MSI K8T and 3400+ HUGE problem

I'm in computers since 1993 and I've never had a single problem I was unable to deal with. But my last 4 days have become a nightmare  . I guess it's finaly time to ask someone for help.
So I descided to make an upgrade and got myself a MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R motherboard and a AMD 64 3400+ Clawhammer CPU. The expected from me 10-minute long upgrade operation became as I already said 4-day long and I still don't see light in the tunnel.
So what the problem is - I put together the hardware but when I pressed the power up button I got "Bios not installed" message at start up along with "CMOS settings wrong" and "If you have built SATA Raid array prevoiusly go to p20378 SATA controller set as raid".
Press F1 to enter setup
Press F2 to load defualt values and continue
If I go into bios and set the time etc. and reboot the system it hangs. The PC seems to reset but the monitor shuts down so I don't know if the PC is hanging or I'm losing the signal to my monitor?
If I press F2 Windows XP loads up fine but I can not change my agp setting etc. as the system fails to boot after saving bios config and I have to clear the CMOS using the jumper in order for me to restart the machine. When I shut down the machine in XP I still have to clear the Cmos in order to boot.
Even if I'm willing to clear the CMOS every time I want to turn my PC on there's still another problem. After eventualy Windows XP loads the CPU is running on rediculous 800 MHz instead of 2200 MHz. The problem is the multiplier which is set on x4 and won't move from this possition. The problem is not Cool'n'Quite because I don't have the software for it installed under Windows XP. And using the BIOS default settings by pressing the F2 button in the begining I guess is turning the Cool'n'Quite off in the BIOS.
I updated the BIOS and all the drivers to the last from the MSI webite using the last version of Liveupdate 3.
I even tried changing the Cmos battery even though the MoBo is brand new. Still same thing.
Pleaseeeee give me some ideas of how to sort the problems out. I'm really geting MENTALY unstable

Hello again and thank you for the quick respond. I'll start with the system specs first:

Now to answer on your questions 1 by 1.
First of all the fisrt thing to do after the software war was to change the Cmos battery with a new one and try - no good - still the same problem.
Second - The PSU I belive is sufficient. And Yes I have the 4 pin/12 V power connector for the CPU power connected.
The D-Bracket - after I start the computer it gets to the screen with the F1 setup or F2 load default and continue. As I said before if I press F1 and make all the BIOS settings as time, date,  sequence etc. and press Save changes to BIOS and Exit the PC seems to reset but the monitor shuts down. At this time D-Bracket indicates "Early Chipset Initialization" (Upper left light in green and the rest in red) and stays like this forever. After I clear the Cmos it starts again and it gets to the same screen with the message "CMOS settings wrong" and the 2 choices F1 setup or F2 load default and continue.
Fourth -  I don't have any SATA drives at all.
About memtest - I got the banks of RAM from my WORKING PC and just installed them the new MoBo. And because one of them is 333 DDR I descided to remove it and try with only the Corsair one which is 400 DDR. I tried and vice versa too - still the same problem.
As I said before if I choose F2 and load the default BIOS settings Windows XP loads and the PC is stable - no random resets or any unstability problems whatsoever. Problem is the CPU is working on only 800 MHz - because of the x4.0 multiplier.
That's all I can say. Please give me some advise - I haven't had normal sleep for 5 days already - I just can't accept the fact that I can't manage to sort out my problem. Thanks again!

  • MSI K8T Neo2 slow SATA problem

    Hello members,
I do have a MSI K8T Neo2 mainboard with Via chipset. The board supports SATA 150. AFAIK this means it should support transfer rates up to 150 MB/s.
Now Ive bought a SATA3 SSD with over 500 MB/s. Because SATA 3 is downcompatible to SATA 1 its working so far.
The only problem is I expected 150MB/s but I do only get about 115 MB/s with benchmark programs like HD Tune and AS SSD Benchmark in sequential read.
I do have the latest drivers and bios updates but it seems MSI SATA controllers is very slow.
Can anyone help me getting it faster?

    Thank you.
Does this mean in praxis I dont get 150 MB/s ?
Is this general or only MSI specific?

I've had one KVR400X64C25/512 and it have worked like a charm. Now I've bought another one (total 1gb).
When I've inserted it and start the computer I only get the CoreCell logo scren, it do not boot correctly.
    AMIBIOS is version 3.21a
    I've tried the following:
    * run only the new memory [works]
    * run only the old memory [works]
    * DIMM1 + DIMM3 [only CoreCell screen]
    * DIMM1 + DIMM2 [only CoreCell screen]
    * DIMM2 + DIMM3 [only a black screen]
    what should I do?

