ( disable / remove Audigy2 )

  • Msi k8n neo plat and microsoft ie

getting my msi k8n neo plat board running satisfactory , except for one problem . when i got to amdmb.com, i start surfing the site, and after a minute or 2, i get a microsoft ie error, send the error report to microsoft, and then ie closes. what is the problem , is it with amdmb.com site? its the only site that this problem with ie is present, all other sites i don,t have this problem

just tryed using the browser firefox, and it works great.  its just ie that doesn,t work on amd.mb, and only that site. wierd problem, never experienced anything like it before. had run a short memtest , no errors.  the 6800gt , msi k8n neo plat and amd 64 3400 work great. get some super madonion benchmarks-all default-1024 x 768 32bit- 22,755. i was hoping for 22,000, but exceeded my expectations. can get into the 23,000 + with overclocking the 6800gt, have had it overclocked at gpu-412, memory 1.12. not sure how much more you can increase the numbers, thinking my gpu is close to the limit at 412.had a problem with windvd, it ended up being a configuration in windvd- had to enable hardware acceleration , bingo- worked great after that. got my corsair xms pc 3200 to work at 6-3-3-2 timings. still getting to know the board,  there is definately a learning curve to be delt with on this board, but i am getting it to work better by the day.

  • Msi k8n neo plat and 3dmark03

with my msi k8n neo plat , bfg 6800gt, and amd 64 3400 clawhammer- i get 11,114 in 3dmark03. seems like i should be getting a higher score-any suggestions.

You appear to have misread my post, read carefully, I said "at clock speeds" not "at stock speeds" which I think is where u misunderstood. I know it's overclocked, but who isn't going to if there is so much headroom? With coolbits you can have higher speeds when running 2d or 3d applications to keep temps low and for longevity of the card.

  • Overclocking msi k8n neo plat

trying to overclock my msi k8n neo plat and run mad 2001
    hardware - amd 64 3400
    bfg 6800gt
    corsair pc3200
i go into bios and set ram at 400mhz, set agp at 67 mhz. then open center and enter 210 mhz fsb. when i start madonion, it freezes. is it my memory?

Could be a ram incompatibility issue.  I have some OCZ pc3500 EL which is great in my other systems, but doesn't work in the Neo without bluescreens and crashes to desktop.  It might also be a power related issue.  What type of power supply are you using and what is the amperage on the 12v rail?  That seems to be pretty important for this board.

If it's not enought you can plug an IDE PCI card....

  • MSI K8N Neo Plat help please!!!

Hi guys, long time browser first time poster on these forums.
I have a few questions which im hoping some of you can help me with, i searched through the message boards but found no answer so I thought i'd write a plea for help.
I recently sold my Asus K8V Deluxe and decided to replace it with a nForce3 250Gb alternative. I ended up purchasing an MSI K8N Neo, which is fantastic apart from 3 particular issues:
    1. After the PC POSTs and before the WinXP loading screen, there is a long delay (about 25-30 seconds) where the PC does nothing. No hard disk activity or anything, just sits there on a blank screen. Can anyone help with as to what might be causing this problem?
    2. Im using a WD 120Gb SATA hard drive, connected to SATA port 3. Using the 'speed test' tool that is provided under the Nvidia Serial ATA controller, I receive a burst speed rate of 69.9mb / sec and a sustained speed of 52.4mb / sec. This falls far below the claimed 150mb / sec. Is there anything I can do to improve this??
    3. In terms of actual system performance its more or less identical to when I had the K8V. I've read in a few reviews that the nForce3 mobo's are faster than the VIA variety. Again is there something I can do to improve this or am I just a gullible mofo?
All drivers are completely up to date and the system is running on a fresh install of XP.
    Cheers.

First, are you raiding drives? It seems you are not, so my next question is did you load the drivers off the floppy disk? For sata drives that are not raided, this is an unnecessary step that has caused systems to hang at startup.-solution- reformat without loading these drivers.

