Hello,
Just bought this board today and installed. System won't post. CPU, video card and PS fans start, CD-ROM spins but that's it! No indication on display that anything's happening. No beep codes.

Ok, I have the Athlon 64 FX-51 with the MSI K8T Master2-FAR.  I have one gigabyte of REGISTERED Memory (Corsair), 500W Power Supply, 120GB Seagate SATA HDD, DVD, DVD-RW, FDD, & 250MB Zip Drive.  Everything is (as far as I know) installed properly, but when I try to power it up, it doesn't start up.  Nothing will come on the screen, but the fans spin properly, and the motherboard speaker beeps at me (telling me something is wrong).  ANY advice will be graciously accepted.

Wow, that sounds like a killer system.  I have not had a lot of experience with this motherboard, so my ideas here are going to be pretty general.  The speaker beep is a POST message: the number and length of beeps should correspond to the failed check when starting your computer.  You'll want to check in the mobo manual for a chart of post beeps and the associated failures.
Otherwise, you can check your video card to see if it is working.  Make sure it is firmly seated in the AGP slot, and make sure you have supplied the additional power connector (needed for most high end graphics cards).  Also, try removing one DIMM (stick of memory) and see if it boots that way and try moving around the remaining DIMM if it still wont boot.
Similar problems often occur when your system does not recognize or support the RAM at SPD settings (or whatever you set them to last).  Clear the CMOS and restart if you have changed the settings yourself (this will put them back to the defaults).  If you have not changed the memory timings, you could try booting up with other memory modules, and then swapping them out after you have gotten the system to boot (this might be difficult since you need to find registered modules).
More information would be helpful... post the current over your PSU drive rails.  Just saying that it is 500W is not enough.
As long as your CPU fans are moving, you shouldn't be damaging anything by trying different things.  However, when you stop and restart your system, always wait for a little while for the power in your PSU to dissipate (you should hear a "PZZT" sound).  Otherwise, if you keep starting and restarting your computer, you may blow something up.
    Good luck!

  • Problem with NVidia Quadro FX 4000 on MSI K8T Master2-Far

Hello everyone, I am new to the forums here.  I cannot figure out what is causing my problem.
I have been having performance issues with my new Quadro FX 4000 on my system.  I have been in communication with Nvidia tech support for a while now.  Here is the discussion I have been having with them.  It explains my problem in detail.  Be sure to read it from bottom to top though.
    *Update*
I have a feeling that my PSU might be causing the low performance, seeing that the Quadro requires two power connectors to attach to it: (http://www.pny.com/support/quadro/install/FX4000AdditionalPowerRequirements.pdf)
    Here is my PSU:
    http://www.xpcgear.com/500wseepsubl.html
I do not know much about PSU's, so any input is greatly appreciated.  Thanks.
    Response (GL)
    Pat,
I have checked the NVBug Database and although there has been Bugs submitted where a MSI Master2-Far motherboard was used, none of the issues were caused by the motherboard. They just happened to have a MSI Master2-Far motherboard.
We have seen conflicts when both ATI and NVIDIA drivers are both installed, but I would hope that the Driver Cleaner software removed the lines in the registry as well.
Did you try the FX4000 in the other system (the one that had the MX 440) ?
I believe you are taking to right steps in resolving this issue.
Looking at the Windows Error Reporting, it seems you have had some app problems.
Looking forward in hearing your results

