Msi K8N Neo with Athlon 64 3200

I just recieved the parts today 1x Msi K8N Neo Mobo and 64 3200 procesor, so far ive only been running it a few hours and allready i have had a lot of problems with it, first off the temp of my cpu is at 64oc when idol, and about 72oc on full load, I have the Coolermaster Hyper6 KHC-V81 heatsink with 2 mounted fans, and im sure thats more then enough to cool any proccessor?? Next up after restarting the computer the mouse/keyboard do not work when you get back into windows. i have no idea why tried all sorts of problems such as reinstalling drivers, Next up the board reads the default clock speed at 2.2ghz, am i wrong but isnt it meant to be 2.0ghz, both in bios and windows, it also says that my cpu has 512kb l2 cache when it is meant to have 1mb.
Needless to say i am not a happy bunny
if any1 has any ideas on what could be causing this please let me know as soon as possible before i throw my rig out the window
P.s The multiplier is on defualt, but it is 11x, isnt it soposed to be 200X 10??

As with the K8T800 board, MS products have been a thorn in the side. Try some cheap-o mouse and keyboard until you get your system stabilized. Make sure your BIOS settings accept OS2 and Plug 'n Play...turn off legacy support. Make note of all BIOS settings and which ones are enabled/disabled.....'cause we will be looking for your assistance on a lot of initial boot-up questions! Thanks very much =DNA=

maybe i,m wrong but could someone please tell me what the average reading would be for a motherboard and 3.5 chip.

You were being asked a question in a funny way instead of slamming you directly. As you don't care to answer the question on what you were benchmarking with and the simple fact that there are hundreds of proggies that can be used in benchmmarking we can't answer you as it stands. However since you have taken an attitude about this rather than take a bit of ribbing and giving an answer as well as shouting by the use of all caps... You now have a warning and the thread is closed.
I strongly suggest you read the forum rules as they will explain about things like giving complete info on a post so you can actually receive an answer and not PO'ing off people that could otherwise give you an answer. There is a whole section in the rules discussing curtesy.

check this out m8, could be somerthing to do with it.
Also make sure you got latest drivers etc etc.
Try disabling the Nvidia/ati speed up setting in bios. hit shift + f2 alt + f3 I think in bios - brings up these options

  • MSI k8n neo (s754)

This weird, i've enabled dynamic overclocking and chosen "Captain" .. isnt this suppposed to increase the FSB? .. it's still 200 ..
    msi k8n neo s754
    a64 3200+

    heya
the Dynamic Overlocking Technology is designed to overclock the cpu/fsb bus to cope with an increased load
i'm not sure what each of the "ranks" percentages are but
    i think "commander" is 11%
therefore, when the cpu is under 100% load, DOT will increase ur FSB(HTT) by 11% to try n finish the job a little faster, i wouldnt recommend using DOT as it can be unstable for this reason
if ur running PC3200/DDR400 ram in ur pc at normal timings and have it set at Auto or 200 in bios, so its running 1:1 with HTT....if u use DOT, the memory will be overclocked as well to keep in sync with FSB(HTT).. now this will introduce new problems cos some DDR400 doesnt like being overclocked and will cause systems to hang or crash....i experimented tightening my RAM timings and cos its cheapo RAM i didnt get very far, too many applications were crashing
so i guess what i'm trying to say is, if u want to experiment with overclocking, i would highly recommend using the Cell Menu in the BIOS, its alot more friendly than just setting DOT to commander.
i loosened the timings on my RAM...and got it to DDR460 running in Sync with the HTT bus
and the bios is more fun to experiment with
i hope i didnt drone on too much
Good luck with what u decide on doing

The moment  i try to switch to Minimal Powersavings the system immediately
    freezes when i press ok.
If i could enable it, it might work, but i cant reach this level.
Any Suggestions? probably BiosBeta 1.5 will fix something?

  • Problems with 64 3200+ on MSI k8n neo platinum.

