MSI K8N PLATINIUM SLI - TROUBLE POSTING?

To start with my spec's
AMD 3500 S939 'Venice' Stock Cooler
MSI K8N PLAT SLI
BIOS V 3
PSU ANTEC Truepower 2.0 550W (has 2 X 18amp 12V rails)
1gb (2x512mb) OCZ PC 4000 VX GOLD
HDD SEAGATE 200GB SATA
Leadtek 6800GT PCI Express
WIN XP Pro SP2 (OEM)
Pioneer DVD Writer
Audigy 2 ZX
All brand new and no overclocking undertaken.
My problem is that my system is a nightmare to get to boot/post. After I first built it last week it booted up fine the first time. Seemed stable as I ran through the Doom 3 demo and Thief 3 to give the system a bit of stress. It worked fine for hours CPU was fine, temp about 33-36 degrees at the time. Shutdown and went to bed.
The next day went out to boot up and this is where the problems started to occur.
I hit the power button the case fans spin, cpu coooler fan starts spinning, blue LED on motherboard comes on, the DLED's hang at chipset initiallization. Eventually after hitting the power up button on the case and resetting about ten times the system finally boots up, runs for hours like a dream, will reboot with no problems.
Next day cold boot same problem.
I pulled everything apart, pulled out the cmos Batt etc... Left over night.
I put it together outside the case on insulated material with 1 DIMM of RAM, HDD, Graphics Card. Same problem it eventually booted. Then it reboots fine first go while adding more and more hardware.
This is the problem once it does boot up I can reboot non stop as often as I like with no problems. If I switch off over night, when I go to cold boot in the morning it is a nightmare to get going. Is this something endemic to this board or is it a problem my particular motherboard. To me this inidcates that all the components work and that it is a motherboard problem.
I just want to know as it is only a week old and I can RMA for a new board if I do it in the next few days.
Thanks.

i'm starting to  think that the problem could be related to the Graphics Card or PCI express slot. I did a second strip down of the system and noticed that when I removed the graphics card it hung on the DLED 'initalize floppy controller" and did not hang on the  'early chipset initialzation' . From BIOS changed the system setup to not to seek for A:floppy, then when I reboot (cold left overnight) without the graphics card it goes through to fully boot, can hear the HD booting up and get 4 green DLED's.(no output without a screen connected of course)  The only trouble is that it virtually won't boot with my Leadtek 6800gt Graphics card at all now, it is taking 20 to 30 goes on a cold boot. However when it does it has been running for hours ok. I notice also that when I updated to the latest Nvidia Drivers, Thief 3 would start crashing in certain sections and rebooting the machine.   Could this be the problem isolated stuffed Card or PCI express slot.

If you creat a signature (in profile) it will save you having to type your spec's  out each time or us looking for it. Use mine as a template.
What PSU are you using ? Can you list the power output ? (writen on side of psu)
Going from your specs you listed your graphics card is very hungery on power so I would suggest your psu isn't up to the job under load.
Post the spec and we will know for sure.

  • MSI K8N Plat SLI Audio Problems

The "distortion" as you describe it is static interference that goes through to the amplifier, due to the fact that you do not have a correct connection. If the connector does not fit, do not try to force it.
I would leave the case connectors unconnected for the moment, until you get sound through the spdif out. What type of connector is it to your speakers?
you are correct sir! i did some more research with different keywords after i posted my last post and realized that i needed a 1/8" stereo to RCA converter, so i hopped over to radio shack and purchased the little connector for 4 bucks and plugeed it in and walla. Thanks for the help though.
also to the guy with the link to the front case connections, thanks for the suggestion, i had all of my audio ports connected so that wasnt an issue, but thanks for pointing that out.

  • Bios Settings For MSI K8N Neo4/SLI Platinum MB

Well that depends on the installed CPU and memory, doesnt it? So I find that question kinda odd.

  • Various advice needed to overclock cpu using my MSI k8n platinum sli

Hey guys, i recently overclocked my amd 64 3500 cpu to 2.4ghz (from 2.2ghz) i was wondering if any could tell me how high i can get this cpu up to using the msi k8n platinum sli mobo.
At the moment the cpu's temp goes to 40-45 oC.
If i can overclock the cpu some more, can anyone give me detailed instructions on how to overclock it as i'm computer newbie.
i'm using the standard amd heatsink and fan so i know that will comprimise the potentail of the cpu's overclocking capability, as i heard that some people managed to get their cpu up to 3.ghz with a high quality fan, so i was just wondering if anyone can tell me how high i can get my cpu frequency with a standard fan as i really don't want to risk damaging the cpu if i go overboard.
    Thnx in advance.