OK I completed my tests and got some interesting results.
-I installed the GeForce Mx 440 on my computer and it yielded similar poor performance just like the Quadro did (terrible window scrolling, stuttering, horrible gaming).
-I then installed the Quadro on the computer I yanked the Geforce MX 440 from.  I installed the most recent drivers, and it worked WONDERFULLY.  There was no stuttering, no lagging, and Open GL gaming seemed even better than the MX 440 (I know the Quadro is not designed for gaming, but some Open GL counter-strike served as a nice little test.)  Unfortunately, that computer does not have Adobe Premiere or any high-end applications for me to really test the card with.
-After those two tests, I uninstalled the MX 440 from my computer and re-installed its ORIGINAL ATI 9600 SE.  It worked just like it did before I first received the Quadro.  No window lagging, no stuttering, and adequate gaming.
All of these test yield a few conclusions to me:
    1. The Quadro FX 4000 card is not defective, it does indeed work.
    2. My computer seems to dislike Nvidia cards and/or drivers (seeing as the Quadro and GeForce gave me terrible results while the ATI worked fine.)
It would seem to be a driver issue, almost like my original ATI driver files are still running.  That would explain everything.  However, I completely removed the ATI driver AND ran Driver Cleaner to clear all ATI files from my system before attempting to install the Nvidia card.
I cannot think of a reason for these inconsistencies. Tomorrow I plan on preparing to completely crash my computer. Backup my files and completely format my HD's and reinstalled Windows XP Pro, my Mobo software, all drivers, ect.
I will await any ideas or suggestions before I format my computer.  I hope these tests along with my system info helps.  Thank you very much.

    Ok,
Here is my system info.  I realize that the Quadro FX 4000 has a conflicting IRQ with my onboard gigabyte ethernet, but my old ATI card was the same way, and it never caused a problem.  Also, I am unsure how to fix that anyways.  Hopefully this info helps us determine the problem.
I am going to try a few tests of my own.  I am going to install a GeForce MX 440 AGP card(from my other computer) and see how it performs.  Then I will try re-installing my old ATI 9600SE card.  If I get similar low performance, than it must be something else besides the card.  Otherwise, the card is the issue.
    Thanks for the help.

    Pat,
Maybe the system info will shed some light.
    Please perform the following steps:
    1) Click on the Start button
    2) Select Run
    3) In the Open field, type in "msinfo32" and then press the OK button
    4) This will bring up the Microsoft System Information Utility.
Click on File and then Save to save this information to your hard drive. You may give it any name you choose.
    5) Once the file has been saved on your hard drive, attach it to this support request so that we may review your system configuration.
    Looking forward for your response.

I completely uninstalled my old ATI and Nvidia drivers.  I went into safe mode and ran Driver Cleaner also.  I freshly installed the new Nvidia driver and I still have low performance.
I am trying to download Viewperf, but it is downloading at about 30k/s, which will take about a day to finish.  What else could be causing this?  It is possible its a bad card? I got it new on Ebay from a legitimate seller, but it came with the card only.
     Response (GL) 02/01/2007 06:00 PM
Thank you for contacting NVIDIA Customer Care
There should not be any performance drop browsing the internet or moving windows across screens.
Since you did have an ATI card installed, you may want to verify that all files have been removed.
This also includes the registry since there are applications known to leave files behind.
Once all ATI files have been removed, please run a benchmark software such as ViewPerf.
Viewperf 9.03 can be found on the following location:

I recently upgraded to a Quadro FX 4000.  I do a lot of video editing on Premiere, and from what I read, it seemed like the best card to get.  However, I am getting very poor performance with this card.  For example, just browing the internet and moving windows around yields a very stuttery picture.  And I do not notice any different using Premiere.
I uninstalled my old video card (ATI 9600 SE) and uninstalled the drivers for it as well.
I have tried 3 different versions of drivers for the Quadro 4000, including the most recent.
I have checked the power connections, and the card is receiving power on both the ports.
I really have no idea what could be causing this bad performance.  Is this how the card works?  Did my ATI 9600SE yield better performance for internet browsing than this card does?  The only thing I can think of is that the card is not getting enough power because it connects to 2 seperate power cables from the PSU which already power lots of other things (HD's, Disk Drives, Fans).
Any help is greatly appreciated.  Here at my system specs:
    Custom built PC
    MSI Master2-Far Mobo
    2x AMD Opteron 244
    2G Transcend DDR 333 Registered Ram(1 stick)
    2x WD 74G Raptors (RAID 0)