That is about right for that drive. The 150 mb/s is just theoretical, not realistic at this point. My raptor at 10,000rpm's gets about 121mb/s burst and 70mb/s average. So if anything your burst may be a little low. The rpm's of the hard drive is makingmore of the difference than the sata.

The Nforce3 250's are generally a little faster than via's but in some areas not so. These difference would hardly be noticed by the naked eye in most instances, only benchmarks. So you sre not gullible, just a little uninformed about the actual speed difference.

check this out m8, could be somerthing to do with it.
Also make sure you got latest drivers etc etc.
Try disabling the Nvidia/ati speed up setting in bios. hit shift + f2 alt + f3 I think in bios - brings up these options

  • MSI K8N Neo Plat + RAM

    Hi,
    i have
    3200+ Newcastle @ stock
    128mb hercules 9800pro
    Audigy 2 ZS sound card
    512mb kingston ram
    160gb hard drive
    80gb hard drive
    DVD-RW
    CD rom drive
and everything was working fine.....fine but slow.
So i brought some geil ram, 512mb. 184-pin pc3200. Now this stuff is nice, and overclocks well.
    However
the kingston ram works fine on its own, and the geil ram works fine on its own. But together they wont work. is wrong?

what made you buy the geil????
Why not buy another 512mb kingston ram????
Different memory modules have different timings & run at different memory voltages
If you buy the same make & model memory they run at the same timings & run at the same memory voltages. - they'll run together
the only option you have is too manually set the timings to that of the slowest module & see if they work, or return the Giel & get some more kingston.

  • MSI K8N Neo Plat and 6800 Ultra

I just got a BFG 6800 Ultra from a friend yesterday. Worked great for him the whole time he had it. I just put in a new 550 watt PSU because I read it requires a lot of power. Put it in, fan turns on, card seems to get power just fine. Just loading up and going through BIOS is like a matrix, everything is jumbled around and impossible to read. Windows will not boot, get a black screen. I can run in safe mode with a slightly messed up background. Under settings it does not detect any kind of card, but under device manager it is listed, and I did install drivers. Not sure what the problem could be, I messed around with what I could see in BIOS, turned off fast write and such. Any ideas? Thanks.

If you previously had an ATI card you will need to totally remove the old drivers & it's a good idea to replace them with newer versions regardless.
Simply uninstalling usually isn't enough, because there's always "leftovers". There's a free utility called Driver Cleaner (Google for it) that will remove all traces of the old drivers.
Also, if you are running a Neo 2 Platinum (AGP graphics) there's some other things to be aware of as far as BIOS settings.
    - Disable ATI/Nvidia Speedup. This tries to OC the bejeebus out of your vid card & usually with bad results.
    - Disable Fastwrites as well. This is a known NF3 chipset/6800 issue. One would think that Nvidia parts would "play nice" together - Go figure.

  • Removing norhtbridge on MSI K8N Neo Plat

I have always been one of the ones with high temps on my board, I just recently bought the Zalman 7000B-ALCU and installed it, but my temps only dropped a couple degrees. And my nb temp is still higher than my CPU. And to clear it up now I have the 1.5 bios.
So I am thinking maybe I should see if I am one of the ones with bad thermal paste on the nb. So I opened up my case and I can't tell how to get the nb heatsink off? It is the gold one with the MSI Logo on it. Can anyone tell me how to remove it so I can put some AS5 on it.

    Hi Shark,
At idle my chipset(33C) is hotter than my CPU(26C) 7030 Bios v1.5. i'm also using the Zalman 7000B-ALCU

    yes
I fitted a vantec cca1b to my chipset. What I have found is that ensuring good airflow in the case (2x120mm fans 1 in base Input 1 top rear exhaust)  ensures that  the warm air cleared from the chipset & CPU is removed rather than standing in the case. I proved this almost by accident while changing cases at Xmas, from a full tower to a mid tower. until i had the 120mm's case fans in place my chipset was about 40C against the 33C now.
So i guess in summary yes it could be poor thermal paste coverage but check out your case ventilation as well.
    luck
