[MSI-K8N-SLI-FI] Primary PCI-Express slot dead ?

Hi,
Early this year with 8800GT plugged in the primary PCI-Express slot would fail to output the video, so I had to revert to my old 6600GT and it worked fine till now that is. I had verified my 8800 GT on different system and it booted just fine.
Now all of a sudden even 6600GT failed to output the video. So, I tried another slot (courtesy SLI) and the system works fine.
Issue: PCI Express width is shown as x1 instead of x8/16 ?
Is there a way to repair the first slot or force x8 on second slot.
regards,
Prashant

Is the MB chipset fan running OK or is it slow or stopped? Any problems with other things controlled by the chipset?
Yes, chipset fan seems to be running just fine, will have to check the speed though. USB ports are working fine. What else should I check ?

  • PCI express slots -- DEAD ?

    Hey guys :
Following are the specs of my PC
    AMD 64 3200+ 2.0Ghz
    MSI Diamond K8N
    Geforce 7600Gt
    ASUS PSU 440W Max
    1Gb RAM
The problem started last year when all of a sudden one of the PCI slot siezed to output VGA signal. So I began using the other slot. A couple of days back same incident happened and now both slots fail to output VGA signal. The card is same. Im not into heavy gaming, just play fifa 09 and stuff like that so guys any ideas whats going on ? Are the slots dead ? Should I replace the mobo ?
I did remove the dust or any thing like that
Any ideas ? .. Please do give trouble shooting advice too
    Thank You

Can you get hold of another PCI-E card to test in the slots?
If you can, test the graphics card in another system to determine the graphics card isn't faulty.
If you have a DVI connection on the graphics card try connecting your monitor to this, even if through a VGA to DVI connector.

  • P7N SLI (MS-7380) PCI Express slots

I'm planning to install these cards so I am looking for a motherboard that can accommodate it:
    9600GT (operates at x16)
LSI SAS RAID Card (operates at x4)
    USB3.0 card (operates at x1)
I found someone who's selling P7N SLI (MS-7380) so I was wondering if the 9600GT will still run at x16 if I have these installed?
    PCI_E1: 9600GT
PCI_E2: LSI SAS RAID Card (operates at x4)
    PCI_E3: USB3.0 card (operates at x1)

ive got this board. just wondering why ud need a RAID card?

    .

    Hi Charles
Just wondering how you got on with the replacement? Did MSI give any details as to what might have happened or was wrong?
I'm having a similiar issue myself.  My MSI K8N SLI-F board seems to now have a 'tempremental" primary PCI-E slot.  I have a 9800GT card that was working fine for months and then I got no video on reboot after trying to get dual displays up and running.  After much troubleshooting and RMA'ing my 9800GT card I think it must be the slot on the Mainboard itself.  My 6800GS which has a light fan on it compared to the massive glaciator on my 9800GT is working fine but whenever I put the 9800GT (original or replacement) in I get no video on boot but I can hear the computer and HD making all its normal noises and know its getting to the windows login screen.  The 9800GT fan spins up then turns off or sometimes stays spinning.  Both cards work fine in another machine.  After cleaning out the slot and screwing in the card nice and hard it went again and ran all day but after shutting down and leaving it overnight, I got no video on boot again.  My guess is the cooling of the card overnight made it move slightly.  I have repeated the reseating steps and have it going again.  I can only presume the slot itself is now loose or the solder on it is failing or something, or could it be the Power Supply?....  has me stumped.  When the card isn't in just right and I get no video I also get both optical drives ticking / seeking like there looking for a disc about 10 times then the computer kinda internally restarts and it goes again with no video still.  When I have the card screwed in tight like now it doesn't happen.  With the card screwed in like now I pushed the card a little and then turned it on and again I get no video.  Reseat, rescrew and it goes again.... weird.   Any suggestions?  PCI-voltage?  PSU Maybe?  the slot?  something else?
Anyway I don't think I can actually try the 2nd slot as the MSI K8N SLI-FI/ F site says:
Two PCI Express x16 slot (supports PCI Express Bus specification v1.0a compliant)
Normal mode Primary PCI-E slot is compatible with PCI Express x 16
Secondary PCI-E slot is compatible with PCI Express x 1
SLI mode Primary PCI-E slot is compatible with PCI Express x 8
Secondary PCI-E slot is compatible with PCI Express x 8
So I presume I can't get full 16x out of the 2nd slot and looking at it, it only has the gold pins going half way down the slot where as the primary slot has them right to the end.