your PSU is good one and should be powerfull enough.
    Output    +3.3V@28A, +5V@30A, +12V@34A, [email protected], [email protected], +5VSB@2A
can't be power related, since at 1st your PSU must be enough, 2nd same issue happend with your old mx 440 VGA. card malfunction are dismissed as possibility as well since its work fine in another machine.
think its drivers mess. ATI drivers(or part of them) still exist, guess is not completely removed. same symptoms happend many times when switching between Ati to NV, lagging 2D scrolling lag and etc, caused by ATI Smart (part of ATI Drivers) sometimes remain(survive after driver cleaner).
suggest you a new clean fresh OS installation. like Nv support already directed. also ensure in BIOS, in "Integrated Peripherals", "Init Display First" are configured to AGP.
let we know how its going, if problem persist we a ready with a tips to resolve your issue.

  • K8T Master2-Far Will not POST unless CMOS is freshly cleared!

Hey all, thanks for helping out.
I came back to my computer one day to find it in a coma. The system was on, but the screen was getting no signal and would not come on by moving the mouse/keyboard like usual. I thought that maybe it had turned off the monitor for power save and then frooze some how. After restarting the computer I found that it was still doing the same thing. I shut down the system and unpluged. After waiting about 5 min i plugged back in and flipped the switch on the powersupply. This started the computer right up (even though i had not pushed th power button) and left it in the same condition as before. It simply would not post. After closer inspection I found that it was not posting because it wasn't getting far enough in the process before it was being restarted. I checked the restart button and even went as far as removing it from the motherboard. This did not help. I knew it was restarting because i could see it checking the optical drives then waiting for about 4 seconds, then a weird noise from the speakers (like a soft cruching so to speak) would happen, then it would do this all over again, non stop. That noise was familliar though, it was the normal noise that I hear when I push the restart button (I'm guessing a release of electricity etc..) so I knew what was going on.
After switching the memory out and in all orders, I stripped the system down to the bare min. This however did not change anything. I put the system back together and flashed the cmos. This made the system restart once, then "BEEP" it posted. It said CMOS Checksome Error - Defaults Loaded. I first pushed DEL to get into the bios. I changed everything back to how its suppost to be (time, apature, etc...) then saved and exited. This made the system go back into its restarting state. I then flashed the cmos again and pushed F1 to continue. The system booted up just fine. In safemode of course. Then i restarted. It then went back into its restarting state. I flashed the bios again. And after pushing F1 to continue selected it to go into windows normally. Everytime it does this it gets different results. One time it got past the windows xp loading screen and sat at the black screen before you get your curser and welcome screen (sigh... restart... flash..). It also once got in just fine, and after about 5 min got a blue screen about "bad pool caller". It most the time however gets a random blue screen right after you see the welcome screen. These blue screens consist of "bad pool caller", "IRQ Equal or Lesser Value", or No notes, just generic blue screen.
If i change anything in my bios it will not post. If i dont flash the cmos, it will not post. If i dont change anything in bios and continue, then restart, it will not post. The only way for it to post and for me to see anything on the screen is to flash the cmos. I thought it might be the power supply, but the only extra i have does not have the extra plug to power the 2nd cpu. After thinking about it though. I dont know if it could be a power supply issue, if it was then would it even load up into safe mode? Or why would it not load up into safe mode again after restarting. I have tried an extra stick of memory that i know works in a separate computer, but nothing changed. I have tried a different videocard... nothing changed. I have removed everthing accept the basics (motherboard, cpu's,videocard, memory, psu) and nothing changed.
I have worked on this for about 1 week now and can not figure it out. I have my useless MCSE/CSE/A+ certifications (I say useless because I dont have a job that uses them) but this one is beyond me. If anyone could help I would appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Brandon
P.S. I dont know if this is related, but I did have to change from useing the DVI connection to RGB plug to even see anything once I heard it post. I was useing DVI before, and once i figured out that it would post after flashing cmos, I had to change to RGB to get any visual. The DVI will not work now at all. I have even tried changing cords. The DVI wont work in safemode either. Thanks