    Hello,
I have the MSI K8N Neo4/SLI with SB li've! 24 bit sound card on-board and I want to buy a 5. speaker system with 3 digital input 3(2 optic / coaxial).
The digital optic or the digital coax output from the sound card can make 5. output so i can receive with the 5. system
    The system is a Panasonic SC-HT5 (http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs...s&displayTab=S)
    Thank you.

The card cannot create 5., so if the audio you're playing isn't already an encoded 5. (AC3) stream, then the card cannot change that. If you're playing DVDs, they should work fine provided everything is set up correctly (including the DVD software, it should be set to SPDIF/Bypass).

    Dear Customer,
Please have the SLI Bridge set for SLI Mode enable and retest with only the 1 video card into slot #2.
If this works then it indicate the PCI-E slot is fine and the SLI Bridges are the cause.
If it did not work at all then the PCI-E slot #2 has problem which the mb needs to be serviced:

  • MSI K8N Neo4 SLI motherboard: Creative Onboard Sound

    Hello all,
This is my first time on this forum, and I hope you all can help me. I have an MSI K8N Neo 4 SLI board.  It comes with Onboard Creative 24bit sound.
Now, lately I have had problems with it.  One day, it just stopped working.  I thought it was somewhat weird and just reinstalled the drivers.  It worked for a while longer and eventually quit again.  Well, it was time for a reformat anyway, so I thought a clean installation of drivers would solve the problem. Well, it didn't.  Now, I have downloaded the latest drivers from the MSI website, and they allowed the sound to work for one evening, but this morning it is dead again.  My computer says that all hardware is working fine.  I havn't had a bluescreen, and the music plays in the Windows Media Player, I just can't hear it through the speakers.  My speakers do work fine because I have tried many different speakers, and none of them change the dead silence outcome.  I hope my onboard sound is not dead!  Please reply if you know anything else that I can do...

I didn't want to start a new thread with the same topic, usually get flamed everywhere else for that...

  • MSI K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum / HDD_LED Problem

    Hello,
First off I would like to say that MSI boards rock! I've always been happy with them, in fact this is my fourth MSI board. The board is K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum.
Unfortunately, I'm having a problem with this one. The problem is minor, but it shouldn't happen, at least I don't think. The problem is that even though the hard drive activity wire is properly connected to HDD_LED, it is not working with my SATA drive. No light at all!
I read in newsgroups that there are people with this same problem (although not necessarily with this same board). I haven't found a solution to this yet. So my inquiry here is:
    1. Is there anyone else with this exact board with a SATA drive that can confirm his/her HDD_LED light is also not working with a SATA drive?
    2. Does MSI have a fix/solution for this?
    Thank you.

  • MSI k8n nforce3 s754 no post problem?!

Just had my mobo and cpu RMA'ed and it turned out the cpu was faulty.
    So i got a new one(amd64 athlon 3000+ "venice" s754)
But when i installed the new cpu and the mobo(MSI K8N neo nforce 3 platinum s754)
the pc won't POST.I just get 1 long beep about every 5sec and it goes on and on and on.
    All fans are spinning,have tried 5 different ramsticks(corsair value s 512mbx3,veritech 1Gbx2)
in different dimm slots.have tried with the mobo outside the rack but to no good.have cleared
CMOS both with battery and jumper.
Could it be that the mobo(bios) won't recognise the S754 venice cpu as it hasn't been out that long?
The cpu code is:ada3000aik4bx if it's any help.
    My old system works fine(XP2800+,Asus KV7,asus x800xl)
    MSI K8N neo nforce platinum 250gb s754
    AMD64 3000+ "venice" s754
    Asus x800xl
    Chieftech 360w psu

Indeed if its Venice its 90nm and should use less power (see first  pic - hot clickable thumbnail) . But its 754 and I've found that 754 needs more power (when I've build them before using other cores). I can run my rig (see sig) on 18A but its true power and on later versions ANTEC state that they upped 12V to 22A. But I'am not sure they did anythink but change the sticker ! (as I've used both 18 and 22 and can see no diff and S/N are not far off each other) As my PSU in tests outputted 471W. So the question is: can your PSU give you true power and is it enough to power your rig stable ? As you see from the second image the cheiftec 420 managed 417 max output. Most 64 bit systems need a good stable 12V rail as they draw most power from that.
As others have stated try bear bones, even an older GFX card (PCI or AGP with out the extra moler on it) that should draw less power and hopfully POST/boot your rig.
I used a cheap (£20) 550W PSU that stated 30A 12V but with a 3000+ (754 venice), 512DDR, 250GB maxtor, NEC DVD/RW, 6600GT and 3 case fans.  As you can see (first pic) rails were not to bad under load. (had to use an ASUS MOBO as my suppliers stocks of MSI is drying up in 754  + for ths price I could not see any other choice for a budget build that I was asked to do with on a little time)

