MSI k8n nforce3 s754 no post problem?!

Just had my mobo and cpu RMA'ed and it turned out the cpu was faulty.
So i got a new one(amd64 athlon 3000+ "venice" s754)
But when i installed the new cpu and the mobo(MSI K8N neo nforce 3 platinum s754)
the pc won't POST.I just get 1 long beep about every 5sec and it goes on and on and on.
All fans are spinning,have tried 5 different ramsticks(corsair value s 512mbx3,veritech 1Gbx2)
in different dimm slots.have tried with the mobo outside the rack but to no good.have cleared
CMOS both with battery and jumper.
Could it be that the mobo(bios) won't recognise the S754 venice cpu as it hasn't been out that long?
The cpu code is:ada3000aik4bx if it's any help.
My old system works fine(XP2800+,Asus KV7,asus x800xl)
MSI K8N neo nforce platinum 250gb s754
AMD64 3000+ "venice" s754
Asus x800xl
Chieftech 360w psu

Indeed if its Venice its 90nm and should use less power (see first  pic - hot clickable thumbnail) . But its 754 and I've found that 754 needs more power (when I've build them before using other cores). I can run my rig (see sig) on 18A but its true power and on later versions ANTEC state that they upped 12V to 22A. But I'am not sure they did anythink but change the sticker ! (as I've used both 18 and 22 and can see no diff and S/N are not far off each other) As my PSU in tests outputted 471W. So the question is: can your PSU give you true power and is it enough to power your rig stable ? As you see from the second image the cheiftec 420 managed 417 max output. Most 64 bit systems need a good stable 12V rail as they draw most power from that.
As others have stated try bear bones, even an older GFX card (PCI or AGP with out the extra moler on it) that should draw less power and hopfully POST/boot your rig.
I used a cheap (£20) 550W PSU that stated 30A 12V but with a 3000+ (754 venice), 512DDR, 250GB maxtor, NEC DVD/RW, 6600GT and 3 case fans.  As you can see (first pic) rails were not to bad under load. (had to use an ASUS MOBO as my suppliers stocks of MSI is drying up in 754  + for ths price I could not see any other choice for a budget build that I was asked to do with on a little time)

  • MSI k8n neo (s754)

This weird, i've enabled dynamic overclocking and chosen "Captain" .. isnt this suppposed to increase the FSB? .. it's still 200 ..
    msi k8n neo s754
    a64 3200+

    heya
the Dynamic Overlocking Technology is designed to overclock the cpu/fsb bus to cope with an increased load
i'm not sure what each of the "ranks" percentages are but
    i think "commander" is 11%
therefore, when the cpu is under 100% load, DOT will increase ur FSB(HTT) by 11% to try n finish the job a little faster, i wouldnt recommend using DOT as it can be unstable for this reason
if ur running PC3200/DDR400 ram in ur pc at normal timings and have it set at Auto or 200 in bios, so its running 1:1 with HTT....if u use DOT, the memory will be overclocked as well to keep in sync with FSB(HTT).. now this will introduce new problems cos some DDR400 doesnt like being overclocked and will cause systems to hang or crash....i experimented tightening my RAM timings and cos its cheapo RAM i didnt get very far, too many applications were crashing
so i guess what i'm trying to say is, if u want to experiment with overclocking, i would highly recommend using the Cell Menu in the BIOS, its alot more friendly than just setting DOT to commander.
i loosened the timings on my RAM...and got it to DDR460 running in Sync with the HTT bus
and the bios is more fun to experiment with
i hope i didnt drone on too much
Good luck with what u decide on doing

  • Msi k8n neo platinum ps2 keyboard problem

Hi. I'm having issues with my msi k8n neo platinum motherboard. I've read about 50 posts on these forums regarding the supposed ps2 keyboard issues with recent msi boards. However none of them seems to address my current situation.
Like many  others, when I power up my system the cpu fan spins for like 3 seconds then everything comes to a halt.
I tried many things to get my system to boot and the only thing that works is plugging my ps2 keyboard into the ps2 mouse port and moving the ps2 mouse into a usb port with an adapter.
It seems there's no hope for fixing the problem other than RMA'ing, but I thought I would add to the pile of complaints stacking up against the MSI boards.