I reckon these mobos have a fault that really needs to be sorted.  You say that your PC was working fine using PC 3200 memory with 240's. I have a similliar problem, I am using 246's with Kingston' PC3200 KVR333X72RC25/512D 2.5 ECC REG.  The PC worked fine for about two weeks and then one day went on a blink, every time I power it up all I get is beeps.  I was forced to order new BIOS, which didn't work everything else has been tested and works fine.
So I ordered micron memory 2X512 PC 2100 266 ECC REG which I was told by the supplier that it was compartible, that didn't work either.  I then went on to check the battery, to my surprise the battery was low so I thought I had nailed it, went out bought a new battery but the problem still exits.  I must say though after installing the micron memory it did boot up but when I went into BIOS to change settings to boot fro CDROM  the damn thing would not restart I had to switch it off using the power button to restart it and when it restarted all i got was beeps.  After that to  get it to bootup I have to reset CMOS using the jumper and when it boots up it gives a checksum error message.  I have a choice of two at this stage
    (1) To Press F1
    (2) To Press delete o go into BIOS setup
The F1 option takes me as far as the windows log on screen and that's it cuts off as if it is gonna boot itself backup but just hangs there.
The Delete option takes into BIOS which when exited the PC does nothing until powered down and powered up again, from here I have to reset CMOS to get it to bootup.
I have been told that the  kingston memory is not compatible but my question is how did it work the first two weeks?
Good ol' Bas have helped out on this one quite often but here I am three months on still in a struggle.  I thought of RMAing the board but it would cost me about 160 pounds and with that kind of money I could pick up another boad from kompllete.com and remain with some change for a couple of buds.
"To bass You said in the last post that the poblem could be the power supply changed it but that has not solved my problem"

Yes they do, for example the NIC drivers can be found here: http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/downloaddrivers.php
HEY!  I forgot Broadcom does release drivers for its wired controllers, but not its wireless product line.  I've never had a wired BCM controller, only wireless, so my searches for drivers there have only turned up 'we don't provide drivers, check with the OEM'.  Thanks.

OK...I put the system in my sig together and turned on the machine. Went straight into the bios to tweak stuff like I wanted to. 1st off, my cd burner and my hdd were not detected. I made a mental note of that and kept on browsing through. I was at the screen that gives the current temperature (which was hovering from 34C-35C) and then outta no where the thing dies. Now, the power led on the front of the case flashes long slow flashes. I turned the psu off, then turned it on and tried to boot. I can hear a faint whine as the hdd led comes on, then it goes silent and the green power led starts flashing again. I disconnected my two case fans and front case leds (not the power and hdd leds) and tried it again thinking it was the psu. Same thing as before.  I moved cmos jumper to clear for ten minutes and then moved it back. I tried to start it back up, the fan on the processor spun for about a second, heard the faint beep, then nothing w/ the power led doing the slow contunuous flashing thing. Anyone know what's going on?

I took the ram out, cleared CMOS for about 40 minutes, put CMOS jumper back, and then put the ram back.  I turned the comp on and actually got some signal to the monitor b/c it temporarily turned on for about 3 seconds(though no picture came up), then it turned off and the flashing power led began.  Sounds like the ram may indeed be the prime suspect.  BTW, do any of you have a stick of ram I could borrow (lol)?  I called two computer stores and asked if they could put a stick of ram they had laying around and see if it posted.  One of them asked if I was going to buy their ram if it worked and I said no, b/c I would just RMA the ram I already bought.   They said it would cost about $15.  I called one more store and they said it would $45!  WTC, I can buy my own stick at newegg for $24!

Any final thoughts b4 I package this stuff up?  I'm now contemplating sending the processor, ram, and mobo back.

