MSI K8N SLI Platinum Vs MSI K8N Diamond SLI

What do you guys think as the better motherboard?

Better check my post on Antec 2.0 ps not working on this forum as well as on the AMD forum here
http://forums.amd.com/index.php?showtopic=47162
It's pretty certain the new Antec PS won't work.  Antec wrote me back confirming (all in the above posts)
I'll have to check the Diamond specs, as I had been told several times they were the European version of the Platinum, so now I don't know which one to get.  I'm building a similar system as yours

  • MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum or MSI 6600GT PCI-E ?

    Dear Sirs,
    I've just bought a MSI NX6600 TD GT 128MB PCI-E and
    Motherboard MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum.
I Think that one of these is defective bacause WinXP
can't work with MSI original drivers, MSI old

I think that i've tried almost everything and this
card only works badly with VesaSave driver (Generic

Could a defective video card works ?
Is it possible that the problem is the Motherboard ?
    Any idea ?

  • Dual Core Center- MSI P6N SLI Platinum and MSI 8800 GTS 640

I have both the MSI 650i MOBO and the MSI 8800 GTS vidcard. When using an Asus P5B Dlx MOBO and this vidcard, Dual Core Center was installed and displayed the information for the videocard and allowed a mild OC. Now with both MSI products in the case, Dual Core Center only displays the information on the MOBO-- no 8800 GTS information. The tab at the top for the VGA does not bring up anything.  ??? I have tried installing the version on each one of the disks that came with each piece of equipment again and it doesn't seem to make a difference, it doesn't work. I downloaded the most recent version of the utility from the MSI site and still get only the MOBO information. How do I get the display for the video card.
Or since the MSI utilities typically are listed on the forums as not being the greatest, what else can I/should I be using instead?
    {I'll put this in the graphics forum too as it hits both areas...}

Running a P6N SLI Platinum and a MSI 7900GTO with Dualcorecenter 2004 and everything is ok.
Never installed any driver from the MSI CD which comes with the board or graphics card. All drivers are downloaded
    from Nvidia.
Maybe the 8800 series is not supported yet.

  • MSI P6N SLI Platinum - Two Video Cards Non SLI

I have a P6N SLI Platinum that I am trying to get two video cards working at the same time, but not in an SLI configuration. I'm wanting to use them for 3 monitors at the same time. The cards are both Nvidia 8800GS, but one is by EVGA and one is XFX. Both cards work individually, but when trying to use both of them at the same time, Windows will not recognize them. I am currently running Windows XP Pro. Is this type of configuration possible with this motherboard? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

i think you will be told by msi to be able to use two card on one mobo you have to have sli enabled.

  • Changing from K8n neo4 SLI Platinum to a K8n Diamond Plus

Is it a  or  to try and just change  components and everything over and hope it boots up or get some help here in the forum for my answer? I am perplexed , one techie says it probably will need formatting and reinstall :biggthumbsdown:and yet another says tht they are both nf4 chipsets and should be able to boot up . What do you all think will work for me ? Maybe one of you has a solutin for me that is better than formatting and reinstall.  Thanks for your help

yeah , the platinum won't give me 16 x video with the sli switch card in non-sli mode.
that's strange, it is the second time that i've seen this problem on the forum, but i never had any problems with mine. however, i thougth that you were going for the extra memory voltages that the diamond plus can provide, because today's graphic cards are still far away from taking up even the 8x pci-e bandwidth. but if you got a good deal, go for it. both of them are excellent mobos.
you probably won't need a clean system install, but i would suggest that you do it anyway. unloading old drivers and replacing them with new ones will always cause the system to slow down, even if you won't notice. that's why, for a new build, it is always suggested that you go with a clean OS install.