if u had read the threads a little more u might have found a solution that seems to have worked 4 many - a usb keyboard usb Keyboard if u go this route dont forget to enable usb kb in bios
Edit: This Thread Summarises the situation PS2 keyboard/mouse causes random shutdowns or doesnt work

  • MSI K8N NEO PLATINUM (RAM/HD problem/mobo problem?) [SOLVED]

    my setup:
    windows xp pro sp2
    amd athlon 64 3200+
    msi k8n neo plat - 7030 - bios 2.1
    x800 xt vid
    sound blaster audigy 2
    kingston valueram pc3200 2x512 cas 3-3-3-8
    ps = antec 430 watt truepower power supply (20 A on 12V)
I dont know if you guys remember my but i created a topic on here a while back about how my keyboard and mouse suddenly stopped working, well that turned out to be that the msi k8n neo platinum just went bad. So i RMA'd it and recently got the replacement board (with latest bios already installed). It worked completely fine for about a day. Well that same day i got it back, i installed a Logitech G7 USB wireless mouse. after i installed it, i began getting numerous windows stop blue screen errrors, even after i removed the mouse from control panel. So i figured i should format because to rule out everything and start fresh. So i did a FULL format and attempted the reinstall windows again. AFTER the format and BEFORE windows attempted the continue installation, i got the same stop error. I figured now this was a hardware problem. So first i tested RAM. I got the latest version of memtest86 and let it run for 4 hours (11 passes) with NO errors at all. Secondly, i got a western digital hard drive diagnostic program to test for failing hard drive and again no problems with that. I still suspected ram so i tried to boot with only 1 stick installed (in first slot), however the PC didnt boot at all (cleared cmos too). So i moved it to the second slot and cleared cmos again and this time it posted but it just hangs at a cursor and does nothing, same thing happened with third slot. I tried this same procedure clearning cmos each time with the second ram stick and got the SAME results. Shouldnt the motherboard boot with only 1 ram stick installed? Did MSI RMA me another bad board? Any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Can you give us what the D-Bracket was showing ie
    R R
    G R
As an example this means "Initializing Keyboard Controller"
You will find this information in the manual page 2-23. (On mine) under Hardware Setup
Also can you please do all your tests with the ps2 keyboard and mouse and for now leave your Logitech G7 USB wireless mouse to one side.
    Russell
for two sticks of ram = RR
                                   GG
for one stick of ram = GR
                                  GG
as for the g7, it hasnt been plugged in at all, i took it out long ago.. as for the ram, the timing was set to 2T, no overclocking, i will try 2.7 v and let you know, but for the record, it has been running at normal voltage settings for about a year perfectly fine.

    Audigy 2 ZX
All brand new and no overclocking undertaken.
My problem is that my system is a nightmare to get to boot/post. After I first built it last week it booted up fine the first time. Seemed stable as I ran through the Doom 3 demo and Thief 3 to give the system a bit of stress. It worked fine for hours CPU was fine, temp about 33-36 degrees at the time. Shutdown and went to bed.
The next day went out to boot up and this is where the problems started to occur.
I hit the power button the case fans spin, cpu coooler fan starts spinning, blue LED on motherboard comes on, the DLED's hang at chipset initiallization. Eventually after hitting the power up button on the case and resetting about ten times the system finally boots up, runs for hours like a dream, will reboot with no problems.
Next day cold boot same problem.
I pulled everything apart, pulled out the cmos Batt etc... Left over night.
I put it together outside the case on insulated material with 1 DIMM of RAM, HDD, Graphics Card. Same problem it eventually booted. Then it reboots fine first go while adding more and more hardware.
This is the problem once it does boot up I can reboot non stop as often as I like with no problems. If I switch off over night, when I go to cold boot in the morning it is a nightmare to get going. Is this something endemic to this board or is it a problem my particular motherboard. To me this inidcates that all the components work and that it is a motherboard problem.
I just want to know as it is only a week old and I can RMA for a new board if I do it in the next few days.
    Thanks.