    Okey here it comes..
I installed everything and all seemed to work okey,  until i threw in the XP install cd and began my install..
in the dos install of windows xp, (when it moves files to the hdd) it stopped and said that there was a problem with a file that were to be copied, i pressed enter to try again and  the install moves on,  this accurs 4-5 times and then it gives me a BIG  "IRQL less or not equal".. Blue screen of death.. (it complains on different files each time i try to install xp, tried 15-20 times)
I have tried to change memory to another Kingston KVR400X64C3A/512 512Mb DDR PC3200 400MHz 184pin Unbuffered CL3 with no luck,
changed hdd, change gfx-card. change psu,  removed all no-need pci-cards..
but still same error, i aint no expert so i might have missed something in bios or something :(
please help me if you can..

Flashing bios with memory errors is a veeeeery bad idea .
Almost guarantied to ruin your bios chip with bad data block.
That this even is suggested with mem errors , well .
You need to resolve the mem errors before doing anything else.
The windows xp install routine is a very heavy user of cpu and memory
and will fail if you have mem errors like you have.
Some things to try is entering bios and change auto settings on cpu voltage
giving it 0.5v more than default .
Set the memorys voltage to vendors max approved voltage
    which for yours is 2.6v +/- 0.1v . So it's safe to set at 2.7v .
    Set timings to cas 3 ,ras 3 ,trp 3 , tras 8 , CMD 2T.
Pushing it firmly down in the dimm socket , sometimes it's not all the way down there even if the plastic lockers snap in.
Disconnect all devices not needed for a windows install ,things can be added later.
Have only the hd that os is to be installed to , one cdrom , floppy , memory and
    gfx card .
Disconnect USB case front connector (cause corruption and strange faults if
    USBOC pin is connected)

  • MSI K8N Neo Platinum with Vapochill Case problems - Help anyone. :)

    Hi all,
Had a bit of a tricky problem and as Im new to this board I have no idea what could be causing this.
    First all all system specs:
    Athlon 64 3700+ Clawhammer
    MSI K8N Neo Platinum -
1 gig Corsair XMS ProL Low Latency Ram (2 x 512mb)
    Nvidia Gefore 6600GT
    1 x WD Raptor 10000rpm HD
    NEC 2500a DVD writer.
    Eye-T 550w PSU.
Vapochill SE Case with installed Vapochill Phase change cooling.
Here are photos of it in its present state, you will notice that it isnt installed in the case at the moment.
The reason for that is because the two wont work together and I want them to so so bad...
So, hopefully someone here can save the day for me - here goes.
I have tested the Motherboard and all other componants outside of the case and everything runs smoothly and there are no problems what so ever, great.
I have also retested the Vapochill case with another motherboard and that also works without a hitch.
The problem comes when I insall the MSI board into the system, all hooked with a really basic setup, PSU, Case cooling, CPU and Ram. Flick the on switch on the power suply and the system turns on for around 1/2 a second then turns off again. I found this strange because it soundnt come on at all until I press the power button.
If I press the power button the same thing will happen over and over.
I have tried a different powersupply and this does nothing at all.
I have checked for shorts and there is no possible way it is shorting on anything.
I have a fan plugged in where the CPU fan would go and this doesnt help.
I have taken it back out and tested it again and it still works ok.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? Are there any secret Bio's menu's that would have an option that would solve this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Glenn

When you are running the MoBo standalone, what are you connecting to the Power, Reset, HDD, etc. pins ?  Are you using the wires from the Vapochill case, or something else ?  It looks like a single cable with an intermittent switch (red/white cable).  I once had a similar sort of problem and it was because I hadn't connected up (the incredibly fiddly) cables correctly.  Other than that, I would have gone for a short of some sort - but you have checked that already, so . . . .
As to the system starting to power-up when you switch on the PSU, I wouldn't worry too much about this.  It seems to happen from time to time with some of my systems - amongst other things, the BIOS can be set to resume to previous state after a power-fail.