  • Can't open BIOs Set-up, K8N SLI Platinum, after re-flash

I used the USB Bio flash tool from the forum to re-flash the BIOs on my K8N SLI Platinum board to the latest BIOS from the MSI site, specs below.
After the re-flash, which seemed to go okay, I cleared the CMOS (turned off and unplugged computer, pushed the clear cmos button for about a minute), and re-booted.
I get a checksum error, no floppy found. I don't have a floppy drive in any case. But then I am unable to enter the bios. Pushing delete at boot gets me a screen that's blank, save for a cursor in the upper left corner. I can't enter anything from there, ESC key doesn't do anything. So I have to reboot.
I can get to the POST screen and pressing F1 allows the system to start and get to Windows, which seems to run okay. System shows that the new BIOS is installed. I just can't get into it to re-set to default settings.
If I turn off the computer, I get the checksum error again and in Windows clock and date have to be reset. But if I just reboot I just have to go through the no floppy found, then push f1 to get back to windows which has retained settings.
I tried  doing the flash procedure again and got same result. I haven't tried flashing back to the old BIOs yet. MSI's site only lists the most recent BIOs, my preference would be to try a different one, but not as old as the 2005 version that was on there.
Hopefully someone can tell me something obvious that I'm missing here.

I'd also like the RAM to run at at least 333, rather than the 200 something it runs at with this BIOS.
Check this with CPU-Z at "memory tab" ==> http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
BIOS post screen info can be incorrect., or current older BIOS by 200MHz it may means 400DDR In all cases its cosmetics,
the way of showing real of effective freq. can be changed in future version.
Also with four sticks it should be shown as either 333 or 166, not 200 or 400
Best check with CPU-Z how they are running

It may now be possible to put something faster in there, but I don't know that for sure. But the 4000+ should improve performance a bit.
Such old CPU's can't be found easy in present days, also its not good investing to invest in old stuffs.
You want W7 and such, changing to the best CPU wont improve much the performance in overall..
Soon or later you have to change it, then this and eventually "newest" CPU which you gonna get will became useless.

  • MSI P7N SLI Platinum and OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 SLI-Ready Edition

    Hello,
I have a MSI P7N SLI Platinum nForce 750i SLI motherboard and I would like to inquire if it is fully compatible with OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 SLI-Ready Edition memory? Firstly, I do not seem to get the correct timings with the default settings, speed is not very good, after 5 hours of running Memtest86+ there was 30 errors. I have never had the memory crash and games seem to run fine, but the memory feels much slower than it should be. Is the memory supposed to work fine with this motherboard and I'm just imagining everything? I don't know if I'm also supposed to be worried by the errors Memtest86+ returned?
Thank you in advance for any help.

    If memtest returned errors, yes
Well, there does not have to be a problem with the memory just because it returned errors. There could be many other explanations why there are errors.

Jacobl, please post full system specs.  Read the >>Posting Guide<< to get an idea of the details you should provide.
How many modules of what capacity do you have?  What are your current RAM-related BIOS settings?
If you have more than one stick of RAM, please test each stick seperately with memtest86+ and see if the errors are caused by one of the sticks only.  Otherwise there is no way to tell if there is a compatibility problem or just a faulty memory stick.
Please post a link to the OCZ product site and also a screenshot of the CPU-Z "SPD" tab.
    I have this memory: http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/memory/ocz_ddr2_pc2_6400_sli_ready_edition_4gb_dual_channel.
This is the rest of the components as instructed by the forum post you linked to:
    Intel E8200
    MSI P7N SLI Platinum
    OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 SLI-Ready Edition 4GB Dual Channel
    Gigabyte Geforce 8800GT 512MB PCI
    500GB Western Digital SATA
    SATA DVD burner
    Windows XP SP3
    Antec 500W PSU
I usually troubleshoot components step by step - eliminating all possible reasons until I have found the solution. My first step was to post here to find out if there are any known compatibility issues with the motherboard and memory. I adjusted the memory timings with a slight overclock because the motherboard did not load the default timings by default. I will start by adjusting the BIOS settings, check if the memory is inserted into the right DIMM slots and then test the memory sticks one by one. But to answer my own question: I think the motherboard and memory should have no compatibility issues and it must be something else.
Quote from: Freestate on 07-September-08, 23:06:36
I have the OCZ 6400 Fatal1ty modules 2x2 GB that is very similar of the ones you ask.And they are running perfectly but i must set the epp latency and voltaje values in BIOS! The simple modules of ocz are in the memory compatibilty list i thought that the SLI and Falal1ty modules are just the same with a little boost.
I had to set the right timings also. As far as I know, the SLI and Fatal1ty modules are probably the same, just with a little boost. I think it would be very strange if a module with the name "SLI-Ready Edition" and a Nforce 750i motherboard would not be compatible together.
Anyway, any other advice on what steps I should take? I assume by now that the motherboard and memory should work together without problem. Sorry if I started out bad by not following the posting guidelines on the forum.