  • MSI Gaming 9 AC - PCI Express Slots Position

    Hey guys,
Just recently I finished setting up my new machine (even got a problem while updating the BIOS on the mobo, which has been solved with the support from folks of this forum =D) and then after I while using it, I realize that the space between the first and second PCI express slot is just so small, it's my first time running a SLI machine, got two GTX 970 G1 Gaming from Gigabyte and they are so close to each other that after installing some monitoring programs, I can check that the temperature on the first card (the one with no room to breath) goes almost instantaneously to 79ºC~80ºC when playing a high demanding game while the second stays around 64ºC~65ºC, with both cards running at 100% fan speed.
And since the standard thermal limit of the GTX 970 is 79ºC, the gpu clock goes way down from almost 1400 mhz to 1100 mhz to cool it for a while and then boost it again, turn it down to cool it again (and again, again again), there is a noticeable difference of fps while this is happening so I don't know if that is something that is suppose to happen on SLI system or if the cards are really too close to each other, I have check some other motherboards and even the Gaming 7 AC has those two first slots with more space between then.
Is not possible at all to use the third slot to SLI on this mobo to make it work on 8x? There is a solution or some sort of modification to address this? I attached a pics to illustrate it better too.
    Thanks!

Thanks for answering guys, my case is a Corsair Obsidian 750D, so there's plenty of space and also two front in-take fans and one exhausting on the back (I also have a Corsair H100i cooler for the CPU and when gaming, set the fans to maximum speed), in some cases I see almost 20ºC of difference between both cards, yesterday I set the temperature limit a little bit above the standard 79ºC to 82º and while the main card was running on constant 82ºC, the second was somewhere between 62 to 64 degrees, I'm kinda worried about this temps and how it could affect the cards, if they are heating way beyond they should and it if could impact the durability of the physical components, cause a sudden malfunction or literally fry something. Am I worrying too much about it?
It's a shame that it seems to be really difficult to find a XPower AC Z97 board here in Brazil, MSI could have also leave a little bit more of space like the Gaming 7 has, there's a technical reason on why they leave the PCI slots closer to each other on the 9 comparing it to 7?

  • MSI K8N SLI Freezes when using PCIe GFX

Build a new system with K8N SLI motherboard, AMD 64 3200+, Chill Innovation 510W PSU with 20 pin - tried with a 20-24 pin converter - no difference.
My problem is that when i use a PCIe GFX card the system freezes randomly, tried 2 different cards. An Asus X600XT Extreme and Leadtek 6600GT Extreme, but problem is the same. I have an old PCI Radeon 7000 GFX and with this, the computer runs perfect.
Both CPU and motherboard has been changed to a new one - didn't help.
Have installed newest graphic driver and Nforce driver. Tried both 3.0 and 3.1 motherboard bios. Changed HTT to 800, PCIe to 90 (clock generator).
Can it really be my PSU which causes the problem?

  • MSI k8N SLI Platinum - dead??

    Hello,
I have started the PC as per usual. Pushed the power button... nothing. Then again... nothing. Then I swithed off from the switch near the mains entry. and switched on... PC started however I get nothing on the screen. No beeps.
I have an Antec Truecontrol 2.0 power supply, an MSI K8N SLI Platinum (socket 939) with AMD Athlon, 2 GB Corsair TWINX Ram, three HDDS SATA, Raptor 75GB as Primary (C:) and another two WDS. Video Card: BFG 7800GTX+ 256MB OC, PCI - Express.
System has functioned Ok for three and a half years at least. I have replaced the Northbridge Fan from the beginning with a Blue heatsink - I believe Zalman. No temp issues. No overclocking, I am not using any commander modes etc etc.
When I look at the D-Bracket I get Memory Init Error (RED-GReen-Red-Red). I am pretty sure it is not the RAM. I pulled the RAM, used only one stick... same error.
I pulled the video card out. Then interestingly the system reaches the phase just before booting and the D_Bracket shows Floppy Init error (Green-Red-Green-Green). I tried moving the video card to the second PCI -ex - I also reach the Floppy Error point. I put in a crappy PIC-Ex video card - I reach the same Floppy init point - the floppy actually seeks but does not try to read. Unfort I forgot where I put the Monitor adapter thingy so I can;t check if I get anything on the screen with the crappy PCI-Ex video card. Will get it... soon...
I have a hard time determining whether it is the Video card or the mainboard. I have pulled the battery out, left overnight, pushed the BIOS reset... nothing helped. With Video Card in PCI-Ex slot 1, I get the memory init error. With the card in PCI-Ex slot 2 or with no card or with crappy PCI-Ex, I get to the Floppy Init point.
Could it be that at that point I would be getting a VGA error that I cannot see on the screen ? Why then NO BEEPS? Does this Mobo model not beep, just uses the D-Bracket?
It is important - if it is the mobo I am done for, I have to buy Mobo, RAM, CPU... $1,000. If it is the Video card I may find something 1 slot wide and similar to the BFG ...
Can anyone help narrow this please ?
BTW on the screen I get NOTHING, if I pull out the cable the monitor says - check connection, if I plug it in the monitor goes to power saving.
    Thank you Heaps