A PSU is rated to run at +/-5% and that is well within it's rating. As for wether ists big enough there is no way we can say as you still did not give full system specs.
If it won't run with the third stick of RAM then pull it out for the moment and see if the system will boot again. If it does then during post you will see a Bios version listed. That board only supports Bios versions to 2.2 at the moment so please also list what actuall Bios version you have.
Ok, have booted with one instead of two sticks (one works, two don't, do not have three sticks)..
AMIBIOS A6702VMS v2.2 released 030405. The autodetect settings (at startup): Clock = 400Mhz, CAS 2.5 which seems correct.

  • MSI 8500GT and Viewsonic 24" Problems

I have a MSI NX8500GT-TD256EH (GeForce 8500GT) connected to a ViewSonic VX2435WM. The monitor has a HDMI input and I am using the included DVI to HDMI cable. The native resolution is 1920x1200. I'm running Vista 32-bit with 163.69.
Before I load the Nvidia drivers, the picture looks normal. However, once I load the drivers, the picture becomes distorted (blurry text, messed up colors, etc). When I look at the resolution notice on the monitor's OSD, it says it is running at 1200p. Before the Nvidia drivers are installed, it says it is running at 1920x1200.
I've looked all over the Nvidia control panel and I believe the software thinks the video card is connected to a HDTV, rather than a monitor. It shows that it is being connected via HDMI, even though the output on the video card is DVI.
I have connected the monitor to some other other computers and it works fine on both a Radeon 9600 and a MSI 8600GT. They are all connected the same way: DVI output from video card into HDMI input on monitor. When it is connected to these computers, the monitor's OSD correctly recognizes 1920x1200 and the Nvidia control panel shows it is connected via DVI.
I have tried a few different versions of the latest ForceWare drivers and also tried BETA drivers. Right now I am running 163.69.
Any suggestions on what I can do to get a clear image? Right now the only thing that works is uninstalling the Nvidia drivers and using the standard VGA drivers from Microsoft, which obviously isn't an option.

There's a slight chance that the nVidia driver can't read what modes the screen can display - although it seems unlikely.
I had problems with an NEC HDTV (1366 x 768 native resolution), which would work perfectly with a 1360 x 768 analogue VGA input, but if I tried the DVI-D input, the card (7300GS) sent out 1280 x 768, and the picture panned when the cursor went off screen. This was nVidia's response...
Thank you for contacting NVIDIA Customer Care. NVIDIA GPUs allow resolutions depending on a monitor EDID. An EDID is an electrical signal sent by a monitor/tv which tells it which modes it supports. While set top players designed specifically for HD modes may not need this, PC's do since they support many more types of video display modes and to prevent damage to a display, will only send out a signal that a monitor tells the graphics card it supports. An HDTV generally only accepts HD signals through the DVI or HDMI input and therefore it's EDID through this input only accepts HD resolutions such as 720p (1280x720). However through your VGA input, it will allow different resolutions and therefore the EDID that the HDTV sends to the graphics card through the VGA input is different from that of the HDMI/DVI output. This is why the graphics card gives you different options depending on which input you have it hooked up to. If you wish to use your HDTV for only movies, we recommend using the DVI input however if you will be using it as a PC monitor where you may need to read text or view small objects, then it is recommended that you use the VGA input which will allow you to run without any scaling. Unfortunately, there is no workaround for this situation as everything is working as designed.
Sometimes the technology is too clever by half!
However, this doesn't explain your problem if you can get it to work with a different card, but the same driver.
The only other thing I can think of is that the monitor isn't mapping the incoming pixels to the display pixels properly, although that should only apply to analogue inputs, since with DVI/HDMI, each pixel value is sent as a binary number, and it's position is inherently defined. With analogue signals, there's no separate clock signal to tell the monitor exactly when to sample each pixel, hence the Clock and Phase adjustments.
Maybe it is the HDCP nobbling the resolution - if the monitor doesn't tell the 8500GT that it supports HDCP, the 8500GT might decide to throttle back the resolution. Grrr!
Probably not much help I'm afraid, maybe someone else has some ideas.
    Cheers

  • MSI K8t NEO + Audigy Boot Problem only when power is unplugged on the PSU

I ran into a really weird problem today.
I switched the ps off by reaching back and pressing the button. I repress the button to power on the ps, then I click on the button in the fron of the case to power up the machine. System keeps rebooting itself every 1 sec. Bracket shows 4 red lights. In the manual, it says it means bad cpu. I remove the audigy and it boots fine. I install the audigy, 4 red lights.
So, This time instead of turning the puter off by using the button on ps. I used the button on the case by holding it down for 5 seconds. I reboot and puter boots normally.
So the problem is, if i turn the puter off by using the button on the PS and with audigy in the syste. Nothing on screen, and puter keeps rebooting itself every one second. Solution is to turn the puter off by using the button on the case.
Has anyone ran into this problem? I have never had this kind of problem. It is really weird. Any feedback is apreciated.
Oh and it is only with audigy. I tested this with original live, and also other PCI cards like nic, and another cheap sound card. Non of these cards showed this problem.