  • REBRANDING?? I have different product than box says!! Neo4 or SLI Platinum!?

ok. I have been wondering now for a while why my SLI only works with one set of drivers (very old ones 66.77). I got to looking around and found a site http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/other/111 that introduced to me that there are a few different mainboards with very similar and in my case, contradicting names. There are 3, the K8N Diamond with SLI, the K8N Neo4 Platinum, and the K8N SLI Platinum. Well, I bought the K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum from newegg and it came in the box. Here is a picture of the box it came in:
It clearly says K8N Neo4/SLI on it. However, when I tried to update the BIOS to possibly fix the problem with the SLI 1 driver thing, I found out that I have the incorrect BIOS version. This version: W7100NMS v3. Here is a pic:
This made me wonder, because this is a 7100, and not the 7125 as MSI's website says a Neo4 Platinum SLI is. I mean, it says Platinum when in starts up:
So, I took a closer look and examined the mobo itself and found a little sticker on the mobo that says this:
This is the problem, because of these three sites http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/other/111, the board that I have is a combination of 2 of the boards.
The picture of my board and the features exactlly matches the K8N SLI Platinum on this site http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=641, HERE IS A PIC (LOOKS JUST LIKE MINE EXCEPT MINE HAS A STICKER THAT SAYS K8N NEO4 PLATINUM however the name of my board is a combination a few of the boards. (Namely this one (the neo4!!) http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=637.
This is crazy , so I don't know what happened here. I got the board I was supposed to get because it has SLI and all the other stuff, but it was listed under the name of neo4 platiunum SLI. Even the American MSI site has it named Neo4 Platinum/SLI here http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K8N_Neo4_Platinum/SLI&class=mb
Ok, so maybe the boxes can be used with both Neo4 Platinum and SLI Platinum? Maybe the sticker on my motherboard is wrong and that is causing all of the massive confusion for me?? MSI is still mislabeling the board in the bios section and on their american site, the tw site is fine I guess, just the name is not the same as mine.
Does anyone understand what I am saying? Can anyone make sense of what I am saying and find an answer? I still can't get SLI to work with anyhting other than v 66.77 drivers. :-(