i'm starting to  think that the problem could be related to the Graphics Card or PCI express slot. I did a second strip down of the system and noticed that when I removed the graphics card it hung on the DLED 'initalize floppy controller" and did not hang on the  'early chipset initialzation' . From BIOS changed the system setup to not to seek for A:floppy, then when I reboot (cold left overnight) without the graphics card it goes through to fully boot, can hear the HD booting up and get 4 green DLED's.(no output without a screen connected of course)  The only trouble is that it virtually won't boot with my Leadtek 6800gt Graphics card at all now, it is taking 20 to 30 goes on a cold boot. However when it does it has been running for hours ok. I notice also that when I updated to the latest Nvidia Drivers, Thief 3 would start crashing in certain sections and rebooting the machine.   Could this be the problem isolated stuffed Card or PCI express slot.

  • K8n neo2 (s939) bios/post problems

    hello guys
i hope you can help me out here
english is my second language so please bear whit me
first my specs in a nutshell:
    k8n neo2 (s939)
    amd64 3500
    geforce fx5800
    the problem is:
every time i turn the power off i need to flash the bios to get trough his post.
if i reboot from windows (not shutdown but reboot) then it runs trouhg his post normaly, but if i shutdown not.
it simply does nothing if i press the power botton.
on the d-bracklet i see 4 green or 4 red lichts so that must be wrong too i think right?
if annyone have a sulution: thank you verry much
ps: i am running bios version: 1.4

By flash the BIOS do you mean reset CMOS? i.e. you switch a jumper for a few seconds?
If so you have the same problem as me in this post: MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum wont boot without clearing CMOS first.
I changed the HT in BIOS to 4x and have been stable ever since.

  • New build: MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum + maxtor 300gb = problem?

Got these 2 products included in a order:
    MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum nForce4 Ultra (Socket 939)
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 10 NCQ 300GB
While checking up on the MB on the MSI site, I noticed a version of the bios (1.2) that says 'support for 300gb maxtor drives'
That's the same HD one I have coming with my order >.<
If the MB I get hasn't got that version of the bios already installed will I have trouble installing the drive?!
I downloaded the bios and it says in the readme not to install it from a floppy disk, so I guess you need a system up and running to make that update in the 1st place. No Idea how to go about this, if the need arises.

    Hi drjugears,
    Welcome to the forum.
Many people are runnimg ok anyway as dope  says.
But it's not an issue you can update the bios via floppy b4 connecting the maxtor.
See Flashing the BIOS for Users using NON FAT file system This is a guide written by msi. Strictly speaking if you folow the instructions you aren't flashing from a floppy the actual update is done on a virtual drive in memory.
if you need a floppy boot disc see Why no floppy for bios flash?
    luck with build
Thanks very much for the welcome and info.
Unfortunately I'll have to wait a while to see...I installed everything....but need some adapter for the 6pin connecter on the ATI card. The power supply came with some 8 pin one. So I need a 4 to 6 pin adapter. Doubt If I'll find one local, so will probably have to wait until monday now to try it out.

  • MSI k8n NEO NF3 250 Platinum Problem

Wacked all my gear in there.. bare minimum, Msi K8N Platinum NF3 250gb, amd 64 newcastle, matrox parhelia 128 retail, samsung spinpoint 160 ata133 and 1.5gb 2700 ddr and it wont boot, i get as far as the old windows "safe mode, safe with promps... windows normally screen" then wen i hit it it goes back to the platinum splash screen, wen i go to boot in safe it stops dead at trying to load viaagp1.sys..
any suggestions.. and im not going to do anything like reformat as i need some of the stuff on teh hdd.. any help would be great
i do alologise if this is in the wrong section.