  • I want to buy 2 MSI-478 Retention Modules for the K8T Master2-FAR

Where to buy P4-478 Retention Modules for the K8T Master2-FAR? I would like to have a Choice in heatsinks, I know that 478 clipon heatsinks may work, But Where do I buy the Retention Modules for this motherboard, Since real 478 Retention Modules are worthless when It concerns this K8T Master2-FAR motherboard(I bought one and It's in a really cheap and flimsy case), I ask as 603 heatsinks are mainly for servers and aren't too useful to Me, A new one that I've seen looks great, But It's passive, has 4 heatpipes, Is about 80x80mm in width and has no place for fans(bummer). I'd love to use the SP-94, But again It won't work as It is a bolt on 478 and as such It won't work, I'd also like to use a pair of Thermalright XP90(XP92?) heatsinks, But those may not fit as They use 92mm fans, So far the only heatsink that would be workable is the SLK-947U as It has the 478 Clips, I have one on one of My 2 other PCs(Nforce2 chipsets), 80mm fans would still be the max, But at least the heatsink would not be too bad. I just need the 2 retention modules with the 603 hole spacing that MSI made, On the other hand being the screws use a 3mm thread, I should be able to find those elsewhere, Somewhere. I just need one pair I might add. This is cause others have reported that Xeon water blocks do not fit(This was over on forums.2cpu.com).

    Bump...
Actually since MSI had these Socket 478 Retention Modules custom made for this motherboard I may have to call MSI and ask, Since I was told a Xeon based Danger Den Maze4 Water block will not fit on this K8T Master2-FAR motherboard without the water block being modified slightly. And I suspect My motherboard was not New, It was I suspect in fact a Returned motherboard (a refunded purchase) and the reason I say this is cause the motherboard box (tab) was bent as It seems to have been inserted into the box a few times and the manual had one corner bent over slightly.

  • Hi everyone, few questions about the K8T Master2-FAR;

    Hi,
Ive just registered with this forum and have been reading all the messages and find everything very interesting. I know you probably have all heard the same questions before and I am really sorry for asking them again but I just need to clear some things up in my head. Before I ask the question I just need use all to know that Im far from a computer expert so pretty please dont go into to much technical detail. This is actually the 1st computer I built myself. (Everyone I come accross in the desing world is G5 Mac this and G5 Mac that, so thought I would build a system that matching the G5). If you think something is to hard to myself I wont be offended:) Im actually at uni studying Media Design so use my machine for Dreamweaver, photoshop, flash, afterfx and some movie editing etc and some programming......
(Hope i havent bored everyone already)
    My comp:-
    K8T Master2-FAR
    2x Opterons 242
    2g ram(pretty decent memory i think!)
    nVidia GFX5500 256mb
    Maxtor sata 120g Hard Drive
    My questions are:-
    1) When I had finished building the comp I remember CoreCentre showing a reading of 3600 (the multiplier was sitting on 20 i think!!!) yet I can get nowhere near that now. The highest I can get is 1760, 220x8 mhz. Has anyone else experienced this?
    2) If my processors are 1.6 ghz why is the lowest reading not 3600 mhz? This really confuses me and makes me believe that only 1 processor is doing its job. But I know that cant be it because at startup its states 2 cpu's and when I press ctr+alt+delete there are 2 cpu boxes. Is it a problem with corecentre?
    3) Can i, and if so, where and how can i increase the multiplier? When I was installing something big(think is was final cut studio) the multiplier went upto x9 but that was it.
    4) I think this is most important, I only have the BIOS version that came with instalation cd. I have ran LiveUpdate and doesnt show anything under the BIOS bitty. Where can I find out what bios version I have? Im quessing I have version 1.0 and from reading this forum for a week and working up enough courage to create my first post, I noticed people talking about version 1.4. the BIOS sound pretty important so can someone email me the newest version and a dummies guide to installing(if thats what its called lol) it. My home email is [email protected].
If anyone read this then thank you very much and if you reply I would be very gratefull.
    Thanks again
    liam

    Hi,
You need to remove CoreCenter and install CoreCenterPro, those are different versions.
As for the multiplier, that can't be upped with Opterons and the current BIOS'ses won't even allow you to change it at all.
Maybe the upcomming 1.4 BIOS will change that, but I'm not sure as I didn't see the feature in BIOS 1.4B7.
Anyway, stay away from the 1.4x BIOS'ses at the moment, as most will render the board dead.
At the moment overclocking the Opterons on this board isn't possible.
I can't even do much with my FX-51 as the BIOS doesn't have those features.
It might change when MSI release the final 1.4 BIOS, but the latest beta still has many buggs.