    Cavemankr!
I never knew you could shut down the computer by holding down the start button for 5 seconds.... well I've never really had the need to...until I got this K8T Neo job. I wondered why it wouldn't turn off when I just pushed it. I've been using the PSU switch with these problems.
Yep! She booted right up. Audigy back in action. I also realized I had my PC hooked straight in the wall (while checking to see if my surge protector was working this weekend), so turning off the surge protector wasn't cutting power to the cheapo PSU.
So put me in your camp!
I'll just plug the PC straight into the UPS and keep power fed to the Enermax. I hope that was the cause of my keyboard/mouse cold boot problem also.
I'll assume the cheapo PSU will behave similarly. I don't really want to go through the swap again.
    I wonder why that happens!

    Hi guys,
    System
    MSI K8N Neo Platinum
    AMD 64 3200
Enermax 600w (2*12V rails, one at 18, the other at 17)
    WinXP, Dx9c
    Other system components 1xSeagate 80gb SATA, 1xLiteon dvd/cd-r
    512Mb Kingston Ram (1 stick)
Used MSI Live to update board bios to latest as well as nVidia chipset drivers.
    Asus Geforce4 Ti4200 128mb
    Doom3 runs without a hitch,
UT2004, Everquest both are displaying serious graphical problems including missing textures, shearing, alot of  flickering
Dxdiag performs all tests without any errors, have yet to try 3dmark.
Tried changing AGP to 4x and disabling fast write, together and seperatly, graphical concerns only seemed to worsen.
I have already upgraded to the PSU mentioned above as the Antec that i was using wasnt up to the task, this allowed the 3d games to actually run.
So, any ideas on what I should be trying next? It seems that Open GL games are performing normally, whereas directX games are causing trouble.
    Josh.

    Thanks vlovich,
I have tried the nvidia drivers v61.76  and 61.77 and also tried the beta v62.11 and v62.20.
I have not oc'ed the video card at all, tho winXP is reporting it as running at 8xagp in the device manager applet. When i modified the agp speed in the bios to 4x the problems "seemed" to get worse so I put the setting back to auto.
I haven't attempted the asus drivers, so I will give those a go.
    Josh.

  • MSI K8T Neo FIS2R - Memory problem???

I have bought myself a second stick of ram for my computer, being careful to make sure it was exactly the same brand and model.
In spite of this I now get random bluescreen errors of varying types, the first was PFN_LIST_CORRUPT and the latest:
    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA
    STOP: 0x00000050 (0xC5AD0D7C, 0x0000000, 0x8050298A, 0x0000000)
Is the new ram incompatible?? this makes no sense though.....   ???

I have tried switching ram sticks around but no luck there
Got three BSOD's yesterday, no specific error just STOP: blah blah blah when trying to burn a CD and then after that just when using IE.....
........and then I played call of duty 2 for 3hours without a single problem
Today when trying to run FS2 open I got two IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL errors (with no driver mentioned)
Anyway, I have been doing some research on socket 754 athlon 64's, and I found some interesting info from AMD:
Where MSI says that the board supports that config at DDR400. so the board supports it but the CPU doesn't! what is the point of that??
I tried running at DDR333 but the CPU stuck at 1.8GHZ (150FSBx12) according to everest
Is it possible at all to run two sticks of Double sided ram at DDR400? surely someone has done it and has it working....
Another thing, after the first IRQL error my computer hung at detecting the CD-RW drive and I had to turn off and on again  ???

  • Msi Diamond and four memorycomps - problems?

I have installed four 512Mb ddr566@500 comp's and now when I have used the machine a while, winxp will pop up a blue screen. The machine will restart then (so quickly, that I can't read the errormessage).
    Before I had two 512Mb ddr566@500 comp's, without problems.
Is this board unable to handle four memorycomps, or what might be the problem? I have already ran memorytest succesful. In the manual reads, that when using four comp's, the maxium speed is ddr333? The cpu is Opteron148, with venus core.
Edit. BTW can someone say, is my PSU strong enough to run whole machine. It is Tagan 2force 480W and machine: Msi diamond, 148Op, 2Gb ram, 2x 6800 ultra, 2x hdd, audigy4 pro, 3x 120mm casefan. When I plug two more hdd's, nvidia system will show error, that power is not enough to graphic cards. The manual says, that the mainboard want 450W or more psu.