  • MSI K8N NEO4 SLI - RAM Detection

    Hello,
I'm wondering if my motherboard is faulty or is it my video/cpu/ram that's causing my problem.
Well here's the problem. when I was doing a virus scan using norton antivirus and surfing the web my pc just shut down and restarted.  But when it restarted it won't post and gives me the RAM Detection Error on the D-Bracket and the 1 beep and 1 silence and 1 beep.
I would have to clear the cmos every time it does that.  I ran memtest with no errors on the ram.  I've tried only using 1 stick of ram and my older ram DDR333 stick, also tried different slots, everytime clearing the cmos. With the same result.  One try I had to put the DDR333 RAM in slot 2 for it to post.
When I put the DDR333 ram in it posts for abit. But when I add my DDR400 1Gb dual memory the bios still shows the DDR333 settings. After setting the ram to 2-3-3-6 and restarts it gives me the RAM detection error.
Is this due to a bad motherboard or is it my CPU or could my Video card be causing this or RAM
I don't have another CPU or Video card to see if it is those two that's causing this..
I'd RMA'd the motherboard to get it fixed, and I'm thinking of getting the Diamond Plus but before I do I'm wondering if the problem isn't due to my CPU or Video card. Would hate to buy the D. Plus and have the same problem...
Oh, My BIOS is the 9.10 that msi sent me but shows as 9.0b1 on boot up. Guessing it's a beta bios. Yes I tried the Platinum 3.8 with the same problem.
Sorry if this seems to be confusing....

Venice and san diego cores has no fixed vcore based on their opn numbers as earlier models.
It's variable (new feature) and this is probably causing motherboard vendors some headakes where it
comes to vcore modification and over volting in bios implemetation .
    Ref: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/athlon64-venice_3.html
That appears to be the case...based on this response I got from MSI today!  Looks like a fully compatable BIOS for Venice and San Diego will not arrive until June.....

  • MSI K8N nForce4 SLI-FI sata/ide query

    Hi there folks
My first post on this forum.
I've just built a new system round the above motherboard and am a little confused by what I'm seeing in the Device Manager. I currently have one Hitachi Sata2 drive (running in Sata1 mode by default) and was sort of expecting to see an entry for a Sata controller of some kind. Well all I get under the IDE-ATA/ATPE Controllers, are three Primary IDE channels and three Secondary IDE channels listed. Now I would have expected to see one primary and one secondary IDE controllers and something for the two Sata controllers! Not quite sure what I'm seeing here!!!
Everything appears to be working fine but just a little confused.
The only thing I have done, is uninstall the Nvidia IDE drivers and let windows use the generic ones, as I was getting lots of strange warning message in the Event Viewer and after some digging on the Internet, the consensus of opinion was that you were better off with the Windows IDE drivers (and the warning message have stopped since then)..
    Any input would be helpful.
PS. It's the first system I've ever built myself, so I accept I'm on a bit of a learning curve here.
PPS. The warning messages I was getting were "An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation." and they appeared just after an information message about "NVATA" in the Windows Event Viewer. This tended to happen when first booting the machine and lead to it taking a while to boot. Since removing said driver/s, system boots fine and no warnings.

    Well....
Decided to take a fly-er on this and did the above as I outlined and then tried a cold boot and... all appears well (at the moment) IE. Windows starts up promptly and Windows Event Viewer appears clear (no warning messages ). So as long as it carries on like that, looks like the later Nvidia drivers are the way to go.
Device Manager now looks more like what I expected it to.
IE. Two SAta controllers, one primary / secondary IDE controller and one PCI controller.
Now getting the Hitachi Feature Tool to work was another thing! Took about 6 attempts to get the PC to boot from the floppy disk. Maybe it's DOS being temperamental, or maybe the floppy isn't the best quality. But whatever... finally changed it to Sata-2 (made the assumption Spread Spectrum Clocking should be disabled) and on powering down/up the PC, the Hitachi HD is showing as Sata-2.
The little test the controller runs shows the following:
    for 1.5 - Burst 100.4 and Sustained 64.2
for 3.0 - Burst 140.4 and sustained 164.3 (strange, I would have thought this would be slower than the Burst rate!?)
So looks like running it as a Sata-2 disk is quicker. Now whether this makes a difference in the real world tasks... I don't know.
But a worthwhile exercise I think.
    Thanks again....
PS. On reflection, I think I might have miss-read the "sustained rate" when running it as Sata1. In that case, very little real world difference between Sata1 and sata2 but then again, I suppose that's what I keep reading.