  • MSI K8N Neo 4-F Mobo/AMD64 3200+ and OCZ 3200 FREEZE HELP!

I have an AMD64 Winchester 3200+ Processor running on a MSI K8N Neo 4 -F Motherboard. Initially I ran 2 256MB PC-3200 2-3-3-6 modules. When I tried to install Windows it would freeze.. After 3 different attempts I finally got Windows installed, but the freezing continued. Typically it seemed to freeze whenever I installed a Program from CD. For example Office 2003 and was a nightmare. I tried numerous things to stop my problem, but in the end found the only solution was to switch out my two OCZ modules with 1 Muskin 512MB 2.5 3 3 8. Once I did that it ran fine, not as responsive as the OCZ modules but it didnt freeze! So I put the two OCZ modules back in, removed the Muskin and set the timings manually to match those that the Muskin was running on. They seemed fine for awhile, but eventually froze. Once restarted, samething occured. Now I am back on the Muskin RAM. I had planned to order 2 more of the OCZ modules to take myself to 1GB, but obviously that isnt going to work. I am a tad bit stressed out over this. Could the freezing be caused by the memory? I am concerned the memory isnt the issue and that I may have a bigger problem... I am open to ANY advice! I have done alot of googling with no help.

    Hi there,
You'd better install windows again, format the drive and reinstall, and in that instalation it should not freeze, if it does then something is wrong, you shouldn't continue the instalation because one of the most common symptoms of a not stable system is a not smooth win instalation.
Let us know of the mem model number so we can help you further, because some of the memory modules from OCZ need alot of Volts to work stable, it can get to 3.0v.
Let us know the mem model e what PSU you have and Amps on it.
    Be well....

  • Msi K8n Neo & Geil 3200

    ****Below is an old post*****
I have assembled a new pc and what has been happening is when I play games it crashes to desktop. I have tracked down the problem to ram timing. Here are the specs Gigabyte GA-K8NNXP AMD 3200+ Geil 2 times 512 GeIL Ultra PC3200 400MHz DDR, these are placed in slots 1 and 2 (I beleive they should be in slots 1 and 3) I have turned the ram clock back from 200 to 166 and no more game crashes, however I think that means I'm running the ram at 333. Could anyone give me the correct ram timings to run this ram at 400. And also provide me with any other adjustments I may need to make. When I manully change the settigs to the geil ram timmings press f10 and save, reboot the ram timings go back to auto. So I am sure there is something I am overlooking. Your help would be great.
    Cheers Psychnurse
    *****New post*****
an update...I got so sick of this issue I brought a new mobo a K8N Neo MSI....and guess what......if I leave the settings on 200 the games crash and my reboots at odd times, under clock the ram to 166 and bingo no worries stable as.
I'm no guru on timings and over/under clocking but this is crazy.
What are the magic settings to get stability on 200 (ddr400) with this GeIL Ultra PC3200 400MHz DDR. Surely all these pc builders now the settings.
If there is anyone out there using a K8n Neo with Geil ultra pc3200 400mhz......let me know the big secret.
Also have a read of "games crash thread" there must be a f alot of people out there with this problem.
I think its a voltage issue.......got games running for 26 mins at 2.8volts...then crash....If some out there has Geil 3200 ultra with a MSI K8N mobo i would love to know all your settings..Cheers
    AMD643200+
    Geil3200 512 *2
    Leadtek 6800 ultra
    Seagate SATA 80 * 2
    Antec 550
    Audigy 2

If youve not already got it d/load & intall CPU-Z version 1.27.
also check out the Geil USA
Open CPU-Z & select the SPD Tab Select the Memory Slots where your memory is located. The bottom of the screen will show the SPD Timings Table. These are the values Giel have specified as the Timings, it is these that are loaded if timings are left on auto.
    1) Check that the SPD timings are the same for both modules.
    2) Open the Memory Tab - Check that these timings match those in 1) Assuming your settings are on auto they should but sometimes the SPD chip can be misread & cause errors.
    3) If everything matches ok enter bios Check your setting for memory voltage if this is on auto your memory is being underpowered as auto defaults to 2.5v Find the voltage range applicable to your memory from the Geil Site & enter it here.
    4) Use Memtest86+ to check stability, if it fails try tweaking volts up again (don't go above Max recommended.