Okay, maybe I'm just too tired, but I think you're confusing things in your own head a bit, to be honest.
The MS-7100 IS the Neo4 Platinum SLI.  It will have two x16 PCI-E slots and the SLI card in between them for setting the slots for x8/x8 in SLI mode, or x16/x1 for single graphic card mode.  The MS-7125 is the Neo4 Platinum, which I do believe is the NForce 4 Ultra chipset board.  It has one x16 slot, and if memory serves a x4 PCI-E slot, and one x1 PCI-E slots.  It's not an SLI board, the BIOS for the MSI Neo4 Platinum is NOT for the MSI Neo4 Platinum SLI.
    From MSI's USA site:
    K8N Neo 4 Platinum SLI:  http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K8N_Neo4_Platinum/SLI&class=mb
    K8N Neo 4 Platinum:  http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K8N_Neo4_Platinum&class=mb
Those are, best of my knowledge the two NForce 4 boards so far released for North America.
NOW, the K8N Diamond was released everywhere else other then North America.  It is the same board as the K8N Neo 4 Platinum SLI except for some minor details.  I think there's a sideways blowing fan for the MOSFET heatsink near the CPU, the K8N Diamonds may (or may not) have came with a wi-fi card, and the K8N Diamond also includes a little card with log-on details for a forum only open to people who buy that board.  It's otherwise the same as a k8N Neo 4 Platinum SLI...I should know, I have a k8n Neo 4 Platinum SLI, and I put on a beta BIOS for a k8N Diamond, runs fine.
As an aside, mine has a sticker for the name badge instead of being silk screened on also, right above the primary x16 PCI-E slot.  Never pulled mine off, but I wouldn't be shocked if it says K8N Diamond under it.
Why they did a Diamond for the rest of the planet, K8N Neo 4 Platinum SLI for North America, I don't know...but I've seen that a lot with film cameras and some digital...a Canon EOS A2e in the USA is a Canon EOS 5 for the rest of the planet. If you go to Canon's online museuem, they show where they rebadge the same camera body for different nations...in some cases, you'll even see 3 rebadgings, a North American, an European one and an Asian one, all otherwise the same camera except for a minor feature.
So anyway...never seen it with motherboards until now, but I guess they are starting to do the same, make variants of the same exact board for each major market.
EDIT:  Forgot to mention, but as I said, I also have your motherboard.  I'm using beta Graphics driver 71.20, got it from www.guru3d.com, and it works well for me.  Tried a couple others there, and they were iffy, so I'd suggest 71.20 personally.

  • Screen Freez (memory expert needed) P6N SLI platinum

on my pc when i install the first two ddr2 800 and one ddr21066 everything is fine but when i install the fourth ddr21066 the system either freezes at boot up or while doing something. can any expert in memory tell me which setting in bios i have to adjust so i do not get this freeze up (mouse andkeyboard) , your comment will be much appreciated.(this is definitely a memory related issue)
    MSI P6N SLI Platinum
    Q6600
MSI 256 graphic card ATI HD 2400
    2 GB crucial  DDr2800  CL6   and two DDR2 1066 CL5
    mastercoll 500Watts
    window xpsp2

im with Jack and MSI doesnt support 1066MHz on the P6N SLi Plat.
    Read here:
    http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=prodmbspec&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=&cat3_no=&prod_no=1140#menu
Fifth line from top, 800MHz is max.
And yes i know it says so on the box, that 1066 is supported, but it isnt.
But if you think you'll have a faster computer, well it isnt noticeable, that is if you have any gain, cause usually those high MHz DIMM's are on higher latencies then lower MHz DIMM's. If you gain anything its a few nanoseconds we are talking about here.
For instance 1066MHz 5-5-5-18, is as fast as 800MHz 4-4-4-15
Also DDR2 1066MHz is usually overvolted 800MHz memory and thus will have a shorter and sometimes more unstable lifespan.
Furthermore if you use 4 sticks-o-ram on this board, your limited to 667MHz, otherwise your memorycontroller would be overflooded with too much data.

  • Very, very low sound from MSI K8N SLI Platinum

The sound from my MSI K8N SLI Platinum nForce 4 is so low that i must set the volume control on max and the speakers on max to hear anything. I tried other speakers with the same result. The speakers are amplified.
    What can i do?

Well for a start you could search the forum as this problem is now well known. I'm not getting at you but I know how frustraing it is wanting someone to respond with an answer, and you don't have to wait if the problem has already been discussed!
The problem is that MSI decided to specify that the 24 pin supply must have -5v to support the creative chip. This is in contradiction to atx 2.2, and other PSU specs for 24pin supplys, which say the pin in question is NC (no connection).
What you need is a dual standard 20/24 pin supply.
Theres is a FAQ about this on the diamond forum, but I'm not sure if unregistered Platinum SLI users can read them anymore!
According to the FAQ MSI are promising US diamond users the chance to RMA their diamond boards when modified boards whcih don't require the -5v supply are availble. This isn't much use to us european Platinum SLI users.
I have a Tagan 480w which is dual standard 20/24 pin supply.

  • MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI sound needs -5V; newest Antec 550W has no -5V rail

I came within a whisker of ordering a non-returnable  3700 Venice, MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI mobo and an upgraded Power Supply, Antec's newest 550W PS the TP2-550 EPS12V ($117).  This has dual 2x24pin 12V 19A rails and is touted as the new V2.0 EPS12V/ATX12v compatible power supply for high performance SLI systems.  By accident I came across a page at MSI for this mobo
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mai...ail.php?UID=641
At the end is this warning:  MSI Reminds You...
    • For this model, you must use a Power Supply which has a -5V pin supply. Also, the users manual which I downloaded on Pg 2-10 says the same thing
The above Antec PS specs do not  show a -5V rail, nor does an Enermax 600W I looked at.  The V2.0 specs for ATX12v which added 2x24pin 12V rails dropped -5V rail from the spec and it appears MSI is not conforming to the spec (See Antec response at end) None of the web sites selling these PS & mobos contain any warning.  I vaguely recall from a forum a while back it may have something to do with the Soundblaster system in the mobo.
    http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=22551 (click specifications)
Isn't this a major showstopper which is going to cause a lot of grief for those of us upgrading to SLI systems using this mobo and upgrading our PS to the newest & best power design?  We won't know the PS won't work until we build the system.
    Regards, Ron
    Antec reply to me:
    >>>>Thanks for the link. Since MSI's website does state the motherboard needs the -5v, the True550EPS12V will not work with this motherboard. The Standard (http://enhanceusa.com/documents/atx12v_v2.01.pdf) has removed the use for the -5v rail and it is no longer needed. MSI has not manufactured that motherboard to the Standard. Finding an ATX12V v2.0 power supply with the -5v might be hard to find. You should contact MSI for a compatibility list of power supplys that were tested to work with the K8N SLI Platinum.

Wow!!  syar2003 thanks for that post.  I've spend an hour going through it &  fasteddies links.  Now I are a power expert.  The dual rail argument is enough for me to go back to the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI with one of the single rail PS -5V units listed by fasteddie. The only question left now refers to computerpro3  recommendation on ultra power supplies for SLI
    >>I quite simply wouldn't dream of putting anything else in my machine. Keep in mind, this section is for 2x 6800 models, not the 6600's which most any good psu will handle (like Antec Neopower, ocz 520, etc). . Pc Power and Cooling 510 Deluxe SLI edition (refer to list)
    2. Zippy/Emacs 550-700w models
    3. OCZ 600w (personally I would get the pcp&c for the price, but it's been proven here, so I'll be fair...).
These are really high end, expensive and only 3-4 choices. Since I'm getting one 6800GT and eventually another & possibly eventually a 4800 X2, I was hoping the OCZ 520W would do it but computerpro3 says Powermaster 520 isn't good enough for SLI.  I found that there is an OCZ 600W ATX12 dual rail which surprisingly has a -5V rail needed for K8N Neo4 SLI Soundblaster.  Will this meet computerpro3's preference for a high end PS for SLI systems even though I'm losing the 1 rail advantage.  Maybe the 600 Watts just overwhelms the 1 rail/2 rail question.
Thanks again for the teriffic help
    Regards, Ron
Wondering what you settled on.  I got the Antec TP550 and it's flawless on the board.  I even have the older 20pin model which works perfectly (including sound).  If you really wanted what I would consider to be a top dog (pcpower and cooling), and find the -5v rail missing, all you have to do is place a phone order and request they add a -5v rail.  It's a minimal cost and a total solution for having everything.  Just my $0.02