Put a stick of memory in there of el-cheapo brand.
Those Corsairs you have need more voltage to start if I'm not mistaken.
Found out what the prob was - the BFG 7800GTX was DEAD. RMA-ed the card. the MSI Mobo is Ok

  • MSI K8N SLI Platinum crashed with my videocard

Hi. I don't speak english very vell, so sorry
A bought an MSI K8N SLI Platinum mainboard, 7800 GTX Videocard and I don't know use it with NON SLI mode   If the SLI card there in NON-SLI mode, my pc isn't run. Just black screen, and the D-Bracket is show, that the booting is stopped in memory-control (second LED is red.) If I turn my SLI card for SLI mode, accordingly the PCI-E bus is 8x and my PC is run.
My problem is that, that I don't know run my pc in PCI-E x16
I tried 6 BIOS, but always was this is the problem

First, search the internet for a free translater program and cut n paste.  Second, you need to place the graphics card in the pcie slot next to the cpu.  Third, you need to make sure the SLI switch card is placed "non-sli" with the arrow pointed towards the graphics card.  Finally, you need to make sure your SLI switch card is fully in place so the copper teeth dont show (I made that mistake and my rig didnt boot either).  Just my 2 cents.
    1st -- ok
2nd - the video card is there next to the cpu in 1st PCI-E bus
3rd -- the SLI switch card is placed non-sli with the arrow pointed towards the graphics card.
fin --- well, i have no idea about this, 'couse after i've removed the card, i could not push it back to its place fully anymore, so the copper teeth show up. I also tried to force it with a screwdriver, but it didn't work. but i can turn on the card holder

my problem is that windows reboots in loop and sometims a bluescreen appears i think the problem is with nforce pci system management driver because i get a conflict in windows

    I/O Range 4C40-4C7F not avalible
do somone have a solution for this i will be gratefull

Hi i always had problems with corsair memory since they have to be configured manually to work most stable. What you can do to test memory problems is:
    1. use only one module in first memory slot
    2. set commandrate to 2T
see if that works. If it works fine then you have to reconfigure the memory modules in bios.

  • Tagan 480W and MSI K8N SLI-FI

Just about to install a Tagan 2force 480W PSU into an MSI K8N SLI-FI motherboard. This board requires 3 power connections, the 24pin ATX, 4 pin for CPU and there's a 4 pin molex (PCIE_PW1) connection for PCI-Express VGA cards.
From the Tagan website, I thought that this power supply had a blue 4pin connector to use for this PCIE_PW1 connection. It doesn't, it only has the two 6pin PCI-Express connections.  Can I use one of the white molex power cables that would normally be used for drives?
This PSU also has a GND/RTN grounding cable. Do I put this under one of the screws fixing the motherboard to the case?
    Thanks

    Hello !
Yes, you can use the standart connectors for your VGA Cards, but it should be the only device attached to this power string. Do not use it in combination with other devices as power source for your card. I do not know exactly if your PSU has two 12V Power Rails, but if so, try to combine them to one 12V Rail. There should be a switch on your PSU to do that.
You can install the grounding cable to any place in the case, i would not put it under the motherboard, i suggest mounting it to a HDD cage.

  • MSI K8N SLI - Freezes Randomly - Need Help!!!

    Hi,
Can anybody help me? My PC keeps freezing and sometimes BSOD'ing on me and i have no idea what the hell the reason is. I've tried changing graphics drivers, sound drivers, checked for bios updates and all the usual stuff. I've had a scou around the net and these forums and quite a few people seem to be having this problem and appears to be related to the PCIe Graphics. Not sure if this is the case but a lot of peole report this. One person said it was his audigy card and on removing it the problem went away. But, I don't fancy sacrificing my audigy card for the onchip sound if I can find a work around.
Is it the motherboard at fault with the PCIe interface or the Audigy or something else? If anyone has any ideas it would be fantastic!

I've one problem: SB Li've 24 bit PCI come with LINE-IN and MIC that are the same jack.