MSI always have the color code for vdimm.
It's what the vendor of the modules state for nominal voltage that counts .
If they say 2.8 i would run 2.8 or higher (not below) . 0.05 higher to compensate for voltage drops during load.
Double 6800 Ultras (stock clocked) pci-e draws something around 70w from the +12v line each in full 3D mode/load. (in idle 2D mode about 30w each)
Thats almost 6A per card , times two it's 12A just for your graphics in the highest load situation .
I'm not sure though if SLI balances toe load exactly equal , but lets assume so to be sure .
Then atleast 8-10A from +12 goes to your cpu depending on model and if overvolted/overclocked .
And consider apx. 1A +12v usage for each HDD and optical (although the use a bit more at spinup , but then the gfx's are in 2D mode) .
    1A +12v for mobo .
    Fans run off +12v .
Memory runs off +3.3v or +5.0v depending on motherboard design .
Add things up and have a rule of using a load target for the PSU @ 80% (fully loaded PSU's loose efficiancy and stability .
There is some guideline of SLI building and dimensioning of PSU you might wanna check out over at nvidia .

  • MSI NEO2 and Asus v9999GT problems

    Hi,
well my problem is when the Asus v9999GT is installed i boot windows up but it just keeps restarting or blue screening(i see the desktop then it restarts*if i dont get a blue screen that is) It usely takes 4-5 restarts before windows finally starts. Ive reinstalled the comp 4 times trying to fix the problem but had no luck finally i reinstalled the comp with my 9000 Pro II and no more restarting no more blue screening windows starts normally. But thats not a fix i bought the new card and im not going to let $530 go down the drain. It seems to me its the NEO 2 that does not like the Asus, i try the asus in my old comp and everything works fine.
Is there a fix coming up, i know others who have the same problem
btw its not the ram i did a memtest and no errors
    AMD 3500+
    MSI Neo 2
    1Gb Geil RAM CAS2.53-3-7
    Asus v9999
    Windows SP2

I don't think it's PSU related caused by the gfx card if
it is the asus 9999GT/TD . As this is a 6800 board with GT core clock
    and 128M DDR1 memory.
And in 2D windows it should use estimatly 20W .
    :Xbitlabs
The NVIDIA GeForce 6800 eats less energy than the GeForce GT as it has lower frequencies and the GPU voltage . As a result, without overclocking, the card consumes 16.96W(10w on +12v) in the Idle mode(2D) and 38.88W in the Burn mode(3D).
    Real GT:
23w in idle mode and 53w in burn mode(3D) .
So it consumes something between those two i guess.
If you suffer from restarts in only in windows (2D) your gfx card don't use
any more power than your R9000 in 3D does (which worked running games i guess).
But if you didn't run/test the 9000 in any burn mode or 3dmark , it might
    be PSU tipping over afterall.
Could be some drivers/sw causing it.
Try to edit your boot.ini file and turn off DEP
Edit noexecute switch it to be like this:
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=alwaysoff /fastdetect

    About the exclamation marks:
Goto Device Manager -> View -> Show hidden devices (enable)
Goto the multimedia-section (where the exclamation marks are) and uninstall all devices marked with an exclamation mark LEAVE THE OTHERS!
==> Note: if you see two of the same installed devices of which one is installed wrongly (excl. mark) and the other is grayed out, uninstall them both. Note to leave all other things, like codecs, alone. If you don't, you ruin your Windows <==
Now, reboot Windows and when the hardware install wizard pops up, cancel that and install the audio drivers manually.
Then the JAUD-pin header: open your case. The JAUD pins are at the bottom left of your board. JAUD1 should be printed next to it. It looks like this:

    o o o o o
The x is the place where a pin is missing. now, both pins next to that one should be connected with a jumper
    o o | o |
    o o | o |
The two | show the pins to be connected.

    DDR-RAM 512MB PC400 CL3 Kingston KVR400X64C3A/512
    DDR-RAM 512MB PC400 CL3 Samsung
but the motherboard recognizes only 256 MB for both. The RAM are good: I tried them in an other pc!
Now I have installed an A-DATA ram 256 MB and the motherboard recognizes 256 MB!
Do you think that my motherboard is defective?
    Thank you in advance.
P.S. I'm sorry for my bad english.

No the memory controller is onboard the CPU so in any case the MB is not defective. However the CPU revision may hold you back on some RAM especially if you mix make and model RAM on the same channel. A socket 754 CPU only has one channel so all RAM must be matched to work properly.
If those Sticks can only be seen as a wrong value when used by themselves it is likely that either they have errors or the timings in Bios are improperly set to azllow them to work. In this case you can normally find out what is going on by running memtest86. If you get errors on test 5 or 7 then you have timgs timed improperly and any other errors would show bad RAM.
Another case is not having enough power for everything to work properly together. Usually this happens when you don't have enough 12v amps for these newer rigs.
Post complete specs and test results and maybe we can help you further.