  • Questions on a newly purchased K8T Master2 Far m/b

    Hi,
I just purchased a K8T Master2 Far m/b at a local computer store for $89.99. They had two of them sitting on their markdown table. They where in turned inside out Asus K8N-DL m/b boxes. In other words, the box labels where on the inside. They could of been replaced w/the Asus's, though they appear to be brand new.
The K8T Master2 Far has the two HSF's, the HSF back plates, the external USB/Sound slot adapter, and the rear I/O back plate. It has no manual, CD, or cables. The manual and CD files can be downloaded, so that is no problem. I have plenty of cables lying around.
    Some questions:
    1. The manual says the m/b supports the Opteron 244 and up. Can I use a 240 or 242 on it? I also read to make sure to use Opterons which have the following last letters in their p/n's. ( AL, AU, AK, AT ) Any reason?
    2. The two HSF's that came w/it are different from each other, as well as is their mountings. One is a direct screw on while the other is a plastic clamping. The m/b has the plastic mating clamp for it mounted on only one socket. The other socket is just a direct screw on. They both have the back plates. I think I read somewhere that MSI is/was shipping the K8T Master2 Far w/these two different HSF's for some reason. I also read that you can use Intel Xeon HSF's on this m/b. Should I replace the HSF's that came w/it or are they OK? Will the HSF's that come w/the retail Opterons also work?
    3. The m/b is a rev. 1 model. What is the difference between the rev. 1 and rev. 2 m/b's?
    4. What's the fastest Opteron cpu that can be used on this m/b? I read the X2's can't be used.
    5. I noticed that MSI hasn't updated the BIOS in a long time. Any word on any future BIOS update or is the m/b totally dead in regards to any further support?
    6. Finally any problems running Windows XP x64 on this m/b?
I plan to add the K8T Master2 Far to my DC (distributed computing) network.
    Thx.

I use 2 Opterons 240 on it, no problem at all.
For the mounting of the coolers, read the manual.
BIOS 1.10 or 1.20 are the best versions to use.
MSI is working on a new BIOS as we speak, but it's not finished.
As for the revision, as far as I know it only comes in Ver1....
You are mixing the other board, that's the K8T-Master-2FAR7, but has a different MS-xxxx number and does support the Dual-core CPU's, but there are big problems with the board when using just 1 CPU, MSI is working on a better BIOS to fix 1 CPU support.
Win64 runs without problems at all.

  • Need RAID driver for k8t master2-far package didnt come with disk driver

I bought the K8T Master2-FAR and the VIA VT6420/VT8237 Disk Driver was not included. I'm trying to install WinXP64 but I need the raid driver before I can. I went to the download section of msi and select my board but the drivers are all 32bit when i tried to use them. There are several 64-bit drivers on the msi cd under Adaptec and LSI but not sure which one of these would work for me. Can someone show me where I can get the correct 64-bit raid driver for my board?
    Thanks for your time.

  • Is WOL supported -- K8T Master2 FAR

Is WOL supported by K8T Master2 FAR?  I let the PC go standby and attempted to access to this PC from other PC in the network but it appeared stayed in standby mode.  I have never used WOL so maybe I am not doing it right. Could anyone help me?

I got this info from MSI, maybe it's the thing you need to get it working.

I have one question for you. The motherboard has three power connectors. A 24 pin , a 8 pin and a 4 pin. Looking at your specs i see that you have the OCZ Powersteam 520W Power Supply Unit. I looked at a review of this PSU and it has the following connectors for this: 20+4 connector and a 4+4 connector. So the 24 pin and the 8 pin connectors are covered. All the pci-e connectors i see are 6 pins, also for this PSU. What did you do with the 4 pin connector close to the pci-e slot?