A full format is your best option.... A repair MIGHT do the job, but I wouldn't count on it's stability / performance afterwards.
If you really need your old data, "resurrect" your old rig outside it's case & back up your stuff - then do the Big Wipe!

  • MSI K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum / HDD_LED Problem

    Hello,
First off I would like to say that MSI boards rock! I've always been happy with them, in fact this is my fourth MSI board. The board is K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum.
Unfortunately, I'm having a problem with this one. The problem is minor, but it shouldn't happen, at least I don't think. The problem is that even though the hard drive activity wire is properly connected to HDD_LED, it is not working with my SATA drive. No light at all!
I read in newsgroups that there are people with this same problem (although not necessarily with this same board). I haven't found a solution to this yet. So my inquiry here is:
    1. Is there anyone else with this exact board with a SATA drive that can confirm his/her HDD_LED light is also not working with a SATA drive?
    2. Does MSI have a fix/solution for this?
    Thank you.

THere is a positive and negative side on those pins have you tried flipping it over?
This has got to be one of the biggest "pains in the a&&" in setting up a new mobo and connecting it to a new case...

hi, all of the sudden, the mouse stop working. i shut the pc down, power up again and after 10 sec in win xp desktop, the same happened.
but now it just wont post! black screen and nothing happens. try switching the 2 mem sticks, reseting bios with the button and removing the batery.
also, the d-bracket shows leds 2 and 3 in red, 1 and 4 are off...
    thanks in advance, gabriel

this also could be the source of the issue,
use only matched memory sticks and either 1, 2 or 4 but not 3
right now are in slots 1-3, you say i should try them in 1-2, 1-4 or 2-4? anyway i've already try 512 in slot 1 only, 1gb in slot 1 only, and no ram at all but nothing changed..

A processer problem most likely. Is there a lot of dust?
no, just the usual. already remove it and installed again jus in case, same behaviour

Do you have any other USB devices?  Are they working OK?
Does your mouse work OK with any other computer?
Without anything else to go on its very difficult to diagnose, but as a guess I would say your mouse is faulty.

  • MSI K8N/Neo4-SLI Cold Boot problem

Sup guys, my system won't restart whenever I crank the HTT to 239+. I heard it has something to do with the nForce4 chipset but I don't know how to fix it. I have the latest BIOS, chipset driver, video drivers, the whole she-bang, but still nothing. I'm currently running my 3000+ Venice @ 2151mHz (239x9) w/ a 4x HyperTransport multiplier (1.450vCore), 512mb x2 Corsair Valueselect @ 166 Mem index (default voltage) 2.5-3-3-8. Thanks.

I used to have corsiar vs and it wont go much higher for you...the stix just crap out after a while.  If you want more, you have to go with more expensive mem stix like crucial ballistix or patriot xblk/other tccd mem.  Just my 2 cents.

*Hercules Oc 3D tweaker: install gives continue auto reboot!!!
    needs save mode to uninstall.

In bios itselve the 12V line seems normal (12.21V)

*The onboard sound is just sad, cracking sound of realy bad quality.
Is the K8N NEO now bad?
Well........no, but MSI realy needs a bios update verry BAD!!!!!

Temps are wrong, OC sucks, not stabel at all, strange sounds coming out of mobo, bad sound from onboad sound, bad support, bad NB cooling, backplate glued on the mobo.......and so on......
I have never had any problems with any MSI boards in the past.. Since I am system builder (maksys.biz) I test tons of motherboards yearly.. I am very happy with MSI's performance compared to other boards (asus, gigabyte, epox, etc).  A few times I needed to contact MSI to fix a few RMA problems and they were prompt to get back to me and take care of my problems.  I am currently using a MSI K8N Plat board. No problems.. Excellent performance.. I am sorry you feel the way you do about MSI and wish the best for you.