  • Help with MSI K8N Neo Platinum

HELP please- motherboard MSI K8N Neo PLATINUM: I tried to take away the backplate for the heatsink (on the back side of MB) in order to install the zalman HS beafore i read the forum (use a fan...) and the worst of all happend:
I scratched the back surface!! the scratches are minor, that is 4 scratches half a milimeter long each and not deep but i can see the copper of some lines leading from the memory slots to the processr. My question is : can I try and build the computer on that motherboard anyway or better buy a new one? is there a risk of dammaging other components? oh god what a mistake!

Make sure the new backplate is non-conductive. The backplate for the Hyper 6 has a non-conductive sticker on it. Make sure to keep it on if youve got one... If the lines are exposed even with the back-plate on perhaps you should cover them with some non-conductive (100% non conductive!) tape or something.
Then it doesnt matter if they are exposed, as long as they are ok.
A good tip, which got when i was removing my backplate, is to use a blow dryer to heat it up and the remove it with your fingers. That way youll also notice if it gets to hot
The glue gets sticky at blow drier temps. And pls, dont singe the MB with your blow dryer, you only have to make it hot, and if you cant touch it, how can you remove it with your fingers?
I guess theres no way of telling if you have a serious prob and no way to tell if your cpu will be ok. I guess you could (?) try and start it wíthout anything (cpu, mems) but a PSU, and then, if it (and maybe the PSU) goes "!Pfsssssss!"  or "bang!", youll now you will have to replace it.
I put a screwdriver through an asus board once, and it still worked...

  • Problems with msi k8n neo-2 and xfx 6800 card

is this card incompatible with the msi k8n neo-2 motherboard?
i ve got this mobo last week and when i tried to install the card to it nothing comes on screen, no beeps or nothing, ive changed the power supply, the card works fine on my old pc with both power supplies (old pc was 2500+ amd with epox 8rda+) i ve tried booting up with nothing else connected on the psu except the card itself, it still doesnt seem to work, the new motherboard works fine with my old radeon 9600 pro.
    What can i do?

Thats not what I read (assuming this is the same correct model)
    420W double unit
    DC O/P Load Max
    +5V 42 Amp.
    +12V 16 Amp.
    +3.3V 28 Amp.
    -5V 0.5 Amp.
    -12V 0.8 Amp.
    +5VSB 2 Amp.
Agreed that one is 420W, but is that it or not?

Try raising RAM voltage to 2.7v - 2.8v.

If no go -  Try onboard Audio ( disable / remove Audigy2 )

When i tried to install windows xp pro on both the machines i got the same error. could not copy file. On each try the file was a different one. After hours of trying new things i found that putting the memory in slot 2 on the motherboard  solved the problem, windows installed and booted up as norm. When i moved the memory back to slot 1 the computer would not boot.
I have now left the memory in slot 2 but the computer will still crash every hour.
I am sure this is something to do with the memory but not sure what the problem is.
    Can anyone help.

Can anybody tell me what i should set the cpu fsb frequency to in the bios.
I just read this in the faq
What is the fsb speed of this cpu?
Depending on which FSB you are asking about: The Athlon 64's have the memory controller built in (which was previously part of the Northbridge on the motherboard) which uses up to 200MHz DDR Memory (400MHz FSB) The HyperTransport link from the CPU to the rest of the motherboard runs up to 800MHz. Just to expand on my answer... The HT link is 800MHz, but it's 16 bit in size (2 bytes worth of data per clock) the total bandwidth of the HyperTransport link is 3.2GB in total - 1.6GB sending data to CPU and 1.6GB receiving data from CPU.
